• In 2014/15 a new national curriculum framework was introduced by the government for Years 1, 3, 4 and 5

• However, Years 2 and 6 (due to statutory testing) continued to study the previous curriculum for one further year.

• In 2015/16 children in all years at Key Stage 1 and 2 are expected to now study the new national curriculum.

• KS1 (Year 2) and KS2 SATs (Year 6) will reflect the new curriculum for the first time this year.

• If your child is in Year 6 this year, they will be the first pupils to receive the new tests and the first to receive the new style of reporting results.

Key Stage 2 Test Changes

• In 2014/15 a new national curriculum framework was introduced by the government for Years 1, 3, 4 and 5

• Children in all years at Key Stage 1 and 2 are expected to now study the new

national curriculum. • This year’s Year 6 children will be the third set of pupils nationally to receive

the new tests. • The tests are intended to be more rigorous. The new marking scheme replaces

the national curriculum levels.

Page 4: Audlem St James C.E. Primary School Key Stage 2 Tests · There will be a selection of question types, ... • Ranking/ordering, ... •Pupils will still require calculation skills

• ‘Old’ national curriculum levels (e.g. Level 3, 4, 5) have now been abolished, as set out in the government guidelines.

• From 2016, test scores will be reported as ‘scaled scores’.

• This means it is very difficult to compare the assessment of a previous year with the current year.

• Your child will still be taught with the highest expectations and cover all required elements of the curriculum, similar to previous years.

• The new curriculum is more rigorous and sets high expectations which all schools have had to work hard to meet since the beginning of last year.

Assessment and Reporting

• ‘Old’ national curriculum levels (e.g. Level 3, 4, 5) no longer exist, as set out in the government guidelines.

• From 2016, test scores are reported as ‘scaled scores’.

• This means it is very difficult to compare the assessment of years prior to 2016 with the current year, but we can compare with the last two year’s results.

Page 5: Audlem St James C.E. Primary School Key Stage 2 Tests · There will be a selection of question types, ... • Ranking/ordering, ... •Pupils will still require calculation skills

What is meant by ‘scaled scores’? • A scaled score of 100 will always represent the ‘national standard’.

• Each pupil’s raw test score is converted into a score on the scale, either at,

above or below 100.

• The scale will have a lower end point somewhere below 100 and an upper end point above 100.

• A child who achieves the ‘national standard’ (a score of 100) will be judged to have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests. The score needed to reach the national average is decided after the tests have been sat each year to determine an ‘average’.

• In July 2018, each Y6 pupil will receive the following as part of their report: oA raw score (number of raw marks awarded). oA scaled score in each tested subject. o Confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard.

Scaled Scores

Page 6: Audlem St James C.E. Primary School Key Stage 2 Tests · There will be a selection of question types, ... • Ranking/ordering, ... •Pupils will still require calculation skills

• Previous Key Stage 2 tests were aimed at children achieving Levels 3-5 (with a national expectation to reach at least Level 4)

• In the past, additional Level 6 tests were produced for children who demonstrated higher than expected attainment, above Level 5.

• From this year, there won’t be any separate tests for the most able children.

• Instead, each test will have scope for higher attaining pupils to show their strengths.

Higher Attaining Pupils

• Previous Key Stage 2 tests were aimed at children achieving Levels 3-5 (with a national expectation to reach at least Level 4)

• In the past, additional Level 6 tests were produced for children who demonstrated higher than expected attainment, above Level 5.

• From 2016, there are no separate tests for the most able children.

• Instead, each test will have scope for higher attaining pupils to show their strengths. Those children achieving ‘higher scaled scores’ will be awarded greater depth in some subjects (not all e.g. Science).

• The threshold for a ‘high scaled score’ (to achieve greater depth) is different

each year as it is based on the scores achieved by all children nationally each year (like the scaled score of 100). However, based on the last two year’s results, a score of 110+ is required as a minimum.

Page 7: Audlem St James C.E. Primary School Key Stage 2 Tests · There will be a selection of question types, ... • Ranking/ordering, ... •Pupils will still require calculation skills

• Key Stage 2 SATs take place nationally in the week commencing 9th May 2016.

• Statutory tests will be administered in the following subjects: o Reading (60 minutes) oSpelling (approximately 15 minutes) o Punctuation, Vocabulary and Grammar (45 minutes) oMathematics - Paper 1: Arithmetic (30 minutes) - Paper 2: Reasoning (40 minutes) - Paper 3: Reasoning (40 minutes)

• In addition, some schools will be required to take part in Science testing,

consisting of three tests in Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Not all schools will take part in this sampling, which takes place on a later date.

• All tests are externally marked.

• Writing will be ‘Teacher Assessed’ internally, as in recent years.

The Tests

• Key Stage 2 Tests take place nationally in the week commencing 14th May 2018.

• Statutory tests will be administered in the following subjects: o Reading (60 minutes) oSpelling (approximately 15 minutes) o Punctuation, Vocabulary and Grammar (45 minutes) oMathematics - Paper 1: Arithmetic (30 minutes) - Paper 2: Reasoning (40 minutes) - Paper 3: Reasoning (40 minutes)

• All tests are externally marked.

• Writing will be ‘Teacher Assessed’ internally, as in recent years. Writing is

moderated externally through cross school and LA moderation to ensure consistency.

• Writing is assessed through a range of features including handwriting, spelling

and content – this is very challenging and has caused controversy nationally over the last few years due to some nationwide variations in assessments.

Structure of the Reading Test

Children need to manage their time and become very good at skimming and scanning.

Page 11: Audlem St James C.E. Primary School Key Stage 2 Tests · There will be a selection of question types, ... • Ranking/ordering, ... •Pupils will still require calculation skills

The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on two or three pieces of text. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test. There will be a selection of question types, including:

• Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’

• Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’ • Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the

weather is like in the story’ • Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’ • Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once

upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’

Handwriting, spelling and grammar are not assessed in the Reading paper. Answer will, however, need to be legible.

• The Mathematics tests have undergone the biggest change this year.

• Children will sit three tests: Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3.

• Paper 1 is for ‘Arithmetic’ lasting for 30 minutes, covering calculation methods for all operations, including use of fractions, percentages and decimals.

• Questions gradually increase in difficulty. Not all children will be expected to access some of the more difficult questions later in the paper.

• Papers 2 and 3 cover ‘Problem Solving and Reasoning’, each lasting for 40 minutes.

• Pupils will still require calculation skills but will need to answer questions in context and decide what is required to find a solution.

Checking answers

• Develop skills needed to check answers • Encourage children to actually re-do the

calculation

• Give children examples where mistakes have been made. Let the children mark it. Can they spot and correct the mistakes?

Page 55: Audlem St James C.E. Primary School Key Stage 2 Tests · There will be a selection of question types, ... • Ranking/ordering, ... •Pupils will still require calculation skills

Common errors • Missing out the correct unit of measurement

in the answer

• General presentation – final answer not being clear

• Numbers not clearly formed e.g. ‘0’ looking like a ‘6’

• Decimal points – missing them out or making them look like a comma

• 3 step problems – make sure children follow the whole question through

• Recording the monetary values incorrectly e.g. must be £8.90 not £8.9

Page 56: Audlem St James C.E. Primary School Key Stage 2 Tests · There will be a selection of question types, ... • Ranking/ordering, ... •Pupils will still require calculation skills

What we are doing in school

• Boosters in school – these began this week.

• Focus of these sessions is to help children achieve the very best they can NOT frightening/pressurising them.

• Test technique – unpacking the various papers and their unique features!

Page 57: Audlem St James C.E. Primary School Key Stage 2 Tests · There will be a selection of question types, ... • Ranking/ordering, ... •Pupils will still require calculation skills

• First and foremost, support and reassure your child that there is nothing to worry about and they should always just try their best. Praise and encourage!

• Ensure your child has the best possible attendance at school

• Support your child with any homework tasks.

• Reading, spelling and arithmetic (e.g. times tables) are always good to practise.

• Talk to your child about what they have learnt at school and what book(s) they are reading (the character, the plot, their opinion).

• Make sure your child has a good sleep and healthy breakfast every morning!

How to Help Your Child

• First and foremost, support and reassure your child that there is nothing to worry about and they should always just try their best.

• Praise and encourage! • Ensure your child has the best possible attendance at school between now and

the tests. Children will not be permitted to sit these tests if they are absent on the day of a test.

• Support your child with any homework tasks (including Booster homework). Highlight the importance of the tests and give time (quiet and uninterrupted) to revise.

• Time tasks and help unpick any problems – if in doubt ask!!

• Reading, spelling and arithmetic (e.g. times tables) are always good to practise.

• Talk to your child about what they have learnt at school and what book(s) they

are reading (the character, the plot, their opinion).

• Make sure your child has a good sleep and healthy breakfast every morning!
