"When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts." ~ Dalai Lama

It is our distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 2014-2015 school year! I hope you had a wonderful summer break, filled with experiences that allowed your children to learn, grow, and develop. ************************************************************************************************* Help Support the IHS experience through the PTSO!

The PTSO is looking for Volunteers. Email us at [email protected] or find

us on Facebook — Irmo High School PTSO. The PTSO operates to help the school

and the faculty/staff, and you can be a part of that through a variety of ways. One

big event of ours is the Scholastic Book Fair, usually held in the last week of Octo-

ber. The students look forward to browsing through books intended for their age

and interests! We also help the faculty/staff celebrate goals achieved with the students, such as PBIS

celebrations and awards. Hospitality is an important way that we help the teachers and staff feel sup-

ported and appreciated. Those are just a few of the things we do.

Your commitment to supporting the PTSO would be welcome! Please join, membership is only

$7. Also, please support our fundraising efforts, because all of the money we raise goes back into the

school and benefits students directly.

Dear Parents,

It’s time to elect School Improvement Council (SIC)

parent representatives. Irmo Middle School will contin-

ue to excel with your assistance and involvement. The

SIC is comprised of 6 elected parents, two teachers,

two staff members, two elected 7th and 8th grade stu-

dents, three to seven appointed representatives from

the school and community, and five ex-officio members. The SIC at Irmo Middle serves as

a liaison between the school and community by bringing together parents, educators, stu-

dents, and community stakeholders to collaborate in the continuous improvement pro-

cess for our school. Meetings will be held at the school on the third Tuesday of each

month at 5:30 pm.

We will begin accepting nominations August 1, 2014 through August 15, 2014. Nomina-

tions are accepted for any parent/guardian of an Irmo Middle School student who would

be willing to serve a two-year term for parents of rising 7th graders and a one-year term

for parents of rising 8th graders for the 2014-2015 school year. Any parent interested in

serving or those who wish to submit another parent’s name should do so with their per-

mission using the nomination form below. Nominations may be mailed to the address be-

low, hand delivered to IMS in a sealed envelope or emailed to Debbie Cullinan at DCulli-

[email protected].

The election to vote for the SIC members will be held Tuesday, August 26,

2014 at IMS from 7:30 am to 6 pm. The list of nominees will be posted on our web-

site by August 19th. Please complete the form below if you are interested in running for

the 2014-2015 SIC and returning by August 15th.

Tips for Summer Learning from

iAm School Counseling Department

1. Read Every Day

Take your kids to the library often and let them choose which books to check out. Listen to

books on tape. Subscribe them to a magazine. Take turns reading to each other. Allow

your kids to stay up a half hour later at night as long as they're reading.

2. Use Math Every Day

Practice the multiplication tables by making each point in a basketball game worth 7

points (or 8 or 9). Ask your kids to make change at the drive-thru. Make up math prob-

lems in the car or at the dinner table.

3. Get Outside and Play

Find ways to ensure your child is active for 60 minutes each day. Have him or her walk

the neighbor's dog, go swimming, play badminton or soccer, take walks, or go for family

bike rides. Look for safe, fun ways to get outside together year-round.

4. Write Every Week

Ask your child to write a weekly letter to his or her grandparents, relatives, or friends. En-

courage him to keep a summer journal. Have her write the family's grocery list. Organize

a secret pal writing project for adults and kids at your church or in your community.

5. Do a Good Deed

Encourage your child to help out neighbors or friends. He or she can volunteer with a local

group or complete a service learning project.

The above is adapted from a presentation by Brenda McLaughlin, Director of Research and Policy,

Center for Summer Learning, Johns Hopkins University and Jane Voorhees Sharp, Office of Early

Care and Education, New Jersey Department of Human Services.
