    GENERAL MANAGER’S CORNER

The holiday season is rapidly approaching and this year, more than any other year it will require creativity, ingenuity, while respecting the safety precautions necessary in an effort to host traditional dining while emphasizing safe operating procedures. Although we have had to alter our Traditional Events, we are excited to resume customary celebrations, in a new format for our membership at Avila Golf and Country Club.

Start the holiday season on Thursday, November 26th with Thanksgiving. Avila will offer our always popular extensive take-out. If you want to spend Thanksgiving with Avila reserve your time at The Avila Family Style Thanksgiving. This will be held in our outdoor dining venue, the Terrace, and we are adding additional outdoor tables on the patio area around the putting green. Similar to golf tee times, we will offer seating times, every fifteen minutes from 12:00 – 1:15 pm. Reservations are required and we ask that you arrive promptly at your seating time. We will seat three families per fifteen minutes to control proper social distancing. The largest reservation will be for six (6) family members.

WAY TO GOCongratulations to Avila members Steve Stamkos, Victor Hedman and Alex Killorn for their contributions to the Tampa Bay Lightning’s victorious road to winning the Stanley Cup. Victor was the winner of the Conn Smythe trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs, scoring ten goals in the six playoff games. We loved hosting Lord Stanley and the Champs at the Club!

The always so popular Victorian Holiday Celebration Dinner will be held on Wednesday December 9th with seating available from 5:30 – 7:30 pm on our Terrace and Patio. Chef Kent is offering a take-out and deliver to your door Family Package which serves four people to give you another option to celebrate within the comfort of your own home. Menu’s are located inside this addition of the Ventana’s.

Santa Claus will be coming to Avila on Saturday, December 12th from 9:00am – 12:00 pm. Santa will offer a drive by greeting which includes a COVID safe, photo area. Each child will receive Santa’s special Breakfast box from Santa himself along with warm wishes for Christmas from the North Pole.

The Traditional Hanukkah Dinner will take place on Wednesday night, December 16th with reserved seating from 5:30 – 7:30 pm on the Terrace and Patio similar to our offerings for Thanksgiving and Victorian Christmas. Chef Kent Specht will have a take-out and delivery meal as well. Reservations are mandatory for any special event due to COVID-19 safety precautions.

On behalf of the entire staff at Avila Golf and Country Club we want to thank each and every one of you for your continued support during the past nine months. We continue to make the best of these very difficult times and this holiday season is very special, because of you! Wishing all a happy and healthy holiday season.

    FROM THE TENNIS COURTS

    RACQUET RESTRINGING

When should you restring your tennis racquet? As a rule of thumb, you should restring your racquet in a year as many times as you play in a week. For example, if you play 3 times a week, you should restring your racquet every 4 months.

    HOLIDAY GIFT IDEAS & DRAWING

Avila Tennis is stocked with great gift ideas for the holidays! From tennis apparel, balls, racquets, shoes, and lessons to stocking stuffers like wristbands, socks, dampeners, and gift certificates, we have it all!

For every $20.00 spent at Avila Tennis, your name will be placed in a drawing for great prizes!

    1st Prize – Tennis Shoes

    2nd Prize – Tennis Bag

    3rd Prize – Maxx Sunglasses

TENNIS TIP – IMPROVE YOUR DROP SHOT

A drop shot can be a very effective shot in tennis if done correctly. Make sure to have the right grip, swing and positioning when hitting a drop shot. Grip - Have your racquet on an angle position, facing up. This will help you put some backspin on the ball. Swing – Your swing should be very short. Have the racquet by your side. Positioning – You should try to hit a drop shop from ”no man’s land” to closer to the net. Try these 3 steps in order to improve your drop shot and enjoy making your opponent run.

    FROM THE PRO

As we arrive into golf season, our schedule of events is still up in the air. We are having the Shootout de Avila Member/Member November 6-8, but that is the only confirmed event on the calendar. As we are able to host events more often, we will continue to post on clubster and through email.

Congratulations to Vinny Testaverde who captured the 2020 Senior Club Championship firing rounds of 74-74 in some pretty blustery conditions. He won by 7 strokes and was certainly on form!

Remember, if any of you need any cart work done, we have West Coast Golf Cars here every Thursday (as needed) to do work on your golf carts. They make it super easy and convenient with most work completed on the same day. Even if you want to add an accessory, we can get it done for you anytime you are ready.

As always, if you need any corporate products, we are your one source for just about anything imaginable. We already provide many products to many Avila members at great prices and offer a convenient process for you. If you want something drop shipped, no problem! Stop by and inquire if this interests you.

FANTASTIC FEATSFormer hockey player and Avila member, Danny Gare, made his 1st hole in one on #17. The date was October 6th, and he hit a 6-iron from 155 yards. The best part was he was playing with 3 dear friends including Avila member Jon Swensson, Larry Brunner, and Craig Ramsey. Craig was Danny’s former line mate in the NHL! By the way, the ace led to a score of 70, and a few cocktails on the Terrace!

    COACH’S CORNER

Congrats to Steven Stamkos, Victor Hedman, Alex Killorn and the rest of the Tampa Bay Lightning on winning the Stanley Cup! What an amazing run and finish to an extremely challenging season. I would also like to congratulate our professional golfers on a successful summer playing in a very different and difficult tournament environment. Hopefully, we will get back to a normal event schedule soon.

    Scott WickhamDirector of Instruction

    CONTACT IS KING…

It is the time of year where the fairways begin to firm up and we all experience more distance with our drivers. In order to hit your best and longest drives…CONTACT IS KING! This means hitting the ball in the center of the club face as opposed to the toe or heel. During lessons and practice sessions, I use face tape and/or powder to help you notice exactly where you are striking the ball. Below is a photo showing where this golfer hit the previous 3 shots.

TURF TALKWe started the month off by dryjecting the greens. DryJect uses a high-speed, water-based injection system to blast aeration holes through the root zone to fracture the soil. This means compaction is relieved, water infiltration is increased, and the soil is amended with high volumes of material all at the same time. These factors together help to improve the overall conditions and health of the greens.

In the images on the right you will see where the high traffic area to the right of 1 green was converted into a pine straw bed. Also, we just completed installing pine straw throughout the entire golf course in preparation for the busy season ahead.

Around the perimeters of the golf course you will notice where the root pruner has left its mark. This practice is carried out to help the turf in areas where it is weak due to shade and having to compete with tree roots for water and nutrients. The machine only cuts roots that are outside the tree’s dripline or canopy. This practice does not damage the health of the tree. Look forward to seeing you on the course!
