Mary Magdalene, by El Greco, 16th C.
RESTORING HER dignity as “apostle to the apostles”, Pope Francis has raised the liturgical commemoration of Mary
Magdalene from a memorial to the full status of a feast. She is an Easter disciple par excellence.
Mar y Magdalene was present at the crucif ixion of Jesus, standing with Mary his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas. She is a woman of courage; she is loyal and devoted; she shares a mother’s grief. How she herself must have been feeling at that moment is picked up later when John describes her at the tomb “weeping” (v. 11).
Emotion is often the “raw material” through which the Holy Spirit works in us. It is often the starting point of personal transformation. God meets us where we are.
Mary “stays outside, near the tomb, weeping.” Grief leaves one immobile. Then, “still weeping, she bent over and saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had been” (20:12). In the Bible, angels are messengers of God – they symbolise divine intervention. These angels represent the beginning of a revelation of divine mystery to Mary. Asking her why she is weeping, she gives what is by now her stock answer: someone has taken the body of Jesus away (see John 20:2 and 13).
Mary Magdalene, stuck in her f ixed way of interpreting things, is still thinking stolen corpse when she turns around and sees Jesus. This is the next stop on her faith journey, meeting the Risen Lord, though she does not know that yet.
There is not even a hint of resurrection faith as she thinks he is the gardener! She even suggests that he is responsible for the loss of the body and asks where it is so that she can go and remove it.
But then the Word utters a word; a word in the form of a name, in Aramaic/Hebrew, Mariam. Today’s gospel reminds us that the Good Shepherd knows his sheep “by name”. And the sheep know the sound of his voice. Mary is the f irst disciple to hear the voice of the Risen Shepherd who had laid down his life for his sheep.
She calls out “Rabbouni!” J e sus cau t ions Mar y, however, not to cling to him because he must still return to his Father – his Paschal mystery is not yet complete. Mary is called to a new intimacy with the Lord which transcends the human intimacy she had
known and which she wrongly assumed could now continue. Her new and true “intimacy” with the Lord is to be discovered by fulf illing the mission she receives from him. She becomes the medium of his message: “Go and f ind the brothers and tell them: I am ascending to my Father and your Father; to my God and your God.” (20:17) This is all Mary needs to cling to. The greatest intimacy with Jesus is precisely this, that his Father is now also her Father, his God is her God.
The f inal stop on Mary’s journey of faith is completed in the fulf ilment of that mission. She simply “went” as instructed, and thus became the “apostle to the apostles”.

Mon 13 May (Our Lady of Fatima)Acts 11:1-18; Psalm 42; John 10:1-10“When lovers are together, they spend hours and hours repeating the same thing: ‘I love you!’ What is missing in the people who think the rosary monotonous is Love. What is not done for love is worthless.” Sr Lucia
Sun 19 May 5TH SUNDAY OF EASTERActs 14:21-27; Psalm 145; John 13:31-35All have respect and dignity in the eyes of God, who sees much further and deeper into the hearts of people than we do. There is a latent goodness resid-ing in the hardest of hearts and the meanest of spirits.
Sat 18 May (St John I, PM)Acts 13:44-52; Psalm 98; John 14:7-14Saint John I was a martyr for the faith, imprisoned and starved to death by a heretical Germanic king during the sixth century. He was a friend of the renowned Christian philosopher Boethius, who died in a similar manner.
Fri 17 May Liturgy of the DayActs 13:26-33; Psalm 2; John 14:1-6Often in our spiritual journey we find ourselves lost. We don’t know where we are in relation to God – and we just keep struggling on. At this point, we need to swallow our pride, pull over, and ask for directions.
Thu 16 May Liturgy of the DayActs 13:13-25; Psalm 89; John 13:16-20When we find ourselves talking about “those people” or creating distance by being critical of everybody around us, it would be good to remember that God most likely finds them beautiful too.
Wed 15 May Liturgy of the DayActs 12:24–13:5; Psalm 67; John 12:44-50Do I really know that God’s commands are in truth the way to eternal life? And do I have that kind of Christ-like love that makes me eager to bring that Good News to others?
Tue 14 May ST MATTHIAS, AActs 1:15-17.20-26; Psalm 113; John 15:9-17Jesus attracted people wherever he went. Some continued to follow him, while others left when his teachings were difficult. Matthias was one who gladly accepted Jesus’ teach-ing and was willing to be a ‘witness to his resurrection'.
In this lively yet informative discuss ion of the seven gif ts of the Holy Spirit and how they f igure into the l i ves of Cathol ics today, Mitch F inley ser ves up a potpourri of down-to-earth commen t a r y, t houg h t-provoking ref lections, and concrete ev idence f rom the Catechism, Vatican II , and other sources. In his popular, reader-f r iendly style, he demonstrates how the seven gifts are the marks of God’s image in us; they are the ways by which we form ourselves into a new person, conformed to the will of God and full of justice and holiness.
