    BACKGROUND:

Africa is a continent of over 900m people, majority of whom are under the age of 30. Thispopulace is the bedrock upon whom our continent relies on for its future growth and

    development.

One place to find an abundance of this human resource is our tertiary institutions as it plays

host to the largest gathering of knowledge-seeking young people.

Statistical Analysis using Nigeria as a case studyNumber of ApprovedTertiary Institutions : 174 ( 2009)

Number ofTertiary Institution Enrollment: 1,391,527 (2005)

    Source:UNESCO Institute of Statistics (UIS)

This figure is set to keep expanding

At the tertiary education level is where skills are developed to build a knowledge economy.

What we should then expect is a corresponding return from these resource in our tertiary

institutions to drive sustainable development but reverse is the case as our continent stillsuffers an insignificant contribution from its academia's at this level. This situation would undermine the future growth of our continent if we do not harness

these skills and tap into their corresponding capacity to build us a sustainable economy.

    Two things have to happen:

    1. Improve our tertiary education system2. Develop a strategy to meaningfully engage the capacity of its recipients

    (students)

What we do as a third state actor is to provide a supporting framework that can

Sufficiently engage students within their local community to drive interventions thatfulfils genuine community needs while still maintaining an academic content. This is

    what we offer with ASPIRE

    WHO WE ARE:

African Students Partnership for Impact and Relevance (ASPIRE) is a rapidlygrowing student-led initiative established to empower and engage undergraduatestudents to drive sustainable interventions in the communities hosting their tertiary

    institution.

ASPIRE began with one female student in Lagos State Polytechnic Isolo and now hasover a hundred (100) undergraduate members spread across three (3) campus

    chapters in Nigeria.

Our conviction and corresponding actions has today made us one of Africa's mostpromising and proactive student-led initiative! As we continually have inspired,

transformed and challenged the way students view their involvement in drivingsustainable development in their communities.

Our aim is to therefore establish campus chapters of ASPIRE in all tertiary institutionsInAfrica so we can transform more communities!
