As the Nation's principal conservation agency, the Department of the Interior has responsibility for most of our nationally owned public lands and natural resources. This includes fostering the wisest use of our land and water resources, protecting our fish and wildlife, preserving the environmental and cultural values of our national parks and historical places, and providing for the enjoy ment of life through outdoor recreation. The Department assesses our energy and mineral resources and works to assure that their development is in the best interests of all our people. The Depart ment also has a major responsibility for American Indian reservation communities and for people who live in Island Territories under U.S. administration.

Elevations and Distancesin the United States
The information in this booklet was compiled to an swer inquiries received by the Geological Survey from students-, teachers-, writers-, editors-, pub
lishers of encyclopedias, almanacs and other refer ence books; and people in many other fields of work.
The elevations of features and distances between points in the United States were determined from surveys and topographic maps of the Geological Sur vey or obtained from other sources. Some of this information, compiled from older maps, will be re vised as new surveys are completed. For further information, write to the U. S. Geological Survey, 507 National Center.Reston,Virginia 22092.

Geographic Centers
Because there is no generally accepted definition of a geographic center and no completely satisfactory method for determining it, there may be as many geographic centers of a State or country as there are definitions of the term.
The geographic center of an area may be defined as the center of gravity of the surface, or that point on which the surface of the area would balance if it were a plane of uniform thickness.
Curvature of the Earth, large bodies of water, irreg ular surfaces, and other factors affect the determi nation of center of gravity.
In determining the centers of the States, islands adjacent to their coastlines and large bodies of water on their boundaries were excluded.
The geographic centers and positions listed below should be considered as approximations.

No marked or monumented point has been estab lished by any government agency as the geographic center of either the 50 States, the conterminous United States, or the North American Continent. However, a monument was erected in Lebanon, Kan sas, by a group of citizens who hired engineers to determine the position of the "geographic center" of the United States.
Sometimes confused with the geographic center of the United States is the reference point for all prop erty lines and city, county, State, and international boundaries on the North American Continent that
are tied to the National Triangulation networks of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central Amer ica. This point is Meades Ranch Triangulation station located at latitude 39°13'26.686", longitude 98°32'30.506", about 12 miles north of Lucas, Kan sas. It is the base point or origin of geodetic posi tions and directions in the triangulation net of the United States because it is at the junction of the main east-west transcontinental triangulation arc, which stretches from the Atlantic tothe Pacific Coasts, and the main north-south arc, which follows approxi mately the 98th meridian from the Canadian border to the Rio Grande.
