Book swap – books are best when you share!Encouraging children to recommend books to each other is a great way to generate enthusiasm and playground chatter about reading. Why not set up a book swap day once a month and get the class to lend a book they’ve enjoyed recently to a friend?

Talking about booksAfter a child has finished reading a book, encourage them to write a short review. Ask them to answer the following questions:

• What is the book called?

• Who wrote it? If the book was illustrated, who did the illustrations?

• What mark would you give the book out of ten?

• What did you like most about the book?

• What was your favourite bit?

• Was there anything you didn’t like about the book?

• Would you recommend the book to a friend?

Make a book collageIn Are You Sitting Comfortably?, Leigh Hodgkinson makes use of lots of different patterns and cut-out shapes to create the beautiful imagery. Take this as inspiration and ask your group to make a collage recreating their favourite book cover. Use the covers to make a display.

Write to an author or illustratorIf there’s a book you’ve really enjoyed reading as a class, why not get the children to write a letter to the author or illustrator? If authors are happy to be contacted they usually leave their contact details on their website.
