She said the family lived within hearing distance of the battle of Shiloh during the CivU War. I found this family in McNairy Co.; Tenn. in the 1860 census. I have found where some Atkins belonged to Shiloh Methodist Church a number of years before the Civil War. They were Rev. Geo. Atkins, a Paton Atkins and a J. P. Atkins. By 1850, Paton, who was a son of this Geo W. Atkins, were in Jefferson Co., Ark. I found where Paton and twin, Green D., and their father, Geo. W. Atkins, Sr. are buried in Atkins Family Cemetery in Jefferson Co., Ark., Richland township. Geo. W. was born 1782, died 1859. He could be a brother to my ancestor, William, b. 1797, d. 1841.

The E. D. L. Atkins. family were in White Co., Ark. near Searcy in 1870. He died Jan. 16, 1873, but have never been able to find out where he is buried. The family moved to Texas in 1875. I would like to contact any Atkins descendants in Arkansas, particularly in the White County area.

ROCK CREEK CKMETERY, MONTGOMERY COUNTY, ARKANSAS

*

Rock Creek Cemetery is located across from the swimming area at Camp Albert Pike and, I believe, in the Ouachiat National Forest, Montgomery County. On the tourists' map it is called "Ole Indian Burying Ground". There are about 35 to 40 graves marked with sandstone rock, but no names could be found on these. It is a well kept cemetery at the side of the mountain. Copied Summer, 1969, by Jo Dildy, Box 155, Nashville, Ark. 71852.

INDEX TO GOODSPEED'S FAULKNER COUNTY, ARKANSAS

by: Joe C. Shaw, Sandra Hurst and Betty Weaver

This index includes the name of every person mentioned in that portion of Goodspeed's 1889 history of Central Arkansas devoted to Faulkner County. This original work has long been out of print and is a valuable collectors' item. Copies may be consulted, however, in a number of college and public libraries in Arkansas. The names indexed in this publication include not only the family name of the Faulkner COlUlty people mentioned by Goodspeed, but, in most cases, their ancestors and children, a total of well over 800 names.

The Faulkner County Historical SocIety has published a reprint of this history in two sections in its quarterly,. Faulkner Facts and Fiddlings; the issues of Fall, 1964 and Spring 1967, the former selling at $1.25 and the latter at $2.00. The address is Post Office Box 731, Conway, Ark., 72032. J. C. S.

BANKS John Banks m. Margaret Gibson in 1846 in Tenn. They were parents of Jemima, m. 1st,

DeHart, M. 2nd, Wm, Peters, Louisiana; Phebe, m. Francis Marion Eaves; Armon ''Bud'' m. 1st, Mary E. Liner, m. 2nd, Martha Liner Parham; Sarah Ann "Sally", m. George W. Liner; Lot, m. Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Burk; James S., m. FannieMeans; Amanda Melvina, m. Alexander McBride; and Margaret Ellen, m. Andrew Barber. I think they were from Tenn. to Texas to Ark. In 1880 they were in Polk Co. , Ark.

I am also interested in the Thomas and Edwards from No. Alabama to Ark. They were in Faulkner, White and Saline counties. There is a Brooks-VanPelt connection, and perhaps Ball and Covington.. Williams from Obion Co., Tenn. to Clay Co., Ark. and Polk Co. Funderburk, Cashon, Peden and Lowe from anywhere. I will answer all letters.

Also, I have a copy of the Mid South Bible Records, which I will check free of charge for anyone sending a self-addressed stamped envelope.

BARKMAN - LATHAM In the No.1 issue of the Arkansas Gazette, printed at Arkansas Post in 1819, is a notice

of divorcement by Susan Latham, represented by her best friend and mother, Ann Greenwalt. Need given name of Susan (Barkman-Barrickman) Latham's husband. Ann Greenwalt, maiden name unknown, first married a Barkman (Barrickman), given name unknown. Made will Sept. 7, 1821, filed Oct. 25, 1821, Probate book AA, Page 24, 25, Territory and township of Arkansas. Will names son, Jacob Barkman, to receive 300 acres of land, confirmed to his mother by the authority of the American Government, situated on the west side of the great Prarie County and Township foresaid. Also names daughters, Catharine and Mattie Greenwalt.

An 1821 issue of the Arkansas GazettEl records the death of Betsy Barkman, wife of Jacob Barkman, at the home five miles from the post, leaving four small children. Did Jacob Barkman then marry Luc~nda (---?)? A land entry in Dewitt shows Jacob B.arkman and Wife Lu,," cinda selling land in 1829.

In 1829 Sheriffs list or' Arkansas Co. , Ark. is an Elisha Barkman, and in 1840 a Curtis Barkman. In 1840 Federal Census there is listed a Jacob Barkman of Arkansas Co. A Jacob Barrickman was here as early as 1811-14. Can anyone tell me any thing about this family?

CHANC EY - CHA UNCEY The Chauncy family in America goes !;lack to 1fi37 , but the spelling has been changed

through the years from Chauncy to Chauncey to Chancey. There are ~al)lilies living in Ozark, Ark. who were not aware that they were related but felt that they must be. Each family seemed to have stemmed from an Amos, but one line had come to Arkansas from Ga. andAla. and the other from Tenn. I discovered that one Amos was born in 1797 in N, C. and buried in TelL'l. The other was born in 1800 8,Dd was in Ga. by 1822 and was buried in Ga. SUre enough the two Amoses had the same grandfather. I would be interested1:phear from anyqne who is interested in working on this line.

I am also working on the Hendon line. That family was in Barry Co., MQ., jUlilt north of the Arkansas boundary from 1850 to 1900 and in McDonald C9., Mo. from 1900 to 1950. Asa Hendon and his offspring were the only ones there, but·there were additonal Hendons -- from Ky., Tenn., Ga. and Ala., who came west, and prol)ably some of them settled in Arkansas.

and in Smith Co., Tenn. in 1820, and inMadisonCp.,'l'enn. in. 1830. Stanford Denny, one of three sons, came to Madison Co., Ark. before 1640. Were Burnett and Searcy Denny, who filed on land in Madison Co., also sons of Clail)orne?

Jacob Drake, b. 1778, Pa., is thought to have had one liaughter, Ester Elizabeth, by his first wife. Who was this wife, and where was she born and married? Their daughter was born in Tenn., m. Alvin Hash, move!i to Sangamon Co., Ill. an!i later to Washington Co., Ark. The daughter of Alvin and Ester Hash married the son of stanford and Martha (Robinson?) Denny. EDENS- STOCKTON . . 1- have reason to believe that 'my gr-grandmother, Edy or Edith, who later married Elliott

" . \

Stockton in Barry Co., MCi~ in 1844,.was first married to an Elias Edens, probably in Izard . Co. ,Ark: I have written the' Izard Co. Clerk and was informed that all records were burned in 1889'. The 1!l50 census for Barry Co., Mo. shows that the Edy Edens who married Elliott .Stockton in 1844,had two male children, 13 and 10 years old, John and Jonathan Edens, both

. born in Ark.' The 1840 census for Izard County, Ark. shows one Elias Edens, 30-40 years of age., wife 20-30, with two children, a male under 5 and a female 5-10 years old. Edy would have been 21 'iil 184(), according to the age given in 1850. One of her two sons by Edens would have been born during 1840, perhaps after the census enumeration. In 1840 Elias Edens was shown to reside in the "l1outh fork township" of Izard Co. Either Elias or Edith was probably part Cherokee1m;lian. She is shown in 1850 as having been born in Kentucky. My problem is to determine Edy or Edith's maiden name.
