Questions for personal reflection based on

this Sunday’s Readings…

Believe me

that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.

–John 14:11-12

How can I serve Jesus more fully through the holy Catholic Church?

What can I do to contribute to Jesus’

mission more fully in my life?

Do I live my life as to boldly proclaim my faith in the truth of

Jesus?

Happy Mother’s Day to all Mothers, to all of the women who have shown us a mother’s love. May God bless you for saying yes to the gift of life. May those mothers who have gone from this life enjoy in the eternal peace of God’s embrace, with Mary our Mother

and Queen, St. Monica, St. Elizabeth Seton, and all the saints who in this life gave witness to Christian motherhood.

Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless all mothers, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example

of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen

ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE The coronavirus is affecting everyone in our parish, and in the world, but in many different ways. Of primary concern is the instant poverty felt by job loss: trying putting food on the table while waiting for unemployment to begin – or hopefully just brief struggles while waiting to return to work. Although we do not have unlimited resources, through the generosity of parishioners, there is help available – both through our parish, and perhaps through some agencies or programs which we can help connect you with. We are members of the Mystical Body of Christ – as St. Paul says: “As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ.…that the parts

may have the same concern for one another. If [one] part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy.” ~1 Corinthians 12:12,26

Please call the rectory to let us know if you, or if someone you know, may be in a bind during this difficult time.

NOVENA PRAYERS AND ROSARY On Tuesday, May 5, we began pausing to seek the intercession of Mary. We are livestreaming The Miraculous Medal Novena, and the Rosary each Tuesday at 6:30 PM. This will be posted to YouTube following the service. Parishioners who do not have computers are asked to pray in their homes each Tuesday as they are able. Let us turn to Mary our Mother, asking her to intercede for us to the Father of all mercies for a quick and safe end to this pandemic.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee.

MAY 2020 10 Sunday -Mother’s Day. Spend some time in prayer for your mother, living or deceased. Spend some extra time in prayer with Mary, our heavenly Mother, quietly contemplating the face of Christ. 12 Tuesday – Pastoral Council Meeting, 6:30 online 13 Wednesday - the Memorial of Our Lady of Fatima. Consider beginning a new habit of offering a daily Rosary for the needs of the world, and for your needs. STOP - Take an honest look at your daily schedule, both now during this quarantine, and in the future when things begin to look normal. Commit to making real adjustments to accommodate the 15 or 20 minutes it might take to meditate daily on the life of Jesus through this miraculous prayer. "Love the Madonna and pray the Rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. All graces given by God pass through the Blessed Mother." - St. Padre Pio

15 Friday -Go play in the dirt. Plant something in honor of St. Isidore, and say a prayer for all those who farm and work to provide our food, and for those migrant laborers who often harvest what

sustains us.

SACRAMENTAL NEWS Students are expected to continue their formation online through the parish web page listed below, so that as we move forward, we are prepared and not behind.

http://www.nativityduryea.org/parish-religious-ed- programs.html

CEMETERY NEWS AND NOTES Please be cautious as you make your way to Holy Rosary or St. Joseph’s Cemeteries. Some fall and winter graves have settled, leaving them sunken…in other areas rabbits and other critters have made their holes. Please use caution as our grounds crew begins the process of marking and filling depressions. Stay on the paths as much as you are able and please watch where you are going. We also ask that you be mindful of governmental requests as far as social distancing and masks, etc. as people may approach each other in the cemetery. It is an open space, but please be safe. As always – no dumping of any sort is allowed in our cemeteries. Thank You.

PASTORAL COUNCIL TO MEET Our Parish Pastoral Council will meet on Tuesday of this week, online.

3 Week of May 10-16, 2020 ~ The Fifth Week of Easter

PARTS OF THE DIOCESE OF SCRANTON ENTERING THE “YELLOW PHASE“

~ Not Us Yet ~ Bishop Bambera has shared the following

information with us regarding COVID-19 Guidance for those parishes of the four counties of our Diocese entering into the Yellow Phase.

We at Nativity are not in the Yellow Phase – both

Luzerne and Lackawanna counties have quite a ways to go….we are very much still in the Red Phase. This information is offered as we look to the not too near future. Our Status is and continues to be as it is written in the box to the lower left of this article.

Parishes in Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan and Tioga counties only may gradually resume public Masses no earlier than Monday, May 18. • Parishes in the Yellow Phase can be/remain open for private, individual prayer. • Guidelines are fluid and are subject to change with little notice depending on health/safety conditions or State recommendations. Public Masses can Gradually Resume in the Yellow Phase • The obligation to attend Sunday Mass throughout the Diocese remains suspended. • Livestreaming opportunities should continue. • Public Masses for those in the Yellow Areas will be limited to 25 people, including Priest, Deacon, etc. • Parishes will determine the system for deciding the rotation for parishioners who wish to come to Mass as restrictions are lifted. • As in the Red Phase, masks will be required of those attending. • Social distancing will be practiced, pews will be tied off, and Mass goers will sit according to what has been arranged. • Holy Communion to be distributed at the end of Mass, so that safety can be preserved. Sacraments can Resume in the Yellow Phase • Funeral Masses with a limit of 25 people can be held. • Confessions allowed with proper social distancing in place. • Weddings may resume in the Yellow Phase, with a maximum of 25 people attending • First Holy Communions and Confirmations can take place in the Yellow Phase as determined by parish.

For further information on all directives, in addition to proper safety and sanitation protocols that will need to be followed, visit www.dioceseofscranton.org.

While we here at Nativity Duryea do not know specifics such as timing for our transition into the Yellow Phase, or Sacramental planning or specific Mass procedures at this time, a review of the above information, as well as attentiveness to timelines issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are a good idea. Perhaps it can be as a light at the end of this long tunnel. It seems that our Nativity Parish Summer events – the Memorial Day (Public) Mass at the cemeteries, our Picnic, Vacation Bible School, etc., will be affected totally or in part. Please be sure look for future information as it becomes available.

Again, thank you all for your patience and support. May God bless us for our efforts to be strong in Faith in the midst of this time of woe!

This Bulletin has been e-mailed to all parishioners from our Parish Email Address: [email protected]. If you have not received it, check your spam or junk folder – they sometimes filter “.org” addresses. If you did not receive this bulletin through e-mail and would like to, please send us your updated address, subject line “Updated Email for Census” and we will take care of adding you to our list. Care for each other – even while away from each other…through Prayer.

CHURCH AND OFFICE HOURS The Rectory is closed to visitors. The mailbox is checked regularly, throughout the hours of 10:00am-6:00pm. Please do not hesitate to call or email the office with questions or concerns. At present, the Church remains open for private prayer. This is subject to often changing directives as the crisis continues. We kindly ask that any visitors use only the main aisle, sit in the open areas, and leave the kneeler down when you leave, so that we know where to sanitize at the end of each day. We ask and expect that as others may be present, all visitors follow the protocols set forth by government officials with regard to masks, gloves, etc. During this time, envelopes or other business may be dropped off safely to the Rectory Office Mail Box. We encourage our faithful, especially the young, to stay home and heed the advice of our leaders. Items may also be mailed, or business conducted online – such as inquiries into records, etc. We are only a phone call away.
