Unmet medical need: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients have difficulty emptying their lungs.

Company: Liberate Medical is a medical device company that was spun out of Apellis Pharmaceuticals Inc. Liberate aims to improve both the quality of care and reduce the cost of health care for patients with COPD.

Opportunity: COPD is a chronic respiratory disease that is the third leading cause of death in the US. Despite current treatment options, many COPD patients cannot properly empty their lungs during activities of daily living, for example walking up the stairs. This causes the lungs to hyperinflate, which can lead to shortness of breath and is the start of an unforgiving downward cycle that degrades quality of life, results in hospitalizations and often ends with death. The annual cost of COPD to the EU and US health care provider is $66 billion.

Solution: Liberate’s patent pending solution, Second Breath, uses abdomi-nal muscle stimulation to mechanically push air out of the lungs and rapidly reduce hyperinflation in COPD patients. It will be a device that patients can wear underneath their clothes and use to enhance their breathing during activities of daily living.

Solution: SecondBreath™ is a medical device to assist lung emptying in COPD patients.

Market: In the US alone there are15 million patients who could benefit from this device.

Investment: Liberate is seeking $700K to obtain clinical proof of concept and develop its beta prototype.

Market: There are 28 million patients in the EU and the US who suffer from hyperinflation. The worldwide value of the pharmaceutical market for COPD is approximately $13 billion and is growing at 4.6% per year.

Competition: The most common treatment option for COPD patients are longacting bronchodilators, which work by reducing the resistance of the airways. Although reasonably effective when a patient is at rest, hyperinfla-tion during activity remains prevalent. SecondBreath is expected to work synergistically with bronchodilators to address this unmet medical need.

Exit strategy: Liberate's exit strategy is to be acquired or form a strategicpartnership with a large medical company or a medical device company with a specialized interest. Exit is expected between product launch and obtaining premium reimbursement coverage.
