VO TRONG NGHIA Natural Modern

Vo Trong Nghia strives to make the world a better place, and tackles that titanic task in tune with nature. With the humble ambition of one who does not want to see the tsunami of urban development and prosperity destroy the essential landscapes of his country, the architect returned to Vietnam after training in Japan to design peaceful forms in dialogue with the environment, pavilions of exact geometry and vernacular inspiration, and light structures where bamboo replaces steel. The tactile beauty, constructive ingenuity, and elementary elegance of these contemporary and eternal architectures could only seduce clients and critics, but the appeal of the first works has made it hard to perceive the stubborn commitment of their designer with the health of the planet and with the protection of a natural world threatened by unrelenting modernity.

Trying to avoid being routinely pigeonholed as a studio specialized in sophisticated bamboo constructions – and despite having raised many excellent ones, and also despite being associated with a company dedicated precisely to that –, the studio of Vo Trong Nghia, VTN Architects, has explored very different paths in terms of form and technique, but all of them sharing the common pursuit of sustainability, as well as assigning a significant role to vegetation, which in projects like the Farming Kindergarten even reconciles the educational functions of a nursery school with the agricultural use of its green roofs, interwoven to symbolically express the relationship between natural environment and human universe, so that the entwined or curled image of the building plan becomes an emblem of the intimate harmony defended by the architect.

However, this introspective meditation is by no means self-withdrawn, because the active social agenda of the office calls for a humanitarian outreach, crystallized in different experimental prototypes of simple and affordable houses that can help solve the problem of dwelling in deprived environments, and also the need for the temporary shelter of refugees or catastrophe victims. With offices in the two metropolises of his country, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vo Trong Nghia has become the most respected architect of Vietnam, and a role model for the younger generations, as much for his buildings as for his civic ethic, by which he understands architecture as a profession of service to society and in communion with nature: if the world must be a better place, this can probably only be achieved by putting that green goodness into practice.

Virtud verdeGreen Goodness

Vo Trong Nghia se propone hacer el mundo mejor, y aborda esa tarea titánica en sintonía con la naturaleza. Con la ambición humilde de quien no se resigna a que el tsunami de la urbanización y la prosperidad destruya los paisajes esen-ciales de su país, el arquitecto formado en Japón eligió volver a Vietnam para proyectar formas sosegadas que dialogan con el entorno vegetal, pabellones de geometría exacta e inspiración vernácula, y estructuras livianas donde el bambú sustituye al acero con ventaja. La belleza táctil, el ingenio constructivo y la elegancia elemental de estas arquitecturas contemporáneas y eternas no podía sino seducir a clientes y a críticos, pero el deslumbrante atractivo de las obras primeras ha hecho más difícil percibir el testarudo compromiso de su autor con la salud del planeta y con la salvaguarda de un mundo natural amenazado por una modernidad inclemente.

Evitando ser encasillado como un estudio especialista en construcciones sofisticadas de bambú —pese a haber levantado muchas excelentes, y pese también a estar asociado con una empresa que se dedica precisamente a eso—, el formado por Vo Trong Nghia, VTN Architects, ha explorado caminos muy diversos en las formas y en las técnicas, pero unidos todos por el común empeño en la sostenibilidad y en el protagonismo de la vegetación, que en realizaciones como el Farming Kindergarten alcanza a reconciliar las funciones educativas de una escuela infantil con la explotación agraria de sus cubiertas verdes, y hacerlo enmadejando su forma para expresar simbólicamente la interrelación entre el medio natural y el universo humano, de suerte que la imagen ensorti-jada o enredada de su planta se convierte en un emblema de la armonía íntima preconizada por el arquitecto.

Esa meditación introspectiva no es sin embargo ensimismada, porque la agenda social de la oficina reclama una proyección exterior humanitaria, cris-talizada en diferentes prototipos experimentales de viviendas sencillas y baratas que pueden ayudar a resolver el problema del alojamiento en entornos precarios, o bien las necesidades de albergue provisional para refugiados o víctimas de catástrofes. Convertido en el arquitecto más reconocido de Vietnam, y con des-pachos en sus dos metrópolis, Hanói y Ciudad Ho Chi Minh, Vo Trong Nghia es una figura de referencia para las generaciones más jóvenes, y ello tanto por sus logros construidos como por su ética cívica, que entiende la arquitectura como una profesión al servicio de la sociedad y en comunión con la naturaleza: si el mundo ha de ser mejor, seguramente sólo puede lograrse a través de la práctica de esa virtud verde.
