SAEINDIA AEROSPACE BOARD ACTIVITIES
Dr. Bala Bharadvaj is the Chairman of SAEINDIA AEROSPACE BOARD & Managing Director of Boeing Research & Technology-India Center based in Bangalore. He joined The Boeing Company in the United States in 1987. He has held various positions in Engineering, Technology Development, Technology Integration, Program Management and Strategic Planning. Prior to joining Boeing, he was on the faculty of the Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering Department at Boston University. During his long Aerospace career in the United States, Dr. Bharadvaj has worked on a variety of projects spanning analysis, design, lab testing and flight testing. Some highlights include:
Research on the Bio-Fluid Mechanics of blood flow through human arteries. Developed computational codes for aerodynamic analysis of 3D unsteady flows. Led a team to demonstrate Supersonic Laminar Flow in Flight on the NASA F-16XL-2 research aircraft. Led a team to design a supersonic transport aircraft using Multidisciplinary Design Optimization.Led a team to identify and integrate new technologies for the C-17 Globemaster III airlifter. Led teams to implement long-range technology plans for Boeing Defense Systems. During this journey, Dr. Bharadvaj has been honored with several awards, notably Degree with Distinction from IIT Madras; Monie Ferst Award for Best Ph.D. Thesis from Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society; Team Excellence Award from NASA Langley Research Center; Group Achievement Award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; Quality Hero Award and Process Management Role Model Award from BDS Long Beach in Boeing.In 2009, Dr. Bharadvaj moved to India, and is currently the MD of the Boeing Research & Technology Center located in Bangalore. In this role, he provides leadership to Boeing’s R&D and Engineering activities in India. His focus is on building partnerships with Academia, Govt. organizations, and industry in India; coordinating the development & execution of a variety of initiatives and projects; and providing support to Boeing’s US stakeholders.Dr. Bharadvaj holds a B.Tech. degree with Distinction in Aeronautical Engineering, from IIT Madras, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in the US. He also has an MBA from the University of California at Irvine, California, in the US. Dr. Bharadvaj is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics, and a member of Beta-Gamma-Sigma Business Honor Society. He is also a former member of SAE in the United States, and an active member of SAEINDIA. In SAEINDIA, Dr. Bharadvaj chairs the Aerospace Board, a team of eminent aerospace leaders who have come together to help develop a community of interest to enhance the aerospace ecosystem in India. Besides Aerospace Engineering, his interests include traveling, photography, wood working, gardening and Indian philosophy.
