What is the FAFSA?

FAFSAFAFSA is an acronym for Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

The FAFSA is the financial aid application.

There is no fee to file a FAFSA. It is free.

What happens?

after you submit your FAFSAYou will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the federal government by mail or by e-mail.

FAFSA processing center sends your FAFSA results to ASU with your Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

ASU calculates your financial need. Cost of attendance minus family contribution = need.

ASU creates an award package for you and sends you an e-mail explaining how to accept or decline the offered aid.

Who is considered a “parent” in regard to filling out the FAFSA?

A biological or adoptive parent.

Grandparents, foster parents, legal guardians, older siblings, and uncles or aunts are not considered parents on this form unless they have legally adopted you.

In case of divorce or separation, give information about the parent you lived with most in the last 12 months. If you spent equal time with each parent, give information about the parent who provided the most financial support during the last 12 months or during the most recent year you received support.

If your divorced or widowed parent has remarried, also provide information about your stepparent.

* A dislocated worker is one who receives unemployment benefits due to being laid off or losing a job or who has been laid off or received a notice of being laid off or who was self-employed but is now unemployed due to economic conditions or natural disaster or who is a displaced homemaker, a person who previously provided unpaid services to the family but who is no longer supported by the spouse or who is having trouble finding or upgrading employment.
