Dear Parents and Students, Thank you for your interest in auditioning for Kinnick High School Drama Club’s production of James and the Giant Peach, Jr. No matter how much experience you have had on stage, this is the perfect show to audition for! For the audition, all students should come prepared to sing a selection of a song (one verse/chorus only) and be prepared to perform a short monologue (one to two minutes). Please choose a song from a stage or movie musical and use a karaoke track to perform to. Please do not use a recording that already has someone singing because we want to hear you sing, not anyone else. In addition to hearing you sing, we are also looking for how well you can portray a big character. For ideas for a monologue or song, please visit our website: http://khsdramalewis.weebly.com/ and click on the “Auditioning” link. If you cannot prepare a monologue we will have cold reads available. If you cannot bring a song, we will ask you to sing “Happy Birthday.” Parents, participating in this show is an excellent opportunity for your child to develop important skills in communication, teamwork, public speaking, and in building their self-confidence. We truly look forward to working with each student we cast and do everything we can to help them feel successful on stage and off. We will be holding a number of Saturday fundraisers to pay the cost of show royalties, costumes, sets, and props (it will cost about $3000 to put on this show). We will ask for parent assistance or food donations for these important fundraisers. Additionally, if you have sewing, painting, or woodworking skills and would like to volunteer a few hours in helping us construct costumes and set pieces, please contact Mr. Lewis by email at [email protected] or on Facebook as KHS Drama Lewis. Included in this packet are a permission slip, audition information and form, tentative schedule, and a short description of each character. Break a leg! Mr. and Mrs. Lewis

How Auditions Will Work To sign up for an audition time, please go to http://khsdramalewis.weebly.com/ and click on the “Audition Sign Up” tab. Open auditions will be held for 6th grade to 12th grade students at the Little Theater at Kinnick High School on both Tuesday, September 4th and Wednesday, September 5th from 2:30 PM-4PM. You only need to come one of these days, not both. Please come with your permission slip signed and audition form filled out (including the availability schedule). Students with a pressing need to leave early will be allowed to audition first. Each student will audition alone in the theater for Mr. and Mrs. Lewis and other production team members. We will ask you to introduce yourself (your name and grade) and then perform your monologue and song selection on stage. We highly encourage you to bring a karaoke track of the song you are performing, but this isn’t required. You bring it on CD, or on a mobile device (we can hook it up to our sound system). Please know that we are not there to critique you; we are there to support you. We are excited for you and know it takes a lot of guts to get up on stage in front of people. We may have questions for you about your availability or past experience either before or after you perform. After you have completed your audition you are free to go. We will post the callback list online on the Club website (http://khsdramalewis.weebly.com/) on the Facebook wall of KHS Drama Lewis, and in paper form on the doors to the Little Theater and outside the drama teacher’s classroom at YMS. These will be posted Wednesday evening by 7pm. Students will be called back for specific roles (i.e. James, Ladybug, Spiker, etc.). Callbacks will be Thursday, September 6th from 2:45-4:45 at the Little Theater. Please be prepared to stay the whole time. During callbacks we will assign students to roles we would like them to read in small scenes. We will give you a few minutes with your scene group to read it over together and then we will ask groups to perform for us. All of the callback scenes and music will be on the club website. Feel free to be familiar with these selections even before auditions! At callbacks we do not expect anything to be memorized or perfect. We just want to see your best interpretation of the assigned character. There will also be a short dance audition in which we will teach you a few steps of choreography as a group as then watch you do it. Callbacks must be concluded by 5 pm. The cast list will be posted Thursday evening no later than 7 pm in the same manner as the callback list (on the website, on KHS Drama Lewis on Facebook, and in paper at both schools). We ask that all students cast attend a first read through rehearsal on Friday, September 8th, from 2:45-4:45 at the Little Theater. Cast members will receive their scripts and music and we will read through the script and listen to the music together as a cast. We will also take measurements for costumes. It is important that you are able to attend this rehearsal, plus it’s fun!

And even before we see you audition we want to thank you for your interest in being in the show! We truly try to cast every student that we can because we know what an awesome experience being in a show can be. We look forward to meeting you. Break a leg! If you have questions, you can email Mr. Lewis at [email protected] or on Facebook at KHS Drama Lewis. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis

James and the Giant Peach Jr. Character Descriptions Ladahlord Ladahlord is a mysterious character who seems to have a hand in the magical things that are happening. Though he may seem a bit off, he carefully watches over James, making sure James moves towards to a better life. Ladahlord also serves as a guiding narrator throughout the story. James James is the hero of our story, on an epic quest to find a family of his own and gain confidence in himself. He’s a young boy with an unchanged voice, a clever brain, and an open heart. Ladybug Ladybug immediately takes on a doting, maternal role in James’ life. Grasshopper Grasshopper, the leader of the Insects, is ever the optimist and assumes a paternal role in James’ life. Spider Spider is a clever creature who becomes a fun-loving older sister to James. Earthworm Earthworm is a gentle spirit, although he can be a bit of a coward. Luckily, he gains enough courage to save the day by baiting some gullible seagulls. Centipede Centipede may be a bit of grouch, but he is ever-loyal to the pack, and by the end of the story, he s won over by James. James sees Centipede as that cranky uncle with a heart of gold. Spiker and Sponge Spiker and Sponge are the sort of aunts (or monsters) that you fear ever being stuck with. They take James into their home but only so that he can be their own personal servant. Spiker is the brains of the operation, and Sponge is more concerned with finding something to eat. A HUGE ensemble The ensemble will be portraying a variety of characters, including: Mr. Trotter, Mrs. Trotter, Karl Kreatour, The Matron Nurse of the Painswick Orphanage, Billy and Bobby Bobby-Cop, The Vagrants, The Reporters, the Ladies Garden Guild, The Hollywood Agents, The Angry Crowd, The Cruise Ship Crowd, The Sharks and Seagulls, The New Yorkers, and The Screaming Women.
