Increasing Membership Through DiversityC l u b s

that needto increasemember sh ips h o u l dc o n s i d e rd i v e r s i f y i n gtheir member-ship. Member-ship diversityis necessary

because there is an increasingdiverse population base.We can no longer continueto believe that we exist in avacuum. We need to acceptthe fact that our populationis growing and changing andwe need to change with it.

Diversity is important to retainourmembersandalso togrowour clubs but most of all, it isthe right thing to do. As ourcommunitychangestoahighlydiversified citizenship,Kiwanisknow that they must help alltheir members understand, accept and capitalizeon thesechanges. People of varyingcultural background andexperiences can enrich theorganization, making it moreinnovativeandinteresting.Newand fresh ideaswill come intotheclub;greaterunderstandingof other cultures and anacceptanceofthesedifferenceswillbringabouttheeradication

of discrimination and distrust. We need to grow our clubsandopennewclubs.Wemustcommit our organization tobecome more diverse becauseourorganizationwillonlygrowas awareness and personalaccountability flourisheswithin our organization. Wemust reach out and includeor neighbors, colleagues andacquaintances from all walksof life inourefforts tomakeadifferenceinourworld.

A great way to begin todiversify your club is to havea specialmembershipmeetingwhere each member is askedtoinvitesomeonefromoutsideof their comfort zone. Bringa person of a different race,ethnicorigin,disability,gender,socio-economic group etc. tothe meeting. Show genuineinterestintheseguestsandhavean interesting guest speaker, preferably from a minoritygroup.Afterthemeeting, followup with the guest and listento their feedback and learnfrom what is being said. Mostimportantly, when you get amemberfromaminoritygrouptojoinyourclub, itisNOTtimeforcelebration.Itistimetogetothers to join. You must havemultiple members from anygroupinordertobesuccessfulin your recruitment drive. Askthe new member to help inthis effort by bringing a friendor family member. Before youknowit, yourclubcouldhavea fantastic diverse interestinggroup of Kiwanians dedicatedto “Serving The Children OfTheWorld”.
