Dear Antonio Park Families,
Student Leadership Assembly Presentations Monday 8th Feb. JSC Monday 15th Feb. Prep Certificates & School Captains Monday 22nd Feb. House and Specialist Captains & Environmental Leaders Monday 29th Feb. Peacemakers Our 2016 year once again promises to be a productive and eventful year. Antonio Park Primary School and its community is committed to fostering:
Connectedness: Building a strong bond be-tween all school community members (students, parents & staff) and with our wider community.
Relationships:-When people know each other better, the more aligned their expectations become.
Harmony: - Our children will be safer and happi-er if we are able to connect with each other.
Values: - When our school values of Empathy, Responsibility, Resilience, Independence and Confidence are shared and lived by us as adults in our school community they will be transmitted to the children. Our actions and in-teractions show children what we value.
Civics and Citizenship:- Children who see their parents making positive contributions to society are much more likely to do so themselves.
APPS prides itself in the above through our many won-derful events and community activities such as:
Parent Information Nights,
Parent/Teacher discussions,
Fete
Extra-curricular activities such as choir, aerobics, swimming, camp

Food Allergy Awareness As we all know, the amount of children with allergic reactions is increasing at an astonishing rate in today’s society. At Antonio Park Primary School, we are constantly updating our alert procedures and our training so that we can provide the best possible care for all of our students. The start of the year is a good time to refocus community attention to the serious nature of allergies with a quick
review on allergies and anaphylaxis: Anaphylaxis is a severe and sudden allergic reaction when a person is exposed to an allergen. Common allergens for children in-
clude: Eggs, peanuts, tree nuts such as cashews, cow's milk, fish and shellfish, wheat, soy, insect stings, medications. Symptoms include:
noisy or difficult breathing including wheezing or persistent coughing
swelling of the tongue
swelling or tightness in the throat
difficulty talking such as a hoarse voice
loss of consciousness and/or collapse
pale pallor and floppiness in young children.
Here at Antonio Park P.S. we implement strategies and processes to ensure a safe and supportive environment for students at risk of anaphylaxis. Students and parents in each class with an anaphylactic student will have been notified by letter of the strategies in place to reduce the risk of ex-
posure to anaphylactic triggers. At Antonio Park P.S. we have:
an anaphylaxis management plan for each student diagnosed at risk of anaphylaxis
prevention strategies covering incidents in the school setting
an anaphylaxis policy
regular training and updates for school staff in recognising and responding to anaphylactic reactions including competently administering
an adrenaline auto-injector (such as EpiPen®/Anapen®). If you have a child who has an existing Anaphylaxis Action Plan at school, please check when the plan expires as they are only cur-rent for 12 months. If the plan is due to expire, take the opportunity to organise an updated plan to give to your child’s teacher at your parent/teacher discussion.
Medication If medication needs to be administered to your child during school hours, you will need to fill out a medical authority form which details written advice providing directions for appropriate storage and administration. This form can be collected from the office. The medication
must be:
in the original bottle or container clearly labelled with the name of the student, dosage and time to be administered
within its expiry date
We encourage parents/guardians to consider whether they can administer medication outside the school day, such as before and after school
and before bed. If you have any questions about our processes and policies regarding allergies and anaphylaxis or medications, please contact me at school.
Emergency Management Plan On Tuesday, we conducted an evacuation drill, as per our regular EMP schedule. This time the school went to our off site location. We were very im-
pressed with the efficiency of the students and staff, and especially the Preps! Have a great week! Annette and Tim

Hello Level 2 Parents, We have had yet another great week in Level 2! We have all settled in well and are enjoying our time in our classrooms. Our students have begun writing excellent recounts about their holiday and weekend ad-ventures. We have been working very hard on drafting our Orientation, Events and Conclusions. We can’t wait to see the finished pieces and display them in our grades. This week we are beginning our unit for the term ‘Now and Then’. If you have any useful books or interesting artefacts please send them in with your child. We will also be having a Grandparents Day this term, stay tuned for dates! This has been a huge hit in the past and something to look forward to!
Please refer to the Foundation newsletter for Level 1 news.
This week in numeracy we will be starting to learn more about skip counting, you may like to help us practise counting by 2s, 5s, 10s at home, or for an extra challenge even 3s or 4s! Some dates for parents to note down; Fun for Ones – 22nd March (straight after school) Grade 2 Sleepover – 23rd March Notices will be coming home about these events in the coming weeks! A very big well done and thank you to the students who have already brought along these things. Family Life Night: A Family Life Night will be held at school on Thursday 3rd March with more details and time sent out soon. Thank you! Level 3 Team
We have enjoyed a fantastic start to the new year with all students settling in extremely well and displaying positive work habits. It has been great to observe the Year 4 students assisting their Year 3 classmates in and out of the classroom. Well done everyone! Term 1 Inquiry topic. Our Term 1 Inquiry topic this term is titled ‘What is a Cooperative Communi-ty?’ To enhance this topic and the students’ understanding we have organ-ised an excursion to the Melbourne museum on Wednesday 17th February. We would appreciate all payments and consent forms for the excursion to be returned by the end of this week. Behaviour Management / Code of Conduct: Our Code of Conduct booklet is being discussed in classrooms and a con-sistent behaviour management approach has been discussed by the team and is being implemented in all classrooms. This is linked in with our Re-storative Practices and the ‘You Can Do It’ program which is operating throughout the school. This area will be discussed further at our Information night.
Semester 1 JSCs
What’s Happening in Level 4?
This week in Level 4 we have been continuing to find out more about our classmates and putting our best efforts into supporting each other and working cohesively in our classrooms. Information night is next Monday 15th February at 7.45pm. We are all looking forward to meeting our students’ parents. If you need child minding please remember to send back the reply slip provided. Many students have been asking when homework will start. It is great to see so many enthusiastic students. We will be starting homework after the Level 4 Information Night, on Monday 15th February, where we will be explaining homework and expectations. We encourage all students to read for at least 20 minutes each night. Notices have gone home about classroom parent liaisons and we have had a wonderful response. If you have not already returned your class contact list form could you please do so as soon as possible so we can make a list up for each classroom liaison to use. Communicating what is happening in Level 4 is very important to us and a great way for every-one to feel connected.
We are looking forward to working with classroom helpers and we will begin this program in term 2 once the students have settled in to class-room routines. The swimming sports for Level 4 are on next Thursday 18th February. This is a great day for the students to support their peers and celebrate in the achievements of their houses. It would be great to see the stu-dents dressed in their house colours for the day. Our Mind and Body incursion is on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd Feb-ruary. Please return the permission forms and payments by Monday 15th February. We were thrilled to see so many students turn up for team training on Wednesday morning. It was lovely to see everyone enthusiastically prac-tising skills and chatting about the upcoming game. Bonnie, Christine, Jana, Lauren and Cathy

It has been a great start to term. It’s been lovely to see all the new students have settled in well. This week we have been using lots of recyclables for craft. The children love using their imagination to create whatever they like. If you are able to help by donating old boxes, jars, magazines or other bits and pieces we would we really appreciate it. Outdoors the most popular games have been tennis and cricket, indoors we have lots of construction toys and games for everyone, this week marbles have been popular as well. In the kitchen the children have made a chocolate cake and we also experimented with a coconut slice and added chocolate and jam, which turned out great!
