THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE ATLANTA CHAPTER, INC., CHAPTER NUMBER 0788 DIRECTOR’S CORNER: Happy August Atlanta Chapter HOG! Here we are into the second half of 2015 but there’s still plenty of fun to be had before year end. Things like our chapter picnic and Christmas party are social events that just get better every year. Our calendar has plenty of rides to keep those Harleys well exercised. We’ve added 2 new Road Captains in the past month (Nan Sangster & Dee Pearson) and I can hardly wait to see what they come up with as new interesting rides. Keep in mind that if there is a destination or adventure that you would like to see added to our calendar, please let one of our officers or road captains know about it. August also brings to mind the oldest and largest motorcycle rally in the world! The STURGIS Motorcycle Rally! I’ve had the good fortune of attending this rally twice and highly recommend it if you ever get the chance. It has everything from beautiful scenery and radical motorcycles to great bands and lots of friendly bike enthusiasts. There are lots of other rallies much closer to us including our HOG State rallies that are also lots of fun (see the listing of rallies in this Hogwash); pick you one out and give it a try, you’re sure to have a great time! AUGUST MEETING NOTICE Our August member meeting will be a short information get together in the pavilion behind H-D Atlanta at 6:30 on the 20th. After the meeting there will be a short dinner ride to Wallace Barbeque in Austell for an evening of good food and socializing. PURCHASE INCENTIVE Just when you thought our HOG chapter relationship with Harley-Davidson of Atlanta couldn’t get any better…they raise the bar! Starting with our August member meeting, if you bring receipts from Harley-Davidson of Atlanta in the amount of $10 or more (dated since our previous month’s meeting) you will get 1 ticket for each qualifying receipt that will go into a special drawing at the meeting for a $25 gift card. PIG RIDE LEGEND ONE PIG: Non-curving terrain and a ride of short duration (50 miles round trip) TWO PIGS: A few gentle curve and be a bit longer (100 miles round trip) THREE PIGS: Long ride (200 miles round trip) with curving terrain and urban area traffic. FOUR PIGS: Lots of curves, some with “decreasing radius” turns and/or cover a major distance requiring a good deal of technical skill and stamina. Major traffic such as I75 can be part of this rating. FIVE PIGS: Most difficult category due to the severity and number of curves combined with a long ride. The Southern Highroads Trail, Suches, and Gatlinburg would fall into this category.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR’S CORNER Here we are beginning August already. Time really flies when we’re having fun. There have been lots of good rides and many more planned for August and into September. Mark your calendars for September 19th as that is our Chapter Picnic and 30th Anniversary party. We will be asking for volunteers to help with the Picnic when the time gets closer. Feel free to suggest rides to any of the road captains of if you have a particular destination, we can work together on the route. Also, visit the State Rally Facebook page (Georgia State Hog Rally) and "Like" it to keep up with the latest information (The State Rally is also asking for Volunteers, if you can volunteer, please follow the directions on the page). Lots of us have already booked our rooms, so if you haven't yet now's a good time to do so. You can find all the information you need here. MOTORCYCLE STAY COOL IN THE SUMMER HEAT We all enjoy living in the South for relatively mild winters, but that means we have to endure some brutal summer weather! These tips can help you keep cool while riding in the hot Georgia sun. 1. STAY COVERED. Ever notice how the locals on a tropical island are covered head to toe? Only sweaty tourists go out wearing shorts and a tank top in the blazing sun. Riding a bike through hot air is like standing in front of a blow dryer. Cover up, or you’ll end up well done. Don’t forget plenty of sunscreen for any exposed skin. 2. HYDRATE YOUR CLOTHING. Soak your clothes before you hit the road. And if you can’t water down everything, then pay special attention to your neck. A damp bandana can make a big difference. 3. VENT, VENT, VENT. Make controlled airflow your friend—especially through your helmet, gloves, and jacket. Look for clothing with vents you can zip open. Even better are nylon mesh jackets with removable cold-weather liners. 4. HYDRATE YOURSELF. If your bike runs low on fluids, it seizes up. So do you. Your brain will shrink to a walnut and start rattling around in your skull. Well, maybe not, but the poor decisions that follow will make it feel like it did! And this means water, Powerade, etc. As refreshing as that ice cold beer may be, alcohol will dehydrate you even more. 5. TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS. Ride with people who are so slow they are getting hit in the back by bugs? While you wait, find some shade, take off your helmet, lose the jacket, and drink some water.

6. IMPROVISE. During your next gas stop, fill your pockets with and packs with ice. It doesn’t take a lot, and you can usually get it free from the fountain drink machine. As the ice melts, the water evaporates and takes heat with it. Probably should stick with nylon jackets for this one.
