Mark 2:1-12 While ministry has those moments that make us smile, the truly satisfying aspect of ministry is the joy of seeing someone’s life changed through an encounter with Jesus. Mark, in his Gospel, records a classic example of that. “Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.’” (Mark 2:3-5) Some of the teachers of the law accused Jesus of blasphemy, because only God can forgive sins. So Jesus, knowing what they were thinking, challenged them by saying, ‘Which is easier? Your sins are forgiven, or get up, take your mat and walk?’ Can you just imagine being there and seeing that! This miracle is significant because it not only shows the power of Jesus and His grace to those who need Him, but it shows the way we can be part of His ministry. At St. Michael’s we know Jesus is our Saviour. He has the power to forgive our sins and His love for us is unconditional. In response to this, our community values are love, justice, compassion, forgiveness, service, courage, humility, hope, quality and appreciation. Prayer- Dear Jesus, Thank you for the miracles you provide every day. Help us to be compassionate to others and show gratitude for the many blessings we enjoy. Amen. Family Fun Night

On Friday 13th February

2015, the Principal, Mr Seidel, in conjunction with

the P&F Committee are organising a “Family Fun

Night” for all families to attend. The main aim for

this night is to come together as a school

community and enjoy free entertainment (jumping

castle, inflatable slide, mini golf and games on the

oval), and a meal whilst meeting new friends and

catching up with old ones all in the vicinity of the

school grounds. For catering purposes, an order

form will be sent home with your child tomorrow.

It would be appreciated if this could be completed

and returned to the front office with the correct

money by Friday 6th February. We look forward to

a fun filled and friendship making night.

School Attendance a. School begins at 8:50am, at which time

teachers mark the roll. Any students who are not present at this time are marked as late. It is important that students are at school ready to start the day at this time. We do understand there are the proverbial ‘bad’ mornings but these should be minimal. Lateness is recorded on the school reports.

b. Appointments: During the day students may need to attend appointments for a variety of reasons. All students are to be signed in and out at the front office by parents (or responsible adult) when this occurs.

c. Absences: The school has an absentee line which can be used out of school hours to leave a message. It is law for parents to inform the school of absences and why. If notice is not given you will be contacted seeking reasons for the absence.

d. Holidays: If you are planning holidays (or an extended period away from school) during school time, there are certain requirements, under law, which need to be fulfilled. The school is to be informed in writing

(letter or email) of any planned holidays.

Library Library borrowing commences this Thursday for Year 6s and Friday for the remainder of the school. The aim of borrowing is to expose students to a great variety of literature so that in turn, they can develop a love of reading through growing and knowing their individual reading preferences. Borrowing is for a two week period but books can returned earlier via the returns box at the entry of the library. Canteen Update Please find attached a letter outlining the structure for Canteen this year. Also attached to this week’s newsletter is a menu and order form. These, as explained in the attached letter, need to be returned to the office on a Tuesday by 4pm. As lunch orders are being outsourced away from the school grounds, late orders cannot be accepted. Thanks for your understanding in this. LLL Banking LLL Banking will resume on a Wednesday from next week, the 4th February. Please place your child’s bankbook in the box provided in the classroom or deliver to the front office on a Wednesday morning.

Children Drop Off and Collection Either end of the school day is a busy time. It is

important that as a community we follow the established

rules in dropping off or collecting students.

Church carpark: This area is to be used

only for parking. Please do not use it for

doing a quick drop off or collection of

children. It is not only dangerous for this to

occur but it also stops the flow of traffic.

Church St.(Kiss & Drop Zone) -There is an area

designated in front of the library for ‘quick’ drop off (in

the mornings) and collection (in the afternoon). If you

require a ‘Family Kiss & Drop Zone’ name plate, please

contact the front office asap. This area should be used

like a taxi rank (with a steady flow of traffic), and is not

to be used for waiting for ‘late’ children. The teacher on

duty in the afternoon will ask you to traverse the block

if your children are not ready waiting to be collected.

Any children not collected by 4.00pm will be sent to Out

of School Hours Care in Bukatila and a fee will be

incurred.

School Fees School fees were posted out late last week. If you have any questions about these please contact Mrs Tracy Downing, the Business Manager. Please see the February calendar for due dates for payments of fees. If you believe that you would qualify for School Card please notify the office as soon as possible

Hot Weather Policy

In days of hot weather, 36 degrees and above,

play is restricted to the shade at recess time.

There is no lunch time play outside. The students

are indoors doing cool activities.

Bushfire Policy Please find attached in this week’s

newsletter a copy of the procedures for ‘Extreme Fire Days’ and ‘Catastrophic Fire Days’ for the

Mt Lofty Ranges. These procedures have been established with regard for the

guidelines we work under as a school following a school site bushfire risk assessment. Please print and keep a copy

with your Fire Safety Action Plan.

Uniform Thank you to all parents for getting students dressed in correct school uniform. If you are unsure of the uniform requirements please feel free to view the Uniform Policy on the website. We have been advised by The Uniform Shop in Mt Barker that their orders of art smocks will hopefully arrive next week. Thankyou for your patience.

Attention Equestrian Riders St Michael’s will be entering a team into the Trinity College Interschool Gymkhana. The event is taking place on Friday the 27th of March at the Trinity College Equestrian Club, Gawler. This event is registered with the ESA and is considered to be a fun, entry level event. Competition caters for the Topsy, Encourage and Open Hacking, Novelties and Show Jumping events.

St Michael’s is looking for riders who have their own horse and are currently competing or attend Pony Club that are interested in participating at this event. Fiona Falzon will be coordinating the day and parents will be responsible for entering their children and horses into their classes as well as supervising them on the day.

Please see Mr Phillips or call Fiona Falzon on 0413 622 442 by Tuesday 10th of February to discuss your interest in competing at this event.

information which we have on our

Parent Information Night Format Parent Information Night will be held on Monday 2nd February. There are two sessions where Session 2 is a repeat of Session 1 for parents with children in other classes.

Session 1: Starts 7:00pm to 7:40pm. Children will be supervised in the playground Session 2: Starts 7:45pm to 8:30pm. Children will be supervised in the Library.

Multi-Lit Programme MultiLit is a programme written to help students with reading difficulties and one that we have found to be extremely effective in raising literacy achievement levels in our students over many years. The MultiLit team is run by the Learning Support teacher and volunteer tutors who work with students individually for 30 minute sessions throughout the school day. We are currently looking for volunteers to join our team and would love to hear from anyone who loves working with children and sharing the joy as they learn to read. An hour or two once a week is all the time you will need to commit to and we are flexible with these times. You may like to work with us in the mornings after school drop off, or afternoons if that suits you better. No previous experience required. We will train you and are always nearby if you have any questions. The St Michael’s staff spent a day last week in spiritual retreat. During the day we explored what God’s heaven on earth looks and feels like. We shared the times in our lives when we truly know the presence of God. These times differed greatly from the warmth of a friend’s hug to a Christmas dinner surrounded by loved ones; from a peaceful moment of gratitude, comfort and safety to the thrill of experiencing God’s creation in all its glory. The last session of the day was spent reflecting on how we can bring that heaven on earth to St Michael’s. We discussed many ways of growing our relationships with all those in our school community and how this fits within the KidsMatter framework. Kidsmatter is a national initiative that aims to contribute to:

improving student mental health and wellbeing

reducing mental health difficulties amongst

students, and

increasing support for students experiencing

mental health difficulties.

KidsMatter will be launch in a series of events beginning with a special devotion time in each class over the coming weeks. We look forward to partnering with parents, families and students through a variety of forums and settings with the aim of our students knowing they belong, they can realise their own abilities and they can cope the normal stresses of life. If you have any concerns for your child’s wellbeing in any way, I urge you to speak to your child’s teacher or come see me in the library so that we can support your children and work positively together so that our school is what God wants it to be. Welcome to German!!! Herzlich Wilkommen!!!

This year we welcome our two German assistant teachers, Franziska Olliges and Kristina Tappehorn from

Niedersachsen, seen below on arrival last night with one of their 2009 host sisters, Estelle Humphris. Their

flight was delayed by 90 minutes, so it was after 11 pm before they cleared customs! The girls will be of

great help in our German lessons and we have been making quite a few plans together.

There will be a strong reading focus in first term in all of the classes in addition to reinforcing the work

already done in speaking and listening, so we will be able to have small groups working with the assistant

teachers for a more individual approach.

Formal vocabulary extension will also start this year in all classes, and we will be sending home snap lock

bags with vocabulary flashcards for the students to use at home for optional revision and practice. Please

feel free to join in if you like: there will be a sheet later on with some suggested games and activities based

around these mini flashcards for everyone to try.

There will be some short excursions in and around Hahndorf in Term 1, so if you are free on Tuesdays &/or

Wednesdays and would like to be put on the German parent helper list, please contact me at:

artlings. S T U D I O

Artlings is offering innovative, after-school art class offered to children aged 5-12 years of age on site at St Michael's Lutheran beginning in Week 3. Our quality classes are designed to be a fun and high level complement to the education offered at schools and supports the new Australian Arts Curriculum.

Planned in conjunction with VAESA (Visual Arts Educators of South Australia), this term's after school program includes a stunning mobile collage of Koi Fish, an outside the box project for the 2015 Come Out Festival, inspiration from Picasso for a surrealist bottles study and more!

Artlings classes are on Mondays in the Creative Arts room at St Michael's from 3.40-4.40pm. Children come to Artlings direct from school classes. All children are welcome to come and try their first class free and we supply all smocks and resources. Feel free to contact us if you are interested in joining our inspired after-school classes. Students from local schools including Hahndorf and HCCS and Kindergarten children aged 5+ are warmly invited to attend.
