TSG SENDS (February 11, 2021)

Army Medicine Family,

According to a Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) memorandum dated Feb. 4, “We must defeat the coronavirus disease and defend the force against COVID-19 while protecting our Nation. COVID-19 is one of the deadliest threats our Nation has ever faced.” The memo provided updated guidance on the use of face coverings and masks, social distancing, and full compliance with guidance provided by the CDC.

“Effective immediately, all individuals on military installations and all individuals performing official duties on behalf of the Department from any location other than the individual’s home, including outdoor shared spaces, will wear masks in accordance with the most current CDC guidelines. Individuals must consistently wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth that is within current guidance from the CDC and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration,” the memo added.

As we work to get more people vaccinated, our Nation appears to be moving in the right direction in its defense against the pandemic and it’s nice to share some good news. Overall, there is positive reporting in the weekly average of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths. Numbers may fluctuate in some areas from week to week, but many states continue in a downward or improving trajectory as more Americans get vaccinated.

As of Feb. 9, COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. totaled 467,312. APHC reports decreases for the week in the number of cases down 19.5% and a slight increase in the average number of deaths per day at 0.3%. The current seven-day average for new COVID-related hospital admissions is down 16.3% and new admissions continue to decline in virtually all states and jurisdictions.

Currently, more than 59 million total vaccine doses have been distributed and more than 32.3 million people have received at least one dose (9.6% of the US population). While this news is promising, we can’t rest, as this pandemic is far from over. Please, continue to maintain your safety protocols, such as wearing a face covering, watch your distance from others, and wash your hands. And most importantly, get vaccinated when it’s your turn.

We continue to celebrate Black History Month and recognize the many contributions and sacrifices that African-American leaders have made in our communities and our Nation. These exceptional men and women remind me of how important leader development is and how we must strengthen and foster it to build unit cohesion.

On Feb. 17, the next virtual Leadership Lecture Series will be held at 09:30 a.m. (EST) on MS Teams. We will host Retired MG Elder Granger, a former AMEDD senior leader, as our guest speaker who will discuss his perspective on leadership and leader development. This event supports The Surgeon General’s Leader Development Program for OneStaff to build agile and adaptive leaders for today and tomorrow’s operating environment. CSM Hough and I welcome and encourage your participation. In addition, there will be a Resilient Leader Series discussion led by CH (LTC) Susan Caswell for the Senior Leaders and MEDCOM Spouses Group on Feb. 16, at 1:30 p.m. (EST). The title of the discussion is “The Five Love Languages.” All are invited at: https://join.freeconferencecall.com/taegonlee

I extend a hearty “congratulations” to COL Clint Murray on publishing in the peer reviewed medical journal, Military Medicine, his article on “Responding to COVID-19 Among U.S. Military Units in South Korea: The U.S. Forces Korea’s Operation Kill the Virus”. COL Murray is a brilliant physician whose leadership qualities enable him to stand out as an AMEDD leader and author. Link: https://doi.org/10.1093/milmed/usab013

Finally, this weekend is an extended weekend in honor of President’s Day. Be prudent if you travel, especially if you are driving in winter weather and please follow all COVID-19 safety protocols. We want you and your family to stay safe and stay healthy! We are all an important part of the Army Medicine team.

Army Medicine is Army Strong!

TSG SENDS (February 19, 2021)

Army Medicine Family,

I want to start by saying that my thoughts are with our staff who has been affected by the freezing temperatures as well as power and water outages in Texas and all across the country. I know it has been a tough week and your dedication to mission and supporting our Soldiers and beneficiaries is something I continue to be in awe of. Each of you has shown resiliency and determination as we continue our battle against the weather and COVID-19 simultaneously. Please continue to be safe while the nation’s services begin to come back online. Each of you is an important part of the Army Medicine team.

This week we continue to see light at the end of the tunnel regarding COVID-19. Both the 7-day moving case average of the virus and new COVID-related hospital admissions are down more than 20% compared to the previous week.

We are continuing with the vaccination efforts. Last week, our Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin authorized nearly 5,000 service members to staff Federal Emergency Management Agency vaccination centers across the Nation. As part of our on-going support of the whole-of-government effort, Army Medicine personnel are deploying to support this mission.

Also, the Army is hosting an Army Senior Leader Town Hall on Monday, February 22, at 9:45 a.m. (EST). The acting Under Secretary of the Army Christopher Lowman, the Army Inspector General Lt. Gen. Leslie Smith, and the Deputy Director of the Army Public Health Center Dr. Steven Cersovsky will join Command Sgt. Maj. Hough and myself on the panel. The topic will be the vaccination itself. We will be want to encourage you to “get the shot”, when available, by providing information and addressing your questions and concerns. We want to spread the word that everyone needs to be vaccinated against COVID-19 because we know it will save lives. This is a Facebook Live event at: www.Facebook.com/usarmy/live

The Federal Retail Pharmacy Program for COVID-19 Vaccination is getting under way. The program is a collaboration between the federal government, states and territories, and 21 national pharmacy partners and independent pharmacy networks across the United States to increase access to COVID-19 vaccination. This increased access includes our beneficiaries. Those interested in getting the shot through the program should visit the following link for additional information and a list of participating national pharmacies: www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/retail-pharmacy-program/index.html

I’d like to commend the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence (MEDCoE) for their continued excellence in training during the Pandemic. The MEDCoE along with the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command marked a significant milestone in the fight against COVID-19. Together, they have transported 10,000 Advanced Individual Training Soldiers into and out of the training pipeline since COVID-19 mitigation measures began in April 2020. They reached the milestone during 1 of 5 air and ground movements in support of over 250 Soldiers on February 11, on Joint Base San Antonio’s (JBSA) Kelly Field. MEDCoE has completed more than 260 of these moves in the last nine months since the COVID-19 pandemic began. These Soldiers are moving out to perform in medical roles throughout the world. According to the Commanding General, MG Dennis LeMaster, they have not shipped one sick Soldier. Excellent work team!

Finally, on behalf of our Chaplain, we invite you to attend CH Caswell’s presentation of “The Five Love Languages” on February 19, at 1:30 p.m. (EST). The One Staff personnel Meeting invitation is at: https://einvitations.afit.edu/inv/index.cfm?i=587676&k=0769450F7C5.

Thanks for all you do!

We are still in this together! Stay safe. Stay healthy!
