Habitat for Humanity of Washington County is seeking low-income individuals or families for its home ownership

program.Applicants will be selected on the basis of need for housing, abil-

ity to make mortgage payments and willingness to participate in the sweat equity process.

Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to the elimination of sub-standard housing both locally and worldwide. We work in partnership with God and the commu-nity to build simple, quality homes for deserving families in need.

Habitat for Humanity does not give homes to low-income individuals or families, but follows biblical principles by charging no-interest and making no profit. In turn, partnering individuals or families learn the value of home ownership by acquiring equity over the years helping them to break the cycle of poverty.

Red Cross offers tips for twelve days of holiday safety to keep the season safe, happy and brightHaving a busy time getting ready for the holidays? While every-

one is shopping, baking, gift wrapping, decorating and going to parties, the American Red Cross in Southeast Wisconsin has holiday tips to help make the season a safe one.

1. Prepare vehicle for traveling to grandmother’s house. Build an emergency kit and include items such as blankets or sleeping bags, jumper cables, fire extinguisher, compass and road maps, shovel, tire repair kit and pump, extra clothing, flares, and a tow rope.

2. Drive the sleigh and reindeer safely. Avoid driving in a storm. If travel is a must, let someone know the destination, the route being taken to get there, and how long it should take to arrive. If the car gets stuck along the way, help can be sent along the prede-termined route.

3. Help prevent the spread of the flu. Stay home if sick. Wash hands with soap and water as often as possible, or use an alcohol-based hand rub. Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing, and throw the tissue away after use. If a tissue isn’t available, someone should cough or sneeze into their elbow, not their hands.

4. Follow Santa’s fashion lead – dress in layers. When it’s cold outside, layered lightweight clothing will keep a person warmer than a single heavy coat. Gloves and a hat will prevent loss of body heat.

5. Use a Red Cross-trained babysitter when attending holiday festivities. Red Cross-certified babysitters learn to administer basic first aid; properly hold and feed a child; take emergency action when needed and monitor safe play. Some may be certified in Infant and Child CPR.

6. Avoid danger while roasting chestnuts on an open fire. Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food. If leaving the kitchen even for a short period of time, turn off the stove. This is important because unattended cooking causes nearly 90 percent of all kitchen fires.

7. Be a lifesaver during the holidays. The Red Cross recom-mends at least one person in every household should take first aid and CPR/AED training. Visit www.redcross.org/training for details and to register.

8. Designate a driver or skip the holiday cheer. Buckle up, slow down, don’t drive impaired. If someone plans on drinking, designate a driver who won’t drink.

9. When the weather outside is frightful, heat the home safe-ly. Never use a stove or oven to heat the home. Never leave portable heaters or fireplaces unattended. Install smoke alarms.

10. Cut down on heating bills without being a Grinch. Get the furnace cleaned and change the filters. Make sure furniture isn’t blocking the heat vents. Close off any rooms not in use and turn off the heat in those rooms. Turn down the thermostat and put on a sweater.

11. Home for the holidays? Travel safely. Check the tire air pressure and make sure the windshield fluid is full. Be well rested and alert. Give full attention to the road – avoid distractions such as cell phones. If someone has car trouble, pull off the road as far as possible.

12. Resolve to be Red Cross ready in the New Year. Get ready now in case someone in the household faces an emergency in 2012.

Adopting a Pet Tips on your new friend

Oh, rats…Close your eyes and picture a rat. What do you see? Is it a scary

image of a rat in your garbage? To me, when I close my eyes, I see the pet rats I used to have growing up. I see cute, smart, misunder-stood little creatures.

Did you know rats are one of the smartest animals? You can teach them over 100 tricks. Most dogs only know about five. Pet rats are also very clean. They clean themselves about 20 times a day. You can teach pet rats to stay in your pocket…no one will know that you have a rat in your pocket. My friends and I used to take them out with us and some of them took their rats to school.

If you purchase a pet rat, get a young one. Rats only live about three years. It is best to get more than one rat. Rats are very social and need to be around their owner and other rats. Rats eat fruits and vegetables. They need to chew on things. In the wild rats would chew on rotting bones to wear down their teeth. You can buy things at the store for them to chew on. Rats are a good pet for kids before they get a dog. A rat essentially is a tiny dog that kids can train and love.

“Keith” (whose name has been changed to protect his privacy), a recent Germantown High School graduate, honed is leader-ship skills as a Potawatomi Area Council Boy Scout. He started as a Den Chief his first year of Boy Scouts, learning how to interact, lead and teach Cub Scouts useful skills. Advancing to Boy Scouts, he became a patrol leader.

“Keith” encountered many obstacles throughout his Scouting career, from the freezing below zero temperatures when snow flies outside your tent to the times he wished his sleeping bag was waterproof. These challenges taught “Keith” skills that could not be obtained in studying a textbook or in a class.

Explore the World of Art

The Schauer Community School of the Arts announces visual art classes and workshops for youth ages 4 and up. Youth

classes are offered in various two and three-dimensional mediums. Students are provided with all materials needed to create their mas-terpiece. Classes will be held at the newly renovated Creative Arts Studios at 30 S. Johnson Street in downtown Hartford, unless noted otherwise.

Youth visual art classes during the Winter/Spring session include:Seussical, The Musical, Jr. Workshop (Ages 7-10) on Saturday, •January 14 from 12:30-1:30 pm. Make their own “Cat in the Hat” inspired hat with various media. Class will be held at the Schauer Center.Sylvester & The Magic Pebble Workshop (Ages 4-6) on Sunday, •January 22 from 1:30-2:30 pm. Sit and listen to the story of how Sylvester got his magic pebble, then make a magical keepsake. Class will be held at the Schauer Center.Puppetry Family Workshop (All ages welcome) on Sunday, •January 22 from 4:30-5:30 pm. Lead by Colleen Hughes, the actor who plays Sylvester from Sylvester & the Magic Pebble, this workshop gives participants an insider’s view of how theater is created. The group will get an up close and personal look at masks and puppets used in the show, learn some tricks of the trade, and make their own life-sized puppets. Class will be held at the Schauer Center.3D Etching (Ages 9-12) on Mondays, February 13-27 from 5:30-•6:30 pm. Create a 3D floral arrangement using etching techniques in copper.Portrait Drawing (Ages 6-8) on Wednesdays, March 14-28 from •5:30-6:30 pm.Hands in Clay (Ages 6-12) on Wednesdays, April 18-May 9 from •4:30-6:00 pmCarnival of The Animals Workshop (Ages 7-10) on Friday, April 27 •from 5:30-6:30 pm. Kettle Moraine Youth String Orchestra Auditions Winter/Spring 2012 Session

The Schauer Community School of the Arts will be hosting open auditions for the winter/spring session of the Kettle

Moraine Youth String Orchestra. Orchestra auditions will be held on Wednesday, December 21 or January 11 from 5:30-7:00 pm. Auditions are for placement purposes and are only required for new enrollees; current members need not audition. Auditions will be held, by appointment, at the Schauer Arts & Activities Center in downtown Hartford.

The Kettle Moraine Youth String Orchestra (KMYSO) is a chamber orchestra that provides an outlet for youth string players to grow to their ultimate potential. Students are introduced to a vari-ety of music and musical styles. Presto Strings is open to students entering grades 5-8 who are currently enrolled in school orchestra or study with a private instructor and are entering Suzuki Book 2 or equivalent. Bravura Strings is for students entering Suzuki Book 3 or higher and is admitted by audition selection only.

Rehearsals for KMYSO will be held at the Schauer Center on Wednesdays, January 25 through May 16; Presto Strings will rehearse from 5:30-6:30 pm and Bravura Strings will rehearse from 6:45-8:15 pm. Director Phil Scales will be conducting the Orchestra.

KMYSO is part of the Schauer Community School of the Arts, a year-round program offering music, dance, theater, and visual arts classes for adults and children. The current class schedule is available at the Schauer Center, located at 147 N. Rural Street in Hartford or online at SchauerCenter.org/CSA. Tuition fees apply. Local artist Janice Marie releases Angel In My PocketLocal singer/songwriter Janice Marie has released her new holiday

CD entitled “Angel in my Pocket”, a very special Christmas record-ing featuring 3 songs written by Janice Marie and Joe Scheibinger, and a host of beautiful Christmas songs in a contemporary style.

Janice Marie has remained constant in her love for music and people over the past thirty years. “Whether I am in the studio recording, directing a children’s choir, or composing, I con-sider myself blessed to be able to share life through the beauty of music”. Janice Marie has performed at many area festivals including Summerfest, Bastille Days, & Harley Fest. She has been featured at the Park East Hotel’s “Jazz on the Roof ” series, as well as the Cedarburg Cultural Center and Broadway Baby Dinner Theater. Janice has also been featured on local television, radio stations, and had the honor to sing the National Anthem at numerous sporting events. Janice describes her performance style as one that includes everything from Rock and Roll, Big Band, Country and Blues, to Jazz. “Angel in my Pocket” is Janice’s second CD and her first Holiday CD.

Janice travels with her keyboard player and business partner Joe Scheibinger, who performed all the instruments on the recording, and also produced the CD. It was recorded at the “Music Machine Studio” in Oshkosh, which is run by Joe Scheibinger & Janice Marie.

The title song “Angel in my Pocket” has a very special meaning for Janice. “The song came to me in the middle of the night about 6 months after my Mom passed away. Since I couldn’t sleep, I decided to spend some time at the piano. It was amazing how the lyrics and the melody poured out as if someone was feeding it to me. I have no doubts that my Mom is my angel and always with me.” The CD also includes 2 other original songs written by Joe & Janice, “That Child Brings Life”, and “Merry Christmas Baby”. Jingle Bells was recorded live at a job in Oshkosh and is done in a Reggae style!

The “Story of Silent Night” was written by Joe. Instead of just recording the song, it starts with a narrator telling the story of the priest who came home and wrote the song just before the Christmas service almost 200 years ago. The words of the song were so beautiful that they are still being sung by people all over the world. Janice plays the part of the Guardian Angel helping the priest to write the words of the song. Then Janice does an incred-ible epic rendition of the song.

Get Your Kitchen Holiday-Ready

The kitchen is one of the busiest rooms in the house—especially around the holidays. With

all the cooking, baking and celebrating going on, it can be hard to keep the kitchen clean. To help you give your kitchen a holiday sparkle, try these time-tested techniques from the pros at Merry Maids.

FridgeBefore putting •containers in the refrigerator, wipe container exterior and securely cover it to avoid spills and reduce odors.Get rid of leftover •items that have not been eaten or have expired. This allows room for new items. Save yourself this step by not refriger-ating leftovers that no one is likely to eat.Once a month, clean each shelf and bin •one at a time starting from top to bottom. Remove items and wash with warm soapy water. Wash the walls, too. Dry thoroughly.All-purpose cleaners are safe for most sur-•faces in the kitchen, including stainless steel appliance exteriors. Before the big party, apply a stainless steel polish for extra shine.Remove finger prints from stainless steel •with a glass cleaner, followed by buffing with a dry cloth. Whenever a product is used on stainless steel, the surface should be rinsed with plain, warm water and then dried to prevent streaking and water marks.Clean other refrigerator surfaces with a soap •and water solution.

SinkFor stainless steel or ceramic sinks, rinse the •sink after each use and wipe with a clean dry cloth. Drying the sink will prevent mineral deposits from building up on the surface.Once a week, scour the sink with a non-abra-•sive cleaner, such as an all-purpose cleanser or glass and surface cleaner. Do not use steel

wool, wire brushes or abrasive sponges.If you want to make a stainless steel sink •shine, use a stainless steel cleaner or a small amount of olive oil.

SmallAppliancesTo freshen up your disposal, fill it with ice •cubes and slices of lime or lemon. Then, run

cold water while the disposal is on for about 30 sec-onds. The ice will sharpen and clean the blades, and the citrus will release a fresh scent.

If you have stuck-•on foods in the microwave, fill a two-cup glass mea-suring cup with a cup of water and

the juice from one lemon. Microwave for about 30 seconds or until the water boils. This should create steam in the microwave that will loosen stuck-on foods, so you can wipe the microwave clean. The lemon juice will provide a fresh scent.

WoodenCabinetsFor stubborn dirt, wash around all handles •and any other grease zones with hand dish-washing detergent. Then wash the entire cabinet, including the handle areas, with an oil soap solution, such as Murphy Oil Soap. Just wipe lightly with the solution and buff dry immediately with a terry cleaning cloth. Always wipe dry with any grain or pattern.If cabinets are dull from wear or age, spray •furniture polish lightly across the exterior to fill in the pores and restore the life of the wood.Do not use acids or powdered cleansers on •cabinets. Use an all-purpose cleaner to spot-clean after heavy kitchen use.

Combine cake mix, melted butter and 2 eggs. Beat one minute. Spread in 9x12-inch greased pan. Beat cream cheese with 2 eggs and vanilla. Beat in 3¾ cups of powdered sugar. Pour over cake batter. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Bake at 350˚ for 45 to 60 minutes. Cool 20 minutes and sprinkle with ¼ cup powdered sugar.

1 c. butter1¾ c. sugar4 eggs3 c. all-purpose flour1½ tsp. salt1½ tsp. baking powder6 oz. apricot cake and pastry filling1 can (21 oz.) peach pie fillingicing:1¼ c. powdered sugar½ tsp. almond extract3 to 4 Tbs. milk

In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and f luffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine flour, salt and baking powder. Add to creamed mix-ture, beat just until combined. Spread 3¾ c. batter into a greased 15x10x1-inch baking pan. Carefully spoon apricot filling thinly over crust within 1-inch of edges. Then carefully spoon peach pie filling over apricot filling to 1-inch of edge. Carefully spoon remaining batter over filling. Bake at 350˚ for 20 to 25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Loosely cover edges with foil. In a small bowl, combine icing ingredi-ents. Drizzle over cooled cake.

thawed and drained⅓ c. sugar2 tsp. flour¼ tsp. nutmegGlaze:⅓ c. confectioners sugar1 to 2 tsp. milk

Heat oven to 350 .̊ Grease and flour bottom and sides of 9 or 10-inch springform pan. Beat sugar and butter in large bowl until light and f luffy. Add lemon peel and egg; beat 2 minutes at medi-um speed. Combine flour, poppy seeds, baking soda and salt; add to butter mixture alternately with sour cream. Spread batter over bottom and 1-inch up sides of pan, making sure batter on sides is ¼-inch thick. For filling, combine all ingredients; spoon over batter. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes. Cool slightly. Remove sides of pan. For glaze, combine sugar and enough milk until glaze is of drizzling consistency; drizzle over cake.

Cream margarine, sugar and egg. Add f lour, baking soda, milk and salt. Mix well. Stir in rhubarb. Grease 9x13-inch pan, pour in bat-ter. Mix sugar, cinnamon, nuts and coconut. Sprinkle on top of cake. Bake 35 to 40 minutes at 350 .̊

⅓ c. butter or margarine, softened⅓ c. packed brown sugar½ c. flaked coconut1 pkg. (13.5 oz.) wild blueberry muffin mix1 (8½ oz.) can crushed pineapple, well

drainedHeat oven to 400 .̊ Grease 9x9x2-inch pan. Mix butter, sugar and coconut; set aside. Prepare muffin mix as directed on package, fold in pineapple. Pour into pan. Spoon coconut mix-ture evenly over batter. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Makes 9 servings.

1 box yellow cake mix½ c. brown sugar1 c. peanut butter3 eggs1 c. water⅓ c. oil1½ c. chocolate chips, divided1½ c. peanut butter chips, divided

Mix cake mix, brown sugar and peanut butter on low until crumbly (set aside ½ cup for topping). Add all other ingredients (1 c. chocolate and 1 c. PB chips), mix well. Pour into 9x13-inch pan. Mix ½ cup of crumb mixture and remaining chips together. Place on top of cake mixture and bake at 350˚ for 40-45 minutes.

Preheat oven to 375 .̊ Spray two 9-inch round pans with non-stick cooking spray. Cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggs until mixture is very light and f luffy. Add extract. Combine f lour and baking soda; add to creamed mixture alternately with sour cream. Divide batter evenly in pans. Spread cherry filling on top. Combine streusel f lour, sugar and cinnamon. Cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle streusel over cherry filling. Bake 25-35 minutes until cake tests done.

Marcella H. “Sally” BuergerMarcella H. ‘Sally’ Buerger, age 83, of Mayville, passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at the Mayville Nursing Rehab, Mayville.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 16 at 2:00pm at St. John Lutheran Church, Woodland, with Rev. John Bonow officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 16, from 12:00pm (noon) -2:00pm at the church. Interment will take place at St. John Lutheran Church, Woodland.

Sally was born on January 18, 1928, to Alfred and Ella (Weiss) Buerger. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Woodland. Sally was a graduate of Hartford High School. She worked at the Herman Mutual Insurance in Iron Ridge and retired from the West Bend Company. In her spare time, she enjoyed watching the Milwaukee Brewers and embroidery. “Auntie Sally’” loved the many years that she was able to look after and babysit her many nieces and nephews while living with “Pat” and Irene Margelofsky.

Sally is survived by her brother; Elmer Buerger of Iron Ridge, her nieces; Christy (Conrad) Wild of Iron Ridge, Susan (Ray) Erickson of Mayville, Mary Ann (David) Roecker of Mayville, Diane (James) Qualmann of Horicon, LuAnn (Frank) Johnson of AK., Shirley (John) Thomsen of Hartford, Allice Hennig of Waupun. Her nephew; David Buerger of Iron Ridge. She was a Godmother to; Michael Roecker, Amy Erickson, and Ashley Jorhem. She is further survived by great nieces & nephews, other relatives & friends.

She was preceded in death by; her parents; sisters and brothers in law; Irene (Arnold “Pat”) Margelofsky and Lorraine (Harold) Wenzel. 1 sister-in-law; Sally Buerger.

Memorials may be directed to St. John Lutheran Church in Woodland.

Margaret was born January 24, 1931, in Kankakee, Illinois to Fredrick and Gretchen (nee Janke) Meyer.

She is survived by her son Fred Krueger of Hartford, her daughter Peggi (Sonny) Corbin of Lewiston, Maine; her grandchildren and great-grandchild; her brother James (Mary) Heimann and her sister Mary (Wally) Lorenz.

Margaret is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband William Krueger, and her brother Robert Heimann.

Memorial funeral services will be held Monday, December 19, 2011, at 5:30pm at the Shimon Funeral Home, Hartford with Pastor Doug Livingston officiating.

Family will greet relatives and friends on Monday from 4:00–5:30pm at the funeral home.
