...to our Chapter Directors.....

Hi everyone,

We have officially begun our riding season! On Saturday, May 3, we held our T-CLOCS/PLP at Green Lakes State Park. The weather was questionable, but turned out well overall. Thank you to John and Rick for all their efforts. During this event John and Rick trained and certified a number of GWRRA members to become PLP facilitators, including one of Chamber D members, Bill Nickal. After the practice, we held a picnic in a pavilion with a beautiful view of Green Lakes. On Thursday, May 15 we gathered in Chittenango for our Motorcycle Awareness Event. We had a great turnout from Chapter D and Chapter T, with approximately 18 motorcycles displayed right off the main street in Chittenango.

Five Chapter members met at the Pit Stop (Sunoco gas station) in Weedsport on Saturday, May 17 to ride to the District Ride In held in Fairport, NY. When we arrived, we met with 7 other Chapter D members who had arrived Friday. After a BBQ lunch sponsored by Chapter W, we went on a guided ride to Bristol, NY and back. It was a very scenic ride and the weather cooperated. The next event was a dinner ride to the Waterfront Tavern in Brewerton. Of the 20 members who attended the dinner, most rode on two wheels. We sat on the covered deck, with a great view of the water, and enjoyed the delicious food and conversation among good friends. The first Chapter ride is scheduled for June 1, when we will ride to the Soda Fountain in Remsen. The weather forecast is for a beautiful day in the high 70's. We have a nice scenic route planned out, and we hope to see you the day of the ride. Our next Chapter ride will be to Tinker Falls near Truxton on June 15, meeting at Bayberry Plaza, Liverpool for breakfast at 8AM and rolling at 9AM. Chris and I have almost finished the ride schedule, and it will be posted on the Chapter web site soon. Please remember to check your email as I will be emailing reminders of, and information on, upcoming events and rides!

At the June 11 meeting will be be asking for monetary donations for the Food Bank. In the past we have collected non-perishable food for the Food Bank, but as Trish has pointed out, monetary donations go a lot further than food donations. For the same amount of money, the Food Bank can purchase more food than we can. Thank you for all your past and future contributions to this worthy cause. The need is there year-round.

We are still in need of a Chapter Director and Assistant Chapter Director for next year. If anyone is interested in either position, please contact or see Bob and he will be happy to discuss any questions you have about these positions. Let's keep our Chapter active and moving forward!

...to Assistant Chapter Directors.....

On May 15th GWRRA Chapter “D”, joined by Chapter “T” NY sponsored a “Motorist Awareness” night in conjunction with the Village of Chittenango’s Farmers Market in the Park. With 17 bikes and trikes lined up along the street, we attracted a lot of visitors or I should say, our Wings (and our token YELLOW Harley) attracted many looks and questions! It was a very impressive sight when Chapter “T” arrived as a group. Heads turned as they expertly maneuvered into their parking spaces. Even the State Police and County Sheriff Deputies stopped checking car seats for our four-wheel friends to watch the parade of bikes!

The Village of Chittenango was very pleased with our participation and invited us to return next year. I must say that I learned a few tips from organizing this year’s “Motorist Awareness” night. Much of our handouts focus on Motorcycle Safety and Awareness for the Motorcycle riders not our four-wheel friends. I would highly recommend that we update our handouts to focus on what the motorist should look for, types of motorcycles and riders and as our yard signs say “Look Twice – Save a Life”. I also think that being located close to the law enforcement group checking car seats gave us a good opportunity to pass out our literature on Motorcycle Safety.

We should address some of these issues with the four-wheel motorist viewpoint in mind. Try to think from their perspective.• Motorcycle lighting, such as flashing brake lights or headlights • We wear reflective clothing • We discourage drinking • We encourage motorcycle riding courses • Be more aware of their surroundings• Encourage driving defensively • Exercise extra care when approaching intersections • Stopping at safe distances • Signaling their intentions • Passing appropriately, never on the right• Exercising caution when seeing a motorcyclist riding in inclement weather

We must remain vigilant in our message to promote safety. We all know that there are many riders out there that give “ALL” motorcyclists a bad reputation because of their actions! I would like to see us continue to hold a “Motorist Awareness” session every year in May. This is also a great time to bring attention to GWRRA, our Chapter and recruit new members from the community.

Remember the life we save might be our own! Until we see each other again “Ride Often and Safe”!

...Chapter Rider Educator.....

It's Here :)The weather has finally turned around and riding is in full swing. We should know about the percentage of mental versus physical skills while riding, 10-20% is physical and 80 - 90% is mental. With these stats we need to be riding the best we can, all the time.

Mental things to think about while riding: understand the Environment around you - be prepared to change when your Environment changes like rain, fog, sun, heavy traffic (slow down), maybe its going down the interstate or riding the twisties for the first time this year. Play the "what if" game with yourself while riding down the road. (What if that car pulls out or what if an animal runs out in front of me or what if I'm running too hot into a corner, what do I need to do)??? We need to be mentally alert while the bike is in motion - yes even at slow speeds, that also means full attention on the ride and not under the influence of something else like drugs or alcohol including you medications.

One thing I want to stress is that you need to ride within your own limits and knowing that riding carries a certain risk - as if we didn't know that before. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Sorry I dozed off for a second - that could be life or death situation if your are tired and not mentally alert. If you are not fully alert then maybe it's time for a break - need to hydrate yourself or hold off on that ride ‘til another day.

Lets hope the nice weather stays for a while and that we put many safe miles on our bikes this year.

As always,

Ride Safe, Ride Smart

...to our Membership Enhancement Coordinator....

First of all, I wish to “Thank Everybody” for their continued concern over my mishap down the cellar stairs as well as your kind words of sympathy over the loss of my eldest son. It’s the compassion of my friends who have made it easier to get thru this “unfortunate chapter” of my life. I also wish to thank you for the hanging flower pot…it’s beautiful!

Last month we introduced our newest member, David Jones to our family. He lives in Evans Mills so we know he had somewhat of a drive in order for him to attend our gathering. Here’s hoping we get to see more of him in the future. Our attendance may dwindle somewhat over the next several months as some of us get to enjoy our summer traveling and camping to faraway places. Whichever way you travel the road, just be aware of your surroundings. Over the past few weeks Jim & I have noticed more and more drivers (of automobiles) trying to beat out the traffic lights or cutting in front of us…and I’m talking about us in our truck! It isn’t just motorcycles that these folks don’t see! So, please drive safely and keep your eyes scanning your surroundings to see what the “other guy” is going to do!

Be sure to stop at the table and pick up whatever brochures, bumper stickers, handle bar tags or “Ch D” cards (for leaving at our sponsors when you visit them), that you need. Here is the website for the free 2 month Trial membership:
