This two- year project is like a dream, and the World Solar Challenge is a dream coming true.”

ROAD TO WSC: RACE PREPARATIONS
INITIAL TESTING & DEBUGGINGMurphy’s law states that anything which can go wrong, will. It was with this in mind that the team began testing B-7 as soon as unveiling ended. The first few weeks were spent doing a “shakedown” where the car was tested for general functionality such as driving and braking using only the battery pack. The solar array was integrated near the end of this process. After some minor bugs with panel connections, the car was ready for stress testing and detailed debugging.
TRACK TESTINGWhen it seemed like B-7 was finally approaching tip-top shape, the team decided to bring her to Grand Bend Motorplex for driver training and characterization. B-7 was not designed to set record track times, but she handled the corners well and the team collected many lines of driving data. This information would prove to be very valuable in Australia, where it guided the team as it performed road testing before the race. The final characterization test was done at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s wind tunnel right before B-7 was shipped.
STRESS TESTINGThe team soon began testing at Bombardier’s airfield to give B-7 more driving space. After numerous figure eights and hard brakes, both of B-7’s front suspensions ripped out of the chassis. This and an issue with unexpected wear of bearings kept the mechanical team very busy. Meanwhile, the electrical team was focused on fixing issues with the battery monitoring system. Sleep was scarce during this time, but as long as the problems were not occurring during the race, the team was glad to deal with them.

ROAD TO WSC: RACE PREPARATIONSRACE ROUTE SURVEYSome members of the team arrived in Adelaide, Australia before B-7 finished her journey across the ocean to ensure that she would receive a warm welcome on the other side of the world. Then, two of the team’s five-car race caravan were driven North along the Stuart Highway, tracking the race route in reverse. Many notes about camping locations, road conditions, construction zones, and other interesting anomalies were taken along the way.
TESTING IN DARWIN, AUSTRALIAAlthough B-7’s had a smooth arrival, things quickly became hectic with an unexpected rod-end sizing issue. The team searched frantically for bigger rod-ends and machinists to update the suspension parts. After two days of calling, discussing and kind help from local machine shops, the problem was resolved. B-7 was then inspected by local transportation authority and granted permission tobegin road testing. B-7 was driven for about 3 hours a day over the course of a week in Darwin to train drivers and collect characterization data.

WSC BEGINS: SCRUTINEERING
OCT 3: STATIC SCRUTINEERINGThe first day of official race events began with team registration at static scrutineering. All team members were registered with race officials and race drivers were weighed.
On this day, B-7 was inspected by race officials to ensure safety and road worthiness. Official event stickers were added to B-7’s body and officials began a multitude of tests to ensure that B-7 was built to regulation. Test items included mechanical, electrical, vision check, driver ingress/egress, battery systems and solar array specifications. B-7 passed every test except for one minor issue with the driver’s headrest and another with canopy opening instruction labels. An official pass was given the next day, after the team made some quick fixes.
OCT 5: DYNAMIC SCRUTINEERINGDynamic scrutineering took place at Hidden Valley Race Track and consisted of evaluations of each car’s turning and braking performance as well as qualifiers to determine the race starting positions. The team arrived early at the track to get ready. Once mechanical and electrical checks were done, the team’s well rested qualifying driver, Jane, got into B-7 and waited for her turn to burn some rubber (she had, of course, been practicing).
Solar cars were evaluated and sped past the pits as the team watched (and timed) their performances. Finally, B-7 was up. B-7 easily passed the evaluations and proceeded to run a very smooth starting lap. As Jane, the driver, drew close to the lap marker to begin the second, timed, lap, cheers erupted from the team’s section of the pits. Two hours of driving around the track gave Jane enough experience and intuition to post a time of two minutes and twenty seconds, which gave us a very fitting seventh place starting position. The team cheered again as the dynamic duo pulled into the garage, and began to pack everything up in preparation for the race the next day.

“My favourite part of WSC2013 was the time we spent at Hidden Valley Race Track, the place reserved for teams for working and testing prior to the race. We stayed at the track for about a week and made some minor tweaks in hopes of improving the performance of B- 7.
In the end, I learned through the interactions with other teams that there is something bigger in this competition than building and racing a solar car. I discovered that the competition is about challenging people from all backgrounds to get together, solve real problems, and find ways to change the world.
While the cars degrade over time, the growth of the team members will last for generations to come and contribute to great change in the global community, and that is what made the work and the race all the more worthwhile for me.”

2013 WORLD SOLAR CHALLENGERACE HIGHLIGHTS
DAY 1: ROUGH BEGINNINGSTo get ready for the start line of the upcoming big race, the team got up around 4am in the morning and left the comfort of Marrara Christian College. B-7 was brought to Darwin’s city center for display to the general public. The race began at 8am.
Almost as soon as B-7 left the start line in Darwin, a small but alarming problem arose: the solar array was not providing power. A decision was made to pull over and inspect the vehicle. Fortunately, it was a false alarm, but many teams had already passed B-7 by then and the seventh place starting position was lost. Disheartened, the team carried on, barely made the closing time of the first control stop, and finished the day in 26th place.

“It was a busy and hectic morning, we’ve just had to pull over to the side of the road to check on an array problem. Everyone was tired and not in a good mood, considering we were one of the last cars on the road.
Over the course of the next few hours, we slowly brought B-7 faster and faster until we were cruising at 90 kph. The sky was brilliantly blue, and all you could see was the red Australian soil. That was when I realized that the past two years, with its countless all- nighters was totally worth it. And I knew, in two years’ time, I’ll be back to do it all again.”

WORLD SOLAR CHALLENGE HIGHLIGHTSDAY 2: CATCHING UPThe sky was clear and a blistering sun powered B-7 as she overtook 15 solar cars on Race Day 2. The team checked in at Dunmarra control stop around 10am and continued on. After an emergency lunch drop-off for the chase vehicle’s hungry crew (poor chase, it had mistakenly not been packed), B-7 checked in at the next control stop, Tennant Creek. The day ended not far from the control stop with the team in 11th place.
DAY 3: SMOOTH SAILINGThe sun was shining bright again on the next day. B-7 made Ti Tree control stop in the morning and checked into Alice Springs control stop, the mid-point of the race, around 3pm without experiencing any technical issues. The logistics team took the time in Alice Springs to re-supply on food, drinks and other essentials for surviving the Outback. B-7 finished the day in 9th place, 100km south of Alice Springs control stop.
DAY 4: WINDY CONDITIONSRace Day 4 started off with a steering wheel issue, costing B-7 20mins of race time. But the mistake was quickly forgotten when a strong tailwind was pushing B-7 forward. B-7 sailed through Kulgera control stop around noon and while on the way to Cooper Pedy, she hit a record speed of 96kph. B-7 arrived at Cooper Pedy near 4pm and passed UMichigan team’s Generation, finishing in 8th place.
“The most important thing I realized during the race was the impact of energy consumption. We completed the 3,000-kilometre race on an average solar input of 1kW, which is the amount of energy consumed by a household toaster, and still managed to hit our targeted cruising speed of 75km/h. It’s one thing to design for sustainability, but it’s a different dimension all together experiencing it in person. “

DAY 5: CLOUDS CLOUDS AND MORE CLOUDSPerhaps it was only fair that after four days of perfect weather conditions, the sky on Day 5 was filled with thick, dark clouds. The silent and anxious team watched in disappointment as B-7 drove for the whole day at an average speed of 40kph. B-7 did not pass any control stops, and as the day went on, all the team hoped for was that the next day would bring better weather and allow B-7 to make it to Adelaide. The day finished with B-7 in 9th place, only kilometers behind UMichigan. A disappointing day had come to a disappointing end, but as the team was setting up camp, the clouds began to disperse and golden streaks began to appear in the evening sky. Was this a sign of the day to come?
“Twice during the race, I bawled my eyes out. First was on the second last day when we were betrayed by the Australian weather. As the route navigator, I was devastated by the fact that we may not finish the race at the speed we were going at. All of our team’s effort, our sponsors’ support, our friends’ and families’ understanding would have gone to waste.
But this horrible, horrible feeling disappeared when I bawled my eyes out for the second time, when I found myself standing with B- 7 past that spray painted, hot pink line labeled “finish” on the asphalt at end of timing. And then, I secretly laughed at myself for not believing in B- 7’s potential.”

DAY 6: FINISH!The clear sky was a glorious sight for the team to wake up to as preparations were made to charge for one last morning. With the bright sun peeking over the horizon, the team was fully confident that B-7 would have enough energy to drive the remaining 500km. Check in at Port Augusta happened near noon just after B-7 passed UMichigan once again (this time for good!). The team encountered some traffic during the last stretch into the City of Adelaide so extra caution was taken by the crew. With the sun shining and some energy left in the battery pack, B-7 and the team went full speed at 95kph and crossed the finishline at 1:38pm, marking the completion of the journey across the continent of Australia.

CURRICULUM INVOLVEMENT
UOFT OUTREACH
Fall 2012, the team introduced a new initiative: Solar Car 101. These seminar sessions allowed new members and interested students to learn more about our multidisciplinary project on an interactive and informative platform. Through one-hour sessions each week, we covered topics from race strategy and aerodynamics to design and sponsorship. Every week’s session were welcomed by more than 40 students.
As the largest student design project on campus, Blue Sky continue to collaborate with various University projects to give undergraduatestudents a unique learning experience. Projects are submitted to MIE capstone and Engineering Strategies and Practices courses for students to work on.
Blue Sky prides itself on being theambassadors of UofT by participatingin UofT outreach events. Year afteryear, Blue Sky’s cars are showcased at UofT open house events. The team also hosts workshop tours and collaborateswith the UofTs DEEP and other outreach programs to educate younger students about solar technology.
