D ear Community of St. Augustine,

What fruits are we producing? We can ask ourselves this question as we examine our lives as

Christians and as a community as we continue to prepare ourselves to celebrate 50 years of the founding of our Parish.

Last week, I told you that Jesus presents a program of Christian life to us in chapter 6 of St. Luke’s Gospel. Continuing with His teachings and with clear images, we can hear Jesus asking us: What is in your hearts?

If we have envy, gossips, jealousy, rancor, resentment, vengeance… in our hearts, we will be bad Christians. But if we have peace, charity, respect, trust, love, forgiveness, reconciliation, mercy… we will be good Christians. Jesus is clear: "A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.”

Next Wednesday, March 6th, the Lenten Season begins. It will prepare us to celebrate Easter, the Resurrection of the Lord. Ashes will remind us that we should repent of our sins, change, and bear good fruits.

Many members of our Parish have joined the program “Living the Eucharist,” which help us to go through this Lenten path praying with the Word of God, and to deepen our knowledge of the Eucharist. I invite you to attend the Stations of the Cross in the Church, every Friday at 6:45pm in English and at 7:30pm in Spanish. And I hope all of you will come to the Fish Fry or the Soup Dinners every Friday of Lent alternatively.

In this bulletin, you will find information about the activities in preparation for the celebration of our 50th

anniversary, and I hope everybody will be able to participate, collaborate and join us so that together we can continue to bear good fruits!

May God bless you abundantly!

NINE TIPS FOR MAKING THE SEASON MORE MEANINGFUL

Lenten Season Regulations for Fast and Abstinence

Ash Wednesday, March 6, 2019 and Good Friday, April 19, 2019 are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence.

Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.

Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted.

A SEASON OF REFLECTION,

RENEWAL AND PREPARATION

Slow Down – Set aside 10 minutes a day for silent prayer or meditation. It will revitalize your body and your spirit. Read a good book – You could choose the life of a saint, a spiritual how-to, an inspirational book or one of the pope’s new books. Be kind – Go out of your way to do something nice for someone else every day. Get involved – Attend a Lenten lecture or spiritual program. Volunteer at your parish – Whether it’s the parish fish fry or soup dinners, or cleaning the church grounds, it will give you a chance to help others. Reach out – Invite an inactive Catholic to come with you to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday. Pray – Especially for people you don’t like and for people who don’t like you. Tune out – Turn off the television and spend quality time talking with family members or friends. Clean out closets – Donate gently used items to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
