20. New Business

a. Flange Concerns

• Chris Heitman proposed to the AWHEM group that 17D is lacking in regard to: 15K Design, 13-5/8” maximum size, no rounding rules, and other discrepancies.

• Motion was made and carried that AWHEM would form a task group to address these discrepancies. The results can be compiled into a publishable report. The report will assist in approaching the API as to needed modifications to 17D.

• The task group will be chaired by Chris Heitman. • Chris will be in contact with various manufacturers to obtain input or participation. • Anyone wishing to join this effort should contact Chris Heitmnan.

b. Discussion: Monogramming and intermediate temperature and pressures other than the ranges listed in the API specifications. No AWHEM action was taken. c. Lubrication of ring gaskets / Bolts

• To prevent galling of ring gaskets (due to material SS 316 or Inconel 625) it is common practice among the industry to apply an inhibiting lubricant.

• The API has published friction factors which some AWHEM members find dubious. • Eric Wehner agreed to chair an AWHEM task group to produce a document/resolution

stating the problem and AWHEM’s position. This document/resolution is to be presented to AWHEM.

d. Discussion: Using Teflon tape on threads as sealant

• Among the attendees, no one was aware of an industry accepted prescriptive standard for the use of Teflon tape as a sealant on threads.

• No AWHEM action was taken.

21. Awards/ Nominating Committee • The outgoing president, Jean Brunjes, was awarded a plaque for his dedicated service by

past president, David Zollo. • Officers for the coming year were approved by the AWHEM body:

President: Roy Benefield Vice President: Bill White Secretary: Tom Goin

21. Welcome of Scholarship Recipient and U of H Faculty

• Ashley George gave an endorsement and distributed a copy of the book, Why Give a hundred percent, I JUST WORK HERE, to each attending AWHEM member. A brief outline of the book is included here.

Attachment 15. • Ashley George then introduced and welcomed the current AWHEM scholarship recipient,

Mr.Salah Ahmad, from the University of Houston. Mr. Ahmad was accompanied by Lisa Burns, U of H Relations and Dr. Heidar Malki, U of H Chair, Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Technology.

• Mr. Ahmad gave a gracious thank you. He then explained how the scholarship had aided him. He also shared some of his ambitious plan to found a school in his native country in Africa. .

AWHEM President’s Report

December 11, 2012

Welcome to the December meeting of AWHEM.

Today we will have an opportunity to meet the 2012-2013 U of H College of Technology

AWHEM scholarship award recipient. His name is Salah Ahmad. He will join us along

with Lisa Burns and Dr. Heidar Malki from the College of Technology.

This year AWHEM has remained active in the area of industry standards and

specification support. We released TR1201 earlier this year, a technical report on target

flanges. A task group is developing a 4-1/16” valve removal plug for 20000 psi to

complete the HPVR series in API 6A. An eventual goal, if allowed by SC6, is to permit

use of the HPVRs in low pressure outlets. Later in the year we started a task group

working on reviewing the way API licenses facilities. That work is still ongoing.

Membership through the year has remained fairly constant. We have added a couple of

members, and a couple have been absorbed into other existing members. Attendance

at meetings has remained good throughout the year.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the nominating committee for offering me the

opportunity to support AWHEM as one of the officers for the past 3 years. I want to also

thank the membership for the support you have given me and the other officers for

these 3 years.

Thank you.

Jean Brunjes

Report to: AWHEM, December 11, 2012 Subject: API Sub Committee 19 Activities SC 19 has not met since my last reporting of activities to AWHEM September 11, 2013. Therefore, this report is relatively limited. SC19 is scheduled to meet during the 2013 Exploration & Production Meeting in New Orleans on Tuesday, January 21, 2013. I am including a copy of the proposed agenda for that meeting. API 11D1 Packers and Bridge Plugs As reported to AWHEM in September, an R3 form was submitted to API to revise this standard. This group, under the chair of Rob Hilts, has met at least twice primarily to establish objectives. Notes for these meetings are posted on the API “my committees” website. A few points of consideration:

• It was decided that general service packers fall under the auspices of this group. However, service packers may not need the same or complete qualification requirements as outlined in 11D1. The TG is working on a disclaimer for appropriate requirements.

• Special testing for unsupported casing has been discussed. • Potentially inclusion of CFR information • Under the guidance of PER15K, a normative annex for HPHT will be included. • George Givens, Weatherford, has agreed to chair the TG for establishment of a specification for

Liner Hangers. This TG is investigating/considering should 11D1 include this activity. Gaslift Activities-- Recommended Practices for Design of Continuous Flow Gas-lift Installations Using Injection Pressure Operated Valves The TG working on the conversion of 11V6 to a release of 19G6 is active. A copy of the latest version of the potential document (along with comments submitted by Tom Nations on 12/9/2013) can be found at: http://mycommittees.api.org/standards/ecs/sc19/default/aspx shared documents 19G6 Rewrite – version 5 Respectfully Submitted, B. 4 Review of Minutes of the Previous Meeting a) Approval of previous Minutes

Item 4 - APOS Standards. No further progress had been achieved on obtaining information via FMC's contacts. Ian Hamilton has had more success through Aker channels and at a meeting with Statoil, a statement had been made that these are guidelines, not specifications. It was agreed that this was not an ideal situation and that Statoil should be asked through this route to issue some formal guidance. ElectroMagnetic Directive. This item is now closed as the directive's scope with regard to wellhead equipment is limited to preventing interference with wired or wireless communications. Treasurer's Report. As advised at the previous meeting, the chairman's company should not pay for the year their representative is in the chair. However, as Master Flo have already paid for this year, no invoice for membership fees is to be issued to Masterflo for 2013 to amend this oversight. Technip have not yet paid for their plaque. Chairman's Correspondence. As previously discussed and agreed, the P.O. Box will now be allowed to lapse as no mail is being directed to the mailbox. The US Committee is to be requested to set up an e-mail facility via the website to re-direct / copy North Sea Committee mail to the Chairman, Secretary, & Treasurer. Action: Martin Phillips XMAS Tree Bore Spacing. As discussed at the previous meeting, the new ISO release of ISO 13628-7 (API 17G) contained revised requirements for the spacing of bores within a Tree block. Clarification on the process for arriving at the revisions to the spacing requirement remains to be sought from ISO regarding the driver for this change. Action: R Preston / D Thompson to write to ISO committee to request details of change driver and summary of considerations. AWHEM (US) Minutes. Latest minutes have not yet been received. Terminology:- Simon Vaughan had previously requested clarification of some of

Minutes of August 2012 Quarterly Meeting the terminology used in a previous AWHEM (US) minute, but no clarification has yet been presented to the AWHEM (North Sea) committee. Action:- Marie Mitchell / D Thompson to contact AWHEM (US) & Simon Vaughan for clarification Documents for Ballot:- As the process of requesting US based representatives to notify North Sea Committee Members of documents for ballot was proving inconsistent, at best, Jean Brunjes to be approached to arrange an automatic notification system. Action R Preston / D Thompson New Member - X-Cel Superturn. This prospective member had been previously assessed and did not meet the membership requirements of the Association, particularly in regard to product design. However, as they had again applied to join, Marie Mitchell was tasked to contact X-Cel to establish the value that they felt they would bring to the Association. It was intended to vote on their membership at the August meeting, subject to their response being received. However, no response had been received by the date of the meeting. It was agreed to wait until the November meeting to vote, but that if no response was received from X-Cel, their membership application would not be successful. ATEX:- It was noted that although the ATEX document referred to all safety valves, it was also written with intent for equipment intended to be operating in an environment where potentially explosive gases, vapours and powders may be present and mix with oxygen. By definition, the valves on operating wellhead equipment are subsea, therefore no gases, vapours or powders can be present and the free oxygen content is limited. Further, whilst the spring chamber raised the greatest concern regarding potential sparks in the event of failure, these are generally liquid filled and pressure balanced, further eliminating risk. Whilst such equipment is on deck, i.e. potentially within an explosive atmosphere, the equipment is not normally operating, except during test, for which a local permit to work system can be instituted thereby reducing any risk. It was agreed that the document, as worded, did not apply. API / Hardness Testing. The previous meetings had discussed a requirement by a Client to hardness test valves at bonnets, as these were considered by them as outlet connections. Reference to API standards has shown that valve bonnets are not considered as outlet connections and are not therefore subject to hardness test requirements Any such requirement by a Client is to be corrected in order to avoid future confusion. API 5L Hardness testing:- As a result of the above, API 5L test requirements were queried. Pat Gallagher (FMC) agreed to provide feedback via Tony Bradford. AOB:- The Statoil J.I.P. on long term seal performance is expected to pull one or more trees for inspection of the seals . Alan Bickley is expecting to receive the

Chapter 1:   Something you need to know

In order to progress in life, one has to improve every day in an endless process.  (An aging Samurai)

There is no perfect job and there is no perfect marriage — you have to work at both of them or both will come to an end.  Studies show that only 10% of people really like their job, and the nature of employment continues to change along with the world, leading to a world with more temporary short‐term positions.  You need to do your best at each job in order to create strong references, and make each job count.

What to do differently: Think about your career much more than your job.

Chapter 2: My attitude is not my fault

People find fault like there is a reward for it. (Zig Ziglar)

A bad attitude will suck you in like a vacuum if you let it. Attitude is a choice: don’t let your company or your environment make your attitude for you — make it yourself.  The world has always had problems and will continue to do so, but an optimistic attitude will make a positive difference by making you invaluable, no matter where you are, and opening doors of opportunity for you.  Recognize what you’re really good at and position yourself within the organization with a positive attitude.

What to do differently: Identify your #1 strength and make sure you are using it with a positive attitude.

Chapter 3: Oh no, not another day

I asked the President of a new client, “How many people work here?” He said, “About half.”  (J. Graham)

Remember the Law of Attraction: the signals we send out most often determine what comes back to us.  Jobs generally have a life‐cycle of Excitement, Contribution, Frustration, and Disengagement.  Starting over with a new job will only put you through this cycle again if you do not change your perception of it.  Statistics show that many adults are on their second marriage; these people are applying what they learned the first time around and have more success in their second marriage.   In the same way, you can create a new pattern with your new job rather than repeating the mistakes of the previous cycle.

Page 50: ASSOCIATION OF WELL HEAD EQUIPMENT …awhem.org/PDFs/12-11-2012 Approved Minutes with Attachments.pdf · • David Zollo reported on activities of AWHEM TG to formulate an approach

What to do differently: Decide that you going to stay in the ‘Contribution’ phase, where job satisfaction is the highest.

Page 51: ASSOCIATION OF WELL HEAD EQUIPMENT …awhem.org/PDFs/12-11-2012 Approved Minutes with Attachments.pdf · • David Zollo reported on activities of AWHEM TG to formulate an approach

Chapter 4: Are you coming with me?

Because of the fear of the future and the unknown, I am unable to fill my ships with enough hired sailors.  I stand before you, the worst of criminals of the prison, knowing more of you will say yes to avoid execution.  I can sail, I can navigate, I am good captain.  There will be lots of uncertainty, but I can guarantee your freedom if you come along, even though I cannot guarantee your exact future and where we will end up. – Knowing that ….are you coming with me?  (Christopher Columbus, 1492)

What to do differently: Commit for the entire journey.  Never jump ship in the middle of the ocean.  Only walk off proudly after serving for the entire voyage.  When you are done, make sure people are waving from the ship and wishing you the best.

Chapter 5: This cannot be what the high school guidance counselor was talking about

When we do what we choose to do, we are committed; when we do what we have to do, we are compliant. (Marshall Goldsmith)

Statistics show that 80% of people do not follow their field of college study within 5 years of starting work.  There is no perfect job, but you must get good at what you do, so that you can add value to yourself.  By doing so, you can move out of the frustration phase, and continue getting better and learning.  Do it for the sake of your career, not for your job.

What to do differently: Believe in yourself and don’t remain frustrated if your job doesn’t seem like the perfect fit.  Serve the organization and bring more solutions.  Keep learning, keep getting better.

Chapter 6: What a bunch of idiots

A cheerful heart is good medicine.  (Proverbs 17:22)

Various surveys show that the #1 reason people quit a company is because of their boss.  The truth is, people don’t quit companies — people quit other people.  We measure other people with a yardstick and keep forgetting that they are measuring us with their (different) yardstick.  We don’t have to like them, but we do have to respect other people.  Attitude is contagious — be careful who you hang out with.  Fill your mind with the good, the clean, the pure, the powerful, and the positive; otherwise, the world will fill it with trash.

What to do differently: Bark less, wag more.

Page 52: ASSOCIATION OF WELL HEAD EQUIPMENT …awhem.org/PDFs/12-11-2012 Approved Minutes with Attachments.pdf · • David Zollo reported on activities of AWHEM TG to formulate an approach

Chapter 7: If we don’t play as a team, we never win

We all drink from the same fountain, so don’t spit in the water. (J. Graham)

If you get labeled as not being a team player, this will certainly kill your career.  Teamwork is what makes an organization ‘organized’.  You can control your attitude and your commitment to contribute to the team.  Lead by example for other members of the team who may be struggling to understand this; offer support to other team members.  You will be a winner in the long run.

What to do differently: Make sure everyone knows you are a team player; prove it.

Chapter 8: Are you a climber or a hiker?

It takes all kinds to make a world.  (Mom)

Two kinds of employees: climbers and hikers.  Climbers want to move up and have their eyes set on higher ground.  Hikers like it right at their level.   Some of the most respected professions are made up of hikers, such as doctors, lawyers, and engineers; but they can be climbers if they start their own businesses.  Both groups are needed to run a company.  A company cannot function if it contains only one kind of employee.  Both groups need breaks to refresh themselves periodically, but do not become a ‘camper’ for too long.

What to do differently: Recognize that you are either a climber or hiker, and realize that the other type is not wrong, just different, and that we need both climbers and hikers.

Chapter 9: You are paid in 2 ways: Paycheck and Experience

You can’t help the poor by becoming one of them. (Abraham Lincoln)

The paycheck you receive is based on what you do, how well you do it, and how hard it is to replace you. So do your best to position yourself where you will keep gaining in experience — it will make you more valuable in the future.

What to do differently: Make sure you are gaining experience and not just repeating last year.

Chapter 10: Direct your future or someone else will

In the future, change will still be happening, only faster.  (J. Graham)

Properly wired, one can work from anywhere.  The only thing one should be thinking about is “How can I add value from anywhere?”  This is because companies are only going to pay for value in the future — they won’t need static employees.

What to do differently: Adapt to change. Then get ready for more change.

Page 53: ASSOCIATION OF WELL HEAD EQUIPMENT …awhem.org/PDFs/12-11-2012 Approved Minutes with Attachments.pdf · • David Zollo reported on activities of AWHEM TG to formulate an approach

Chapter 11: Most people stop looking for work as soon as they find a job.

Failure is just as predictable as success. (Brian Tracy)

Some people work just hard enough not to get fired, and in return, the company pays them just enough not to quit. What a terrible agreement!  Due to increasing globalization, companies will not be able to afford this agreement in the future.  Some other worker, perhaps in another country, will force a change in this situation.  So decide today to do one extra thing daily above the basics of your job to add value to your company. This will help your attitude and your career within a small amount of time.

What to do differently:  Always make sure you are giving more than you are paid to deliver.  Keep the balance of the scales in your favor.

Chapter 12:  Some traveled miles and miles to find work.

Count your blessings and you will find happiness. (J. Graham)

Today some people think the world owes them a job with benefits such as healthcare and insurance.  This has only happened in recent history and will probably fade away due to competition in the global economy.  In poorer societies, and with 7 billion people on the planet, it helps just to know you have a job.

What to do differently: Count your blessings that you have work.  If you don’t appreciate what you have now, you may never appreciate what you are going to get.

Chapter 13: Don’t jump ship

The journey is the reward. (Taoist Proverb)

The best swimmers are the ones who jump ship — because they know they can swim well and trust they can function well on any ship.  Your best employees will be the first to leave when not satisfied.  The worst employees have to be thrown over the side.  You, as an employee should not plan to live out either extreme.  Take full responsibility for your own career, including learning.

What to do differently:  Leave only if it is part of your plan.  Make sure you have a plan.  Know where you want to be in 5 years.

Page 54: ASSOCIATION OF WELL HEAD EQUIPMENT …awhem.org/PDFs/12-11-2012 Approved Minutes with Attachments.pdf · • David Zollo reported on activities of AWHEM TG to formulate an approach

Chapter 14: You can only step up from solid ground

Where you finish in life isn’t determined so much by where you start as by whether you start. (John C. Maxwell)

Stay career focused, and not just job focused, and then it’s easy to work hard.  View your actions like others do and develop a reputation as someone who earns money for the company, tells the truth, is discreet, keeps promises, and makes people want to work with you. You are creating a solid stepping stone for your next step up.

What to do differently: Define in one sentence why this job experience will be a solid stepping stone to allow you to step all the way up to your next opportunity, whenever and wherever that may be.

Chapter 15: We don’t need no education

Life gets better when you get better. (Jim Rohn)

Formal education will make you a living, but self‐education will make you rich.  Leaders are always learning and look to learning as a source of fresh ideas and insight.  Learning is a life‐long experience for humans.  If you are not learning, you are not growing.

What to do differently: Decide what you are going to have to know to function at your next career level.

Chapter 16: We don’t need leadership at the top — we need leadership everywhere

Find your voice and encourage others to find theirs. (Stephen Covey)

If you don’t lead today, you will not lead tomorrow.  You can practice leadership right where you are, right now, today.  A job title is a title, leadership is a reputation.  Work the plan through sincerely before blaming management about incorrect decisions: you can speak up for better decisions next time and you’ll be heard if you showed true sincerity the first time around.

What to do differently: Decide how you can be a leader right now and how you can lead by example.

Page 55: ASSOCIATION OF WELL HEAD EQUIPMENT …awhem.org/PDFs/12-11-2012 Approved Minutes with Attachments.pdf · • David Zollo reported on activities of AWHEM TG to formulate an approach

Chapter 17: If starting a company, would your peers hire you?

I can always predict the future — opportunity mixed with difficulty.  (Jim Rohn)

Everyone needs to vent, but if you are always venting, you are whining; whining gets old and it is contagious.  We are here due to choices we have made or because of choices we have let others make for us.  If we want to get better, we have to make it better, and not just hope on winning the lottery.

What to do differently:  Make sure you are a top performer and a team player so your peers are looking up to you and speaking well of you.

Chapter 18:  Knowledge, skills, and attitude

There may be over 7 billion people on this planet, but a handful of them think the world of you.  (J. Graham)

1) Teams teach and share knowledge. 2) Practice and polish skills. 3) Leaders should create a positive attitude in a top performing team, which is contagious, and makes each of us feel like we belong.

What to do differently:  Focus on creating positive attitudes, especially your own.

Chapter 19: I am worth 100%

When you win, nothing hurts. (Joe Namath)

You only get one shot at this life.  At the end of your life you don’t want to look back with dissatisfaction and say, “I could have done more!”

What to do differently: Remind yourself each day that you are worth giving 100%

Chapter 20: One last thing

Nothing in this world will take the place of persistence. (Calvin Coolidge)

Don’t give up on yourself.  Don’t get burned out and just go through the motions — it’s not a pretty place to be.  Decide right now that you will control your attitude and that it will be positive.  It’s never too late.

What to do differently: Remember this quote: “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I woke and saw that life was service. I acted, and behold, service was joy.” (R. Tagore)
