Chandler Elected to National Academy of Sciences

ASPB President Vicki Chandler, a Universityof Arizona plant molecular biologist and ge-neticist known for her pioneering work inclarifying the mechanisms of gene regulationin maize, was elected to the National Acad-emy of Sciences on April 30, 2002.

“I have top-notch people in my lab,”Chandler said, “a lot of great students. And Ihave had three exceptional professors as men-tors along the way: Keith Yamamoto at UCSan Francisco, Virginia Walbot at StanfordUniversity, and Randy Schekman at UC Ber-keley. All have been very influential in mytraining as a scientist.”

Chandler has spent 17 years studying themechanisms that turn genes on and off in maize.She uses methods based on molecular geneticsand classical Mendelian genetics to figure outhow genes regulate one another when theycommunicate in the nucleus of the cell.

Chandler earned her under-graduate degree in biochemis-try from the University of Cali-fornia at Berkeley (1978). Sheholds a doctorate in biochem-istry from the University ofCalifornia, San Francisco(1983), and was a National Sci-ence Foundation postdoctoral fellow in theDepartment of Biology at Stanford Univer-sity from 1983 to 1985. From 1985 to 1997,she moved through the professorial ranks inthe department and the Institute of Molecu-lar Biology at the University of Oregon inEugene.

In 1997, she continued her work at theUniversity of Arizona, where she is a professorin the Department of Plant Sciences and a mem-ber of the Interdisciplinary Program in Genet-ics. She has a joint appointment in the Depart-

ment of Molecular and Cellu-lar Biology. She was recently ap-pointed associate director of thenewly formed Institute for Bio-medical Science and Biotechnol-ogy (IBSB) at the university. Inaddition to her research, Chan-dler teaches advanced genetics

courses for graduate students.Among Chandler’s numerous affiliations,

she is on the board of trustees for the Gor-don Research Conferences (1997–2003) andis past chair of that board. In addition to serv-ing as president of the American Society ofPlant Biologists, she is active in the GeneticsSociety and International Society of Plant Bi-ology, where she served on the board of di-rectors. She is also on the Biological Direc-torate Advisory Committee of the NationalScience Foundation. �

Donald L. Keister Retires in July

Dr. Donald L. Keister, plant physiologist atthe Beltsville Agricultural Research Service,USDA/ARS in Beltsville, Maryland, will re-tire in July after 43 years of research in plantphysiology and microbiology. He is a long-time member of ASPB. He received his M.S.and Ph.D. degrees from the University ofMaryland in 1959. His postdoctoral workwas at The Johns Hopkins University withDr. Anthony San Pietro. He worked with Dr.Bessel Kok at the Research Institute for Ad-vanced Studies and then moved to TheCharles F. Kettering Research Laboratory,where he worked on microbial photosynthe-sis. He is internationally recognized for hiswork on energy-linked reactions. Severaloriginal discoveries from this period includedthe mechanism of pyridine nucleotide reduc-tion in photosynthetic bacteria and the utili-zation of inorganic pyrophosphate as an en-

ergy source for energy-linked reactions. In thearea of nitrogen fixation, he co-discoverednitrogen fixation in free-living rhizobia.

He joined the Agricultural Research Servicein Beltsville in 1984 as research leader of theNitrogen Fixation and Soybean Genetics Lab(currently the Soybean Genomics and Improve-ment Lab) and has continued to contribute tothe elucidation of symbiotic plant–microbe in-teractions, including the role of microbial cy-tochromes and cyclic b-glucans. He has con-tributed more than 100 peer-reviewed journalarticles, book chapters, and reviews. Recently,he has served as acting associate director anddirector of the Plant Sciences Institute at theBeltsville Agricultural Research Center.

Why Don’t We Grow More Crops?Diversity of Crop Species and Cropping Systems

The rapid developments in agriculture inthe first half of the 20th century weretransformed in the second half by whatbecame known as the “Green Revolu-tion.” The advantages of potentially higheryielding varieties combined with bettermethods of growing, fertilizing, and har-vesting them encouraged adoption of“Green Revolution Technology” by mostfarmers in the developed world. The veryfact that global food production has keptpace with the demands of an increasingpopulation is largely a credit to GreenRevolution advocates and practitioners.However, the Green Revolution has notbeen successful everywhere, and its adop-tion has resulted in a loss of diversity, bothin crop species and forms of management.It has also meant that we now rely on anarrow range of crop species for virtuallyall our global food requirements. Africamay have benefited the least from this re-duction in global agricultural diversitycompared to other regions where impor-tant crop species have their centers of di-versity—e.g., wheat from Asia, maize fromSouth America, and rice from Indo Burma.Africa, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, istherefore increasingly reliant on the selec-tion and adaptation of germplasm fromelsewhere in the world and by externalagencies for the bulk of its agricultural pro-duction. It could be argued that the sub-sistence sector in Africa should seek an al-ternative strategy, one aimed at develop-ing the potential of presently underutilized

indigenous species and management sys-tems. In many cases these species and sys-tems have survived despite agricultural re-search and extension agencies, largelythrough the tenacity of the crops and com-mitment of the growers.

There are a number of important spe-cies that can be considered underutilized,ranging from fruits such as jackfruit tofield crops such as bambara groundnut.Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea

(L.) Verdc) is an indigenous grain legumegrown mainly by subsistence women farm-ers in drier parts of sub-Saharan Africa.Its seeds can be eaten fresh (when semi-ripe) or as a pulse (when dry and mature)or can be ground into flour. Its commonEnglish name derives from the Bambaratribe that now lives mainly in Mali. How-ever, its center of origin is thought to befrom the Jos plateau and Yola regions ofNorthern Nigeria through to Garua inCameroon and possibly as far as the Cen-tral African Republic. For many centuriesbambara groundnut has been cultivatedin tropical Africa, south of the Sahara.However, slaves also took the crop toSurinam, and it has been found in smallquantities in South and Central America,India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philip-pines, Sri Lanka, and parts of NorthernAustralia.

Research on bambara groundnut is arare example of a multidisciplinary, inter-national effort to study and assess the po-tential of an underutilized crop. Since1988, scientists in four European coun-tries—United Kingdom, the Netherlands,Germany, and Italy—have joined forceswith scientists, growers, traders, and con-sumers in Botswana, Tanzania, SierraLeone, Swaziland, Namibia, and Zimba-bwe to work on this indigenous Africanlegume. Together, their efforts provide acomprehensive assessment of the ecophysi-ology, agronomy, nutritional biochemis-try, agroprocessing, genetics, and market-

ing potential of bambara groundnut. TheTropical Crops Research Unit of the Uni-versity of Nottingham (United Kingdom)has conducted detailed research onbambara groundnut since 1988. Bambara groundnut is just one ex-ample of those underutilized species thathave recently received research attention.We believe many more will, given currentunderstanding of the need for agriculturalbiodiversity. Perhaps the most importantachievement for those advocating thewider recognition of underutilized cropsis the fact that the potential contributionof underutilized crops to food security, im-proved human health, and biodiversityconservation was recognized by the Glo-bal Forum on Agricultural Research(GFAR) and Consultative Group on In-ternational Agricultural Research(CGIAR) in their meetings in Germany in2000. I have no doubt that the morepeople know about the importance ofunderutilized crop species, the morechance we stand of improving the produc-tivity of these species. �

Unfinished BusinessAgent Orange in Vietnam

Perspective

From March 3 to 7, 2002, an internationalconference of predominantly Americanand Vietnamese scientists gathered inHanoi under the auspices of the NationalInstitute of Environmental Health Sciences(NIEHS, part of NIH) and its Vietnamesecounterpart organization to examine theenvironmental and public health conse-quences of the massive use of Agent Or-ange during the Vietnam War. I was askedto join the American delegation, and atthe end of the conference, also served asco-chairman with Vo Quy, a distinguishedecologist from the University of Hanoi, ofan additional smaller convocation of ap-propriate botanists and environmentaliststo plan for future cooperative internationalactivities. At the end of all sessions, offi-cials of both countries signed a memoran-dum of understanding, spelling out con-ditions under which such cooperative ac-tivities might be undertaken. These devel-opments followed establishment of formaldiplomatic relations between the twocountries in 1995, and the conclusion ofa trade treaty within the last year.

This meeting represented one of thefirst actions taken by the United States torecognize the existence of continuing prob-lems resulting from our aerial distributionof the formulated abscission-inducing andherbicidal mixture of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-Tthat became known as Agent Orange. Thedevelopment of such herbicides and defo-liants resulted directly from fundamentalinvestigations on plant hormones, espe-cially auxin, performed mainly by plantphysiologists. The defoliation campaign,which lasted from about 1964 to 1970,was undertaken primarily to reveal mili-tary activities along the Ho Chi MinhTrail, a network of pathways used to ferry

personnel and materiel from the North toregions of the South in which military ac-tivity was occurring. Once these activitieswere revealed, they were subjected to aerialinterdiction. Under the code name Opera-tion Ranch Hand, groups of four cargoplanes outfitted with tanks and sprayingbooms would fly in formation over vastareas of upland forest and later over man-grove communities lining the estuaries be-low Saigon, releasing a spray of the herbi-cide that defoliated trees after several days.Some areas received multiple spray treat-ment, resulting in considerable killing.

By the time the operation was broughtto a halt by President Nixon in 1970, ithad become the largest chemical warfareoperation in history, having covered anarea equivalent to two-thirds of the stateof Massachusetts. The ecological damageresulting from the operation was vast; inthe upland forest regions, many valuabletimber trees such as teak were killed, andthe area they had occupied was taken overlargely by a mixture of scrub bamboo andnoxious weeds such as wire grass andImperata grass. Mangrove communitiesproved remarkably sensitive to the herbi-cide, a single spray resulting in almostcomplete killing. In view of the importanceof mangroves in the life cycles of fish andshellfish, one of the main protein sourcesfor the Vietnamese people, this damagewas serious. Neither mangrove nor uplandforest communities have recovered sub-stantially in the quarter century that haselapsed since the end of the war, despiteenergetic but poorly funded interventionsby the Vietnamese.

Public health considerations becameapparent after the discovery that Agent Or-ange was contaminated by dioxins that

arose as byproducts of the synthesis of2,4,5-T. This herbicide is usually synthe-sized from 2,4,5-trichlophenol and halo-genated acetic acid under alkaline condi-tions. When the reaction goes as planned,the phenolic and acetic acid moietiescouple to form the desired product; butwhen two of the phenolic moieties couplein a head-to-tail fashion, they form theunwanted highly toxic side products calleddioxins, of which 2,3,7,8-tetrachloro-paradibenzodioxin (TCDD) is the most toxic.This compound is highly teratogenic andprobably carcinogenic to rodents andprobably humans in the parts-per-trillionrange. Since the aerial spray of Agent Or-ange drifted over populated areas, it con-taminated people, water, and food, pro-ducing still largely uncharacterized dam-age. It is known that soil around formerairbases like Da Nang are still grossly con-taminated with dangerous levels of diox-ins and that various levels of TCDD havebeen detected in people, fish, plant materi-als, and soil. Obviously, there is much ana-lytical and remediation work to be donein both the ecological and public healthfields, but whether such work will be un-dertaken depends on the extent to whichfurther activities will be funded by NIEHS.

It would seem appropriate for theAmerican Society of Plant Biologists, aspart of its public activities agenda, to lendactive support to efforts to promote suchinvestigation and remediation. �

1. Has being a member helped you inyour career? If so, how?Being a member of ASPB has definitelyhelped my career. First and foremost,I have formed and maintained valu-able professional relationshipsthrough ASPB meetings that have ledto important collaborative opportu-nities. In addition, my paper andposter presentations at meetings haveraised my visibility among scientificpeers, which is extremely importantfor a young scientist like myself. Fi-nally, I have benefited from the mon-etary support provided by ASPB, be-ginning with the complimentarymembership that first introduced meto the Society, to a travel grant topresent my first paper at the San Di-ego meeting in 2000, to other usefulopportunities.

2. Why has being a member of ASPBbeen important?Nearly all the scientists I hold in highesteem as experts in plant biology are

members of this Society, and my mem-bership allows me to be considered withinthat elite group. Participation in ASPBevents allows me to interact with theseprofessionals and to share my work andideas. The professional bar I’ve set formyself is based in no small part on theideals reflected by the Society, its publi-cations, and its members.

3. Was anyone instrumental in getting youto join ASPB?My doctoral adviser, Leon Kochian, paidfor my first trip to the Society’s annualmeeting in Madison (1998) and was prob-ably the person who recommended mefor a free membership that year. The pre-vious year, my first year in his lab, mycolleagues attended the meeting but I didnot. I was admittedly jealous when I heardthem talking about how good it was.When Leon took me to the meeting thefollowing year, I finally understood whateveryone was talking about. Because ofthis experience, I nominated two of myown students this year for complimentarymemberships in ASPB.

4. What would you tell nonmembers toencourage them to join?There are three benefits that I would stressto a potential member: contacts, oppor-tunities, and resources. Membership andparticipation in ASPB meetings provide avenue to establish professional contacts,some of which you may not even realizeyou need until the circumstance arises. Sec-ond, these interactions and contacts willalmost certainly provide important profes-sional opportunities, including the oppor-tunity for students and young faculty topresent papers alongside established ex-perts, travel support for meetings, and

other educational and scientific opportu-nities. Finally, the perks of membership,such as electronic access to Plant Physiol-

ogy and The Plant Cell and online featureslike CiteTrack (the electronic personal re-search alerting service), are resources thatwill quickly become something that youcan't believe you ever lived without.

When I do read papers fromthese journals, it is usually at home in theevening or while I’m traveling.

8. What do you think is the next “bigthing” in plant biology?I think the next big thing in plant biologywill be the effort to demonstrate the safetyof transgenic plants. The justification formany scientific efforts is to understandand to increase plant tolerance, resistance,growth, and productivity for human ben-

efit. Yet large segments of the world’s popu-lation resist these efforts, and we cannotyet allay all their concerns. If we are to usebiotechnology to help mankind, I think weneed to listen to these questions and re-spond accordingly, balancing cautionagainst the world’s more immediate needs.

9. What person, living or dead, do youmost admire?I would say I most admire the authorsJ.R.R. Tolkien and Frank Herbert. Thesemen created entire universes in which theyimmersed themselves. These worlds havea magnetism of their own that continuesto draw people in. The men and their cre-ations inspire individuals to think, ques-tion, and explore for themselves—first inthese fictional worlds and then in the realone. These authors had a tremendousimpact on me when I was growing up andinfluenced the creativity and analyticalabilities I use every day.

10. What are you reading these days?I make an effort to skim through Plant

Physiology, Chemical and Engineering

News, and the articles picked up byCiteTrack and my e-mail alerts. We usearticles from Plant Physiology and The

Plant Cell every semester in a seminarcourse in my department, so I read thosearticles as well. I also reread at least oneTolkien or Herbert book each year forrelaxation and inspiration.

11. Do you have any hobbies?When I have the time, I like to read, watchsci-fi movies, and play computer games.I also try to spend as much time with mykids as possible.

12. What is your most treasured possession?A first edition, autographed hardboundnovel by Carl Sagan.

• Amend the result: Your search terms arepre-entered for you in the Quick Searchbox. You can add or replace terms thereand click “go” or change the scope of yoursearch from (as shown in this example) the330+ highly cited journals whose full textis found at HighWire, to include all of thejournals found in MEDLINE.

• Sort the result: The default sort for thesearch engine shows you “best matches,”meaning those articles in which yoursearch terms showed up most frequently.Clicking on “newest first” will reorderyour search result by date.

• See more per page: By default, the searchengine shows you 10 items on each page.You can ask for 25, 40, 60, or 80 resultsper page by clicking on the appropriatenumber.

Condense the result: The standard form foreach citation provides a lot of information,such as a full list of authors, full citation in-formation, which section of a journal an ar-ticle is in, whether the article is a review, andso on. More than 20 years ago, I went from a smalltown in rural Wisconsin to live for a year inCosta Rica. I lived for a time in the montanecloud forest of San Gerardo de Dota, wherethe Savegre River descends in sparkling cas-cades from the divide of the Sierra Talamancathrough a verdant forest. Unlike the aston-ishing diversity of trees in the tropical low-land forest, perhaps 90 percent of trees in themontane cloud forest here are oaks. They areof the same genus, Quercus, as oaks of myhomeland, but unlike my oaks, they are enor-mously tall and virtually evergreen withglossy, elongate, unlobed leaves, and they dripwith vines and bromeliads accented here andthere by the bright colors of trogons and callsof the resplendent quetzal. From this forest, Iwent to live for several months in Colorado,and I remember thinking that, with respectto the landscape, living in Colorado was amuch bigger change for me—coming origi-nally from the Wisconsin countryside—thanit had been to live in the montane forest ofCosta Rica. Although the details changed dra-matically, the overall aspect of forest and fieldin San Gerardo (oak forests, no less, and fieldswith Holstein cows, bordered by appleorchards) did not seem incredibly foreigncompared to the fields and forests of centralWisconsin.

Two years ago I again moved from a lushgreen countryside populated largely with oaks—this time that of central Pennsylvania—to

Reflections on a Landscape

Colorado, where the front range of the RockyMountains meets the eastern plains, and I wasagain struck by the enormity of the change inthe landscape. Although I have always lovedthe alpine meadows and ragged peaks of thehigh mountains, I wondered if I would everget used to—much less grow to appreciate—the foothills landscape, which on first inspec-tion appeared as an incredibly barren, almostentirely brown near desert. I remember climb-ing to a local highpoint, Horsetooth Rock,looking east across the plains in April, andthinking oh my God... this is a desert! ...there

is almost nothing green here... can I possibly

enjoy living here? As if to emphasize the point,we then chose to live on the western edge oftown, up against the barren foothills, withthe prairie dogs—and no trees. No trees?!

What a pleasant surprise, then, to find overthe past two years that I have not just gottenused to this landscape, I have actually fallenin love with it. Almost daily I have gone forruns along trails in the foothills; runs punc-tuated by frequent walking breaks as I havestopped to become better acquainted with theflora and fauna of my new home. I love themany different muted shades of browns andreds and grays (and yes, even greens) of thefoothills and grasslands. I almost feel that Ihave come to see colors more distinctly, and Itake more notice of colors in the landscapewherever I go. I especially love to drive northand east to the high plains, where the ante-

lope graze in the sagebrush, and endless grass-lands roll along as far as the eye can see.

I have also enjoyed designing the landscapeof our new garden. Rather than planting myfavorite Eastern trees and shrubs, such asflowering dogwood, redbud, and azalea, wechose local natives, such as Colorado bluespruce, western river birch, and quaking as-pen. We maintain a minimal lawn area andplant the rest with low-water-use rock-gar-den and prairie perennials. Looking back onmy history of landscapes, it is no surprise thatsome of the first trees I planted here were oaks.Appropriately for this landscape, they areGambel oaks (Quercus gambelii), a lovelysmall tree that is native to the central RockyMountains. These two little trees have takenroot and this spring produced a fine crop oftheir delicate, light green, lobed leaves. Weare at home in the Colorado foothills, theGambel oaks and me. �

Congressional Exhibition and Reception on NSF-SponsoredResearch Features ASPB Exhibit on Lowering Food Allergies

NSF Director Rita Colwell, two members ofCongress, and a number of congressional staffvisited the ASPB poster exhibit at the annualCongressional Exhibition and Receptionsponsored by the Coalition for National Sci-ence Funding (CNSF) May 15 in the RayburnHouse Office Building.

The ASPB poster and related color bro-chure, “T(rx) Cereals: Lowering Food Aller-gies with Thioredoxin,” explained researchconducted by Committee on Public Affairschair Peggy Lemaux and past president BobBuchanan, both of the University of Califor-nia at Berkeley. The brochure can be foundon the ASPB web site at www.aspb.org in theplant biotechnology section. Barbara Alonso,also at UC-Berkeley, prepared the poster andbrochure with Lemaux and Buchanan.

Lemaux explained this NSF-sponsored re-search to attendees who visited the ASPBbooth, including Colwell; Congressman BobEtheridge (D-NC) of both the Science Com-mittee and the Agriculture Committee; Con-gresswoman Lois Capps (D-CA); Joel Widder,majority staff on the Senate VA, HUD andIndependent Agencies Subcommittee (whichannually determines spending for NSF); andother congressional staff.

Widder, who had visited Lemaux’s lab afew months earlier to review major NSF re-search programs such as plant genome re-search, remarked that he was impressed withthe research. Capps said that as a former nurseshe certainly recognized the importance of re-search that inactivates allergens and leads tosafer foods. Capps offered to provide any as-sistance that she could.

In discussions with Colwell, Lemauxtraced the background of years of basic re-search sponsored by NSF on thioredoxin thatled to this unexpected discovery related tolowering food allergies. Lemaux discussedhands-on displays, including wheat, teosinte,strings of beads representing genes, and otheritems with visitors.

There were more than 30 poster exhibi-tors at this exhibition, primarily representingscience societies and universities. The programwith the list of exhibitors can be found athttp://www.cnsfweb.org/exprogram02.pdf.

This was the eighth annual CNSF congres-sional exhibition, and ASPB has participatedin each one. Again this year, ASPB had theonly plant science exhibit there. The eventprovides an opportunity to explain the im-portance of leading research sponsored byNSF to congressional offices in a relativelyfestive reception setting. This is the major re-ception and exhibi-tion of the year forNSF on the Hill, andthe ASPB Public Af-fairs Office helpedinitiate this popularevent about eightyears ago.

Brochures devel-oped for the exhibitsin this and past yearsare also used in sub-

sequent communications and meetings withcongressional staff and Executive Branch of-ficials as appropriate. For example, the NRIalso contributed to support of this researchrelated to lowering food allergies withthioredoxin. ASPB staff provided a copy ofthe brochure “T(rx) Cereals: Lowering FoodAllergies with Thioredoxin” to RodneyBrown, deputy undersecretary of Departmentof Agriculture Research, Education and Eco-nomics, during a May 30 meeting.

With anti-biotech interests making asser-tions related to allergen risks in modifiedfoods, Lemaux and Buchanan’s research of-fers an example of how, instead, biotechnol-ogy can be applied to inactivate allergens thatwould otherwise be found in a traditionallybred food crop. �

Some representatives of physical sciences in-terests, particularly in the area of physics, havebeen conducting a campaign for “more bal-ance” in federal funding. Citing a doublingof funding for life sciences research supportedby the National Institutes of Health (NIH),the physical sciences campaign for “morebalance” argues that federal support for physi-cal sciences research has been somewhat scantby comparison.

However, the “more balance” campaign isarguably less than collegial in design, and itwrongly includes targeting of non-biomedicallife sciences. The campaign has the potentialto unfairly divert support for non-biomedicallife sciences research, which has not been ona doubling track, to research programs in the

physical sciences at various federal agencies.(See related story on NSF Budget Authoriza-tion on page 15 of this issue.)

ASPB and the American Institute of Bio-logical Sciences (AIBS) contacted the Ameri-can Association for the Advancement of Sci-ence (AAAS) on the need to present federalbudget analyses that distinguish trends in fed-eral funding for biomedical research from lifesciences research in other areas. For example,AAAS is providing input to the President’sCouncil of Advisors on Science and Technol-ogy (PCAST) assessing the federal investmentin science and technology R&D.

Kei Koizumi of the AAAS R&D Budget andPolicy Program responded to ASPB and AIBSthat he agrees that the catch-all category of

“life sciences” masks the divergent trends forthe biomedical sciences and natural biology.He said he would work with RAND, a non-profit institution that addresses policy anddecision making through research analysis,and PCAST to make the links between agencyfunding decisions and impacts on science dis-ciplines very clear to show varying degrees offederal support within the life sciences.

While ASPB has commended Congress forits strong support of NIH, it would be incor-rect to say that federal support for all life sci-ences research has increased at the level ofbiomedical research. ASPB and AIBS areworking with other life sciences groups onfurther actions needed to seek more fairnessin assessing the “more balance” campaign. �

Public Affairs

The enacted Farm Bill includes a provisionon biotechnology risk assessment researchsupported by ASPB. The provision not onlyaddresses risks that might be posed by plantsand animals that are products of agriculturalbiotechnology, but also looks at comparativerisks of these products with traditionally bredplants and animals.

Senate and House Conference members ac-cepted this broader provision addressing com-parative risks approved by the House. Theconference agreement on the Farm Bill waslater approved by Congress.

ASPB Public Affairs staff had worked withHouse Committee staff in addressing the ques-tion of comparative risks early in the draft-ing stages of the Farm Bill. Discussions in anearlier meeting of the Committee on PublicAffairs had cited the need to look not only at

risks in genetically modified crops, but alsoat how these risks compare with risks associ-ated with other crops.

As Senate and House Conference memberswere considering the Farm Bill, ASPB Presi-dent Vicki Chandler wrote to House and Sen-ate members who were heading up the con-ference and noted the following:

“With regard to the issue of risk as-sessment, ASPB supports House Agri-culture Committee Report Section 747on Biotechnology Risk Assessment Re-search. This provision takes the neededholistic approach to risk assessment,”Chandler commented in the letter. “Acomparative analysis between biotech-nology systems and other productionsystems, as provided in the House pro-vision, will provide more complete,

balanced and accurate information forconsumers, farmers and policymakersto consider.”

The Joint Explanatory Statement of theConference Committee notes that “The con-ference substitute adopts the House provisionwith an amendment adding genetically engi-neered microorganisms as a priority topic forrisk assessment research, including interna-tional partnerships on bio-safety as a researchpriority and reducing the amount withheldfrom biotechnology research funding [forrisk assessment research] from 3 percent to 2percent.”

President Bush signed the Farm Bill, and itbecame Public Law 107-171 on May 13,2002. �

The House of Representatives approved onMay 14 Congressman Nick Smith’s (R-MI)legislation (H.R. 2051) to develop regionalplant genome research centers and includesCongresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson’s(D-TX) proposal to promote research part-nerships to study plant biotechnology inthe developing world.

The research centers would focus on ar-eas of basic research such as cultivatingplants in extreme conditions, developing al-ternative uses for crops including energy pro-duction, and disseminating information onthe ecological or other consequences of ge-netically engineered plants. The bill autho-rizes $9 million for fiscal year 2002 and$13.5 million for each of the two followingyears.

The bill now moves to the Senate forconsideration. �

The North Carolina Museum of Life and Sci-ences in Raleigh sponsored an evening pro-gram May 30 on “Tinkering with Nature:Food and Medicine in the Genomic Age.” Theprogram featured ASPB Committee on Pub-lic Affairs member James Siedow of DukeUniversity, who discussed safety and environ-mental issues related to genetically modifiedcrops.

Michael Yudell, a fellow at the AmericanMuseum of Natural History, spoke on ethi-cal issues related to the genomics revolution,primarily with regard to its application tomedicine. Adrianne Massey moderated theprogram and spoke on both topics in heropening remarks.

The nearly 150 people who attended theprogram appeared to have a fairly broad,

non-technical background and consider-able interest in the issue, Siedow noted.There were a lot of questions asked duringthe program, which ended at 9:00 p.m. andcontinued in informal groups until museumofficials moved everyone out of the build-ing at 9:45 p.m.

House Science Committee Supports ASPB Request to

Include Biology in NSF Budget Authorization Bill “Trends” Section

ASPB Public Affairs staff and public affairsrepresentatives from three other associationsmet with House Science Committee staff rep-resenting committee leadership in May andasked that the NSF budget authorization billH.R. 4664 be amended so that language insection 5 of the bill no longer exclude bio-logical sciences (and the social sciences).

Section 5 of the bill had called for sub-mission of an annual plan by NSF describ-ing how allocation of research funding will“(2) affect trends in research support formajor fields and subfields of the physical sci-ences, mathematics and engineering includ-ing for emerging multidisciplinary researchareas; and (3) ensure that research in thephysical sciences, mathematics and engineer-ing is adequate to address important researchopportunities in these fields.”

Committee representatives led by Chair-man Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) agreed withASPB and the three other organizations andsubsequently made the change with anamendment approved by the full committeelater that month. The House of Representa-tives subsequently approved the bill with theamended provision.

In paragraph two (trends) of the bill,“physical science” became “science” so thateverything is tracked to develop a better

baseline. Paragraph three was changed toread: “…is designed to achieve an appropri-ate balance among major fields and subfieldsof science, mathematics and engineering….”

These changes from “physical science” tothe broader term “science” address ASPB’sbiology community concerns. ASPB is alsoasking the Science Committee to guardagainst combining the non-biomedical lifesciences with biomedical research when look-ing at federal funding trends.

Some physical science groups have calledon Congress to provide what they call “morebalance” in federal funding. These same in-terest groups have been citing the doublingof funding track that has been followed forthe National Institutes of Health. However,most non-medical life sciences have not beenon a doubling track and are threatened to beadversely affected by the purported need for“more balance” campaign of some physicalscience representatives.

The physical science representatives havemaintained that the large budget increasesfor NIH provide a disproportionate amountof funding for the life sciences. The campaignby these groups is unfairly broad as it doesnot mention the distinction between biomedi-cal research and non-biomedical research inthe life sciences. To mount a highly visible

campaign seeking “more balance” can alsotake science interests off more importantmessages and make them appear insteadlike they are engaged in interdisciplinarysquabbling.

There is still more work that needs to bedone by the biology community in responseto what is the purported need for “more bal-ance” campaign of many physical scientists.ASPB is working with the American Insti-tute of Biological Sciences (AIBS), which alsoattended the May meeting, and some otherbiological science groups on conducting fu-ture efforts as part of a broader communityresponse to the aggressive campaign by somephysical science groups to obtain what theylabel “more balance” in the federal researchportfolio. ASPB has commended Congress for its sig-nificant budget increases for NIH. The ex-ample shown at NIH may have helped Sena-tors Christopher Bond (R-MO), BarbaraMikulski (D-MD), and their colleaguesin their strong and successful efforts to obtainincreases for NSF that have been several timeshigher than the rate of inflation. In addition tonon-medical life sciences, physical sciencesand other science disciplines also benefitedfrom these increases for NSF. �

up a booth outside the auditorium and passedout literature on “The Health Hazards ofGenetically Engineered Foods,” written byLaurie Lynch. One of the two representativesadded a doom-saying prediction, warning thateating genetically modified foods will lead tothe extinction of the human race. Siedow, agenetically modified food consumer still verymuch in existence, noted that this comment

did appear to weigh on the coalitionrepresentative’s credibility.

The program was held in conjunction withan exhibit at the museum called the “GenomicRevolution.” The exhibit was originally de-veloped by the American Museum of Natu-ral History in New York and is now travelingthroughout the country. The first stop wasRaleigh, where the exhibit is being shown

from April 20 through September 2. A por-tion of the exhibit is devoted to presentingbenefits and risks of genetically modifiedcrops. �

After spending much of the past three centu-ries subjected to domination by powerfulneighbors, including the ruthless reigns ofAdolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, Poland is look-ing west for help in its relatively early yearsas an independent, democratic nation with afree-market economy.

Poland plans to join the European Union(EU) in coming years in a move that couldhelp strengthen its economy. To join the EU,Poland must develop policies in a number ofareas, including plant biotechnology.

To help in further understanding issues re-lated to plant biotechnology in the UnitedStates, Poland hosted a delegation includingASPB Committee on Public Affairs memberJim Siedow of Duke University in June. Thedelegation was sponsored by the U.S. Depart-ment of Agriculture Foreign AgriculturalService.

In meetings with government officials, re-searchers, and the news media, Siedow ad-dressed scientific and environmental issuesrelated to modified foods. Tom Zinnen, bio-technology policy and outreach specialistfrom the University of Wisconsin, addressedregulation of modified foods in the UnitedStates. Andy Benson, director of internationaloutreach for the International Food Informa-tion Council, spoke on biotechnology com-munications, public opinion, and food safety.

In addition, this delegation was joined byProfessor Tomasz Twardoski of the Univer-sity of Poznan and the Polish Academy ofSciences, who spoke on the value-added fea-tures of crop biotechnology. Mark Hawthorne

USDA, Siedow Visit Poland to Discuss GMOs withPublic Officials, Media, Scientists

of USDA was the team leader, and WayneMolstad of the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw wasthe local organizer.

Siedow and others in the U.S. delegationmet with representatives of 18 Polish govern-ment ministries and representatives of a fewnongovernmental organizations (NGOs) onMonday, June 3. Each member of the delega-tion gave a 45-minute talk (with simultaneoustranslation) and fielded questions for 15–20minutes afterward. After the entire session,there was another open question period.Siedow noted that there were a number ofthoughtful questions raised. Just as is foundin the United States, an anti-biotechnologyNGO representative took part in the ques-tion-and-answer period and delivered a speechagainst modified foods.

The session was followed by a formal lun-cheon, which coincided with the Poland–South Korea World Cup soccer game, so fur-ther discussions on genetically modified or-ganisms (GMOs) were minimal at the lun-cheon, Siedow noted.

On Wednesday, June 5, the U.S. delega-tion went to the Agricultural University ofWarsaw (AUW), located in a Warsaw suburb,where Siedow and his colleagues met withsome 20 faculty members. Discussions onmodified crops continued for about two-and-a-half hours. Siedow said that for themost part, the Polish faculty members weresupportive of research on the plant biotech-nology and critical of their government’scurrent restrictive regulations on modifiedfoods.

On Thursday, June 6, Siedow and the restof the U.S. delegation met with about 15 rep-resentatives of various media (radio, TV, andprint). The program followed generally thesame format as the meeting with ministry of-ficials. Siedow said there were a lot of lead-ing questions from the media (including anunusual question about a possible linkagebetween obesity in the United States and thegeneral introduction of modified foods).

“Afterward, we did two interviews withtwo TV stations, including TV 2 (which hasone of the largest viewer markets in Poland).We were featured on the 10:00 p.m. news,and I was informed that the story was verypositive,” Siedow commented. “We also ap-peared on a second TV program that airedon Saturday morning on another channel. Ialso just heard that good articles have ap-peared in two magazines.”

The entire last page of the June 8–9Magazyn Trybuny is devoted to the issue ofplant biotechnology and modified foods. Thearticle cited strength in the U.S. regulatorysystem for modified foods, including regula-tory authority of USDA and the Environmen-tal Protection Agency.

Some U.S. officials are hoping that this in-dependent nation, which took the lead in over-throwing Soviet rule that led to freedom forEastern Europe, will embrace an open, sci-ence-based view toward modified foods asit prepares to become a voting member ofthe EU. �

Plant BiotechnologyReduced Pesticide Useby 46 Million Pounds

Plant biotechnology has increased crop yieldssignificantly while reducing use of pesticides inthe United States, the National Center for Food& Agricultural Policy (NCFAP) reported.

The NCFAP report on its study said that foryear 2001 in the United States, six crops cur-rently in the marketplace developed throughbiotechnology—soybeans, corn, cotton, pa-paya, squash, and canola—produced an addi-tional 4 billion pounds of food and fiber onthe same acreage, improved farm income $1.5billion, and reduced pesticide volume by 46million pounds.

Assuming that an additional 21 crops evalu-ated in the study are eventually planted, pro-duction would increase 10 billion pounds, farmincome would improve $1 billion, and pesti-cide volume would be reduced 117 millionpounds. The study evaluated regional produc-tion in 27 of America’s crops, or slightly morethan half of the U.S. crop value.

According to Leonard Gianessi, NCFAP se-nior research associate and senior author of thereport, “As opposed to previous studies, ourwork goes well beyond the traditional agricul-tural commodities and evaluates the impact bio-technology can have on a much wider range ofcrops, including fruits and vegetables. In fact,the study shows every region in the countrystands to benefit from the development of thenew varieties evaluated in this study.”

The report was commissioned with a grantfrom the Rockefeller Foundation and was laterexpanded to cover 40 case studies of 27 cropswith funding from the Biotechnology IndustryOrganization, CropLife America, Council forBiotechnology Information, Grocery Manufac-turers of America, and Monsanto. Urban Sprawl Is Threat to Biodiversity

Wednesday, May 22, 2002—Is biodi-versity in Mexico under threat? Yes, butnot by biotech corn. Emotional excite-ment is clouding the real issues.

First was the publication of a shortpaper in Nature, a respectable Britishscientific journal, showing monarch but-terflies, an insect, might be harmed byeating pollen containing insecticide pro-vided by a type of biotech corn.

Popular wisdom, if not the authors,concluded that the survival of the mi-grating Mexico-based monarchs wastherefore threatened by these plants.

Thus the hand-wringing began, alongwith calls for banning biotech crops be-cause of the apparent threat to biodiver-sity as exemplified by the lovely monarch.

The angst subsided only after a blue-ribbon panel of public scientists con-ducted experiments and published a se-ries of research articles showing that thebiodiversity threat to monarchs frombiotech corn was negligible; that a muchgreater hazard to monarchs was carwindshields. Since no one seemed will-ing to campaign against windshields oncars, the furor died down.

Then came a report arguing that thegenetic integrity of Mexican teosinte,the ancestor of modern corn, was beingcontaminated by genetic material frombiotech corn.

Once again, hand-wringers were outin force, demanding an end to modernplant breeding because this paper, alsopublished in Nature, showed biotechcrops threatened biodiversity in Mexico.

And once again, the angst subsidedwhen Nature disowned the paper lastmonth, agreeing with technical expertsthat the research findings were flawed andthat the paper should not have been pub-lished in the first place.

The experts do agree that corn pollen—whether from a biotech variety or anordinary modern corn hybrid—can matewith its genetic ancestor, teosinte, toadd their genetic material to that of theteosinte.

Such genetic mingling is a naturalevent, so the mere presence of modern cornplants growing in Mexican farm soilvirtually guarantees that, sooner or later,genes from corn will be detected inteosinte.

With all the media coverage and anxi-ety over threats—real or imagined—tobiodiversity in Mexico, a more crucial is-sue is overlooked.

That is, does cross-pollination consti-tute a threat to biodiversity? Is the sur-vival of ancestral populations of teosintethreatened by genetic material from mod-ern corn?

To some, cross-pollination is geneticpollution and the offending corn must bebanned, because, according to the argu-ment, the philandering corn genes dilutethe genetic purity, and therefore thebiodiversity, of the teosinte.

To others, moving genes from plant toplant, even species to species as with cornand teosinte, is completely natural, doesnot constitute a threat to biodiversity and

is a phenomenon we need not be too con-cerned with.

The scientific evidence indicates that ordi-nary pollination between modern corn andolder strains and even teosinte does not con-stitute a significant threat to biodiversity.

Modern corn varieties have been availableto Mexican farmers for half a century. Yes, thereis evidence that some cross-pollination eventshave occurred over that time. And yes, themodern genes can persist in the populations.

But the modern genes do not overtake orcrowd out the ancestral genes.

There is no indication that biodiversity ofteosinte has suffered from the introduction ofmodern corn genes in the mid-20th century.Unless the modern genes provide some ecologi-cal advantage to the recipient teosinte plant,they either eventually die off or remain a tinyproportion of the teosinte’s gene population.

Biotech corn does not cross-pollinate withany greater efficiency than modern nonbiotech

corn. In short, biodiversity in teosinte is notjeopardized by genes or pollen from moderncorn, including biotech varieties.

The real threat to teosinte and other maize-strain populations emanates from humanpopulations, with their increasing demandsfor land and food.

As cities grow, they encroach on the bestfarmland. As remaining farmers attempt tomeet the demand for more food, they replaceolder, less productive varieties with new, high-yielding hybrids. Both activities displace tra-ditional plants.

If society wants to preserve teosinte and oldstrains, we must support well-funded and or-ganized gene banks and reserve lands, wherethe genetic heritage can be protected.

We must establish a regulatory system fornew crop varieties based on their health, safetyand ecological fitness, not on the breedingmethod used.

Finally, we must encourage the cultivationand consumption of biotech varieties withhigher nutritional quality and yields to sat-isfy the demand for more and better foodswithout converting more land.

Biodiversity in Mexico—and elsewhere—is certainly under threat. Emotional distrac-tions accelerate the problem by delaying theimplementation of real solutions.

Biotech Crops, an Environmental Ally

Pullman, Washington, Monday, June 17,2002—Anyone uncertain about the merits ofbiotechnology for food and agriculture shouldread a new report by the National Center forFood and Agricultural Policy, a nonprofit re-search group in Washington, DC.

The food report, released a week ago, notesthat a mere eight varieties of genetically modi-fied crops provided an overall value toU.S. agriculture of $2.5 billion throughhigher yields and lower costs of productionin 2001.

The lower production costs produced a ma-jor environmental benefit as well—reducingpesticide use by 46 million pounds. The re-port can be found on the web at www.ncfap.org and ought to be required reading for ev-eryone involved in the ongoing debate, includ-ing America’s farming community.

The eight biotech varieties included in thisNCFAP analysis were widely disparate. Theyinclude insect-resistant cotton and corn, her-bicide-tolerant soybeans, corn, cotton andcanola and virus-resistant squash and papaya.

The greatest increase in production oc-curred with insect-resistant corn, whichyielded an additional 1.75 million tons. Thegreatest cost savings occurred with herbicide-tolerant soybeans that reduced the use of her-bicides by an estimated $1 billion.

Herbicide-tolerant crops also made it easierfor farmers to adopt a no-till system of farm-ing, which reduces the potential for soil ero-sion in addition to the cost of production.

According to the Conservation TechnologyInformation Service at Purdue University inIndiana, about 25 million acres of soybeans,one-third of the total U.S. soybean crop in

2001, were grown with the no-till method offarming—the most of any crop.

As startling as these numbers may seem,similar gains could be cited for the hundredsof pests and diseases controlled over the past100 or more years by the methods of geneticmodification referred to collectively as “tra-ditional” plant breeding.

These gains account in large part for whywe Americans today spend only about 10percent of our incomes for the highest-qual-ity and most-abundant food in the world.

What is particularly exciting about the Na-tional Center for Food and Agricultural Policyreport is that someone actually put the num-bers together to document what happens orcan happen when pests or diseases are con-trolled using genetic modification.

Despite the proven safety and efficacy ofbiotech crops, misinformation has created lin-gering skepticism. A biotech variety of potatowith one gene that resists the Colorado potatobeetle, and another that resists the potato leafroll virus—two pests currently managed withpesticides—was rejected by the fast-food indus-try out of fear that consumers would considerthese potatoes unsafe to eat.

The National Center for Food and Agri-cultural Policy report pointed out that the ge-netically modified insect/virus resistant po-tato, along with five other biotech crop vari-eties in the pipeline, have the potential to in-crease the net value of Idaho, Oregon andWashington agriculture by an estimated $1.8billion if fully adopted.

At the same time, the new crops could de-crease the amount of pesticide used in thePacific Northwest’s tri-state potato region byabout 20 million pounds annually.

The five genetic modifications in the pipe-

line for Northwest crops are raspberry withresistance to the region’s most devastatingvirus disease, wheat with resistance to twoimportant virus diseases, and potatoes withtolerance to an herbicide and resistance to theverticillium wilt fungus now controlled by soilfumigation.

Like most other pests and diseases still con-trolled by pesticides, none of the four cropdiseases targeted for control by biotechnol-ogy in the Pacific Northwest has been broughtunder control anywhere in the world usingtraditional breeding practices.

While most alternatives to pesticides havetended to make food more expensive, control-ling plant pests and diseases through geneticmodification lowers the cost of production.

Food produced from these crops is no moreexpensive, and eventually becomes less ex-pensive as the lower costs of production arepassed on to consumers.

In addition, crops protected from pests anddiseases leave less fertilizer unused in the soiland return more organic matter to the soil,and the harvested products are almost alwaysof a higher quality than products from cropsdamaged by pests and diseases.

At a time when each day’s news seems tobe dominated by depressing stories, the Na-tional Center for Food and AgriculturalPolicy’s report confirms that we’re still ca-pable of making progress with major benefitsfor the human race.

That’s a bit of refreshing good news forall Americans.

At the ASPB booth, ASPB member RobinBuell answered questions and described thedifferent types of jobs available to those stu-dents interested in the field of plant science.When asked about future plans for college,many of the 11th graders, who were eitherbiology majors or taking advanced placementcourses in biology, expressed an interest in

attending medical school. Robin explainedthat research conducted by plant physiolo-gists is very beneficial and that plant physiol-ogy is actually a sub-field of biology. In addi-tion, Robin stated, “Plant scientists are in-volved in many different types of researchthat include the growth of plants for food,fuel, and, yes, even medicine.”

When asked how and why the partici-pants attend the Career Fair, one studentfrom North Bend Elementary School inBaltimore stated, “It’s fun! The exhibit hallis best because it shows me things that Inever knew about.” The parent of a sixthgrader who attends Fallston Middle Schoolin Baltimore told ASPB staff, “It’s reallywonderful! My son doesn’t know what di-rection to go, so this is great to start at thisage.” Another student, who attends NorthBend Elementary, described an experimentto ASPB staff that involved growing a plantwith a kidney seed. “My sister grew a limabean plant but it died! My experiment isto see if it can grow indoors.”

CALL FOR PROPOSALSWSSA UndergraduateResearch Award—2003

The Weed Science Society of America has developed an Undergraduate Student Re-search Grant designed to encourage and involve exceptional undergraduates in agri-cultural research. Interested faculty members are encouraged to identify potential awardcandidates and discuss the possibility of sponsoring a research project. Awards may beused as a stipend, for research budget expenses (travel, supplies, etc.), to defer fees, todefray living expenses for summer research, or any combination of these items.

AWARD: Up to $1000 for support of undergraduate research to be conductedover a minimum of one quarter/semester during 2003. This awardmay be used to defray the cost of research supplies or as a stipend.Support of a faculty sponsor is required. Awards will be made tothe student, to be administered by the faculty sponsor’s department.

APPLICANT: The applicant is an undergraduate student with a strong interest inWeed Science. Students majoring in all related disciplines may apply.

TO APPLY: Applicants should prepare a 2-3 page research proposal includingname, address, phone number, title, objective, experimental ap-proach, discussion, budget and references. Virtual Reality

As part of its Education Programme, the So-ciety for Experimental Biology (SEB;www.sebiology.org) held a very successfulworkshop on Virtual Learning during its an-nual main meeting in Swansea (Wales, UK)in April this year. Organized in collaborationwith LTSN Bioscience (www.bio.ltsn.ac.uk),we were honored to welcome ASPB memberDr. John Markwell (University of Nebraska—Lincoln) as our plenary speaker. FormerlyASPB’s Education Committee chair, Johntreated the audience to his extensive teachingexperience by speaking on the subject of stu-dent learning. His theories on the dynamicsof learning in the context of both traditionaland virtual environments were very well re-ceived, as was his interactive style of delivery.A summary of the talk is published in the SEBBulletin (July issue) and can also be seen atwww.sebiology.org/bulletin/July2002.

Delivered by other experienced educators,the rest of the workshop talks focused on vir-tual learning and assessment methods. Thesewere followed by two parallel hands-on ses-sions on e-tutoring, including the implicationsof widening access for disabled students. Awider range of posters on innovative teach-ing techniques was presented later in the day,with John Markwell’s poster on the decay ofweb links receiving media attention from theNew Scientist (April 13 issue). Suzanne Moore joined the ASPB staff in April as the institu-tional subscription and fulfillment assistant and will providecustomer service to institutional members, as well as more out-reach to the institutional community. Her experience includesworking at the American Association for the Advancement ofScience to build and market an online database of funding op-portunities for early career scientists in conjunction with theHoward Hughes Medical Institute, directing web site produc-tion at sciencewise.com, product management consulting for acustom software company, and working as a partner in a land-scaping business. She has a degree in earth science from FrostburgState University and hopes to become a certified professionalhorticulturist this fall. �

Simon Harold Wender

ASPB member Simon Harold Wender, 88, died Thursday, March28, in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Dr. Wender was born Sep-tember 4, 1913, in Dalton, Georgia. He earned his bachelor’sand master’s degrees in chemistry from Emory University andhis doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Minnesota.After teaching four years at the University of Kentucky and twoyears as a research chemist at the Texas Agricultural Experi-mental Station, he embarked on a 37-year career at the Univer-

sity of Oklahoma, where he was instrumental in establishing abiochemistry doctoral program and building the department.While at OU, where he became known as the grandpa of bio-chemistry, he authored or coauthored 176 research publications,secured key grants to fund his department, and won numerousachievement awards. He also taught and mentored thousands ofstudents. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, and his children,Joseph Wender, Barbara Rothlein, and Sherri Wender. �

Robert V. Klucas

Robert V. Klucas lost his battlewith cancer on February 28,2002. The following messagespay tribute to his contributionsto science, his service to the uni-versity and the profession, andto his role as mentor and friend.

Three Decades at theUniversity of Nebraska–Lincolnby John Markwell and Terry Riordan

Bob Klucas came to the University of Ne-braska as an assistant professor in 1970 andserved for the next three decades. His col-leagues remember him as altruistic, decent,honest, dependable, ethical, and self-sacrific-ing. He was truly a gentle man with a greatdeal of integrity. He was a supportive fatherto Pete and Gillian and an encouraging hus-band to Carol. Bob made many friends dur-ing his long career and was thought of veryhighly by his peer group as well as his stu-dents. He was a superlative teacher and men-tor for graduate students and postdocs. Hehad high standards for academic achievementand often provided refuge and support forfloundering graduate students.

Bob became head of the Department ofBiochemistry in 1996. His administrative stylewas based on democratic input from all par-ties, a process of conciliation and commitmentto work toward the general good. He contin-ued to serve the university and the depart-ment even after the seriousness of his illnessbecame evident. He spent much of his remain-ing energy supporting and mentoring juniorfaculty and working with his graduate andundergraduate students. Bob truly gave 32years of service to his colleagues and his uni-versity, and he is missed.

A Research Career Fixing Nitrogenby Bob and Linda Shearman

Bob’s research involving symbiotic and asso-ciative nitrogen fixation was both careful andcutting-edge. From his earliest work challeng-

ing a theory posed by a no-table N2-fixation researcher tohis final paper on non-symbi-otic hemoglobins, he insistedon a conservative interpreta-tion of data. He felt stronglythat evidence had to be clearand supported by other ap-proaches before he wouldpropose a theory. Because of

this, Bob’s work has contributed to our bet-ter understanding of the N2-fixation process.For example, his research established the siteof N2-fixation in soybean nodules as being inthe soluble rather than the membrane frac-tion. Later, his research with H. J. Evans dem-onstrated strong evidence supporting the con-clusion that both N2-fixation and acetylenereduction were catalyzed by nitrogenase. Thisinformation led to the basis of a scheme forelectron transport for N2-fixation by soybeannodule bacteroids. His research demonstratedthat two components of nitrogenase, one con-taining iron and the other iron and molybde-num, were necessary for maximum activity.Bob’s research further substantiated the acety-lene reduction assay for N2-fixation assess-ment in free-living and symbiotic systems.

His research with associative nitrogen fixa-tion with temperate grasses was unique. Hedemonstrated that those associations with bac-teria located in the roots or rhizosphere mostclosely resembling symbiotic systems were mosteffective but were still ineffective in derivinguseful levels of nitrogen. The final stages of hisresearch involved the cloning of rice non-sym-biotic hemoglobin, the description of its intra-cellular location and appearance in normal andstress situations and, in collaboration withMark Hargrove, determination of the proper-ties of recombinant rice hemoglobin.

By comparison, other researchers seemedcontent with attempting to attack a muchsmaller portion of the action. Bob’s interestsbroadened based on a desire to understand theconditions that influenced nitrogenase activitybut led into divergent areas of research—am-monium transport, enzyme oxidation state,

nodule senescence, leghemoglobin and itsmodified states, ferric leghemoglobin reductase,non-symbiotic hemoglobins and their function.Through all these years of research, his stan-dards remained high, and many co-authorsand students learned to appreciate his carefulapproach to publications.

Leghemoglobinsby Manuel Becana

I first met Bob Klucas back in 1989. Dr. Klucasalready had a well-established reputation asan excellent scientist and as an expert onleghemoglobin and senescence of legume rootnodules. He had also worked on other im-portant aspects within the field of biologicalnitrogen fixation, such as bacteroid metabo-lism and the essentiality of nickel as a micro-nutrient for grain legumes, but I was particu-larly attracted by his pioneering work on themechanisms of nodules to maintain functionalleghemoglobin. At that time, he had supervisedor was supervising important Ph.D. disserta-tions on that subject. I recall those of Drs.Leonard Saari, Lin Ji, Steve Wood, and Keuk-Ki Lee, among others, all of which found guid-ance and inspiration in Dr. Klucas’s open mindfor science and teaching. I will never forget thewonderful companionship that I found in Bob’slab, as well as the interaction and friendshipof its members with Dr. Gautam Sarath, atthat time already a staff scientist in charge ofthe protein core facility of the UNL. Despitehis heavy teaching duties and faculty meetings,Bob had always time to discuss science withus, to congratulate us on successful experimentsand to continue in the track, or to suggest newones, for those that failed. His very special hu-man qualities, including deep concern aboutour well-being, made him sensitive to our dis-tress. This is why, very soon after my arrivalin his lab, my mentor, Dr. Klucas, became alsomy dear friend. Bob, and his at-that-time stu-dents, taught me generously all that I needed.We purified low molecular mass compoundsthat were able to reduce ferric leghemoglobinand identified some of them as flavins, andwe studied the involvement of free radicals

and the protection by antioxidants in nodulesenescence. Drs. Klucas and Sarath showedme how to work with proteins from nodules.I am particularly indebted to them for theirinsightful comments in seminars and their rig-orous planning of experiments. I have, andwill have forever, fond memories of the after-noons and sunsets spent at Bob’s house andthe dining excursions with him and Carol inthe United States and Spain, where some yearslater they visited us. Bob, we will all miss youas a wonderful mentor and human being.

Leghemoglobin Degradationby Gautam Sarath

I first met Bob when I joined the Biochemis-try Department as a postdoctoral fellow. Ibecame interested in mechanisms that degradeleghemoglobins (Lbs), and it was great to haveone of the world’s experts on Lbs next door.Although our formal collaboration had towait for a few more years, Bob generouslysupplied me with highly purified samples ofthe different soybean root nodule Lbs. Withtime, this interaction evolved into a com-pletely integrated collaboration on variousaspects of plant hemoglobins and root nod-ule metabolism. In early 1993, we had dis-cussed at length the existence of heme oxyge-nase (HO) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS)in plants, particularly root nodules. Althoughour studies failed to reveal the presence of ei-ther enzyme using standard biochemical tech-niques, it was reassuring to note the eventualdiscovery of the two enzymes in plants. Bob’soriginal insights had been proved correct.

In addition to his scientific duties, BobKlucas became the head of the BiochemistryDepartment in 1996 and held this role throughhis illness. His steady guidance and extremelyfair treatment of all his staff were truly remark-able. He was one of the few really good scien-tists I have known who was also fair and de-cent to a fault. He was a strong proponent ofthe public education system and an exceptionalmentor to students of all backgrounds, and hewas willing to see the best in the people whoworked for him. He was also a resource for

many students and postdocs who experienceddifficulties in their individual labs. He nevershut his door on a person and tried his ut-most to build a strong and vibrant department.Bob touched a lot of people during his career.

Plant Non-Symbiotic Hemoglobinsby Raúl Arredondo-Peter

Obtaining the first clone of a plant non-sym-biotic hemoglobin (nsHb) took several yearsof hard work and innumerable problems andobstacles. This situation would disappointalmost anyone, but not Dr. Klucas, who wasalways patient and confident. He frequentlyused to say, “Someday, very soon, we will havethe (nsHb) clone.” His enthusiasm and opti-mism were contagious, and thus we nevergave up. Dr. Klucas had a strong passion forplant hemoglobins. This passion was evidentin his face when I described the richness ofvegetation after a trip I made to the tropicalMexican state of Quintana Roo. His commentto my description was, “If you want, you canbring to the lab any, any legume or other plantfor the isolation of hemoglobins.”

Dr. Klucas was always intellectually satis-fied by any kind of new knowledge, and heenjoyed the period when we analyzed ricehemoglobin genes; however, he was especiallyexcited about the possibility of obtaining arecombinant rice Hb1 for biochemical char-acterization. Bob Klucas was always con-cerned about other people’s welfare. After myreturn to Mexico in 1997, he provided mewith materials to continue working on planthemoglobins, and he called or sent e-mail mes-sages every Saturday morning to continue“traditional” Saturday lab chats with his“Mexican friend,” as he used to call me. BobKlucas was gone too early. However, aperson’s memory is alive if others rememberhim. I will never forget that for several rea-sons our future work aimed to understandplant nsHbs will be possible because of him.

Memories of a Mentor and Friendby Dan Arp, Paul Ludden, andLeonard Saari

We were each fortunate to have had Bob as amentor early in our careers. As an under-graduate next door, a laboratory assistant, anda graduate student, we all benefited fromBob’s remarkably strong but quiet and non-intrusive mentoring style. He allowed eachindividual the space to reach for his or herfull potential. Each of our careers was largelyshaped by those early interactions with Bob.First, he set a standard for excellence. Sec-ond, he provided an environment in whichwe could grow. He was always ready to moveus to the next challenge. Third, he provided asounding board for whatever might be on ourminds, and he always managed to make timefor those conversations. And finally, he servedas a wellspring of advice that was always con-sidered, scholarly, and right on target.

But with Bob, the mentoring didn’t stopwhen you left the lab. Throughout our scien-tific careers, Bob was always there. Not in-terfering, not strong-arming. But his steady-ing influence was always felt. We were ableto spend time with Bob just weeks before hisdeath. Although clearly in the grips of thecancer that would soon take his life, he wasstill our mentor—offering advice, checking tosee how things were going, what new discov-eries we had made, what new directions wewere pursuing.

But somewhere during those years, whilethe mentoring continued, a deep friendshipgrew. And the friendships included our fami-lies. Of course, there were always the scien-tific meetings where we could meet and catchup. In addition to the scientific meetings, wealso found many opportunities to visit Boband his family when we passed through Lin-coln. And then there were the family vaca-tions. We were part of a group that came to-gether one week every five years in locationslike the Grand Tetons of Wyoming, CraterLake in Oregon, the Sawtooth Mountains inIdaho, and Gunnison, Colorado. Our fami-lies spent endless hours hiking, cooking, shar-ing stories, and receiving our regular doses ofadvice and encouragement from our friendand mentor. �

Additionally, over-expression of the H2A-1gene in transgenic plants, or from an incoming T-DNA, results in increased Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of Arabidopsis andBrassica napus. We wish to examine the effect ofover-expressing other histone genes on thetransformation efficiency of recalcitrant plantspecies. This work will have a substantial “basicscience” component as we attempt to define themechanism by which histone gene over-expression increases transformation-competenceof plant cells.
