The Port of Antwerp is expected to handle a total of 198.8 million tonnes of freight by the end of 2014. That’s an increase of 4.2 per cent

in comparison with 2013 and a new record, informed a release.

The previous record dates from 2013, when the freight volume came to 190.8 million tonnes. The record growth was driven by container handling (up 5.6 per cent) and liquid bulk (up 5.4 per cent). The other

side of the coin is the contracting volume of labor-intensive break-bulk (down 3.3 per cent)

and dry bulk (down 4.9 per cent).

Dr i ven b y i n c r e a s ed productivity and throughput in all its three terminals, container traffic at Jawahar-lal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), the country’s premier box handling facility, shot up nearly 8 per cent to a record 4.45 million

TEUs in calendar year 2014, it is learnt. The volume handled in 2013 was 4.12 million TEUs.

APM Terminals Mumbai (GTI) handled 1.985 million TEUs in 2014, up from 1.899 million TEUs the previous year, while the Port Trust-run Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal

(JNPCT) continued to impress by handling 1.31 million TEUs (1.27 million TEUs).

DP World Nhava Sheva (NSICT) handled 1.15 million TEUs in 2014, as against 0.947 million

TEUs in 2013.

On the other hand, the volume of liquid cargo handled dipped slightly to 6.1 million tonnes in

2014, from 6.4 million tonnes the previous year, sources said.

24x7 Customs clearance extended to more sea ports, airports

JNPT, Mumbai, Kandla, Mundra, Pipavav, Chennai among sea ports

The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) has issued a circular announcing extension of 24x7 Customs clearance facility, with effect from December 31, 2014, at 14 more sea ports in respect of specified import and export goods and 13 more airports in respect of all export

goods, it is learnt.

The sea ports are: Chennai, Cochin, Ennore, Gopalpur, JNPT, Kakinada, Kandla, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mundra, Okha, Paradip, Pipavav,

Sikka, Tuticorin and Visakhapatnam.

The Railway Minister, Mr. Suresh Prabhu, recently stressed that private funding would

be used by the railways to reduce dependency on public finances.

He said there was no proposal to privatize the railways. Instead, the national transporter plans to optimize the utilization of all value assets in a way to supplement

public investment.

Rlys to use private funds to upgrade facilities

Several South-based trade organizations have opposed the recent decision to hike terminal handling charges (THC) at the International Container Transhipment

Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam in Kochi.

The terminal has reportedly implemented an across-the-board increase of 3.48 per cent in handling charges from January 1, 2015, to include all activities such as

movement of empties, transshipment, SSR and storage, as per a trade communiqué.

In a letter addressed to senior officials of the terminal and Cochin Port, they pointed out that the Port was already known as a high-cost facility and the increase would only result in it losing business. Once the hike was implemented, it would impose a greater financial burden on Port users, which would definitely lead to further

diversion of cargo to neighboring facilities, they said.

Trade organizations oppose hike in handling charges at Vallarpadam ICTT

The Greater Cochin Development Watch (GCDW) has urged the Union Ministry of

Shipping to retract the recent hike in handling charges at Cochin Port.

The NGO recently communicated to the Ministry pointing out that the increase in the charges would have an adverse impact on the port and the Vallarpadam international

container transshipment terminal (ICTT).

Cochin body wants port handling charges reduced

Truck rentals registered a 2.5-3.5 per cent decline on trunk routes, even as the price of diesel was slashed by Rs 2.84 a liter during December 2014. Diesel prices were initially lowered by Re 0.84 a liter on December 1, and

further by Rs 2 a liter on December 15, 2014.

However, cargo offerings from the manufacturing sector and export trade was low, said a release. There was a 15-20 per cent increase in dispatches on account of winter fruits and vegetables, which saved truck rentals from

the extra drop in freight charges.

The Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT) has criticized the Centre’s move to increase excise duty by

Rs 2/liter instead of passing on the benefit to customers, despite a drop in international crude prices.
