Year 12 2021 last Athletics'Carnival

The GIHS ATHLETICS carnival was a spectacular event and we couldn’t have asked for a better day in regards to the weather! A huge thank you to all involved and especially those who assisted on the day in getting the event prepped and organised, Mr Taylor and Mr Elliott who worked tirelessly days before and during the event to ensure its smooth and efficient operation. We actually couldn’t have run it without either of them.

Thank you to the council for their efforts in preparing King George Oval ready for both the track and field events. Thank you to Kay and Katrina who provided an amazing canteen on the day.

So that then brings me to the students of GIHS who turned up and participated in the day! Ultimately it is the students that determine the carnival’s success through their spirit and level of involvement! AND IT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!

The carnival events commenced Tuesday prior, with the 1500m track event! Lots of participation in this event with Summa Elliott and Kayden Elliott completing this event in what looked like a sprint rather than a steady run, both achieving great times! Lots of other good times also!

Athletics Carnival Thursday 27 May

2

Our first track event on the actual day was the Boys 800m which is usually a qui-et start to our carnival in years past however this year this event was flooded with entries! From this point on the day just got better and some fantastic athletic efforts and performances were witnessed across the precinct!

There are way too many highlights to mention in just one newsletter but to quick-ly touch on a couple ...

The 2021 House Tug-o-war was hotly contested with some of the longest and enduring bouts in recent history! WETHERSPOON boys taking out their event and the MORONEY girls winning convincingly. There are some great photos of this event already posted!

Javelin is always a popular event across all age groups and I think Kaleb Hopes

throw went 50m high as well as 50m long! Wow! Other special mentions include Lucas Tait and Tristian Constantini!

Discus was well participated in, which didn’t wind up until the very last minute of our carnival day! Some notable and winning throws were Lara Chard (16s) Mia Baker (14s) Charli Elliott (15s)! And the biggest throw of the day from Kaleb Hope at 44.7m (lucky we suggested a few people move their cars nearby).

Shot put- fine distances thrown by Toby Frendon (12s), Riley Grob (13s) Johan Van-Heedan (14s), Jack Causer (15s) , Lucas Tait (16s...biggest throw of the day) and Jye Williams (17s) - all winners of their age groups!

Shot Put- the girls strength lay with Kirsty Bicknell (12s) Cassidy Potter (13s) Mia Baker (14s) Charli Elliott (15s) Ashleigh Watson (16s) Hannah Dunn (17s) - winners of their age groups! Well done!

High jump special mentions include Emory Levy-Blair, Mitchell O’Brien, Nash Knox, Tristan Constantini, Angus Cameron, Kaleb Hope, Sophie Watt, Oscar Knox! The highest being Kaleb 1.68! And for the girls the highest height jumped was by Maisie 1.46m.

Of the 200m and 400m track events I can clearly remember Oscar Knox starting so well and also Kolby Martin finishing so well! Taylor Dillon in year 7 having a great go and being well supported by his peers was also a highlight! Special mention of the 15s boys 400m event include Rory Husband 1st, Greg Sieber 2nd and Kayden Elliott 3rd!

The stand outs in the 100m sprints were certainly Isabella Cox, Riley Grob, Brooke Klingner (fastest GIHS girl) and Nash Knox (fastest boy) ! Perhaps the stand out race in this block was the 15s girls with Maisie Eastwood and Charli Elliott neck and neck most of way and seeing judges going to the video replay to determine the winner!

3

The fresh and soft new sand of both jumping pits made for great events at both the triple and long jump! (Thank you Mr Taylor).

Results of our Glen Gift races were Cameron Winter and Hannah Dunn! A particularly close finish in the boys - take a look at this photo finish! Nash Knox having to run off scratch and then to be in the photo finish - it’s proof he’s our fastest lad in the school at the moment over 100m!

Spirit of the Games- Just so happens to be our Girls School Captain Hannah Dunn! Hannah choosing to give her last School athletics carnival her very best in every event! Very proud of you Hannah! What a great role model to the students of GIHS. The Leadership Award went to the boys House Captain of Wetherspoon- Jye Williams! He worked hard all day in trying to rally support and spirit amongst his house group while also being able to balance ‘having fun’ with his peers and then ‘competing seriously’ in a number of events! He was also the first to shake my hand at the end of the day in thanks for great day! A fine young man!

Of course there are many more great times and great results beyond all of the above! NOW TO OUR SPECIAL AWARDEES........ HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR AGE CHAMPIONS-

12s William Wright Summa Elliott and Ellie Knox

13s Riley Grob Isabella Cox

14s Greg Sieber Sophie Watt

15s Kolby Martin Maisie Eastwood

16s Nash Knox Brooke Klingner

17+ Cameron Winter and David Graham Hannah Dunn

Overall Boys Champion- Nash Knox

Overall Girls Champion- Maisie Eastwood

CARNIVAL CHAMPION- a clear winner on a total of 50 points - Maisie Eastwood

Thanks again for everyone’s contribution in what was a great carnival! Katie Rossington (Sports Coordinator GIHS)!

Principal’s Report

SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 2 WEEK 8 2021

Year 10 Work Experience

Year 10 students this week got the opportunity to take part in the Year 10 work experience placement. It is a great opportunity for students to gain experience in a field of their choice. We had a number of students in a variety of different fields, from primary school teaching, engineering, hair dressing, retail, preschool teaching and many other different fields.

Gum

Gum is not allowed at school. A student found to be chewing gum will be asked to chuck it in the bin, repeat offenders may be placed on a level for continued disobedience. Please remind your student to chew gum outside of school.

SRC Excursion

2021 SRC members are given the opportunity to attend a team building excursion. This year students will be going

to Coffs Harbour on the 17 June and will be attending the Tree Tops high ropes course and finishing off the day with fish and chips.

Uniform

Wearing the correct school uniform is an ongoing issue. We understand that during the winter months it is harder to insure your child is wearing the correct uniform, but it is still a requirement. Students have been given plenty of opportunities to wear the correct uniform. Students who are out of uniform 3 or more times in a term (unexplained) will be required to attend a recess or lunch time detention as they continually choose to not wear the correct uniform. Tracksuit pants are only to be worn on sport days and are not part of the uniform any other day. Hoodies are also not part of the uniform. If you are needing to wear an extra layer it still needs to comply with our school uniform policy. Wearing a school uniform

promotes school pride and is found to give students the best possibility to learn. If your child is needing to be out of uniform, it is requested that you call or provide a note to school explaining why your student is not wearing the correct uniform. Continued reasoning such as “they are out of uniform due to cold weather” will not be accepted even if a note is supplied. If you are requiring any assistance please contact the school and all enquiries will be kept confidential. Please refer to our uniform policy shown in this newsletter.

Secondary Schools Students Leader-ship Program

On Wednesday 9 June 2021, Glen Innes High School student leaders Kyara McIntyre and Cameron Winter were given the opportunity to develop their knowledge of our system of government and parliamentary proceedings, and the role of the Governor, as part of the annual Secondary Schools Student Leadership Program.

The day started at NSW Parliament House with an introduction to the NSW Parliament by Parliamentary Education staff and then an address by Members of Parliament. Kyara and Cameron met with the Member for Northern Tablelands, The Honourable Adam Marshall, MP and had lunch with him.

Kyara and Cameron then proceeded to NSW Government House for a guided tour, an address by the Governor, Her Excellency The Honourable Margaret Beazley AO QC, and afternoon tea.

On the 27 and 28 May, seven First Nation students attended a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics camp at Lake Keepit. The students participated in a range of activities that linked STEM to culture. Some of their favourite activities was the Smoking Ceremony, Weaving, learning Indigenous Dancing, making new friends and having the opportunity to connect with their culture. The students are to be congratulated on making the most out of a wonderful opportunity.

On Sunday 16 May we had eleven students from our GIHS dance team represent our school at the Inverell Dance Eisteddfod. All students must be congratulated on their performance and their professional attitude on stage and backstage. The group performed in five numbers, with three of them obtaining 1st place, one second and a Highly Commended. We had three students who performed in four trio performances and two who performed in one duo number. The trios were awarded two firsts and two seconds and the duo’s were awarded a second place. This was a fantastic effort from our students. A special thanks must go to their dance teacher Lindy Alt, who constantly provides our students with a hard work ethic and dedication. Lindy constantly gives so much to our students. I know our students and families are thankful to have her a part of our school. Thank you must also go to Mrs Burgis who assisted our students backstage to make sure they were ready for our very quick costume changes, also to Mrs Millar who assisted and gave up her Sunday to supervise our students.

HSIE NEWS

On the 31st April, the 9/10 Commerce class walked down to the local Glen Innes Police Station. Senior Constable Jamie Porter gave us a tour of the interview room, the video conferencing room, the docs and the holding cells. Jamie took us through the roles of Police officers in our community and procedures of what hap-pens when someone is arrested, including reading them their rights, photographing for identification, and fingerprinting. Some students also had the opportunity to have their fingerprints taken to see how the system works. Towards the end of our vis-it we went outside and looked and sat in the Police cars. It was an interesting expe-rience to try on the bullet proof vests, get handcuffed and use the retractable bat-ten. We would like to thank Senior Constable Jamie Porter for giving us the oppor-tunity for the hands on experience as part of our 'Law in Action' topic we are study-ing in Commerce. Student - Mia Baker

Katrina Fanning Cup

Wednesday 26 May

On Wednesday 26 May, we took an U14s team and 3 U16 players, combined with Tenterfield and Holy Trinity to Inverell today for the ‘Katrina Fanning Cup’ Girls Rugby League 9s competition. Both teams were winners of the day. The under 16s team were undefeated and the U14s won 3 out of 4 games. All girls played fantastic games and can be congratulated on their effort and great sportsmanship!! Well done girls! Coach- Lauren Clarke & Indi CB.

NW in Open Girls

Football

Maddison Crawford has recently spent 4 days away representing the NW in Open Girls Football at Bankstown. Maddison performed very well for her team at this higher level of competition, mixing and competing with the best. She is a very accomplished and diverse athlete who actually had to forego her position in the Open girls NW volleyball team as these two events were unfortunately on at the same time! We are very proud of this GIHS athlete! Well done Maddison!

Health News

Flu season and the latest Covid-19 Advice

It's that time of year, colds and flus are going around. Please see the Departments guidelines.

In accordance with advice from NSW HealthExternal link, parents and carers are

reminded NOT to send children to school if they are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms.

NSW Health has requested that schools encourage anyone who is unwell or has even mild flu-like symptoms, to

arrange to be tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the COVID-19 clinics External link.

Students and staff with flu-like symptoms need to be tested and provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test re-

sult and be symptom-free before being permitted to return to school.

Students who do not undertake a COVID-19 test will not be permitted to return to school for a 10-day period.

Additionally, they must be symptom-free for at least 3 days prior to returning to school.

Students who have seasonal allergic rhinitis or another condition that presents similarly to flu-like symptoms

are still required to get tested for COVID-19 and return a negative test result. Where their symptoms continue

beyond 10 days, students should provide documentation from their GP confirming their symptoms are typical

for their condition. If the student develops new or changed symptoms, they should get tested for COVID-19.

Find more information about COVID-19 symptoms External link.

COVID-19 testing for students with complex health or disability may be challenging. In these situations, schools

will ask the parent or carer to have their child assessed by their medical practitioner. Where a medical practi-

tioner determines that a COVID-19 test is not required, documentation must be provided to the school to con-

firm that the student does not have symptoms that warrant a COVID-19 test. The certificate must also indicate

that the student is able to return to school.

All schools will be vigilant when implementing infection control, physical distancing and personal hygiene proto-

cols to protect the health and safety of students and staff. Schools will promote the need to follow good hy-

giene practices :.
