“The Kentucky landowners who were dissatisfied with

their family land titles sold their holdings and bought

land in the Miami valleys. Colonel Thomas Paxton who

won his spurs in General Wayne’s army and became

enamoured with the Miami Country, sold his farm in

Kentucky primarily because of a faulty title and bought

1,200 acres where Loveland now stands. He came here

at the age of sixty and bought numerous tracts from

Colonel Lytle, becoming a wealthy man before his death

in 1813. The names of ten of his children who came

to Ohio are associated with commodious residences,

beautiful gardens and great orchards.”

—William E. Smith, Southwestern Ohio, The Miami Valleys

Brief HistoryThe city is named after James Loveland, who operated a general store and post

office near the railroad tracks downtown. It was incorporated as a village on May

12, 1876, and later incorporated as a chartered city in 1961. In its early days,

Loveland was known as a resort town, with its summer homes for the wealthy,

earning it the nickname—

“Little Switzerland of the Miami Valley.”

“But here the valley

loveliest, Of all within

the blooming West, In

morning light before me

lies, A second earthly

Paradise; And here Ohio’s

fairest stream, Miami

glides— my chosen theme.”

—W. H. Venable, 1872, from “June on the Miami”

The StoryThe story of the Loveland Frogman begins on a barren stretch of road that runs

along the Miami River in Clermont County, just on the outskirts of the small town of

Loveland Ohio. At approximately 3:30 a.m. in May of 1955, an unnamed business man

claimed to witness three bipedal quasi reptilian creatures gathered at the side of the

road. The business man pulled over to the curb and observed the creatures for

what he estimated to be about 3 minutes. He went on to describe the creatures as

being between 3 and 4 feet tall, covered with a leathery skin and having webbed

hands and feet.

Tour De LovelandThe Loveland Bike Trail is a rail trail in Ohio. It is a section of the Little Miami Scenic Trail within the Loveland, Ohio city limits in Clermont County. Like most of the longer trail, it was built along the right–of–way of the abandoned Little Miami Railroad, on the Little Miami River.

There’s a Castle?

The StoryChâteau Laroche, also known as the Loveland Castle, is a museum on the banks of the Little Miami River in Loveland, Ohio, United States. A folly of a historical European castle, construction began in 1929 by Boy Scout troop leader Harry Andrews. He built the castle on two free plots of land that his scouts obtained by paying for one-year subscriptions to The Cincinnati Enquirer. When Andrews died in 1981 he willed the castle to his Boy Scout troop the Knights of the Golden Trail.

A Word from HarryChâteau Laroche was built as an expression and

reminder of the simple strength and rugged

grandeur of the mighty men who lived when

Knighthood was in flower. It was their knightly zeal

for honor, valor and manly purity that lifted mankind

out of the moral midnight of the dark ages and

started it towards the gray dawn of human hope.

Two icons to represent two very important parts of Loveland, The Little Miami River

and The Loveland Bike Trail. Both the river and trail are important parts of what

make Loveland great. The water icon is used for the river and the bike for the trail—

combined with the heart they make the perfect trifecta. How Sweet.
