I. Purpose of the academic tour “Ruta Académica a Arizona”

Dear Professor, The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education of the Tecnológico de Monterrey has designed this academic tour for you to visit a very innovative higher education institution in the U.S. with the purpose of fostering your global vision, specifically with regard to your teaching practice in the threshold of the implementation of our new educational model. Thru this experience, you will be able to learn from your peers at Arizona State University the educational innovations they are implementing in their teaching-learning process, conducting research, and students’ engagement and retention. These innovations have many parallel educational characteristics with our Tec21 model. We are certain that many ideas will emerge and that you will make the most of this visit. Do not hesitate to ask all the questions that come to your mind, relate the ideas to what you could incorporate into your teaching practice, what could be implemented as part of the semana i and semester i projects; enlarge your academic network and think in new ways both our institutions can collaborate and how we can nurture student and faculty mobility. We are grateful to the wonderful people at Arizona State University who are willing to set aside some of their time in order to share with us the challenges they have faced in implementing these educational innovations and also their achievements. We want to give you a warm welcome to this academic experience. The team at International Affairs Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education

II. A brief introduction to Arizona State University (ASU)

“Learn to Thrive” Founded in 1885, Arizona State University (commonly referred to as ASU or Arizona State) is a public metropolitan research university located on five campuses across the Phoenix, Arizona, metropolitan area: Tempe, Downtown, Polytechnic, West and Thunderbird. (https://www.asu.edu/) ASU is the largest public university by enrollment in the U.S. It has approximately 91,322 students enrolled in the year 2015 including 74,139 undergraduate and 17,183 graduate students. ASU's charter, approved by the board of regents in 2014, is based on the "New American University" model created by ASU President Michael Crow. It defines ASU as "a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but rather by whom it includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves." ASU is classified as a research university with very high research activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Since 2005 ASU has been ranked among the top research universities, public and private, in the U.S. based on research output, innovation, development, research expenditures, number of awarded patents and awarded research grant proposals. The 2016 university ratings by U.S. News & World Report rank ASU No. 1 among the Most Innovative Schools in the U.S. (national universities) for making the most innovative improvements in terms of curriculum, faculty, students, campus life, technology or facilities. CHANDLER INNOVATION CENTER ASU's Chandler Innovation Center (http://osha.asu.edu/Chandler-Innovation-Center) was opened at the beginning of 2014 and hosts three state-of-the-art classrooms, a computer lab and a hands-on teaching lab. The ASU Chandler Innovation Center is an engineering and technology-based education and research hub located in downtown Chandler. ASU's partner, The Tech Shop (http://www.techshop.ws/ts_chandler.html), is located in the building and features state of the art "Maker" facilities including full wood working, metals, plastics and textile shops. This gives ASU students and Chandler area makers, entrepreneurs and innovators access to a wide range of machinery, tools, software and a vibrant community. GLOBAL RESOLVE Bridging the global divide with sustainable and collaborative solutions. GlobalResolve has three main objectives: • Design solutions to help relieve the effects of poverty in the developing world. • Create business ventures from the solutions to provide sustainable economic development to underserved communities. • Expose students to life-changing experiences that empower them to make an impact in the world. • https://engineering.asu.edu/global-resolve/ ASU SKYSONG SkySong (https://skysong.asu.edu/), the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center, is home to a global business community that links technology, research, education and entrepreneurship to position ASU and Greater Phoenix as global leaders in the knowledge economy. Organized around a central plaza with a signature shade structure, SkySong is a 1.2 million-square-foot mixed-use development located on a 42-acre campus in Scottsdale. A joint venture among ASU, the ASU Foundation, the City of Scottsdale and the Plaza Companies, SkySong is three miles from ASU’s research-intensive Tempe campus and 15 minutes from Sky Harbor International Airport.

INNOVATIONSPACE InnovationSpace (https://innovationspace.asu.edu/) is an entrepreneurial joint venture among the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. The goal of our transdisciplinary education and research lab is to teach students how to develop products that create market value while serving real societal needs and minimizing impacts on the environment. Put simply, we seek to create products that are progressive, possible and profitable. At the same time, they must have a meaningful impact on the daily lives of ordinary people. InnovationSpace utilizes two fundamental strategies for creating sustainable innovation: a model of new product development known as Integrated Innovation and the emerging field of biomimicry. THE DECISION THEATER Prototypes for making decisions in the face of uncertainty. The Decision Theater Network (https://dt.asu.edu/) actively engages researchers and leaders to visualize solutions to complex problems. The Network provides the latest expertise in collaborative, computing and display technologies for data visualization, modeling, and simulation. The Network addresses cross-disciplinary local, national and international issues by drawing on Arizona State University’s diverse academic and research capabilities. ProMod: The program combines instruction in general education and students’ focused areas of study while they tackle real life problems. Faculty are researching whether the students are more likely to complete their degrees than students who take classes delivered in the traditional way. ProMod Tackle the challenges of today and tomorrow. ProMod is an innovative approach to a traditional college education. Participating students work closely with faculty and fellow peers by engaging and developing unique projects that apply their knowledge to real-world situations. Through this program, students are offered an opportunity to earn a variety of credits that satisfy their general studies and degree requirements by taking a single ProMod project.

Adaptive Learning Courses

Students might not need to take the whole course, thru the Adaptive Learning Labs they demonstrate what they already know and they work on what they do not know. ASU Adaptive Learning Labs are computer labs across the four campuses that are designated for students enrolled in Math 142, Chemistry 101 or Economics 212 to take their proctored exams. Free tutoring is available for these courses and many more.

IX. Things to do in Phoenix and at ASU RESTAURANTS A restaurant that is similar to Pinnacle Peak in Tucson is - Rustler’s Rooste http://www.rustlersrooste.com/ Mill Avenue is at walking distance from ASU. You can find many places to eat here. Here is a link of all of the restaurants on Mill. http://www.downtowntempe.com/explore/dining House of Tricks is really good but a bit pricey for dinner (it’s not right on mill), la Bocca Urban Pizzeria is good. Tempe Market place is a mall that is 10 minutes away from your hotel and you can find many places to eat. http://www.tempemarketplace.com/dine/dining-guide/ I recommend Lucille’s Smokehouse BBQ it’s good http://lucillesbbq.com/ THINGS TO DO IN PHOENIX During your visit there aren’t any pro baseball or pro basketball games but you can go downtown and walk around the stadiums. Chase Field 401 E Jefferson St (baseball stadium) and the Talking Stick Resort Arena 201 E. Jefferson St (basketball stadium) are next to each other. Next to these stadiums you will find several garages and parking lots where you can park. The stadiums are located in downtown Phoenix and here you can find many places to eat and it is nice to walk around. Here is a link to Tripadvisor’s list of top attractions in Phoenix. I have been to the Desert Botanical Garden and really liked it. The stadiums mentioned above are also on this list and obviously tours to the Grand Canyon and all that, but those tours will probably take more time. This link also has several museums that might be of interest to you and your group.
