FAFSAFAFSA is an acronym for Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

The FAFSA is the financial aid application.

There is no fee to file a FAFSA. It is free.

What happens?

after you submit your FAFSAYou will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the federal government by mail or by e-mail.

FAFSA processing center sends your FAFSA results to ASU with your Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

ASU calculates your financial need. Cost of attendance minus family contribution = need.

ASU creates an award package for you and sends you an e-mail explaining how to accept or decline the offered aid.

Let’s look at the FAFSA worksheet together.

This is not the actual FAFSA. It is a worksheet for gathering information you will need for the FAFSA.

Then, you can easily use the worksheet as a reference when filling out the actual FAFSA.

These sections are for information about the student who is applying for financial aid.

This is the top of SECTION 1 (page 2 of the worksheet).

On the actual FAFSA, there is a place to add up to ten colleges which you would like to receive your FAFSA information.

It is okay to add just ASU, if you like.

There is no place to add the colleges on this worksheet.

The ASU school code is 001081.




This is the first place where you need to add information to SECTION 1.

On the first line, write your last name, first name and your Social Security Number (SNN).

In the box below, indicate your citizenship status. Check ONE box.

In the next box, indicate your marital status. Check ONE box.




More information in SECTION 1:

In the box called Student Aid Eligibility Drug Convictions, check ALLboxes that are correct.

In the box about your parents’ education, check ONE box for your father and ONE box for your mother.




SECTION 2 at the bottom of this page is about your dependency status.

Check boxes for ALL statements which describe you correctly.

If you check any of these boxes, you will not have to provide the parent information on the next page.

The third page in SECTION 3.

This section is for information about your parents.

You are required to complete this section if you checked any of the boxes in the student dependence section on the previous page.






Who is considered a “parent” in regard to filling out the FAFSA?

A biological or adoptive parent.

Grandparents, foster parents, legal guardians, older siblings, and uncles or aunts are not considered parents on this form unless they have legally adopted you.

In case of divorce or separation, give information about the parent you lived with most in the last 12 months. If you spent equal time with each parent, give information about the parent who provided the most financial support during the last 12 months or during the most recent year you received support.

If your divorced or widowed parent has remarried, also provide information about your stepparent.




You will need the following information about your father:

Father’s/stepfather’s Social Security Number (SNN)

Father’s/stepfather’s name

Father’s/stepfather’s date of birth

Also check the box if your father/stepfather is a dislocated worker.*

You will also need the same information for your mother/stepmother.

* A dislocated worker is one who receives unemployment benefits due to being laid off or losing a job or who has been laid off or received a notice of being laid off or who was self-employed but is now unemployed due to economic conditions or natural disaster or who is a displaced homemaker, a person who previously provided unpaid services to the family but who is no longer supported by the spouse or who is having trouble finding or upgrading employment.




Check ONE box to answer the question: Did your parents file or will they file a 2009 income tax return? The choices are:

My parents have already completed a tax return.

My parents will file, but have not yet completed a tax return.

My parents do not plan to file an income tax return.

Then fill in the box on the right with the amount of your parents’ adjusted gross income for 2009, unless your parents did not file taxes.

Adjusted gross income can be found on the IRS Form:1040 – line 37, 1040A – line 21 or 040EZ – line 4




This part of the page about parents asks about earnings:

In the top box on the right, enter the amount your father/stepfather earned in 2009.

In the bottom box on the right, enter the amount your mother/stepmother earned in 2009.




This question is about aid resources and program benefits received by your parents’ household. Check ALL boxes which apply to your parents’ household in 2008 or 2009:

The forth page is SECTION 4.

This section has more information about the student who is applying for financial aid.

This section has questions about income, taxes and other information related to finances and family.





The first question on SECTION 4 is about your or your family’s income tax return. Check ONE box.

You will need your tax returns and/or W-2 forms to complete the FAFSA.

The next question is about your (and spouse’s) adjusted gross income for 2009. Fill in the blank on the right or skip this information, if your or your spouse did not file taxes for 2009.




The next questions in SECTION 4 are about earnings.

Complete this question even if you did not file a tax return.

In the box on the right, indicate how much you earned from working during 2009.

Then, check the box if you are a dislocated worker.

Also, in the box on the right, indicate how much your spouse earned from working in 2009.

Then, check the box if your spouse is a dislocated worker.




In the next box, check ALL boxes that accurately describe resources received by anyone in your household in 2008 or 2009.

Note that Food Stamps and TANF may have a different name in your state. Call 1-800-4-FED-AID to ask about the name of the food stamp program in your state.




We’re still on page 4 in SECTION 4.

This is the last question in the FAFSA on the Web worksheet.
