“Staying at the Shore Inne”

Weʼve been talking in recentcolumns about the Shore Inneand the ghost that seems tohover around that section of EastShore Avenue. Hereʼs an adver-tising postcard for the Shore Innerecently donated to The Archivesby David Cruthers. No date is onthe card but it probably goesback to the 1960s or early 1970s.Note the 203 area code that weall lived with for so very long be-fore our section of Connecticutwas changed to the 860 prefix.Even more so, note the prices. Atthose rates, who couldnʼt affordrooms at $20-$25 dollars a day! When I was a child, we had fam-ily friends who stayed at theShore Inne around the time theywere deciding to rent a cottage

Graham Gavert“FROM THE ARCHIVES”

for the month of August. I re-member the rooms being verybasic, clean, with wire-framedbeds and those white curtainswith the ruffled edges. The wallswere probably paper-thin but thesetting was quintessential shore-line hospitality. A fun place tostay with all the beach amenitieswe treasure. Anecdotally, wehave all probably heard of peoplewho stayed at the Shore Inne astheir introduction to Groton LongPoint and who then decided torent or buy homes so they couldreturn year after year. Thus aretraditions of summering at Gro-ton Long Point born…

White Chicken andCorn Chili

This is what I call a dumpsoup. You open up some cansand jars and dump it all into apot and let it cook away. It iseasy and so delicious. This hasbeen a family recipe for over 20years; hope you enjoy it asmuch as we do. Hominy is thekey ingredient. Hominy is basi-cally puffed corn and it come ei-ther white or yellow. I preferyellow but only for the color itprovides to the soup. You canfind it in the corn section ofmost super markets, if not lo-cated in that aisle check the in-ternational section. This willwarm you up on a cool summernight or serve for a Super Bowlparty. Corn bread and a saladmake it a meal.

Ingredients

1 T olive oil1 medium onion, diced (about1 1/2 cups)1 minced clove of garlic1 teaspoon ground cumin3 chicken breasts, boned, skinned cut into bite sizepieces2 small cans of choppedgreen chilies1 12 oz can of corn1 12 oz can of creamed corn

1 15 oz can of hominy,drained2 cups low-sodium 1 T oregano 1T chili powder1 15 oz can of redi—cut toma-toes1 8 oz jar salsa verde or regu-lar salsa

Garnish:Shredded Mexican cheese, chopped avocado, limewedges, 2 tablespoonschopped fresh cilantro leaves

Directions:

Heat the oil in large pot overmedium high heat. Cook onion, garlic and cumin until tender.Stir in the chicken. Stir untilchicken is blended in. Addhominy, both corns ( notdrained) , chilies, chicken stock, oregano, tomatoes, salsa andchili powder .

Cover and cook over lowheat, stirring occasionally, for 30minutes.

Ladle into individual bowlsand top each serving withcheese, cilantro, avocado and alime wedge.

Katyʼs Kitchen column thisweek features an everyday en-trée combining chicken withcorn into a chili. There is a rich-ness to the chili and a sweet-ness from the corn andtomatoes. The key trait for theaccompanying white wine willbe outstanding acidity to pro-vide contrast. And we are goingto look to South Africa for theideal candidate.

South Africa is now home tosome terrific fine wines. In fact,South Africa rates among theworldʼs ten largest producers ofwine with annual bottlings num-bering over one billion. SouthAfricaʼs wine industry datesback to the mid-1600s. At thattime the Cape Town area was away station for the Dutch sailingindustry. Sailors on long voy-ages were susceptible to thedisease, Scurvy, which is a Vita-min C deficiency. Thus, consid-erable land was dedicated togrape growing as a source ofVitamin C. This developmentled to a fledgling wine industry, though wine itself is largely de-void of Vitamin C.

Despite its long history ofwinemaking, South Africaʼswine industry languished formuch of the 20th century asvarious countries boycottedSouth African products as aprotest against its Apartheidpolicies. There was a fine wine-making renaissance whenApartheid ended in the 1990s.

South African wines typicallyhad been rustic with coarse tex-tures and considerable tannins.International consultants werebrought in to modernize thewine industry. Improved viticul-tural and winemaking tech-niques followed and the qualityof the wines soared.

The South African wine in-dustry is mostly situated in theCape Town area in southwestSouth Africa. The three princi-pal wine growing regions areStellenbosch, Constantia, andPaarl. The pre-eminent whitewine varietal is Chenin Blanc.Chenin Blanc is the most widelyplanted grape varietal in SouthAfrica (almost 20% of allacreage) where it is also knownas Steen. When grown incooler areas, the resulting wineis richly fruity yet has substan-tial acidity. Typical aromas andflavors include fruits such aspear and pineapple with a brac-ing minerality in the finish. Donʼtfret if you cannot locate a SouthAfrican Chenin Blanc. Suc-cessful Chenins are also pro-duced in the Loire Valley inFrance. In the Loire the CheninBlanc wines are often labeledby their wine sub-region, mostfamously Vouvray. If you aregoing French, be sure to selecta dry bottling which will be la-beled “sec” to enjoy with yourchili.

GLP NEWS Page 6LLLL uuuuiiii sssseeeeBethencourt at CentercourtBethencourt at CentercourtHurrah! What was lost is found! Last week I lost

my reporterʼs notebook with all the notes on theMixed Doubles in it. And then, after checking everynook and cranny in the house, I found the notebookin my laundry basket. All the folded, clean laundrywas piled on top. Blaming company would be theeasy way out and so thatʼs what Iʼm doing, blamingthe company.

So, the Mixed Doubles pittedbrother against brother. Joe Boc-cia and Kim LaLima againstSteve Boccia and TenleyPrince. The first serve of the firstgame seemed to be a harbingerof things to come. Joe had agreat first serve BUT Steven hada better return and the game wentto Steve and Tenley.

At 1-3 Joe Served again butSteven was too strong at the netand his placements were excel-lent. The games progressed toKim serving at 2-4, Tenley at 5-2,Joe at 5-3 then Steve at 5-4 andwith a lot of nice volleys and a lotof movement on the parts of bothteams, Steve and Tenley won thatset 6-2.

The 2nd set was characterizedby deuces. A lot of games went todeuce as both teams semed to

get stronger as the match playedout. Kim at 2-2 won her serve andshe and Joe were ahead for thefirst time in this set and the matchended up at 6-4 in their favor.

With a slight break for a run tocover The Patronsʼ Social, I re-turned to the 3rd set with a 3-3 tiein games, then 4-4, then 5-5 -then into the tiebreaker which Joeand Kim pulled off to take thematch.

WOMENʼS SINGLESNice cool start to the day but

with a good breeze that played apart in the match. Kate Kovalan, late to GLP because of sports ob-ligations at home in Pittsburghplayed in the Adult/Child, over theweekend and then made it intothe finals against Katharine Miller. The afore-mentioned breezepicked up and gusted all over theplace in different directions. WithKate serving first a number of herstrokes went long but she wasstill able to pull out and win thegame. They played pretty evenlybut at 1-2 Katharine doublefaulted out giving Kate a 3-1 lead. But Kate lost her serve due tosome pretty drop shots made byKatharine, and then Katharinepulled back up to 4-4. Some verylong rallies ensued and at 5-4with Katharine serving, the gamewent to 3 deuces before

Kim LaLima, Joe Boccia, SteveBoccia and Tenley Prince.

Katharine could pull it out to winthe set, 6-4.

In the second set, the windwas still a strong factor andKatharine became more aggres-sive. and pulled out to a 3-0 lead. But Kate shrugged off some mis-takes and rallied back aggres-sively to a 3-3 tie. The scoreevened at 5-5, then 6-5 inKathrineʼs favor when, accordingto Amanda Gallagher, there was a“philosophical discussion on whocan call lets in a game.” Server orreceiver? Solved, and then Kath-arine won the set and match at7-5.

shot making by these two ath-letes. Typical of the caliber oftennis played throughout the setwas at a critical juncture of thematch when Steve and Charlie, who edged Joe Boccia in thesemi-finals, were deadlocked at4-4. Steve, who beat fatherSteve in the semis, withstood fivedeuces with some very difficultgets, solid net play, and a won-derful lob to hold his serve. AfterCharlie went to the serve-and-vol-ley to hold off the first matchpoint, helping to pull the matcheven at 5-5, Steve dominated hisservice game to go up 6-5. ThenCharlie went up 30-15 in his serv-ice game before the rains came.

After the delay, it took Steve, whose return-of-serve againstsome of Charlieʼs laser-likeserves was impressive through-out most of the match, only fivepoints to break Charlieʼs serve toearn the hard-fought victory.

At the outset of the match,Steve looked unbeatable. Hebroke Charlieʼs serve three timeson his way to winning the first set.But Charlie found his game, which featured a lethal forehandand net game. After breakingSteveʼs serve to go up 5-3, Char-lie put the pressure on by attack-ing the net, which helped himhold serve to even the match, set-ting up the entertaining final set.

What a terrific tennis match be-tween two young men who arefriends, fierce competitors, andwho work side-by-side five days aweek for the GLPYC Junior Tennisprogram. It took a little less thantwo hours, three match points, anda five hour rain delay for SteveBoccia, Jr., who is headed to Fair-field University this fall, to edgeCharlie Newell, an incoming fresh-man at Notre Dame, in the thrillingfinal of the Menʼs Doubles, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5.

The final set was an exquisitedemonstration of outstanding ten-nis, punctuated by incredible

57th Annual Pequot Race

An Olympic-caliber athlete, aplethora of young sailors, threesisters, an unfortunate meetingof two boats, rowing, swimming, and a bike waiting on shore atFisherʼs Island…these wereonly a few of the ingredientsthat defined the 57th annual Pe-quot Race. The Cormorant, with Laura Grondin, daughterIsabel, and Dave Burkard onboard, won the Pequot Trophyfor making it to the ʻfinish lineʼfirst to the Pequot Inn. TheFrank Murphy, Sr. Trophy (givento the boat and crew which bestexemplifies the spirit of this fun-packed race) was presented byClass A veteran skipper WoodyBergendahl to Chris and KristenChristian and daughters, Ellaand Emilie (and one on theway....), who sailed the Gull.

After the usual shenanigansat the beginning of the race(plenty of water flying betweenthe boats), the fun was momen-tarily interrupted when Woodyʼsboat, the Sandpiper, became

disabled when itsstay was hit andsevered by theboom of another boat. Suppos-edly, that was the end ofWoodyʼs day…until he decidedto take his motorboat over toFisherʼs Island for the always-fun post-race ceremony.

The race to Fisherʼs Islandwas close, particularly betweenthe Cormorant and the Swallowwith the Murphy sisters – Is-abel, Nuffy, and Liz – on boardwith Nuffyʼs son, James. Therace was decided when IsabelGrondin, one of the betteryoung snow skiers in the coun-try, helped row the Cormorantduring brief lulls of the wind, swam to shore once the boatwas near the island, andjumped on an awaiting bike onboard that she rode to the Pe-quot, completing an impressivetriathlon.

As usual, it was an entertain-ing day for all involved, whichalso included the Petrel, withJoe Devine and wife Tamarawith their boys on board, theWidgeon, with Jason and Jaime

(Young) McKinley andtheir sons on board, and the Skimmer, withMatt Rath and hischildren onboard…those are a lotof kids!!

The A-boat fleetwill resume its racingseason next Saturdayat 1:30 with a PointRace off Main Beach.
