The Power of Prayer

Conversation is one of the most powerful tools we have in rela-tionships. There are books of conversation starters, marriage seminars on healthy communication, classes on interview conver-sations or networking conversations, and more. This is nothing new to Christians, for whom conversations with God have been foundational to faith since creation. Of course, we call it prayer.

In scripture, conversations with God helped Adam and Eve under-stand their sin and the ramifications of it (Gen 3:8-24). It helped Abraham advocate for Lot's family and the people of Sodom (Gen. 18:16-33). It helped Moses understand and accept his call (Ex. 3-4). It even helped Jesus submit to God's difficult path for him (Mat 26:36-46). In short and among other things, pray-er changes us and helps us change the world by better hear-ing and following God.

I'd like to invite you to join me in an intentional prayer season around two areas.

1. The first is Breakthrough Prayer for our church and com-munity. What happens when a congregation unites to pray col-lectively and consistently for God to break through in new and mi-raculous ways? Many have found God answering this prayer. This month, I'll be expanding my Breakthrough Prayer practice. I'll start prayer in the chapel on Tuesdays at 1pm, and then continue it in our neighborhood with a Prayer Walk. Please join with me in ei-ther or both parts of this prayer time.

2. The second is Praying our Way Forward as a denomina-tion. The Council of Bishops is inviting every United Methodist Church and every United Methodist to participate daily in Praying Our Way Forward until the conclusion of the Special Session of General Conference which ends February 26, 2019. Three suggested ways are:

• Engage in a weekly Wesleyan 24-hour fast from Thursday after

dinner to Friday mid-afternoon. Those who have health situations causing food fasts to be unadvisable might consider fasting from social media, emails or another daily activity.

• Pause and pray for our church’s mission and way forward daily

for four minutes from 2:23 through 2:26 a.m. or p.m. in their own time zone OR at another time. This is because the Special Ses-sion of General Conference will be held February 23 through Feb-ruary 26, 2019. I'm setting an alarm on my phone for this time, and adding it to my calendar so I try not to schedule over it.

• Pray using a weekly prayer calendar that will be posted on the

UMCPrays.org website from June 2, 2018, through the end of Feb-ruary 2019. The calendar will list a unique cluster of names each week. The names will balance United States bishops and dele-gates with Central Conference bishops and delegates. It will also include General Secretaries, Commission on a Way Forward mem-bers, the Commission of the General Conference and the staff of the General Conference.

Let us unite in prayer and petition to our merciful and wise God.

Prayerfully yours,

Pastor Jennifer Burns The United Methodist Church

Kicking Off Fresh Expressions

In order to allocate time for Pastor Jennifer to work on Fresh Expressions, the Personnel Committee

reviewed all of the Pastor’s responsibilities and made the following recommendations:

• The Pastor will only periodically attend the Trustee, Finance, and Nurture meetings going for-

ward. She will stay in close connection with the Committee Chair to stay on top of activities and

attend when there are special needs for Pastoral input. Pastor Jennifer will continue to attend Ad

Council, Personnel and possibly Outreach. Why these? Ad Council is a summary meeting as

well as an important decision-making body. The Personnel Committee must have the presence

of the Pastor or District Superintendent in order to hold a meeting. Outreach goals and Fresh

Expressions may initially have significant crossover.

• Bible Studies previously led by Pastor Jennifer will either be self-facilitated or led by Pastor

Deb, who has generously volunteered her time.

• We will continue Communion to shut-ins through trained volunteers.

• MidPointE, which continues to be forming as a Fresh Expression, will continue to be led by Gary

Hardy.

The areas where the Pastor’s responsibilities Will Not change, include:

• Sunday Service responsibilities

• Hospital and Shut-in visitation

• Youth Confirmation Classes

• Second Saturday

The time that will be freed up with these changes will be spent in the community listening, learning,

and forming Fresh Expressions of Church.

We are getting ready for caramel season again.

You can begin placing orders online by going to www.memorialunitedmethodist.com

and click the Online Ordering heading. Or you can call the office at 859-4444

This is a first come, first served basis, so get your orders in early!

We appreciate your support and we are looking forward to a

productive and fun time of fellowship while we help our church!

SECOND SATURDAY

August 11, 4:30-6:30

Notes from the Trustees The painting of the church has been completed with the exception of the exterior wood entrance doors. The wood veneer on these doors has deteriorated and must be repaired or replaced before the doors can be painted. A special thanks to Donna Ray for donating the masonry landscape edging blocks used to edge the planter at the Locust Street entrance. Most people are not aware that Donna maintains all of our flower beds. Thanks Donna for your contributions that greatly improve the beauty of our church. Thanks goes out to our newest Trustee, Bryan Bigness, for all of the sweat equity he has invested in our church over the last several months. Bryan has been working around the church almost every week on various projects. He had a significant part in installing the landscape edging blocks for the Locust Street Planter.

We are starting a new article in Pathways called “We heard it on the Grapevine”. This article will

address rumors that we have heard and give you the straight scoop! So here we go with the latest

rumors or comments we have heard.

1. I heard that Pastor John Guliano is moving to Normandy United Methodist Church. Is this

true?

Pastor John serves at the pleasure of the Bishop as do all UM pastors. Pastor John has no

knowledge of any future assignment.

2. Why wasn’t there any celebration of Memorial Day in the worship service?

We certainly believe in honoring all who have served and died for our country. It is through their ser-

vice to country that we have the freedom to worship as we choose in the U.S.A. With that said, we

want to always put God first, making sure he is the center of all of our worship..

If you’ve heard something on the grapevine that you would like clarified, send the question to the

church email and we will include it in the next Pathways.

We Heard it on the Grapevine by Kathy Garrison

Crop Walk

The Crop walk will be held on Sunday, October 7th. I will be the recruiter/contact person for anyone interest-

ed in participating. This year the 25% that is donated to local food banks is being matched by an anony-

mous donor! We can make a greater impact right here in our community! I have included some information

from the website. More information is available at: crophungerwalk.org/daytonoh

Thanks for your Help!!

Debbie Hildreth

Hunger is one of the greatest injustices facing our world, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Ending hunger is

possible and it is possible in our lifetime. You can help make it happen.

For early half a century, CROP Hunger Walks have ensured that more people worldwide have access to

nutritious, sustainable food sources. From combating droughts in Nicaragua to providing agricultural training

in Indonesia to stocking shelves in hundreds of food pantries across the United States, CROP Hunger

Walks help end hunger by raising funds to support local food programs and the international anti-hunger

work of Church World Service.

Stand with neighbors in your community who rely on food assistance programs. Partner with parents world-

wide as they ensure a bright future for their children. Support those struggling in the face of grinding poverty

and open up new doors of opportunity for them.

Tens of thousands of CROP Hunger Walkers are committed to building a hunger-free world. Join the move-

ment!

“The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi”

(Six week video study)

Pastor Debbie Holder will be facilitating a six week video study using the video “The

Rock, the Road and the Rabbi” by Kathie Lee Gifford with Rabbi Jason Sobel. Here is a syn-

opsis of the study: Are you ready to begin your journey to a deeper faith? In this six-session

video Bible study, Kathie Lee invites you to join her as she visits sites in Israel that have im-

pacted her life. As she shares her story, coauthor Rabbi Sobel, a messianic Jewish rabbi, pro-

vides fascinating background details that make the story of the New Testament come

alive….Jesus (the Rock) came into this world and walked the lands of Israel (the Road) to

show us the way to God. And when we are introduced to the mysteries of God’s Word (the

Rabbi) and understand it in the context in which it was written, radical transformation begins to

renew our hearts and minds.

We will meet on Tuesday morning from 10:00 to 11:30 am at the church. What is re-

quired for the study: Bible, pen, journal and open mind and spirit. Purchase of the book is op-

tional – chapters in the book for additional reading will be given after each session.

Dates of the sessions will be:

Tuesday, August 21 – Bethlehem, Where It All Began

Tuesday, August 28 – Nazareth, The Early Years

Tuesday, September 4 – Capernaum, Ministry Headquarters

Tuesday, September 11 – Galilee, Ministry Grounds

Tuesday, September 18 – Mount of Olives, The Triumphal Entry

Tuesday, September 25 – Jerusalem, Crucifixion and Resurrection

Those who wish to attend, may contact Pastor Debbie by email

([email protected]) or her cell phone (614-284-8491). Deadline to signup for this study is

If you need a printed copy of the news-

letter, please let me know in the office.

We are going to put names on the
