Dear Parents and Caregivers, This Sunday marks a very special day in the life of Reddam – Open Day. From 10am – 2pm, the school is open for you and your families and friends to immerse yourselves into our world where you will see what Reddam life is all about. There will be showcases in the performing arts taking place around the school, an art exhibition, public speaking, sci-ence experiments and maths activities to mention a few. The students were overwhelmed by the speech from one survivor and left with an understanding of the im-portance of learning about history. Thank you to Mrs. Edana Chilchik for arranging the cross-curricular excursion which enriched the outcomes of English, History, and Jewish Studies.

On Wednesday night, the music department was given a special treat. Many students from the pri-mary, middle and high schools watched and heard Russian Passions by the Sydney Symphony Or-chestra. The night showcased diverse pieces with the audience demanding an encore from pianist Alexandre Gavrylyuk who played the 2nd Piano Concerto by Rachmaninoff. Peter Sculthorpe was present to see his “Sun Song” performed which was fantastic as he is widely regarded as the father of Australian composition. The night ended with Tchaikovsky’s dark and emotional “Francesca da Ri-mini”, inspired by Dante’s “Inferno”. Thank you to the music department for putting together this truly outstanding event. Best of luck to our sports teams this weekend and I look forward to seeing many of you at our Open Day on Sunday.

A huge congratulations to all students in the primary school for their fantastic efforts at the Reddam House Athletics Carnival yesterday. Every year the levels of participation improve and even more impressive were the number of records that tumbled throughout the day. Our senior students displayed excellent leadership lending a hand to our junior athletes and setting a fine example throughout the day. When Kindergarten and Year 1 arrived the carnival stepped up a gear with some little students achieving big results. Competing in a 100m, 200m, Tug of war contest and a 400m our infants gave their best for their respective houses. A big thankyou to our amazing teachers who worked in tough conditions with Olympic accuracy in their recording! Also thanks to all the parents who came and supported their kids on the day and showed impressive speed in the parents race. Well done to all students for another great day and finally the winner of the Reddam House Athletics Carnival is… Bronte! Age Champions:

This week the Kindy students (and their teachers) have been learning how to fly a kite. Some of the children brought in kites from home and on a rather windless day we did our best to keep the kites in the air. We noticed that diamond shape kites (like Lottie’s and Daphne’s) were the best on a calm day. Everyone loved Lucas Shakespeare’s squid kite. It had the most wonderful long tail and it was HUGE! The children learnt that in order to fly well a kite needed to be light, sturdy, have a tail and most importantly there needed to be at least a light breeze. Next week we are going to have a go at making our own kites.

Kindergarten spent a wonderful lesson being entertained by the Year 8 English students. Their brief was to present an interesting and exciting story to capture the attention of the kindergarten pupils and to present them with a valuable message. The year 8 class had been divided into groups and took it in turns to present their stories based on our topic of toys. Kindergarten thoroughly enjoyed all of them and felt very important when they were asked to vote and discuss which group had the best story and why! Thank you Ms Jo Karney and her Year 8 students, for making our English lessons enjoyable and lots of fun!

KINDERGARTEN

We have been discussing the importance of plants this week. How they provide us with so many things in life, air, food, materials etc. This inspired Yasha to bring in a strawberry plant and Mon-tanna to bring in an onion. We discussed how to look after them and help them grow well. We then made a list of how many recipes we could think of which used those food types. There were a lot! Manoli is fascinated by snakes. He presented a power point slide show in class about where snakes shelter. It was very informative indeed. He told us: snakes are part of the reptile family, they are cold blooded animals, pythons sometimes live in swampy areas and camouflage themselves to hide from predators and cobras have a smiley face marks on the back of their neck s pretending they are friendly!

Year 1E have been learning place value in Mathematics. Today the worked on trading discovering how units can become tens and tens become units. Using two dice and a chart with Units, Tens and Hundreds on them. They then throw the dice to begin their trading. Their goal was to reach 200, which, of course, they did very successfully. I was very impressed with the way they worked together. They were very anxious to reach a thousand but time ran out. This will follow on another time. Well done 1E. I’m very

Check out what fantastic and fun things we have been doing in Year 2 this past week! We have been looking a lot at the Olympics Games in the past few weeks, and with them all over, it is time to move onto our new unit, “Environments”. For our news task, we had to make up a new rainforest animal and describe it. Some of us drew pic-tures, some wrote descriptions and others actually made them from materials from home. Here are some of the amazing new creatures we created.

Year 3 have continued to give outstanding speeches this week. Jazmyn Bailey, Alex Levy and Ni-cole Geller delivered their speeches with confidence and clarity of voice. Year 3 have all learnt an enormous amount about the beautiful Heritage Sites and Environments of Australia listening to their peers. The children made use of outstanding props ranging from costumes to posters, photos and some outstanding power points. We look forward to hearing the speeches that these wonderful chil-dren will deliver by the time they are in Year 6. If their Year 3 speeches are anything to go by, they should be worthy of a parliamentary presentation.

This week, the Year 4 Extension English students have been trying their hands at using figurative lan-guage. We all know that good use of figurative language enhances narrative and expository writing but it’s not as easy as one would think getting your similes and metaphors perfect. The class did an outstanding job, however, showing that there are, perhaps, some future authors, journalists and speech writers in our midst. Ruby Bowen- James When I am sad, I am like a lonely infant. Jada Cooper When I am angry, I am like a dingo going in to attack. Cooper Child When I heard the news, I was a kid with everything from his wish list. Ela Greenfield-Jerez When I heard the news, I was a river of loneliness. Harrison Segerstrom He was a pylon of strength through all their trouble. Zara Rubinsztein Friendship is a perfect pencil – always helping you do your best. Charlie Roberts A friend is super glue. Sophie Veksner-Shaw Friendship is a golden thread that ties two people’s lives together. Jacob Amor When I am sad, I am like an ocean howling. Gabriel Gotsis Friendship is a sailing boat on a calm sea. Jasmine Zelden When I am angry, I am a thunderstorm with lots of lightning. Tia Hinds When I am tired, I am as grumpy as a fierce bear. Jaiden Fiarhead When I heard the news, I was a microphone.

YEAR 4

The Year 4 English class have been busy the last couple of weeks looking at the text types of Factual Descriptions and a form of poetry known as a Refrain. Working with descriptions has been very enjoyable for the students as they have used their own interests and hobbies as a starting block for their writing. A Refrain is not that dissimilar to a description in many ways. It uses ten lines to describe the subject of the poem to the reader. The main difference, the facts don’t have to be entirely true. In fact, imagi-nation is encouraged to lace these poems with humour and make them as entertaining as possible. As for the rules of writing a refrain, there is only one: The subject must be the first word of every sen-tence. Here are two examples from the class. JELLYFISH Jellyfish are not great pets. Jellyfish can have 2272 tentacles. Jellyfish love playing dead on the beach. Jellyfish aren’t brave because they have no guts. Jellyfish wish they had big muscles. Jellyfish hate pool water. Jellyfish think you’re the one who looks weird. Jellyfish have no brains, so they are quite silly. Jellyfish make excellent ballerinas. Jellyfish can come in boxes. By- Tigerlily Walker PENCILS Pencils are pointy and sharp like swords. Pencils can be used to make Wolverine claws. Pencils have no feet but can run off a desk. Pencils are closely related to pens. Pencils also want to be pens when they grow up. Pencils can do anything they want. Pencils are smarter than crayons. Pencils tell stories to paper. Pencils hate being sharpened. Pencils are scared of rubbers. By- Zac Sapsford

YEAR 4

Student's in all Years 5 and 6 English classes have been extremely busy finalising major pieces for their portfolios. Year Five have been busily finishing the decorations of their wonderful autobiograph-ical and haiku poetry, while finalising their work based around their set novel for study “Just a Dog” by Michael Gerard Bauer. Year 6 too have been preoccupied with their novel study, “Number the Stars.” However, every Year 6 class have now completed their interpretations of Banjo Paterson’s “The Man from Ironbark” and “A Dogs Mistake”; carefully deconstructing the text to write it in their own words while keeping Paterson’s famous rhyming scheme. Summer Walker and Sophie Visvis agreed that they loved the creativity surrounding the task. Here are the two girl’s interpretations of the opening stanza whereby the ‘Man from Ironbark’ arrived in Syd-ney, keen to get his beard shaved off to look somewhat normal. Summer wrote: It was the man from the country who arrived in Sydney town, He scampered over street and park, he scampered up and down, He explored here, he explored there, until he was about to drop, Until at last in sheer despair he saw the barber’s shop, “Oi! Shave my beard and moustache off, I’ll be a man of mark, “I’ll show the Sydney men right up! Yes me, from Ironbark!” Sophie’s was slightly different. It was the Man from Ironbark who struck the Sydney town, He dawdled past street and park, he dawdled up and down, He strolled over there, he strolled everywhere, till he was about to drop, Until at last in sheer despair he found a barber’s shop, “Mate! Shave my beard and sideburns off, I’ll show who’s flash in this park! I’ll go and show Sydney who’s in town” murmured the Man from Ironbark.

On Thursday 16 August, the year 4 - 6 French students had the opportunity to enjoy an exciting and fun-filled French play called ‘Concert Pop’. Using audio-visuals and live music, Pierre Alain took the students on a journey through the back-grounds of some of France’s coolest and most famous French singers, from Serge Gainsbourg to the recent winner of French idol Julien Doré. The show also featured the most popular Theatre LOTE songs, including The Revolution Rap and songs from L’Amour est bizarre ! Here is what some of the students had to say about Concert Pop: ‘In my opinion, the French play was fantastic. We learnt a lot about French history. I found the play re-ally fun because I got to sing and help out with the show’. Carter Nicklin ‘I thought the play was good and liked how the singing got everyone involved. It was fun as well as educational’. Trent Mayer ‘The French play “Concert Pop” was very enjoyable. It was inclusive which was even better. I loved all the songs especially “Revolution Rap”. It was extremely entertaining’. Rachael Rozengurt

Year 6 students attended an excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum this week. This excursion was organised to support current novel studies in English, as well as the research undertaken by some Year 6 students in Jewish Studies.

The children watched a short movie about the Holocaust and that time in history. Included in their visit to the museum was a moving recount from a child holocaust survivor. Our chil-dren asked insightful, sensitive questions and I was very proud of their behaviour. They were respect-ful of the survivors, the museum and of each other.

We were then divided up into smaller groups and with our Teachers Ms Nafronowicz, Ms Yeh and Mrs Chilchilk and the volunteer museum guides. The children were taken through the museum and shown both photos and artefacts.

The excursion was a moving one and invaluable experience for all our students.

On Monday 20th August the Contemporary Vocal Ensemble attended the Sydney Eisteddfod. Partici-pating amongst some tough competition which included a number of specialist singing schools and larger independent schools, Reddam House did well and received a pleasing report and a score of 81%. Congratulations go to: Francesca Stokes, Chelsea Stokes, Mikki Liling, Natalie Binetter, Gabriel-le Glazer, Josh Rechnitzer, Lachlan Falconer and Gabriella Kashansky. Thanks goes to Priscilla Gauci for her preparation of these students for this event. The Year 12 Music Showing was held on Tuesday 21st August in the Adelaide Hall. This performance of the HSC students’ practical works marked the opportunity to present their programme to parents, friends and staff for the final time. It was a very pleasing recital and all three students performed at a high standard. It only remains for the Music Department to wish Caila Brandt, Zara Luckey and Victo-ria Zerbst all the best in final preparations for the external practical exam to be held on 3rd September 2012.

I was delighted to be invited to read Zac the Yak with Books on his Back to our Year 1 students this week. This delightfully illustrated book with rhyming text is published by Room to Read. Room to Read is a non profit organisation that buys books for schools in need in Nepal, Cambodia and Africa. Zac the Yak tells a story of working together as a global community to bring books to these schools. Zac has to deliver the books by taking a challenging and sometimes treacherous journey to the Nepa-lese village of Bahundanda located high in the mountains. The children of Year 1 were thoroughly entertained and engaged in this story and were particularly surprised to discover that there are some schools in the world, without books! Our Year 1s love to read and always enjoy a good story during library visits. So they felt quite sad to realise that some children did not have the same access to stories that we have here at Reddam. After reading the story and talking about Nepal, we finished off with some terrific tongue-twisters from the Zac the Yak site. Haines Sayer started us off with perfection by saying “Zak's stacked back needs an ice pack.” Well done Haines! Everyone then joined in and we had a few giggles trying to get our tongues around all of them. They’re a bit tricky- try them yourselves; · Zak is a yak with a super strong back. · The stacked yak walked west. · Bring books to beautiful Bahundanda. · Pack and stack the yak, then eat a snack. · Zak yearns, yak learns. · The backlash from the yak dash was a gnarly gash from the yak crash. · A whack, a smack, and a crack caused the crazy yak to quack! If you are interested in learning more Room to Read and the good work they do, the website is Room to Read …and for learning games with Zac the Yak, go to Zac the Yak.
