Male XLR

• Is an output – sound comes out of this

• Example of use – on a mic lead used to connect a mic to a mixing desk or portable recorder

• This end plugs into the desk/recorder

• This is a professional connector – it is used in recording and broadcasting sound

Female XLR

• Is an input – sound goes into this

• Example of use – on a mic lead used to connect a mic to a mixing desk or portable recorder

• This end plugs into the mic

• This is a professional connector – it is used in recording and broadcasting sound

Phono jacks (aka RCA jacks)

• Male connectors on each end of the phono lead

• Used to connect pieces of hi-fi gear (separates) together

• Is used for inputs and outputs• The black (or white) lead

carries left channel. The red lead carries right channel

• Lots of adaptors – phono to mini-jack etc

• A domestic connector – used in the home

Guitar jack or mono jack

• Used for input and output

• Connects guitars to amplifiers

• Is a semi-pro connector
