More refused to acknowledge Henry as head of the church, or his annulment from Catherine. This led to his arrest, imprisonment, a trumped-up court case and his eventual execution in the Tower of London. As he ascended the scaffold he made his famous final statement of conscience, proclaiming that he was “the king’s good servant, but God’s first.” Thomas More highlights some of the most important characteristics of a person’s conscience, not only through his martyrdom but also in the collection of his writings. Among his works is Utopia, about a fictional, idealistic island society. The work is regarded as part satire, part social commentary, part suggestion. Utopia is considered one of the great works of the late Renaissance and was widely read during the Enlightenment period. It remains frequently read by scholars today. Other works by More are his Dialogue of Comfort against Tribulation, A Dialogue Concerning Heresies, The Four Last Things, Dialogue on Conscience, and, of course his many letters preserved mainly by his daughter Margaret and his son-in- law, Will Roper. It is in his letters that we find Thomas More the person: husband, father, man of faith and deep prayer, loyal citizen yet person of conscience. In one of his letters to Margaret he writes: “The clearness of my conscience has made my heart hop for joy.” And in another letter, we read: “That my conscience stands together with my salvation, of that, thank God, I am sure. And so, dear daughter, I commend you to the Holy Trinity to guide you and comfort you and direct you with the Holy Spirit.” Thomas More and Margaret prayed the same prayer at exactly the same time each day during his imprisonment in the Tower of London before his martyrdom: O Lord, give us grace to firmly rest our love in you with little regard of this world, and so to flee sin and embrace virtue, that we may say with St Paul, “For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Send me, O Lord, the grace, knowing that I am far from perfection, to amend my life and continually to have an eye to my end, without grudge of death, which to them that die in God is the gate of a wealthy life, to which may God, in his infinite mercy, bring us all. St Thomas More

Sir Thomas More (1527) by Hans Holbein the Younger

THE GREATEST height that humanity has reached in its long evolutionary history is not the tallest mountain or the furthest planet; it

is not its greatest scientific invention or its most valuable work of art. The high point of humanity is written in the lives of people of conscience , most especially those who paid the ultimate sacrif ice for being true to their conscience. Conscience is that mysterious inner capacity of every human being to distinguish right from wrong and to choose to act accordingly.
