President's Page'---------------------

Greetings once again! As 1994 winds down, it is my hope that all of your research projects have been successful and that all of your genealogical disappointments have been minor. After some 30 years in this type research, and 25 years working in a public archives, I have found two extremely useful tools that I try to always carry with me when I go on a genealogical road trip: patience and courtesy, I always try to allow myself enough time to adequately read and understand the records I am using and try to show a smiling face and a patient frame of mind to those who are servicing records I am using, In other words, keep on looking and keep on smiling,

I have found another key to successful genealogical research for me has been "Continuing Education," ~ven old hands at this business always find something new to learn, Frequent the genealogical section of your local library or archives, Keep an eye on the book review section of publications such as The Arkansas Family Historian. Try your very best to take advantage of each and every opportunity to learn, learn, and learn about the lives of your ancestors and the records they generated, The successful researcher is a knowledgeable researcher, If you have finished all of your research or find yourself at a standstill, VOlunteer to help others with their research at your local library, historical society, archives, or LOS Family History Library,

Speaking of educational opportunities, here are some that you might like to take advantage of: our neighbors to the north, the Ozarks Genealogical Society, p, 0, Box 3494, Springfield, MO 65808, have scheduled for September 16-1 7, 1994, a workshop featuring Elizabeth Shown Mills, Our own society, the Arkansas Genealogical Society, will present the noted Myra Vanderpool Gormley at our annual Fall workshop, September 30 and October 1, 1994, at Fayetteville, AR. A detailed description of the program will be found elsewhere in this issue, The Federation of Genealogical SOCieties, p, 0, Box 3385, Salt Lake City, UT 84110, is presenting another 01 their week-long genealogical conferences on October 12-15, 1994, in Richmond, VA It will be my privilege to present

two new lectures there, I hope to have the pleasure of meeting many of our AGS members from the East Coast. The annual fall workshop of the Dallas, TX, genealogical society will be November 19 1994, in Dallas, Contact Linda S, Rogers, 40; Kimberly Rd" MesqUite, TX 75149, for more information, I will be delivering three lectures for these good folks, I will also be speaking at the Whittier, CA, Genealogical Society in February 25, 1995, at Whittier, CA, Topics will be Civil War Research, Church Records, and Constructing the Fronlier Community, Contact Mary E, Collins, 8755 1/2 Burton St., Bellflower CA 90-706, for details, I hope to visit with many of our West Coast members at that time,

Words for 1995: Good learning and good hunting,

Arkansas Genealogical Society is compiling a

1995-1996 Resource Directory

The 1992-1993 edition of the Resource Directory was a success. Our goal was to provide sources for reference works on Arkansas. Researchers know the difficulties in finding genealogical reference materials that often are not listed in Books in Print and are sometimes not available through interlibrary loan. Books in our field tend to be published in short runs and are published by small firms and individuals who cannot afford to saturate the market with expensive advertising.

There is no charge to individuals and societies who wish to have their resources included. We want to know about Arkansas resource books, libraries, societies; family histories with Arkansas connections; family newsletters that touch on Arkansas families; Arkansas maps; and any other source on Arkansas helpful to genealogists. We need to know about products that are currently for sale--price, ordering information, etc.

We'll be doing some mailouts to Arkansas societies, libraries, and publishers of Arkansas materials in the coming months, but we invite everyone to tell us about any resource they have for sale about Arkansas. Folks need not be AGS members to have their books included in the resource directory (though we do extend an invitation for them to join).

Our objective is to make the resource directory a one-stop shopping center for genealogists interested in Arkansas. Please help us by contributing information. We hope to have the 1995-1996 Resource Directory published by February 1995 and we'll advertise it in The Arkansas Family Historian and in genealogical publications.

Interested? Send a flyer or brochure about your book, family history or periodical to Desmond Walls Allen, 99 Lawrence Landing Rd., Conway, AR 72032.

In 1992, a listing was published in The Arkansas Family Historian suggesting that it contained the 1829 Sheriff's Census for Independence Co. However, it contained only one township.

In 1829, Independence County was composed of four townships, namely: Ruddell, Christian, Black River and Taylor's Bay. The Sheriff's Census of 1829 was enumerated in the spring of the year. On 1 April 1829, Charles McArthur, the sheriff, and his deputy Joseph H. Egner, certified that the census had been completed and that the enumeration sheets were true and correct Later In 1829. the Township of Taylor's Bay was taken from Independence County and incorporated into the new County of Jackson.

The original enumeration sheets for the four townships of 1829 for Independence County have survived intact and are at the Arkansas History Commission. One Capitol Mall, little Rock, AR 72201. This transcription is made from photocopies of these sheets.

On this census of 1829, only the head of each household is listed by name. All members of a household. including the head, were enumerated into various age groups. Likewise. the slaves owned by a household were enumerated into age groups, but, in this transcription. the total number of slaves owned per household is shown, rather than by age groups.

There were 13 free black persons, 8 males and 5 females. enumerated. A notation concerning each appears by each household in which they lived.

Names from this census are transcribed in the exact order as they appear on the enumeration sheets. The same spelling has been retained. though it Is apparent that some of the names were spelled phonetically by the census enumerator.

A Sher1ff's Census was taken for Independence County for the years of 1823, 1827, 1827 and 1829. Unfortunatey, onfy the one of 1829 survives today.

I am Impressed by the number of names on this 1829 census that do not appear on the federal census of 1830 of Independence and Jackson counties. This fact makes this census of 1829 of real importance to researchers who are interested in this area of Arkansas at that time period.

On 1 April 1829 at Batesville, Charles McArthur, the sheriH of Independence County, and his deputy sheriH, J. H. Egner, signed a statement certifying that the above lists were a true and correct enumeration for said county in 1829.

According to the totals provided by the sheriH and his deputy, the following numbers of persons were enumerated on this census of 1829:

White males age 21 & upwards While males under age 21 White females age 14 & upwards While females under age 14 Free black males Free black females Slaves (ages 10 but under 45)

------------------Moses T. Hannah Family

Submitted by Nancy Stakes-Sprague, Rt. 2, Box 197, Kincaid, KS 66039. This was submitted for the query section some time ago. II is offered here not only for the family data it contains, bul as an example of chronological research,

Moses T. Hannah was the youngest son of John Hannah and his 2d wife, Jean Trimble, b. c1798 in TN, probably Blount Co.; d?, m, 16 Dec 1822 in Blount Co., AL., Rebecca Phittsfurt, b. c1797 VA; d.? (this is the name given in the marriage record. Nowhere else has this name appeared--likely a clerk's interpretation). Children:

1. ? [girl), b. between 1820-25, probably in AL 2. Sarah Jane, b. 4 Dec 1628 AL, m. William M.

Crawford 3. John? b. c1829 AL 4. Mary A., b. c1832 AL 5. Alabama, b. c1835 AL, probably m. Francis

Marion Homesley 6. Susan, b. c1838 AL

1830 Census of Blount Co., AL, had Moses T. Hannor with 1 male under 5, 1 30-40, 1 female under 5, 1 5-10, 1 20-30. Males undoubtedly Moses and probably son John; femaleS, Sarah under 5, a probable dau. age 5-10. Who is female 10-15? The older one is no doubt Rebecca.

1840 Census, Moses is in index of Blount Co., AL

1850 Moses T. Hannah is in Spring River Twp., Lawrence Co., AR as: Moses T., age 52, b. TN; Rebecca, age 53, b. VA; Mary A., age 18; Alabama, age 15; Susan, age 12, all b. AL

In the same township, 1850, was the William M. Crawford family, As she is identHied by her marriage record as Sarah Jane Hannah, the 1830 Moses Hannah had a female in her age group, and no other Hannah family appears in Lawrence Co., n seems probable she is one of Moses daughters. Also in Lawrence Co., Black River Twp" is a John Hannah in the household of Peter Stout (prob. hired hand), it seems probable he is the boy in the 1830 census, Not proven!

Where did this family go after 1850? Have found none of the family other than Sarah and possibly Alabama after this,

Sarah Jane Hannah, probable daughter of Moses T, Hannah and Rebecca Phittsfurt?, b. 4 Dec 1828 AL, d. 8 Dec, 1874, bur. Nooner Cern, on Yell-Perry Co. line, AR, m. 7 Jan 1849 Lawrence Co., AR, by James Johnson, JP, William M. Crawford, son of ? and Elizabeth ? b. 10 Jan 1821, Hamilton Co" TN, d. 29 Sept 1885, probably Steve, AR, bur. Nooner Cem. Ch,:

1. James Monroe, b, 31 May 1850, Lawrence Co., AR; m, Synthia Ann Glenn; had family in Yell CO.,AR

2, John Moses, b. in Aug 1852, Lawrence Co., m, Susan Rattlifi; lived Garland Co" AR.

3. Joe, b. ? child buried near Wm. & Sarah, no dates,

4, "Lizzie" Elizabeth Rebecca, b. Jan 1857, AR, m. George G. Hutto; lived Yell Co., AR.

1849, Sarah Jane Hannah and William M, Crawford were married in Lawrence Co" AR,

1850, Spring River Twp .. Lawrence Co .. AR: William M, Crawford, 20; Sarah, 23; James 1/12; and Elizabeth,54.

1860, William and Sarah were living in Lower Lafave Twp., Yell Co., AR, with ch,: James M., 10: John M., 9; and Rebecca E., 3,

1870 William M. Crawford, farmer, is in Crawford Twp" Yell Co" with wHe Sarah and ch.: John M, 19, and Elizabeth R., 13. Son James M, and wife, Ann, were nearby.

By 1860 Sarah had died, but William was yet living in Crawford Twp.

Alabama Hannah, dau. of Moses T, and Rebecca Phittsfurt Hannah, b, cl835 AL, d. 1, prob. m. cl857-58, Francis Marion Homesly/Homsby, b, cl830-2 TN/AL, d,? Ch, (possibly others):

1. William M. Homesly/Homsby, b, cl858-9, AR 2, Jefferson E. Hornsby, b cl862, AR 3, Joseph S, Hornsby, b, c1864, AR 4. Sarah E, Homsby, b. c1665, AR 5. Bennett S. Homsby, b, c1869, AR

Page 20: Arkansas Family Historian

This family is "logically assumed" to be descend· ants of the Hannah family; proof has not yet been found.

1850. Alabama age 15 was in household of Moses T. and Rebecca Hannah in Lawrence Co .. AR. Sarah Jane {Hannah) Crawford, whose family were nearby. is believed to also be a dau. of Moses T. Hannah.

1860 in Lower Lafave Twp .. Yell Co., AR, next to William and Sarah (Hannah) Crawford was Frances M. Homesly. age 30. farmer, b. TN; Alabama, 23. b. AL; and William M" age t, b. AR. It seems likely Alabama and Sarah were sisters.

1870. Crawford Twp. (taken from Lower Lafeve), Yell Co, AA, near the Crawford's were Homsby, Marlon F., age 38, b. AL; Alabama, 34, b. AL; WiI· liam, 12; Jefferson E .• 8; Joseph S., 5; Sarah E" 5; Bennett S" 1. all b. AR.

Where did this family go after 18701 No people of Hannah name appear in Yell Co., AR census of 1860, 1870, 1860. Would like proof that Sarah Jane was dau. of Moses T. Was Alabama Homseley the Alabama who was dau. of Moses? And where did the Homesl eys go?

Women of Arkansas Pulaski County

One of the shining lights in Arkansas Methodism in early days was Mrs. Ann Conway, mother of Congressman Henry W. Conway and Governor James S. and Elias N. Conway.

This saintly woman was affectionately known by all as "Mothar Conway'. She was eloquent In prayer, and often led, with trembling lips and simple trust· ing faith, the public congregat.lon In their devotions. When attending the services of the church Mrs. Conway habitually sat in a large old fashioned splitbottomed chair, placed near the alter rail. This ole chair was the object of much veneration and was permitted to occupy its accustomed place in the Church long- after its beloved owner had gone to share her master's throne. I am 01 the belief that this old chair was still In the church when the build· ing was taken possession of by the Federal Military Authorities in 1863.

Hog Raising - Izard County Memphis Daily Avalanche, Mar 31, 1877

NOI many weeks ago an Arkansas regiment of soldiers were encamped near this city. It was a full regiment of large robust men, and lor intelligence, slightly In advance of men generally from that patriotic State. One dark nighl after the hour of twelve had been lolled upon the bell in Ihe cupola, we were wending our way homeward. As has been said, the night was dark-overy dark-and we shuddered as we passed into an alley where no gas lamp could be seen; but we traveled determined 10 reach our residence by the shortesl and easiest route. We had not proceded far when we came in collision with something with such force as to knock us down. As we fell, we were commanded premptorlly to halt, and we halted ourself on the curb-stone. Presently the form 01 a large burly soldier approached us without arms, and accosted us with: "How are you, old fels?" and without giVIng time to reply, sat himsell down by our side, and said:

"I'm from old Arkansas, I am--and I'm a high private, rear rank, of company D of Ihe regiment camping outSide this d_d town. I say, old fel, I am all the way from Arkansaw. I was born in Izard county, on the ridge leading to YellvBle, and I can whip my weight in saw-mills, and give It the first lick. I say, old fel, I'm equal 10 a steamboat with a high pressure engine Inside; all I wanl to run well Is to be well fired up with a heat made from sidemeat. I say--talking abut hog meal, the people 01 Tennessee can~ raise hogs as we do in Izard county.·they don't know how, and they havn't got the fodder. Acorn and beech trees are thicker in Izard county than fiddles in h I; and our farmers have no trouble in fat'nen' their pigs. Old hogs are never known to get fat in Izard, but shoats and pigs do. As soon as a litter 01 pigs are "hatched", and are able to wander, they are turned out; and many's the time I've seen an old sow in the upmost branches of a tall acorn or beech tree, shaking 011 the nuts for her pigs below. That's the way pigs get fat, while the old ones remain poorl"

We laughed slightly at this assertion, as much to say that we doubted the story, when he offered to back his story with a twenty dollar Arkansas bond. We "caved" immediately, told him good night, and went home, with the idea that hog-raising in Izard was not very troublesome.

The Slaughtered Immigrants----------------

A Reminisce of the Massacre by One of the Survivors of the Party that Left Arkansas From the Memphis Daily Avalanche Mar 31, 1877, p. 4, col. 5

(San FranciSCO. March 24, dispatch to New York Herald]

The following is the substance of some information of Interest concerning the Arkansas emigrant train which was intercepted at Mountain Meadows, Utah. on the 15th of September, 1857. as furnished by one of the original emigrant party. With the exception of the seventeen infants spared by the Mormons. or such of them as yet survive, bUl four persons are known 10 be slill alive who sel oul wilh the train from the Arkansas line. The lives of the latter were saved through a quarrel which resulted in their separation from the main party a few days previous to Ihe massacre. Their names are Eph· raim Mathias, residing in Nevada; Joseph Ware. believed to be somewhere in this State; Mrs. Duck, widow of W. B. Duck, who was leader of the little party which abandoned the train, residing at Fort Wayne, Ind., and P. K. Jacoby, a brother of Mrs. Duck and a member of the police force of this city. who furnishes these particulars:

The train was organized at FallVUie. Ark .• and start· ed on its journey in April. 1857. It numbered 140 souls··men, women and children. They had with them 900 head of cattle in a herd. and 100 working oxen drawing the sixteen wagons. The leading families were of the older Baker, with his wife and family, aOO two married sons with their families. the Hough family from Arkansas, and the Reeds from Missouri, comprising Reed, Sr., and family and his son and family. Mr. Huck and party, Including Ollicer Jacoby, joined the train from Ohio. The Reeds and Bakers were the principal owners of the stock. and also had in their possession a considerable amount of specie, their design being to make large investments in land in the southern part of this State. There were also half a dozen other families. whose names are not now remembered by Jacoby. A large number of hired men accompanied the train as bullwhackers and stock herders, and the party included between thirty and forty children, ranging from infancy up. Several families joined the train at a station in the Indian Territory, the last point of departure from civilization.

The route taken was up the Arkansas river to the vicinity of Pike's Peak, and from this locality on the middle emigrant road to Fort Bridger, which point was reached about the beginning of September. During the Journey the emigrants were frequenlly molested by the Indians. On one occasion, shortly before reaching Fort Bridger, the whole 900 head of loose cattle were stampeded and run 011 in the night. A strong detachment was counted off from the train and started in pursuit of the Indians under command of a noted plainsman from Missouri.

The chase was continued for three days, in which time the party captured an Indian and pressed him into the service as a guide. To save his own life the redskin conducted the party to an Indian village among the hills. The savages were surprised and stampeded in turn and all the cattle were recovered with the exception of seventeen head, together with a good quantity of loot in the way of buffalo skins and other effects to partially compensate for the trouble the Indians had caused. Before reaching Fort Bridger, Hough, one of the leaders from Arkansas, was bitten in the hand while asleep by a tarantula, and his sullerings. which delayed the party some days, resulted in death, leaving a widow and a large family of young children, but, as fate decreed, they did not long survive to need his protection.

The train was composed of antagonistic elements. The larger proportion of those composing it were from Arkansas and Missouri, but a party, of which Duck was the leader, came from Ohio and other States that had been slow to recognize the validity of the fugitive slave law. On reaching Fort Bridger, then an outpost of the Mormon horde who were in rebellion against the Government, the defection in the train resulted in the withdrawal of Duck.

The Ohio family, with about 100 head of stock, had struck out from Fort Bridger down the Bear river, on what was known as the northern route, and reached California without further mishap or consequence. About two weeks from their departure from Fort Bridger they received intelligence from a party that overtook them that the Arkansas train, which they had abandoned. had all been massacred. The bloody deed was attributed to the Indians.

-------------------Book Reviews and Notices

By Bobbie Jones Mclane Lynda Childers Suffridge, Desmond Walls Allen, Carolyn Earle Billingsley, Russell P. Baker

The following are reviews and/or announcements of book acquisitions for the Arkansas Genealogical Society. The reviewed books are permanently housed at the Arkansas History Commission, or in the local History and Genealogy Room of the Little Rock Public Library. The Society expresses its appreciation to the authors and contributors. In ordering copies of these books, please remember to say you saw the review or notice in this publication!

Address Book for Germanic Geneal09Y (Fifth Ed~ion), by Ernest Thode (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Company, 1994), soft cover, 174 pages (2 maps). This book has been updated to reflect the recent changes in Germany, including the union of east and west Germany, the dissolutions of the former USSR, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia, and the new German postal code system that went into eflect in 1993. Thode first presents lists of genealogical, historical, and German-related societies outside Europe, then lists archives in America, as well as German-American religious organizations, booksellers, and newspapers. He also suggests sources for maps and ship records. Then he supplies what appears to be a comprehensive list of addresses for national, state, and municipal archives in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Other lists of addresses include: European religious archives, Heimatortskartelen, genealogical and historical societies, national and regional libraries, German museums, and genealogists. Form letters are provided, In German and in their English translations, to make it possible for non-German speakers to write letters of inquiry to church parishes, civil registration offices, and other officials. With most addresses, Thode provides an explanation of what the agency does and what records one might expect to find there. There is a great deal of helpful information for anyone doing research on German-speaking ancestors. A minor problem Is the lack of an index-anyone needing information on a certain region or group must simply look through each list (usually alphabetically arranged) in order to find the specific region or group being sought. (CEB)

The Morrisons: They Came To The Land That Hud9in Drains by Glenn Hamilton Morrison, 300 pages, soft cover, charts, iIIus., index. This is an attractive small paperback genealogy about the Morrison family from Columbus, GA, and Cleveland Co., AR. The clan sprang from one Daniel Morrison, who died in Putman Co., GA, In 1819. Related families are: Harper, Ashurst, Clements, Garrard, McBride, Owsley, Sharp, Thomas and McClatchy. The first 91 pages contain information on these families. This is followed by four appendices: one relating to the Morrison Clan In Scotland, one listing documents used by the author, one containing a list of other GA and AL records relating to the family, and a final section with family descendant charts. None of these last four sections are indexed. The book is well put together and printed in a very readable type face. The price is $15.95, plus s $2.00 postage. Copies can be ordered from the author at 3319 Bedford Forrest Dr., Missouri City, TX 77459-4904. [RPBI

The Descendents of John Teape and Elizabeth Bruce, 304 pp., ill us. and charts, $15.00

These three books contain the genealogical IHe work of the late Mr. Jesse Harold Day and were published by Jesse R. Day, 32552 Rivers Ln., Wilsonville, OR 97070. The first is a soft cover work and has no index. The other two are hard cover and come w~h what appears to be full name Indexes. Evidently Mr. Day had completed the second and third of the volumes and they are nicely presented. The first was published "lust as he had It" from his notes. Ali contain genealogical charts and a fine collection of pictures. The Arrowsmith family were pioneers of Gallatin Co., KY. The Day families were from colonial Greenbrier and Tazwell Co., VA. The Teape family volume contains information on families from New York and Iowa. Most of the families in these three books are midwestern. William Wilson Stevenson was one of the pionear clergymen of Arkansas. He was in the state as early as 1824. He preached first lor the Cumberland Presbyterians and then lor the "Campbellites" or Christians, In 1831 he married Widow Maria Toncray Watkins in Little Rock, He later moved to the West Coast. where he continued his ministerial work. Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) Marriage Books A & B, by Sandra Tedford, 400 Sherry Lane, Farmersville, TX 75442; 1992. Bride and Groom index; separate Minister Index, 93 pp., soft cover, $15.00 plus $2.00 postage (Texas residents add $1.09 state sales tax). This book is a transcription 01 over 2,300 marriage applications in the Chickasaw Nation, Which Included all or part of twelve counties including Bryan,Carter, Garvin, Grady, Jefferson, Johnston, LO\Ie, McClain, Marshall, Murray, Pontotoc and Stephens. Inlormation included are the name, age and place of residence 01 both the bride and groom, date of marriage, minister, and page number in the original marriage book. To conserve space, the author omits the dates of the application, return, and county official's name. She encourages you 10 obtain a photocopy of the original document. The original book Indicates marriages beginning in 1895, but it includes a few marriages for late 1894 to March, 1897. The author notes that there are many out-ol-state (Texas, Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma Territory) people listed and that the original grooms-only index omitted some marriages entirely as well as listed some names under the wrong letter. This is a valuable resource to check if you have research in this area. [LCS]

Index of Obituaries and Death Reports appearing in The Arkansas Gazetle: 1926 by Oscar G. Russell, 506 Loop Road, Nonh Litlle Rock. AR 72120; 300 pp .. 12,261 entries; indexed, spiralbound; soft-cO\ler-$45, hard·bound-$60 (prices are postpaid). This book is another in the series by Russell. He has now completed, in addition to this volume, 1920-1926, 1960, and two-volume sets for 1990-1993; he is currently working on 1927, and will have the first ha~ of the 1994 volume in print by the time this review appears. These indexes give information on every person's death mentioned in the Arkansas Gazefte during the year, with the name as given, the location of the death, the age, and the date, page and column In which the notice appaared. With this information, researchers can order a copy of an obituary 01 interest from the Arkansas History CommiSSion, In this volume, Russell notes two exceptions: the editions for July 27 and October 2 are missing from the micrOfilm and thus are not included. The best leature of the book, other Ihan the invaluable Information itself, is the locaUty Index, which consists of all the names sorted by location of death. Thus, if you are researching Saline County, Arkansas, you can check the locality index under the county name and/or each 01 the city or community names. and lind a list of all the Saline County people who died, I was surprised at the number of out-of-state (and out-ofcountry) obituaries printed by the Gazette. Atthough these volumes are a little expensive for home libraries, you should definitely look for them on the shelves 01 your genealogy library or archives, [CEB]

A Corner of the Tapestry: A History of the Jewish Experience in Arkansas, 18205-19905 by Carolyn Gray LeMaster (Fayetteville, AR: The University of Arkansas Press, 1994,) Hard-bound, 622 pages, full-name index, foreword by Rabbi Malcolm H. Stern; $60, plus $3 shipping and han· dling (Arkansas residents add 4.5% sales tax), from University 01 Arkansas Press, Fayetteville, AR 72701, or call 1-800-525-1823, or FAX 501-575-8044; Visa/Mastercard accepted. Very few people are aware of the rich and long history of Jews In Arkansas, This comprehensive book is a wonderfUl way to correct that oversight. The book is meticulously written, with carelul citations and bibliography, and incorporates the slories of both the visible, wealthy Jewish families with those who lived ordinary lives. It's a faSCinating book, even for those with no Jewish ancestors. For the story behind why LeMaster, who is herself not Jewish, wrote the book, you might want to read an article in the Arkansas Gazette, "Christian treks into past of state's Jews," Saturday, July 16, 1994, page 5E, columns 3-6. Southern Loyalists in the Civil War: The Southern Claims Commission by Dr. Gary B. Mills [1994J 686 pp., is a composite directory 01 case files created by the US Commlssloner of Claims, 1871-1880, including those appeaied to the War Oalms Committee of the US House of Representa· tives and the US Court 01 Claims. $45.00 plus $3.00 S/h. [Genealogical Publishing Co. , 1001 N. Calvert, Baltimore, MD 21202.] Dr, Mills first published an index to Southern Claims Commission records in 1980. That very popular book has been out of print for several years and the completion 01 this book is a more complete guide to the body of records. Six years after the War Between the States ended, a commission was established by Congress to hear claims by residents 01 Southern states who professed loyalty to the Union cause, The 22,298 claims created a massive amount of paperwork which can be helpful to historians and genealogists. But the records are scattered among several groups of federal records and somewhat Intimidating to the uninitiated. Dr. Mills' book describes the records, their background, and arrangement in great detail. A carefully reconstructed alphabetical index to claimants makes up the bulk of the work. Entries are cross-referenced as to variations in different finding aids. This

volume is a must-have for all researchers Interested in the Southern states in the post-War Between the States period. (DWA)

Scottish Family History, A Guide to Works 01 Reference on the History and Genealogy of Scottish Families by Margaret Stuart [1930, repint 1994] 386 pp., published by Genealogical Publish· ing Co., Inc., 1001 North Calvert St., Baltimore, MD 21202, $25.00 plus $3.00 p/h, no index. Part I of this book is titled, "How to Write A Family History." It covers construction of a variety of pedigree charts, writing family histories In either an historical or scientHlc method, use of public records both printed and unpublished, and use of private records and club publications. Part II, titled "Scottish Family History," contains a comprehensive guide to Scottish family histories located in books, periodicals, manuscripts, and pamphlets. Families are listed alphabetically with residence, seat, or estate to distinguish one family from another when the names are the same. Most families listed seem to be those of Peerage. This book would be a good reference to check when doing Scottish Research. Accessing the material referred to In Part II may be difficult from the U. S., although part of the materials mentioned might be available through the Family History Library. (LCS)

Calvert SI., Baltimore, MD 21202; 1993. 316 pp. Index, Illustrations, maps, tables. Softbound. $19.95. This Is an excellent book for anyone attempting Welsh family history research. Archives and repositories in Wales are discussed in other chapters as well as the types of records available and where to locate them. There are also chapters on Migration and Emigration. An explanation of Welsh Patronymic Sumames and the fact that this scares off many a would-be Welsh researcher (when it shouldn't), gives encouragement to anyone needing to do Welsh research.
