Dear Antonio Park Families,
WWW OW!!!!OW!!!!OW!!!!
Thank you to our wonderful families
and friends who supported our
walkathon...
APPS community has raised the amazing amount of
$11,937 to date. We will be able to build our new
playground. The money left over will go towards building
an attractive fence at the end of the basketball court, so
balls don't go rolling down towards the oval nor the new
playground. This fence will be designed in such a way
that the end section/s nearest the hall can be removed
for the fete.
An enormous thank you goes to Danni Harvey our
Level 3 teacher/JSC leader, Kylie Sandow who is one of
our parents, our PAG group and the wonderful band of
smiling helpers/walkers on the day.
Prep Information Night
Next Thursday evening we will be holding a prep
Information session for mums and dads of our 2014 prep
students. This session follows and complements a
wonderful transition program that has been held during
Term 3 and 4 for our kindergarten children.
Working Bee
Our next working bee will be held on Friday 29th
November. We look forward to having as many hands on
deck just for a few hours to give a final spruce up to our
wonderful school.

Aussies of the week
Congratulations to everyone celebrating a
birthday this week.
Assistant Principals
What’s Happening In Level 1?
Level 1 students have a fantastic new writing display up so make sure you have a look at the outstanding quality of work we have been doing! The students wrote letters to our principals and we were all so proud of the fantastic questions the students asked. This week Level 1 students have been exploring the letter blend ‘ing’ and also ‘ea’. Students have been brainstorming many words with these spelling patterns. They have been introduced to the writing genre Explanation. As we have been learning about animals and how they survive and adapt in their environments students will be explaining how animals use their colours (camouflage) to survive. This week in maths students explored and developed their knowledge of direction and
location. Students have enjoyed working with a partner to verbally describe where they need to move and placing different objects in certain places fol-lowing peer instructions. Unfortunately due to bad weather we had to postpone the Melbourne Zoo excursion on Wednesday. We will be rescheduling for next week so fingers crossed that the weather will be kind to us and we can enjoy a lovely day in the sunshine. Level 1 team Lauren, Stacey, Elizabeth and Lauren.
Parent Helpers Throughout the year, many parents/grandparents at APPS help around
the school in so many ways. We love to have our helpers in our rooms with our learning and teaching. The teachers and students enjoy chatting with them all and it is great to
have other adults in our rooms. We have many helpers in lots of our school curriculum areas and events: PE, art, music, sport days, incursions, excursions production, fete and
many more! By having people assisting at our school, we all reap the benefits and
makes for a fantastic School Community.
As our way of saying THANKYOU, the staff would like to invite our parent helpers to a special ‘end of year’ morning tea. This will be on Monday 9thDecember, at 9.50, following assembly. The staff will be busy baking, so we would love to see lots of helpers at the
morning tea.
All students will be writing special invitations over the next few weeks…please let us know if you will be coming along, for catering
purposes.
We look forward to catching up with everyone and enjoying a chat
to celebrate a great year. PHILIPPINES CRISIS
It has been sad to hear of the devastation in the Philippines over the past week. It is hard to imagine what it must be like for the people over there. We would like to assist in some way and donate to the Red Cross as our way of helping. Along with the PAG, we have decided to donate our 5 CENT
FRENZY money for the next two weeks. Please add to the jar in the office foyer…5 cents or
any loose change would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your support Jan & Annette
CYBERSAFETY AT A.P.P.S. Internet safety presentation helps children stay safe online
Young people today are immersed in digital technologies. They use the internet and mobile phones to socialise, study, exchange ideas and play. While online activity has many benefits, there are also risks. To help your children stay safe online, Antonio Park Primary School is hosting a Cybersmart Outreach—Internet Safety Awareness presentation. Designed for parents, teachers and students, this presentation is provided by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (the ACMA) as part of a national program of cybersmart initiatives. The Cybersmart Outreach—Internet Safety Awareness presentation is thorough and non-technical. It covers a range of issues including:
the ways children use the internet and emerging technologies
potential risks for children online, such as cyberbullying, identity theft,
inappropriate contact and exposure to inappropriate content
tips to help children stay safe online.
The presentation is conducted by an ACMA Cybersmart trainer and is free of charge. Antonio Park P.S. is committed to helping students develop appropriate behaviours when using digital technologies, both at school and home. Our program of internet safety initiatives includes:
Inside Out Education Cybersafety workshops
Internet safety embedded in all curriculum programs
Student Acceptable Use Policy
The Cybersmart Outreach—Internet Safety Awareness presentation will be held on: Wednesday 27th November.
Student presentations will be held during the day
Staff presentation after school
Parent presentation at 6.30pm that evening
We strongly recommend that you view the interactive resource at: http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/whbts
A notice for the parent presentation was sent home this week. Please fill out the expression of interest form if you will be attending.
Regards,
Annette and Jan
All the Level 2 teachers have been very impressed with the amazing and informative projects that have been brought in this week by our clever students! It is fantastic to see all of the learning that has occurred at home and the effort put into these pieces. The students will be presenting their projects to their grade over the next few weeks. We have received some great letters in response to our formal letters that we sent during our Transactional Unit. We have received lots of information and facts to help us with our Under the Sea unit. We have completed our unit on Transactional Writing and this week we will be starting Explanation Writing. The letters and invitations we have written this term are been displayed in the classrooms and on the Prep Writing
boards, come and have a look at our fantastic work! Our class blogs have been a hit with all students! It is so great to see everyone using Social Media in a fun and safe way. Each class has enjoyed reading and replying to posts. A big thank you to Sophie and Miss Ewan for organising this for us! Our excursion to the Melbourne Aquarium is fast approaching, please continue to send in your permission envelopes. Payments can be made at the office. Have a great week, The Level 2 Team
What’s Happening In Level 4?
What’s Happening In Level 2?
What is Happening In Level 3?
The Level 4 students are loving reading all about the gold era in Australia. What a different way of life it would have been for children on the gold fields in the 1800s! We are now moving on to an exploration of the Eureka Stockade and work on our Gold Expo in December. Lots going on!
Level 4 Swimming Program Only two more sessions of swimming this year, with a single session on this Friday and a double session on Friday 22nd November. The program is going really well and it is great to see the students enjoying their time in the water. Students back at school have been working
on a range of different activities, including a mapping task and comprehension based work. Year 6 Graduation Year 6 students have been bringing in their photos for their graduation slideshow and Mr Newman is doing a fabulous job putting these together. Any last minute photos need to be in this week, or students will not have them included in the slideshow on the night or on the DVD.
Year 6, 2014 Thank you to the parents who came and sized their children for Year 6 jackets and polos. If you did not size your child, we will have approximated their size for you. Order forms and further details will be sent out next week. Year 5 students will have the opportunity to vote on their final design very shortly. * Reminder to Year 5 students: school captain speeches are in Week 8 of this term. Literature Contracts Reading at home each night for literature contracts will free up time at school to complete activities. Many students are well on their way to finishing the contract, but it is important that good time management is used to complete all tasks. Keep working hard guys! Kate, Mitch, Clive, Rachel and Karen Level 4 Team
Homework The level three teachers have been very impressed with the outstanding homework that our students are completing. We have seen fantastic PowerPoint presentations, posters, Animoto presentations and creative book work. If you would like to take a look at the amazing standard of homework that is being produced in Level Three, please have a look at just some pieces being displayed in the hall. Super work Level Threes! Camp We are all very excited to head off to camp next Wednesday. We hope you have made sure you have everything on your checklist and you have been practising packing your bags! This week you should have received a permission slip for students to
be able to watch a PG movie at camp. This provides the students with a wider variety of movies to select from for our camp. Students will be under teacher supervision when watching the PG rated movie and any movie shown will be family orientated. If you give your child permission to watch the PG rated movie whilst on camp please sign and return the permission slip to your child’s teacher by tomorrow (15th November). Please make sure any medication is clearly labelled (including the dosage) and delivered to your child’s teacher on the morning of camp. Have a fantastic week! Bonnie, Jana, Danielle, Natalie, Rachel and Alec
Environmental News?
WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH: Week 2 It was fabulous to see many students and their families walking to school over the last few weeks. The Environmental Leaders are eagerly recording the number of students who walk to school each day from their own grades. A weekly prize is up for grabs for the class with the most walkers. Congratulation to last week’s winning class, 4KT, who can look forward to receiving their box of delicious fruit at assembly this week. The lovely people at VicHealth Walk to School also run weekly competitions throughout November. If you would like more information on any of these checkout the Walk to School website http://www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au/
Being safe when we are walking to school Young children often need assistance from adults to develop the skills to be safe in traffic. It may be hard for them to judge the speed of vehicles and their peripheral vision is still developing. Their height often makes it difficult for them to see cars and it is difficult for a motorist to see them. Parents, please help your children to choose safe locations to cross the road and to STOP, LOOK, LISTEN,THINK. If you live too far from school, try parking a few streets away and walk the rest of the distance.
There are 40 km/h speed zones in the streets around our school. Parents, it is essential that if you are driving that you adhere to these limits that have been implemented to improve the safety for students. Cars travelling at lower speeds have more time to react to incidents such as children stepping out onto the road. Before parking, please consider the safety of your child and other children in the area.
Rachel, Cathy, The Environmental Leaders and Sustainable Schools Team
Lost Property
The pile of unnamed clothes is building up in Lost Property (located in the Disabled toilet just past the office). Please check for any of your child’s lost school and casual clothing as soon as possible, as we will soon be donating unclaimed items to our school second hand uniform
shop. Please remember that named items can be easily returned to your child. Thank you.
Production DVDs and Blu Rays
are available at the office for collection.
Kids and Exercise
Everyone can benefit from regular exercise. Kids who are active will:
have stronger muscles and bones
have a leaner body because exercise helps control body fat
be less likely to become overweight
decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes
possibly lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels
have a better outlook on life
Besides enjoying the health benefits of regular exercise, kids who are physically fit sleep better and are better able to handle physical and emotional challenges — from running to catch a bus to studying for a test.
CAITLIN 1LF
For understanding peoples needs and helping others whenever you can. It is great to see you lending a hand to those
who need it and putting others before yourself.
CORBY 2SP For being a wonderful friend to everyone at Antonio Park. It is fantastic to see you helping and supporting other students. We love that you go out of your way to make sure everyone has a friend to play with and feels included in the yard. at snack and
lunch.
Georgia 4RF
For demonstrating the ERRIC values by encouraging younger students on the day of the
‘walk a thon’. You always show initiative and leadership in and outside of the classroom.
Georgia 3JD For showing initiative during Library sessions and being a good friend.
What an amazing result we have had from our first ever APPS walk-a-thon! We couldn’t be happier with all the support from the students, staff and parents and because of the hard work and fundraising from everyone we have now reached our target and can begin the process of building our new Junior Playground. Next week the JSCs will be meeting to discuss things like the colour of the new playground and look over our initial design to see exactly what we are going to get...how exciting! Thank you again to everyone that helped make this possible.
