Mid Year Report 2012/13

Name of Planning and Implementation Group: Dance Education Initiative Date Submitted: 01/23/13 Time Period this form covers: 09/01/12 – 06/30/13 Lead Alliance Team Member: Nancy Ng and Ashlie Kirbys

Members of Group (please include email addresses):

Name / Organization Program Position / Email Nancy Ng, Director of Community Engagement, Luna Dance Institute, [email protected] Annika Presley, Director of Education, AXIS Dance Company, [email protected] Avilee Goodwin, Dance Specialist, Alameda County, [email protected] Cheryl Eccles, pre-K Dance Educator, Berkeley and Oakland , [email protected] Heidi Sawicki, PE/Dance Teachers, PUSD, [email protected] Ashlie Kirby, Teaching Artist, Luna Dance Institute, [email protected] Valerie Gutwirth, Dance Specialist, BUSD, [email protected] Linda Carr, Dance Teachers, AHA Berkeley High Carolyn Carr, ACOE rep Danae Rees, Co-President, CDEA, [email protected] What this group planned to accomplish (anticipated outcomes from 2012-13 Workplan):

Items below taken from objectives in workplan:

1. Identify dance programming happening in Alameda County (carried over from 2011-12 year)

2. Develop network to support Alameda County dance artists, educators and providers

3. Promote value of dance in Alameda County to a wider audience (from parents to decision-makers) Progress to date: Objective One: This group met 1/23/13 and decided how to implement at survey that will be administered to school districts in Alameda County. The survey will be implemented in phases. The first phase will be to identify one key person in each district that a DEI member will call and ask a short series of questions. In this conversation, the DEI member will also frame the work of ACOE AALL and how the DEI relates to this.; and ask for potential survey respondents for the 2nd phase of this survey which will probably be online. DEI members will also direct survey respondents to the Art is Ed. Website. Some of the survey information we wish to ultimately find our includes: Is dance happening in your district? When does it happen (in-school/after-school)?; Who provides it and what is the fte? (certificated personnel, TA, arts group); How much do the students get? (ongoing for whole year, 10-week residency, which grades); What kind of dance? (cultural, folk, creative, etc.)? How is it funded? ; What is program longevity? The first phase will be administered in February. DEI will meet in March to review data and decide next steps. The ultimate goal is to create a map of dance edu. for ACOE.

Page 10: Arts alliance structure and reports

DEI needs this from ACOE office: names of one key person in outlying districts (particularly south county) we contact); technical support once the survey is online. We would like to link online survey through Art Is website and use ACOE IT to help us analyze data and create map. Carolyn Carr told us she would help with this. Objective Two: DEI will use dance education events already scheduled to network dance educators and support survey data collection – this includes CDEA conference 2/02/13 (many of the DEI members will be there); and Luna Arts Education Forum April 20th. Objective Three: DEI members looked at ACOE ArtIs website. Many folks had not seen this yet. Members will post on website so that WHAT IS happening in Alameda County can be made visible as advocacy tool for dance education. DEI needs this from ACOE IT: ability to upload video link to web postings. We also would like the new AALL coordinator Ray Kagan attend our March meeting scheduled for 3/13/13 Wed. 4-6 pm at Luna.

What this group plans to accomplish (anticipated outcomes): Build on the success of the first year’s institute by:

• Refining and starting the RFP process earlier • Providing orientation to RFP process and workshop on presentation skills • Streamlining the online registration process • Developing marketing plan in the fall of 2012 • Increasing outreach for substantial sponsorships to raise more funding

Progress to Date

where above members brainstormed themes, strands, plenary speakers & artists, and ideas for mini courses.

Strand 2 Citizenship and the Environment

Strand 3 Engaging our Creative Power

Understanding Goal How can we create safe and respectful human relationships to realize the potential of our classrooms and communities?

Understanding Goal How can we take responsibility for the urgent issues of our natural environment?

Understanding Goal How can we harness the courage and innovation necessary for each and every child to succeed?

Progress to Date (continued)

• An all hands Alliance meeting will be held Jan 25 as an orientation for staff about planning for registration (online & onsite), marketing, design/print, faculty roles, and social media presence.

• A contract is in process with Chabot Space and Science Center • A contract has been established between Teaching Artists Organized and ACOE to

manage registration and volunteers. • A “Registration Open” Eblast has gone out to entire Alliance list. The Alliance website

has been updated. • The RFP Eblast is scheduled to go out Jan 29. Proposals are due Feb 25. • Mini courses can now be for one session or a series of two or three sessions across the

three days. • The format of Reflection Groups is being reconsidered. Current thinking is to extend the

mini course to 2 hours and use the last half hour for reflection. Two faculty would attend each mini course and facilitate the reflection process with the mini course presenter for the last half hour.

• The Wine Reception is being moved from the middle to last day of the Institute for a celebratory closing.

• Fundraising has began when Carolyn did a pitch for sponsorships for 14K at the recent P&I meeting at Berkeley Rep.
