TSG SENDS (July 17, 2020)

Army Medicine Family,

Thank you again for your diligence as we navigate these unusual times. We never rested, yet we are back in “respond” mode with regard to our invisible enemy — the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic. Team, what I said in March is true today. We must all practice the disciplines of handwashing and social and physical distancing. And we must continue use of our face coverings even if some local jurisdictions have eased their requirement to wear them. We are still in this together — even while most of us remain apart.

We are continuing to serve our nation in our communities — particularly in California and Texas. Urban Augmentation Medical Task Force (UAMTF) 627 provided a total of 2,365 hours of clinical support to the San Antonio Health System. And the 98th Combat and Operational Stress Control is now sending in Behavioral Health Teams. Awesome work Team!

I thank Marshall Williams, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Manpower and Reserve Affairs) for his discussion of last Thursday’s leadership session. Will provided us with many honest, thought-provoking comments that come out of his life’s experiences. With social protest continuing around the country regarding racial inequity, we need to continue to understand that there remain old wounds that are not healed.

In this regard, I again mention Project Inclusion—the new initiative of the Secretary of the Army and Chief of Staff—which aims to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion across the force and build cohesive teams. The effort will include a series of worldwide listening sessions with Soldiers and civilians and an examination of possible racial disparity in military justice cases. The key component of Project Inclusion is the word “listen.” I ask you to give the word “listen” a high priority as we discuss historical and ongoing issues of race.

Some of you may have heard that to protect the safety of all involved, this week the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) announced that the 2020 Annual Meeting scheduled for October 13 – 16 will be hosted in the virtual space. While normally this is an annual reunion for the Army Family, I encourage you to experience the sessions in the virtual space.

Next week I’ll be joining GEN (Ret) Carter Ham, the President and CEO of AUSA, for AUSA’s Noon-Report webinar. It will be live at ausa.org/events/noon-report-dingle on July 29. I hope you’ll join me!

This week, I close with the words of our Army Chief of Staff, “Respect this virus!” Protect yourselves, your family and the force.

Army Medicine is Army Strong!

Stay safe out there!

CHAP TALK - THE POWER OF COMMUNITY (July 27, 2020)

July 29th marks the 245th Chaplain Corps Anniversary. Chaplains have served Soldiers and families since the inception of the Army providing religious support in garrison and abroad. The long history of the Chaplain Corps has seen many changes through the years, including the installment of the Chief of Chaplain’s Office July 15, 1920, which marks the 100th Anniversary this month. Chaplains have deployed during every national conflict providing religious support for Soldiers, civilians, and family members building community through unit engagement and chapel programs.

As we settle in to our new normal of life during a pandemic, we are learning to practice physical distancing, avoid crowds, and limit our social engagements. A Keller Group poll in mid-April revealed that 72% surveyed indicated they would be at the “breaking point” if the “stay at home order” continues through mid-June. 100% indicated they will “snap” if stay at home orders last six months. Though most of the stay at home orders have lifted, it is becoming clear that we may be in this protective posture for the long haul. It is remarkable how resilient we are in our ability to adapt and overcome. It is not until we are tested that we truly know our strength.

We are beginning to understand more clearly that physical distancing does not mean social disengagement. Many are staying connected across the miles or across town through social media, texting, and video calls. Through the ingenuity of Microsoft Teams and other media our Army is connecting in new ways. Perhaps connection can also come from quieting down, sitting still, and growing comfortable in the current situation that we find ourselves in. In his book, The Art of Solitude, author Stephen Batchelor gathers wisdom from various thinkers about befriending aloneness, he says, “We can learn to actually create a solitude in which we feel at home and grounded.” He suggests solitude is a practice, not a situation. Solitude is relevant to all of us – whether we’re living alone and feeling isolated, navigating the world as an essential worker, or living in close quarters with family members or roommates.

He continues, “There’s a danger of thinking of solitude as some kind of place within us. When you start to think of it as a practice, as a training that might include mindfulness, reflection, meditation, quiet reading of wisdom literature, for 20 minutes a day, we start refining, shaping the contours of our interiority.” Perhaps this is a way to reframe our current situation. Rather than isolating or obscuring us, physical distancing and solitude may allow us to be in deeper and more meaningful relationship to ourselves, our meditative practice, and to those around us.
