Opportunities to Grow and ExcelThe upper school athletics program (grades 7-9) offers options for athletes at all levels ofskill and experience. Each term, every student chooses a sport, and the weekday after-noon hours from approximately 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. are devoted to practices and games.

With 36 interscholastic teams and 10 intramural programs in 20 different sports, Fay’sprogram is designed to give all students, from beginners to mavens, the opportunity tocompete at an appropriate level that offers the right combination of challenge, success, and fun. Students may select sports with which they already have experience, and theyare also encouraged to try something different and build new skills.

The Joy of CompetitionFay athletes play (and win!) against a competitive group of peer schools, which includesFenn School, The Fessenden School, Shore Country Day School, The Rivers School, and Dana Hall School, among others. Teams play one or two games each week, andweekend tournaments are always a season highlight for our players. Fay teams enjoy respectful rivalries with other schools and look forward to games when they can showtheir school spirit while striving for victory or a personal best.

Many Fay alumni go on to compete at an elite level at secondary schools and colleges, including Phillips Academy Andover, Phillips Exeter Academy, Deerfield Academy,Noble and Greenough School, Amherst College, and Harvard University.

Athletics for Pre-K through Grade 4Physical education classes in Pre-Kindergarten through grade four encourage a lifelongappreciation for physical fitness, health, and sport. In the earliest grades, students participate in warm-ups, games, and activities to build cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and motor skills. In grades three and four, students learnmore about the rules and strategies of specific sports in preparation for team sports infifth and sixth grade.

5/6 AthleticsFay’s fifth and sixth graders benefit from an athletics program that is tailored to their developmental needs. The program features three components: instruction, intramuralgames, and interscholastic competition. As in the Upper School, students choose a sporteach term, and the bulk of each week’s practices focus on instruction and intramuralplay. Through the season there is interscholastic competition once every week or twoagainst well-matched opponents from peer schools. With permission, exceptional sixthgrade athletes may try out for Fay’s varsity teams.

“The 5/6 athletics program is phenomenal because it allows the students to be themselves. You can tap intotheir energy and excitement and build their skills so theycan get to the next level.”

—Nell Reynolds P’15,’17,’19 and 5/6 field hockey coach

Honoring the GameFay’s coaching staff is composed of Fay faculty and staff as well as outside specialists. All of our coaches are committed to meeting the needs, interests, and abilities of the athletes— not just in terms of teaching rules, strategy, and sport-specific skills, but alsoto build self-confidence, teamwork, leadership skills, and a love of the game.

Fay has partnered with Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), a non-profit organizationwhose mission is to “transform youth sports so sports can transform youth.” Togetherwith PCA, Fay supports the “double-goal” coaching model—one that focuses on learning life lessons as well as winning. To this end, Fay offers parent workshops, training for teachers and coaches, and leadership workshops for student-athletes thatfocus on creating a positive, character-building youth sports environment.

FacilitiesFay’s athletes have access to a range of state-of-the-art facilities. Our 30-acre main campus features six full-size athletic fields, four basketball courts, a cross-country course, a fitness center, and an indoor rock climbing wall. Just 1.5 miles north of ourmain campus, our 36-acre athletic campus offers five full-size athletic fields, a baseballdiamond, and three batting cages.
