Please join me in congratulating Dale & Susan for a Job Well Done.

This month the article is not directly related to the Officer’s Handbook, but we wanted instead to give you a little infor-mation about our-selves. We are Steve and Carolyn Cotton, and were appointed to the position of Region H Trainers in July 2010. We gladly ac-cepted this appoint-ment – and you may ask why we were so anxious to get back involved with GWRRA in this capacity. The reason is YOU – the TEAM and GWRRA Members that com-prise Region H and all of our association. We feel that our region is among the best any-where because of the dedication and leader-ship that everyone in-volved exhibits. We live in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, and have been in-volved with GWRRA

since 1996 when we bought our first Gold Wing, a two-toned pearl white SE. We now ride a 2006 gold Champion trike. Some of our most recent involvement was serving as the Oklahoma District Directors from 2000-2003, and also as the International Directors for Leadership Training from 2003-2005. Steve is cur-rently a chemistry teacher in Sand Springs with 37 years of experience, and Carolyn has 31 years of experience as a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, and then for the last 6 years has worked for the Oklahoma Depart-ment of Career and Tech-nology Education as a Pro-gram Specialist. I just guess that Leadership and Training is in our blood!

Where do we start? Well, at the beginning, of course. You may recog-nize some of the next few statements as being part

of the vision of our associa-tion that we will follow. Regional Training exists to assist and provide commu-nications for your Regional TEAM, District Directors, District Trainers, District Educators and Members in accomplishing their training needs. District Training exists to assist Chapter Directors, their TEAM, and the Members in accom-plishing their training needs, thus allowing them to grow and prosper with a level of confidence and comfort not only in their GWRRA activities, but in their personal lives as well.

n the final analysis, training is about personal improve-ment. It’s about making your life better, reaching your full personal potential and helping others to reach theirs. Our philosophy is always keeping the Mem-bers wants and needs in mind, and also to be a coach and mentor who helps our Members how to

By the Book By: Steve Cotton Region H Trainer

The “By the Book” articles are intended to help familiarize volunteer leaders and GWRRA members with the policies, procedures, and information con-

achieve their personal goals. Knowing how to set goals for yourself as an individual, executing the plan that you develop, and then achieving your goal is a reward that will carry over to all parts of your life.

The Leadership Training Program (and us as your Region Trainers) will make every attempt to offer a virtual smorgasbord of sub-ject material available to the Officers and to the Members. Put another way, we will constantly strive toward making your learning experiences worth-while and beneficial.

It is always enjoyable to see and visit with many of you as we come together at the various GWRRA activities and conventions. If we have not met yet, then we will hopefully do so in the near future. Please do not hesitate to call upon us if we can help you.

Sometimes life just gets in the way. It is just a shame we weren’t born rich instead of so good looking, then we wouldn’t have to work. We have had some changes in our lives the past year that have been keeping us from doing all we want to do for the members of Region H. It has come to a time where we need to step aside and let someone have the jobs that can do them justice. The members of the Region deserve that. We will be out of the loop for a while and will look forward to the day when we can get back into the GWRRA family picture. If you are going to be close to Southwest Arkansas please give us a call and we will try and meet up. We will definitely miss getting to see everyone. We want to thank all of you for your friendship and look forward to seeing you all very soon. Dale and Susan JAM.

Region H Membership Enhancement and Couple of the Year Coordinators

·Explain that they are Members of the Association, not of an individual Chapter. They do not need to join a Chapter or pay any addi-tional “dues”.

·Explain that GWRRA is a non-political, non-religious organization. DO NOT en-gage in any confrontations regarding what is perceived to be “bad” about the organi-zation. DO NOT engage in any “negative” discussions about other Gold Wing or-ganizations who may be in competition with GWRRA.

Once they’ve decided to join, help them fill out the application - check to be sure they’ve completed all appropriate blocks. Do not forget to include your name and membership number to receive credit for “Finding a Friend”.

·If paying with a credit card, check the card for expi-ration date and write the credit card number and expi-ration date on the applica-tion. Check to be sure the applicant has signed their name. If paying with a check, be sure the check is made out to “GWRRA” a n d i s signed.

Every GWRRA member is a Recruiter for GWRRA. We are asking on all levels, Chapter, District and Region, when you have a major activ-ity or event with public in-volvement such as anniver-sary parties and conven-tions, set up a recruiting booth.

·Find out if they are a Member

Program. Some ex-amples of the re-quired documentation for the sections of the score sheet are:

Event Ride Schedule

– The Chapter pro-vides copies of the Ride Schedule to sup-port the activities.

Extraordinary Chapter Events or Activities

– The Chapter can provide photos, news-letter articles, and/or the ride schedule.

Chapter Web Site

– The Chapter pro-vides the URL and the Chapter of the Year Coordinator can ac-cess the site on the internet.

Planned Chapter Re-cruiting Activities – The Chapter pro-vides photos, newslet-ter articles, and of the ride schedule.

Parking Lot Practice

- The Chapter can pro-vide photos, and or the Ride Schedule.

In this article we will cover the expectations of the Chapter, District and Region Chapter of The Year Coordinators and what things to look for.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chapter Director c o m p l e t e s t h e “SUBMITTED BY” sec-tion of the score sheet and submits the com-plete packet with all supporting documents to the District Chapter of the Year Coordinator as soon as the Chapter has received the Full Area Run List that is released on or about January 10th

each year.

The District Chapter of the Year Coordinator with one other member of the District team will verify the Score Sheet Data and ensure all sup-porting documents are included. If any of the documentation is miss-ing the packet will be returned to the Chapter for completion. After all packets have been veri-fied for accuracy and scored the District Chap-ter of the Year Coordina-tor completes the “RECOMMENDED BY” section of the score sheet and the District Director completes the

“APPROVED BY” sec-tion.

Each District selects a Chapter of the Year from the submitted packets. The winning Chapter should be recognized for their efforts in the Dis-trict Newsletter/Web Page. The other chap-ters that participated should be recognized as well.

The winning Chapter packet will then be for-warded to the Region Chapter of the Year Co-ordinator by March 1, 2011. The packets will once again be checked for accuracy and the selected Chapter’s packet will be forwarded to the International Chapter of the Year Co-ordinators by April 1, 2011.

The Region Chapter of the Year will be recog-nized at the Region Con-vention and in the Re-gion Newsletter and on the Region Web Site. Districts are encouraged to recognize the Region Chapter of the Year at their events.

As mentioned above certain documentation needs to accompany the application packet for the Chapter of the Year

Chapter Director and Assistant Chapter Direc-tor Training – Copies of the LTP Tri-fold card and certifi-cates for the Horizon and Instructor Develop-ment classes should be provided to document their attendance. The training does not have to be completed during the current year. Not all Chapter partici-pants need to be pre-sent – the fact that the training was scheduled and held meets the cri-teria. In the following months I’ll keep you updated on due dates, paperwork flow, and any changes to the program for 2011. We are focusing this month on the require-ment that each and every Chapter have a Chapter Educator. It is the Chapter Educator who helps the Chapter Director maintain com-pliance with the IRS rules by giving a five minute talk at the chap-ter gathering, writing an article for the monthly newsletter and making sure training is available for the membership as needed. It may surprise you to learn that not every chapter in Region H has a Chapter Educator. There are many reasons for this but we need to address these and fill the empty positions. We do not want to just fill these positions that would not be fair to the membership. We want to find people who are willing to serve and then give them the informa-tion they need to per-form the tasks needed. To remind everyone how this is done, it is the District Educator who appoints the Chapter Educator with the con-currence of the Chapter Director. If the chapter does not have an educa-tor it is the responsibility of the District Educator to perform the duties for

the chapter until one can be found. The duties and responsi-bilities of the Chapter Educator as described in the Rider Education Handbook are: Promote and imple-ment the Rider Educa-tion Program at the Chapter level. Promote and partici-pate in such activities that will expand the Rider Education Pro-gram within the Chapter and District. These should include speaking at Chapter Gatherings and furnishing articles for the Chapter Newslet-ter concerning safety, availability of training opportunities and the GWRRA Rider Education Program. Develop ideas to in-crease participation and improve communication in the Chapter. Use the on-line REP database to maintain such records as neces-sary to facilitate keeping Chapter participants’ current in the REP. and enjoy our bikes and friends, but we must also remember how we got here, Education. It isn’t really all that bad if we look at what can be used to fulfill our educa-tion responsibilities: Our Rider Education pro-grams, public speakers at our gatherings, speaking about Motorist Awareness at a public gathering, con-

ducting a PLP, a work-shop on motorcycle maintenance, newsletter articles, etc. These all fall into the education portion of our 501(c)4. If we look at what we do at our gatherings, we may find that we are already doing many of the required educational activities.

But the next thing is that we then need to make sure that we document these activities and re-tain the records with our other IRS documents. If you have any ques-tions please contact your District Motorist Awareness Coordinator. Ride safe, Ride often and Share the Road.

HIGH MILEAGE PROGRAM

GWRRA is very proud to announce a new Member-suggested Contest! This contest was sent to us by Brian Roundtree from Wood-stock, Georgia, and will begin April 1, 2010, and will run through October 31, 2010. It is just as it sounds. The Member who has driven the most number of miles on his or her motorcycle or trike between these dates will be honored as the winner of the first GWRRA High Mileage Contest.

"It is an honor program, meaning that you are taken at your word and you provide the mileage in the database."

The data will automatically update and put each rider in order of the highest mileage first, second, etc. The winner of the GWRRA High Mileage Contest will receive recognition on this website, GWRRA’s Home Page, and in an article in Wingin’ It, our electronic newsletter, as well as a special certificate from the Home Office. (Editor’s note: go to http://www.gwrrabbs.org/highmile/index.php to participate)

Some of the simple rules as mentioned previously are:

Open to current GWRRA Members only

Total mileage ridden for the month must be given on your entries into the database

Mileage is to be calculated on a single bike or trike and not cumulative from multiple vehicles (no commercial vehicles are allowed)

This contest is for the pure fun and enjoyment of riding. It has seen very much success in other organizations, so let’s have fun with it and, remember, we are all on the honor system.

At the AR Convention May 21-23, Bryan & Emily Dunham were selected to represent the District of AR as the 2010-2011 Dis-trict Couple of the Year. Congratulations Bryan and Emily. AR is a District that is certainly on the move. You are an added asset to their team and we know that you will represent them well. Welcome to the elite group of District Couples currently serving Region H.

“We’ll give it our best shot!” This was the last thing that Fred and Mandy said to us as we wished them well in the Interna-tional Couple Selection Process. “We gave it our best!” The first words they said to us immediately after they walked off the stage.

The announcement at the opening ceremonies at Wing Ding 32, “Our new International Couple of the year, Fred & Mandy Mew, Region H!” When those words were spoken, our hearts swelled, we stood on our feet, began to cheer and applaud and we have to admit, a tear or two trickled. The competi-tion was tough but it was “their best” that earned them this new honor and distinction.

Congratulations Fred and Mandy! ALL OF REGION H IS SO PROUD OF YOU! We stand behind you as you take this new journey, rep-resenting the best in GWRRA.

News from the National web site. A New newslet-ter, the “INSIGHT” .

Extracted from the first issue, Mike Stiger writes;

Now that I’m Director of GWRRA, I have an oppor-tunity to improve our com-munications. The Interna-tional TEAM has come up with this new GWRRA Newsletter called the “Insight”. It will combine informational articles from all three program, Mem-bership Enhancement, Leadership Training, and Rider Education, into one Newsletter. Additionally, the link to this Newsletter will reside on the Home Page of the GWRRA web-site, as well as a link from each Program’s website. Also, we will send out email blasts to all of the Officers with a link to download it directly. Our goal is to get this informa-tion to the people that need it the most, our Chapter Officers. While we’re on the subject of communication, we have made another change to the Home Page of the GWRRA website. We have added a quick link button at the bottom of the page to reach our GWRRA Offi-cer Connection webpage. This page contains valu-able information that all Officers need to refer to. This new link on the main page will make it much easier to access the site. Communication is a major key to our success.

Until next month. Be safe and join in the FUN.

Here’s to another great Wing Ding!!. Des Moines really rolled out the red carpet. The people were very welcoming and the weather was great! Highs in the mid to up-per 80’s. What more could we ask for? It has always been said that the best way to en-joy a convention/rally is to be involved. Well I find this to be true! I was really involved this year. First I took the OCP. I recommend this to all members. I admit that I fought the idea of the class at first. But now I am glad I took it. I learned a lot about GWRRA that I did not know. I had been relying on too much hand-me-down information. I was on the team that won a Team Building Award. I still think that our con-tinuous line drawing should have won. (This will mean something only to those of you who were there.) I was able to be a judge for Top Gun again. Man these riders really put all they have into this com-petition. The 2-up Top Gun was great to watch. These riders work as a unit. It is an eye opener to see just how much a co-rider can help in these maneuvers.

Yes, I rode in the Amaz-ing Team Challenge. Like I said last month, this was going out of my comfort zone. We did not get to practice the course. We could only walk it 5 minutes before competition. When walk-ing it, I went “piece of cake”. But when riding, the lane suddenly got narrow and the turns tighter. The cone weave was easy, but the tall cones that were used turned out to be intimi-dating. As the descrip-tion of the Challenge said – This can be rid-den by any rider, but it can be humbling to the experienced rider. Every one who rode the Challenge had a goal. Many were to have a fast time and win. Mine was much more basic. It was to be able to ride the course and keep my Wing upright and my feet on the pegs at all times. I was able to suc-ceed in this, but my times were slow. The announcer stated that speed was not the only thing, but it was also important to ride smoothly. He also stated that my ride was very smooth. I did win 2 “awards”. I tied for the compass award. I missed a turn, went outside the course,

but found my way back. I also tied for the turtle award. This was tied with a member of my team for having the slowest time. I am ok with this, as I at least competed and met my goal with my Wing up-right, my feet on the pegs and each ride was improved. I recommend every one try this course. Oh, yes, if you were there and watched, I was “Moe” of the Three Stooges Team. I also meet with Larry Stiles one afternoon and MFA accomplishments and goals were dis-cussed. One of the things that he is glad to see is that there are fewer requests for MFA at Wing Ding. He said that the records show that there are more classes being taught at the District and Chapter levels. He is glad to see this. Thank You to all of the MFA instructors who are doing this. We owe a great amount of thanks for all of your dedication. There is also a new re-newal class in the devel-oping stage at this time. I got to see it and it should make it easier for every one to keep up their MFA certification. At the time of writing this, Terri and I are plan-ning on our long sum-

mer ride. We will be leav-ing July 28th for a 2 week ride. Some of the places we plan on going to are; Tail of The Dragon, The Blue Ridge Parkway, Mount Airy (Mayberry) N.C., Washington D.C, a cousin of mine in Chicopee Ma. , Niagra Falls, etc. The main rea-son I am bringing this up is because of the time of year and the heat. We will be using our cooling col-lars and our drink butlers a lot. In this heat we ALL need to remember to keep hydrated. That does not mean to take a drink only when stopped, but to drink while riding also. This does not mean only drink only when thirsty, but to drink frequently. This does not mean to drink soda, coffee and beer, but WATER and lots of it. This may sound bad, but this is a time to watch your urine. If you do not pee frequently and the urine is dark, DRINK MORE WATER!! I cannot stress this enough. DRINK LOTS OF WATER. This ap-plies to even short rides and short trips. Well this has become long enough, so see you on down the road. Steve & Terri Bockhaus Region H MFA Coordina-tors
