EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

BackgroundChronic pancreatitis (CP) is characterized by irreversible damage to the pancreas, developmentof histological evidence of inflammation and fibrosis, which eventually leads to destruction of

the exocrine (acinar cell) and the endocrine (islets of Langerhans) tissue.

Because many patients report of unexplained abdominal pain, the symptom eludes timelydiagnosis of Chronic Pancreatitis. Hence, the prevalence of the disease remains unknown. It isinteresting to note that India is home to a large population of patients suffering with ChronicPancreatitis, especially the population from the southern part of the country. However, inwestern countries, in a population of 100, 000, generally, 8 to 10 cases are reported per year,which if compared to Indian population (114-200 cases per year) is a miniscule number.

Of the many causes of Chronic Pancreatitis, alcohol consumption is majorly linked with thisdisease, except for Tropical Calcific Pancreatitis (TCP), a juvenile form of chronic calcific non-alcoholic pancreatitis and is exclusively reported in the developing countries of the tropicalworld. Tropical Calcific Pancreatitis is more prevalent and constitutes more than two-thirds ofcauses of Chronic Pancreatitis in India. And the mean age of onset of the disease is observed as24 years -affecting more male than female population.

The pathophysiology of tropical pancreatitis is unknown. Protein-calorie malnutrition, deficiencyof trace elements and micronutrients, and dietary factors including cassava (tapioca) predisposeto the disease. On the other hand, Chronic Pancreatitis is quite fatal in nature. Overall, 10-yearsurvival is about 70%, and 20-year survival is about 45%. Besides posing threat of pancreaticcancer in 40 per cent of patients diagnosed with Chronic Pancreatitis, it may also cause other

complications such as pseudocyst, common bile duct obstruction, fistulas and diabetes.

Genesis of the herbo mineral formulation (HMF)Nearly four decades before Meerut based Vaidya Chandra Prakash formulated a complex compoundusing copper, mercury and sulphur following the guidelines laid down in Rasa Shastra. Coincidently,this formulation was administered to a terminally ill young patient of pancreatic cancer whomiraculously recovered and enjoyed 38 years of disease free survival. Though this formulationworked for a few patients suffering with pancreatic cancer; it was found effective in treating patientsof Chronic Pancreatitis. Eventually patient inflow increased from a few to many from 1997. To retracethe success of this treatment protocol, a detailed analysis of the patient data was done in 2014. It wasfound that out of 56 patients 32 treated using this herbo-mineral formulation completed over a year

treatment and are leading a symptom free life.Step forwardBased on the empirical success of herbo-mineral formulation in the treatment of ChronicPancreatitis, the treatment protocol was discussed with scientists and policy makers in presenceof beneficiaries patients in an event organized in November 2014 at Dehradun. Following therecommendations made by experts, Honble Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Shri Harish Rawatagreed to extend logistic and financial support towards the scientific development of thisformulation under the aegis of Uttrakhand State Council of Science & Technology (UCOST).In lieu with the announcement, a project called Development of Herbo Mineral Formulation

(HMF) for Chronic Pancreatitis was launched in January 2014. The proceedings of this event

received wide media attention and soon after the event, distressed patients and their familiesapproached our Centre in Dehradun. In this report, we present first hundred cases those whoregistered for Ayurvedic treatment. Our 100th case, enrolled in March 2015, is 10 years old; his

name is Karthik, a resident of Australia.

Data Collection and Case StudiesAll these patients who approached us were diagnosed of CP by doctors of repute employedwith world-class hospitals across the country. Modern diagnostic tools and parameters suchas USG, ERCP, MRCP, EU and other were deployed to make accurate diagnosis. During the timeof medical review by our team, it was found that most of these patients had either receivedconventional treatment for a year or more and were in a fragile physical and mental state.

In this report, we present the data collected from 1997 till May 2015. 58 patients enrolled during 1997 to 2014 42 patients enrolled during December 2014 to May 2015

A giant leap: on the way to scientific developmentEven though CP can be managed using conventional medical aid, it however, remains a hugechallenge for the medical fraternity to treat it completely. Till date no known cure of CP has beenreported. In such a scenario, the herbo-mineral formulation developed by VCP Cancer ResearchFoundation (VCPCRF) in the treatment of CP has been found sustainable with no side-effects.

It will take approximately 7 years to near a logistic conclusion from the state sponsored projectDevelopment of HMF in the treatment of CP, a project based on the principles of reversepharmacology. Meanwhile, protocol based Ayurvedic treatment is being made available to

patients under close observation and long term follow-up as per the guidelines of good clinicalpractices.

A preliminary analysis is being carried out at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore andIIT Roorkee to test if the end product turns into a compound of oxidized minerals and has notrace of free metal. During the first three years, the multi-step drug processing will documentedusing scientific tools like particle size analyzer to standardize the process from grinding toprogrammed muffle furnacesto provide control heating and non-destructive analysis aftereach stepto understand the sequence of changes as well as to set up benchmark standards.These are all essential steps for reproducibility and future industrial production.

In the second stage, safety studies (acute, sub-acute and chronic) will be carried out on ratsand mice. In earlier studies, no Grade II toxicity (unpublished data) was reported. Herewith, asystematic safety study will be carried in collaboration with competent institutes. Finally, multi-centric randomized controlled clinical trial will be carried at the State and National level tomerge the benefits of traditional wisdom of Ayurveda into mainstream medicine. I am sure thatsuch efforts are very much needed to take this innovative treatment to the masses.

PREFACE

Chronic disease is a long-lasting condition that can be controlled but not

cured. Persistence of these diseases brings enormous financial and

emotional stress to an individual and the whole family. Chronic

Pancreatitis (CP) is one such emerging disease which is diagnosed with

inflammation of the pancreas that does not heal or improve, worsen over

time and leads to permanent damage. CP eventually, impairs ability todigest food and to make pancreatic hormones, and sometimes result in diabetes or pancreatic

cancer. Incidence of CP in India has reached to an alarming situation where almost 114/100000

people in Southern part has been reported as compared to 3.5-10/100000 of developed countries.

CP often develops in the most productive age group of 30-40 years, and is more common in men

than women (4:1).

The most miserable is the fact that there is no known cause and cure for CP in modern medicine.

Patients are generally given pain killers, pancreatic enzymes or insulin for life long as preventive

measure of severity of disease. However, a herbo-mineral formulation (HMF) prepared with Cu, Hg

and S and some herbs by Vaidya Balendu Prakash has shown remarkable success for complete and

sustainable treatment of CP. Vaidya Balendu claims that toxicological studies carried out on mice

have shown its non-toxic nature and processing of metals following the principles of Ras-shastra

indeed has a role to play in detoxifying the harmful effects of raw Cu, Hg and S. The intriguechemistry of HMF largely remains unknown so far. Recently, the Government of Uttarakhand has

taken note of this innovation and funded a seven year project, Development of Herbo-Mineral

Formulation for Chronic Pancreatitis to Vaidya Ji. This project is being done following the

approach of reverse pharmacology at VCP Cancer Research Foundation, Dehradun, under the

aegis of Uttarakhand State Council of Science & Technology (UCOST).

The evidence is required to prove an idea or concept or even a system. Council is of the opinion

that Ayurvedic drug discovery system need to integrate with modern scientific tools and

techniques for its evidence based global promotion. Robust documentation of clinical observations

for Ayurvedic formulations and publication of clinical data need to be encouraged in order to make

a strong foundation of Ayurvedic drug promotion. Curative effects of HMF in well diagnosed

approximately 110 patients of CP have been observed and documented by Vaidya Ji for decades in

his clinical practice. Council is extremely happy to learn that Vaidya Ji is publishing a booklet on his

efforts towards treatment of chronic pancreatitis using HMF.

CHRONIC PANCREATITIS

Chronic Pancreatitis (CP) is an inflammatory disease of the pancreas with irreversible

morphologic changes. It is characterized by moderate to severe pain in the upper abdomen

radiating to middle of the back associated with nausea, vomiting, weakness and weight loss.

Such symptoms might last from hours to two days and eventually could be continuous as the

condition get worse. Inflammation of the pancreas that does not heal, worsens over time and

leads to permanent damage. It occurs when digestive enzymes attack the pancreas and nearby

tissues, causing episodes of pain. It often develops in people who are between the age of 30

and 40. The symptoms may mimic Pancreatic Cancer as well.

CP is a global disease and studies depict that the incidences are increasing worldwide. CP occurs

more often in men than in women and the condition often develops in people of age 30-40.

However, there are cases where the onset of CP may occur even at a very young age.

The chronic form of pancreatitis can be triggered by one acute attack that damages the pancreatic

duct. The damaged duct causes the pancreas to become inflamed. Scar tissue develops and the

pancreas is slowly destroyed.

According to available literature, chronicpancreatitis was first described in Kerala, a

southern state in India and most of the cases

have been reported from the southern states

Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

However, our patient data reports incidences of

the diseases from many parts of the country.

UNSAID FACTS ABOUT CP

Before starting Ayurvedic treatment, case history was collected for all thepatients enrolled during 1997-2015. Some of our observations revealedinteresting facts that helped in better understanding of the disease. While afew clinical observations were similar to what we already know; a few added toour existing knowledge.

For example, it is well-known that it is the alcoholics who develop chronicpancreatitis. However, our clinical observations suggest that most of thepatients enrolled with us were vegetarians, non-alcoholic and non-tobaccousers.

Recently, Vitamin D3 deficiency in Indian population has been reported widely.In February 2015, we also screened patients for Vitamin D3 levels in theirblood. Surprisingly, 90 percent of these patients showed deficiency.Though afew scientific studies* have attempted to study this aspect, the link betweenVitamin D deficiency and chronic pancreatitis is still not well understood.

In order to understand basic characteristics of patients who are they and what puts them at risk of

developing chronic pancreatitis, we tried to analyze the patients data obtained while recording their

history.

and others are also showing significant improvement in their

condition.

In early years, CP patients were being treated with Ayurvedic formulations for long years.

Gradually, the duration of Ayurvedic treatment has been customized for one year. It is found

effective in relieving symptoms of patients as well as in bringing significant change in their

quality of life.

Encouraging trend: a large number of patients want to get better and are

opting for Ayurvedic treatment.

But after being put on herbo mineral Ayurvedic

formulations, a significant improvement was seen

in the quality and span of life among CP patients.

It is a proud moment to share that our first patient

who enrolled in 1997, has completed 18 years of

symptoms free life. He is now leading a normal and

a healthy life.

It was also interesting to see that soon after an event Path of Innovation that was organizedat Dehradun in November 2014 to create awareness about the disease; there was a significant

rise in the number of patients who aspired for Ayurvedic treatment for CP. Here is a glimpse of

progress report 100 cases from 1997 to 2015.

Available statistics indicate that the life expectancy of a majority of the patients suffering with

Chronic Pancreatitis is about 9 years with moderate to severe physical and mental debility.

GENESIS

Meerut-based Vaidya Chandra Prakash was a master of Rasa Shastra,whoin his clinical practice used Ayurvedic medicines prepared at his residence

under the able guidance of his Guru Maharaj ji. He used to put his

intuitions into practice and developed many new formulations in his life

time. In 1973, one of his herbo-mineral formulations brought miraculous

recovery to a terminally ill patient of pancreatic cancer. Thereafter, the

same formulation completely cured many patients suffering with Chronic

Pancreatitis. Though these evidences were documented, it was only in

1997; it was done meticulously.

Following the data obtained from the clinical observations, details of

those 45 patients who have completed Ayruvedic treatment,

is presented here.

It was found that all these patients were diagnosed using

modern diagnostic tools. 17 patients were diagnosed

through MRCP and 12 through ERCP. Given that, CP is

difficult to diagnose, MRCP and ERCP are better diagnostic

tests over CT scan and USG.

It was observed that 12 out of 45 patients opted for Ayurvedic

treatment after two attacks, including the ones who suffered

one, three or multiple attacks. It is indicative that many of thesepatients resorted to Ayurvedic treatment.

I was 32 when my pancreas was mildly affected after I contracted chicken pox. And on one fine

morning I woke up with severe abdominal pain followed by vomiting. This was how I developed

chronic pancreatitis.

After being treated at the Orthonova hospital by Dr Manoj Sharma, I got discharged on the 8th day.

But I kept feeling mild pain every 2-3 months. I consulted many doctors in Delhi. But not a single

underwent all the investigations and reporta confirmed that calcification in my pancreas had

increased compared to last scans. Same treatment was repeated and I got discharged after 4-5

days, with the same instructions in the discharge summary eat zero fatty food, take small meals.

I spent hours on internet searching treatment for CP all over the world. I read many blogs and

comments on many websites to find out the permanent cure to this problem. But I could not find

even a single person, doctor or hospital saying that they have overcome this problem. Rather I read

a person could not live more than 7-9 yrs.

Amidst all this, a few of my friends insisted to try Ayurveda. Though I was not convinced I made a

Google search and came across a website www.ayurvedapancreatitisclinc.com. After reading all

the testimonials on this website, I felt convinced and next day, I made an appointment at this Centre

in Dehradun.

10 years ago, I was hospitalized for severe pain in abdomen, thats the first time I got to know

Seventeen years long pain freesurvival after being diagnosed

for Chronic Pancreatitis.

In 1991, I had sudden bout of abdominal pain and vomiting. My family rushed me to MBS MedicalCollege at Kota in Rajasthan. There I underwent a laparotomy and was diagnosed for Acute

Haemorrhagic Pancreatitis. After four months, I again suffered abdominal pain. I consulted Dr S K

Sarin at G B Pant Hospital in Delhi. After examination I was told about formation of pseudo cyst in my

pancreas. Dr Adarsh Chaudhary removed that cyst. Afterwards, I I remained well for six years.

In 1997, I developed Diabetes Mellitus. An ultra sound and MRI showed calcification and multiple

stones in my pancreas. I also had three to four episodes of mild abdominal pain and indigestion. I

tried with few consultants but didnt get any relief. At this juncture, some family friends suggested

me to consult Vaidya Balendu Prakash at Dehradun.

I started Ayurvedic treatment with Vaidya ji from 31/03/1998. He gave me few of his own prepared

medicines with dietary advice. I responded well and my symptoms came back to normal. I continued

these medicines for three years on daily basis. I have got major relief in my digestion and abdominal

pain. I didnt notice any side effect of given treatment. However, I still continue to suffer with Diabetes

Mellitus (Type II) and calcification and stones in my pancreas remain as it is. (No progression)

Today (25th June, 2015), I met Vaidya ji after many years. I am very happy to see many patients of

My husband Mr. Vikas Binani (Age 41 years) was diagnosed with Acute on Chronic Pancreatitis in

May 2013. In this span of one and a half year he was hospitalized many times and lost about 30 kg.

The whole family was in the state of mental trauma due to his deteriorating health day by day and in

course of time, there were other complications too.

At this critical juncture, my father-in-law happened to meet Shri R.S. Agarwal ji (Joint Chairman of

we are supposed to follow.

As on this day my husband has completed 4 months of ayurvedic treatment. He has gained 11 kg

weight and its indeed encouraging to see that USG and Blood reports are nearly normal now.

I am 29 years old, a government employee. From past 4 years, I had been suffering from chronic

calcified pancreatitis and was undergoing allopathic treatment. Medication included Creon 25000

TDS and pantaprazole OD.

I read about Vaidya Balendu Prakash ji through internet on March 2014 and reported in Padaav

My name is Jairaj Sharma. Now, I am 53 year old and live with my family in New Delhi. I had

been a smoker and drunker for thirty years, consuming ten cigarettes in a day. I also skippedmy daily meals. I weighed fifty four kg at that time. In Nov2013, I was 51 years, when for the

My name is Gopal Mehtani. Now, I am 45 year old and live with my family in Ahmadabad. I had

been a heavy smoker for twenty years, consuming twenty cigarettes a day. I was also fond of

very spicy non-vegetarian food and alcohol. My body weight has reached to eighty-five kg at

this time. In August 2003, my age was 34 years, when for the first time, I developed severe pain

in my upper abdomen and back with frequent vomiting. I consulted Dr. Haribhakti, a surgical

Gastroenterologist who made a diagnosis of Duodenal Ulcer after carrying an endoscopy and

started my treatment accordingly. Though, I stopped smoking, I continued taking alcohol during

She was admitted at Moulana Hospital, Perinthalmanna in Mallapuram, Kerala. There she was

diagnosed for Chronic Calcific Pancreatitis after undergoing many investigations including X-RAY,

ultrasound, CT scan of abdomen. She was treated with IV - fluids and painkillers and responded

I had been a chronic alcoholic for 25 years until I developed deep jaundice in May 1999. I was

taken to PGI Chandigarh where I was diagnosed for Chronic Calcific Pancreatitis with endocrine

and exocrine insufficiency with a mass lesion in the head of pancreas and stricture in common

bile duct. Here, I was treated with IV fluids, pain killer and antibiotics.

I remained well for fifteen months.

In August 2000, i suffered with acute pain in my upper abdomen which was radiating to back with

strong nausea. I was treated locally by a gastroenterologist with I/V fluid and pain killer for few

days. Afterwards,I used to have continuous and dull pain in my back and upper abdomen with an

unexplained weakness and gradual weight loss. This all affected my quality of life badly. I was admitted

into AIIMS, Delhi (CR- 639186) from 13/02/2001 to 28/02/01. The CECT and MRCP of abdomen reconfirmed the diagnosis of chronic Calcific Pancreatitis. I was treated with Pain killer, antibiotics and

IV fluids. At this juncture, I was also recommended for some surgical procedure which I refused and

came back to my home town in Jammu.

I was born in a middle class family in Agra. We are strict vegetarian, non tobacco and non alcoholic. I

lost my father when I was eleven years old. He was a teacher and my mother is a housewife. I started

earning from the age of fourteen due to financial constrain by giving tuitions in my home town.

When I turned nineteen I developed anorexia (loss of appetite, indigestion, weakness and gradualweight-loss). Local doctors treated me for digestion with enzymes, vitamins and anti-amoebic

medicines. Those had partial impact on my health for a while. But I continued to lose more weight

and also developed continuous pain in the middle of my back. On the advice of Dr. Mukesh Garg, a

I was 32 when my pancreas was mildly affected after I contracted chicken pox. And on one fine

morning I woke up with severe abdominal pain followed by vomiting. This was how I developed

chronic pancreatitis.

After being treated at the Orthonova hospital by Dr Manoj Sharma, I got discharged on the 8th

day. But I kept feeling mild pain every 2-3 months. I consulted many doctors in Delhi. But not a

single doctor assured me of a permanent cure to Chronic Pancreatitis. Instead doctors told me

chronic pancreatitis was a life threatening disease and some doctors even told me that a person

with this disease could live up to 9 years.

In 2006, I was 18 when for the first time, I was hospitalized it was chronic pancreatitis, the doctors

said. Thereafter, I knew I had to live with this disease till I breathe my last. But things changed, and

today at 26, I am leading a healthy and painless life.

My journey with pancreatitis was painful periodic episodes of unbearable abdominal pain,

numerous hospital visits and repeated medication, until I came to Padaav Ayurvedic Centre in

Dehradun. And I must say, Padaav is not just a hospital but is a true care centre.

Before coming to the Centre, this disease affected me and my family financially, morally,

psychologically and socially. Actually very little is known about this disease among general

Golden Hospital at Rohini under Dr. S.P. Demble. He was treated with IV fluids, pain killer,

antibiotics and antacid for three days. The laboratory investigation showed elevated serum

amylase in his blood. Here, for the first time, he heard the word of Chronic Pancreatitis (CP) in his

life. He remained well for 18 months and in January 2002 while he was visiting Moga (Punjab).

Once again he had severe pain in upper abdomen. This time he was admitted under Dr. B K

abdominal pain & vomiting in two years of time. I was very scared and frightened with the

prognosis. My husband consulted many hospitals in Lucknow and Delhi.

After deliberate search we consulted Padmashri Vaidya Balendu Prakash on 24 May, 2002. He

treated me with his medicines and dietary advice for one year and stopped all my previous

treatment. I did not observe any side-effects of his treatment and regained my health and 10kg

development of herbo mineral formulation for CP was launched on 14 January 2015 under theaegis of Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST), Govt. of Uttarakhand.
