Greetings.

I am so excited Maestro David Dworkin is coming back to northern Colorado in August. If you missed him when he was the keynote speaker and performer at our 2012 Amazing in Aging event, this is your opportunity.

Mr. Dworkin began his career as a clarinetist, serving as Principal Clarinetist for the American Symphony Orchestra under its legendary founder, Leopold Stokowski. He has played in and led orchestras at the famed Carnegie Hall and around the world. He was also the musical director on several TV shows.

But, you know what he did then, after his so-called retirement? He rewired, reconnected, repurposed and rejuvenated himself. Taking advantage of his unique career expertise, he developed an exhilarating new

“fitness fusion” program called Conductorcise, named one of North America’s most innovative active aging programs.

Nowadays you won’t find him in a tuxedo or his shiny black shoes—he has turned those in for a colorful tie-dyed T-shirt and a pair of Keds sneakers. Just like many of you who are thriving

Four basic tips to help an aging brain.Have you ever visited your doctor with concerns about memory challenges only to be told that maintaining a healthy memory isn’t much different from maintaining a healthy body? You have to eat right, exercise and get enough sleep.

According to Dr. Gary Small, Director of the UCLA Longevity Center, “Our brains are aging, just like our bodies. When someone engages in healthy behaviors, it is less likely they complain about their memory. While there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, maintaining healthy habits can help stave off its symptoms.”

Here are a few things to think about:

• Mental stimulation: Research shows that lifelong learning is associated with a lower risk for Alzheimer’s, but the cause-effect relationship hasn’t been proven. In doing crossword puzzles, you may get better at those puzzles, but it may not transfer to your everyday life.

• Nutrition: Being overweight doubles one’s risk for Alzheimer’s, as does diabetes. Obesity quadruples the risk. Dr. Small says some research has shown that eating five to seven servings of fruits and vegetables daily provides the antioxidants that may slow damage to the brain’s DNA.

• Exercise: While aerobic exercise and strength training are beneficial, even just brisk walking for 15 minutes daily may lower Alzheimer’s risk. When you get your heart pumping, you get more nutrients and oxygen to your brain cells.

• Social engagement: Social interactions can lower stress and stimulate the mind. Studies show that just 10 minutes of a stimulating conversation is better for cognitive health than watching a TV show.

Try this triple threat for staving off Alzheimer’s disease—simply go for a walk with a friend. You get the cardiovascular conditioning from the walk, you might lower your stress by being with a caring person and, last, having a stimulating conversation gives your brain cells a workout.

Memory training—UCLA’s four-week program in Greeley and Fort Collins.Who hasn't forgotten someone's name, misplaced their glasses or walked into a room and not remembered why they entered? This four-week class is for people 50+ who want to improve or maintain memory abilities by learning proven techniques developed at UCLA by Dr. Gary Small. These classes are not for anyone who has been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s or is taking medications for memory loss.

• Greeley: 10 a.m.–noon Wednesdays, July 31–Aug. 21 GMC, 6767 W. 29 St. Conference Room 1

• Fort Collins: 9:30–11:30 a.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 11–Oct. 2 Location to be determined

• Cost: $32 (scholarships available); registration is required.

Positive neuroplasticity: How to change your brain for the good. While we have the capacity to be calm, contented and centered, our active brains can sabotage our natural state of presence. The constant chatter we experience can be referred to as “monkey mind.” Unless we are aware of our monkey mind, we can be easily swept away by our thoughts, emotions and judgments. This mental treadmill can not only be exhausting, but it can prevent us from being open and available to what is happening within and around us.

The good news is that, regardless of how busy our monkey mind is, we still have the ability to rewire our brain to cultivate more calm, quiet and contentment. This is called positive neuroplasticity, and it can be done through intentional effort and repeated practices that slow us down and bring greater awareness to our habituated behaviors.

Rewiring our brains to quiet the mental treadmill requires that we take regular pauses and bring awareness to our constant chatter. We can begin this process with the help of the mindful STOP. This acronym reminds us to:

• Stop whatever you are doing.

• Take a few breaths. Deep diaphragmatic breaths can help move your focus from the busy mind to the belly.

• Observe what you are experiencing. Shifting your attention to your body and noticing what you are feeling will help you cultivate greater presence and awareness in that moment.

• Proceed with something that will support you. When you’ve given yourself the chance to stop, you will be far more capable of knowing what you need to do next that can be most helpful.

Learn more strategies for rewiring your brain at the upcoming class, Positive Brain Change, 10–11:30 a.m. on July 18 in Greeley. See program details on page eight.

By Sue Schneider, PhD, Larimer County office of Colorado State University Extension

Muscles are our heroes. As we age, joints, ligaments and cartilage wear down, and we rely on muscles to stabilize ball joints in the hips and shoulders. Exercise is the main key to keeping these joints working and pain-free.

HEALTHY AGING

Memory, music and fun. Do you remember when you learned your ABCs back in elementary school? Try singing that song out loud now. Do you know how you remembered this after so many years? It is probably because the letters are processed in the left brain and the rhythm and music tend to be processed in the right brain. When you put this together, it reinforces memory. Now try this: make a list of three or four things you need to do in the next several days. Now, pick a tune you like and set the list to music. You might be surprised how much you remember.

Another fun memory enhancer is to choose an article from a newspaper or magazine. Hold it upside down and try to read it. Since this is not the way we read, it may be difficult, but it is a good exercise for the brain as it struggles to make sense of the words.

Are you using your annual Medicare Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) hours? Do you know that an annual assessment of education, nutrition and emotional issues is part of ongoing diabetes education? Studies show that diabetes education helps people lower their blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Diabetes education works and helps people stay healthier.

Medicare covers outpatient diabetes self-management education and ongoing support through an accredited DSME program. The UCHealth Diabetes and Medical Nutrition Therapy department has been an American Diabetes Association Recognized program since 1993. We see patients at PVH in Fort Collins, MCR in Loveland and the Greeley Medical Clinic. Our staff of experienced registered nurses and registered dietitians has comprehensive knowledge of diabetes self-care. We specialize in helping people understand how to manage their diabetes and achieve their individualized health goals. Areas of focus include healthy eating, being active, monitoring

blood sugar, taking medication, problem-solving, healthy coping and reducing risks.

Medicare covers diabetes education for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes with a physician referral and approves ten hours of initial education in the first 12 months. Annually, you can receive two hours of follow-up education with a registered nurse and/or a registered dietitian.

The best times for diabetes education are:

• When you’re newly diagnosed.

• If you need assistance with better management (blood sugars) and preventing long-term complications.

• During changes in your diabetes treatment plan.

• For a yearly “tune-up,” including up-to-date treatment options.

Use this annual Medicare benefit for support in reaching your health goals. For more information, call 970.495.8205. Appointments are made by provider referral.

Diabetes education can help you live an extraordinary life.

UCHealth pharmacies—Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.Several UCHealth pharmacies are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are staffed by clinical pharmacists and technicians. These pharmacies are available to health system patients and community members, but please know that you don’t have to be a patient at a UCHealth facility to get your prescriptions filled at a UCHealth pharmacy.

The 24-hour pharmacies include:

• Fort Collins: The pharmacy is inside the freestanding emergency and lab facility just south of Harmony at 4630 Snow Mesa Drive. This pharmacy also has an anonymous drop-off box for unwanted or expired medications to be disposed of in a way that is safe for the environment and community. This is the only 24-hour, year-round drug drop-off location in Fort Collins and Loveland.

• Longmont: The pharmacy is on the first floor, inside Longs Peak Hospital, next to the gift shop. After hours you must enter through the emergency department. This is the only 24-hour pharmacy in Longmont and Boulder County.

• Greeley: The pharmacy is located inside the new Greeley Hospital at 6767 W. 29 Street, just off of Highway 34. This pharmacy will also have an anonymous drop-off box for unwanted or expired medications.

UCHealth patients can also request prescription refills through the My Health Connection website or through the mobile app.

Please visit uchealth.org and look under services for a complete list of the other UCHealth pharmacies throughout the region that have limited hours.

Aspen Club service reminder—quarterly medication and supplement reviews. UCHealth pharmacists will review your prescriptions, OTC drugs, vitamins and supplements and look for the potential of adverse reaction, BEERS list medications to avoid and other safety and cost-savings tips. Reviews are available in Fort Collins, Loveland and Longmont. Appointments are required.

Kim Ferro retires after 25 years.Kim Ferro, the Aspen Club’s Medicare coordinator, retired in early June. Her kind-hearted and giving spirit will truly be missed. She began her career at PVH as a medical social worker in 1994, serving in that position for 12 years. She then transitioned to the Aspen Club, working at Medical Center of the Rockies when it first opened in 2007. As the Aspen Club specialist there, she developed services and programs for members in Loveland, Windsor, Berthoud and Estes Park. For the past two years, she has been a tireless leader with one of our signature services: the Medicare SHIP counseling and education program. She looks forward to this next phase of life as she “re-purposes” herself, enjoying hiking, running, traveling and whatever life adventures come her way. Fortunately, Kim will still help in the Medicare program from time to time. For that we are truly lucky.

Kim, an avid runner, proudly stands in front of her medals.
