A graduation is always such a special occasion - the culmination of years of hard work; the

actualization of goals attained and the acknowledgement of successes achieved.

For these six wonderful people it has been a journey that started 13 years ago with tentative

steps at first, but one that has taken them to remarkable heights. Of course they encoun-

tered trials and tribulations along the way...days when the destination seemed much too far

away and when they wondered would they ever make it…but they did…and of course have

come out all the more stronger and resilient for the journey. They have experienced excep-

tional moments, magical moments and created memories and friendships that will be fondly

remembered in the years ahead. Kerrilee Logan

Congratulations! Today is your day.

You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself any direction you choose. (Dr Seues)

Our School is in safe hands.. Last Friday we held a special assembly where our students who wanted to be considered for Primary or Secondary School Captains, 2018, presented their Captain speeches. Each year when students stand up to speak you can see their nerves, you feel so much for them as we all know what it is like to stand up in front of your peers and speak, it can be really quite terrifying. Our students did an amazing job in presenting their speeches. As a school staff we were so proud of each and everyone of them, personally I was touched and extremely proud of the fabulous values they shared and the pride they showed in our great little school. Below are the Secondary students speeches, in the next issue we will feature the Primary students speeches. Enjoy the read. Kerrilee Logan

Leila’s Captain Speech Good morning students, staff and parents. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Leila Verney. I have attended ACS since year four, which although I haven’t been here my whole schooling life I have been here for 7 years, that’s 64% to be exact. I am extremely proud of my school, my achievements here and the opportunities I have received. Over the years I have attempted to put my best foot forward in everything I do, whether it be my exams or participating in school sports carnivals. Now, I can’t promise anything overly awesome like changing the bubblers to soft drink, banning homework or changing the 5 day school week into a 1 day thing, but what I can promise is that I will do whatever I can to make this school a better place for everyone, whether that means listening to people’s problems, taking their ideas to SRC meetings or even playing a game of handball with them. I don’t want anyone to see me as some big scary senior kid but as their mate. I’m not going to go into detail about my achievements because I don’t want to bore anyone and I know that frankly, none of you really care. I just want everyone who votes for me to know that it is a smart choice and that the school will hopefully benefit from it. Thank you for considering me as your school captain for 2018. I look forward to the possibility of leading my school in the future and I hope you do too.

Jayden’s Captain Speech Firstly, I’d like to thank all of you who are attending today’s special assembly. For most of you that don’t know me, my name’s Jayden Woodward and I’m running to become one of Ardlethan Central School Captains for 2018. I have been at Ardlethan since year 4 when my family and myself moved from Western Sydney to Ardlethan to run the local pub. My first day here was terrifying I didn’t know anyone but I settled in well thanks to my mates and the teachers. Being a leader isn’t just about being an outspoken character that gets noticed, it’s about all the other little qualities. Words like hard working, dedication, persistence and enthusiasm spring into mind, the-se are all extremely important in becoming a good leader.

Having the opportunity to become one of the two School Captains of Ardlethan Central School means a lot to me. The role of School Captain is immensely important, not only for the school but for the wider communi-ty of Ardlethan. If elected School Captain, I will proudly represent the school, in everything I do. Wear-ing the logo on my shirt everyday gives me an immense amount of pride and satisfaction. As School Captain, I will strive to guide every single one of you in this room to success, continuing to set a good example to you all. If elected School Captain, I will endeavour to do the school proud, in anything and everything I do. Thank you all for listening and vote one for woody!

Week 6, Year 5-8 students had the

chance to have time to continue build-

ing their shelters. All survivalists are

making great progress in building and

engineering their project designs.

Week 7: It was time for students to

learn about water and how they could

find life-saving water to keep hydrated

in the hot Australian wilderness. We

learnt about how to use evaporation

and transpiration from plants to obtain

drinking water using a solar water still.

Check us out in action!

Stay tuned for next week were we find

direction from the sun and stars and

learn how to signal for help.

Work Experience For the first week of work experience I went to Tumut, to work at the National Park with Shane Herrington and Talia (it was so much fun, the people were really funny and nice). The first day was pretty relaxed, I woke up and went to the Tumut Information Centre where I was introduced to most of the staff. After introductions we drove up to Yarrangobilly Caves and then we took a tour through Jersey cave where I learned about the caves history and how it was made. Then we went to Long Plains hut and Cooinbil hut, when it began to rain (ugh!). On Tuesday onward to Thursday was pretty much the same, we drove up to Yarrangobilly caves again, where we taught kids aboriginal culture such as:

How to play the Yidaki (didgeridoo), and the sounds it creates e.g. kookaburra, dingo, and kangaroo. Throwing a boomerang Paint their faces How to make a fire using string bark, sticks and oaka. Making bracelets and rope out of string bark

On Friday, we drove to Adelong to teach kids to count in Aboriginal and taught them to make bracelets and we then painted their faces, after that we drove back to Tumut. The week at Tumut was fun and I learned so much. The second week of work experience was pretty…….eventful, I worked here at school with year 3/4/5/6 with Mr Carnie and Ms Crocker. I had fun. I mostly entertained the kids, helped them, listen to them read to me and helped out the teachers. (All I know is, I won’t be doing that for a living). By Jordan Booth

Last week I went to Temora Nursing Home for work experience. Throughout the week, I participated in a range of activities around the home, these included talking and playing games with the residents, learning how to care for some of them, feeding them and even playing piano for some. I enjoyed the week a lot and definitely will consider age care nursing as a future career. Amy

For work experience I went to both Ardlethan Preschool and the K/1/2 room. I assisted with the children, helping them with spelling and other learning areas. If I ever went into child care as a career I would definitely go into early learning. Leila Verney

During my second week of Work Experience I went to Landmark, in Ardlethan. I enjoyed it. The activities I was involved in, were Retail, Stock Take, re-stocking, checking client’s crops for pests, open field days and crop judging. Loclan Nau

In Week 2, for work experience, I went to the Forbes Veterinary Clinic. During the week I met all of the staff who worked there and many locals. During the days there, I watched a lot surgery and went to a few farm visits, I also walked and played with many of the animals. My favourite part of the week was helping look after a Labrador that was bitten by a tiger snake, it was also quite interesting watching the vets at work. I thoroughly enjoyed my week at the clinic and would definitely consider being a vet, or vet nurse as a career in the future. Hannah Scarlett

For week experience in Week 2, I went to Cricket NSW for 3 days. On the first 2 days, I mostly did Business work and I helped at a school clinic. On the 3rd day I was lucky enough to be able to be shown around the SCG team rooms and I was with the NSW blues cricket team whilst they trained and met the coach, Josh Hazlewood, Peter Nevill and Kurtis Patterson. All up I really enjoyed myself and I thank Mrs Bray for organizing the Work experience. Jayden Woodward

ACTIVE KIDS GUIDELINES LAUNCHED

Parents of school children across NSW are encouraged to take advantage of the $100 ‘Active Kids’ rebate for sporting and fitness related costs launching early next year.

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke MP, welcomed the release of the ‘Active Kids’ Rebate Guidelines, saying families can take advantage of the rebate from January 31 next year.

“This rebate addresses one of the most important issues across our local community –easing the cost of living for families,” Ms Cooke said.

“We know how household costs can add up and want to ease the pressure on families where we can, so we are encouraging parents take advantage of this rebate and enrol their children in their preferred sport.

“These activities could include traditional sport such as netball, football or cricket; as well as other fitness or physical activities such as swimming classes or dance,” she said.

From 31 January 2018 parents will be able to claim up to $100 per school enrolled child per calendar year as a voucher to reduce the cost of eligible sport and fitness activities.

"Every dollar counts in the household budget and this $100 will reduce a barrier that stops kids from playing more sport.”

“Through Active Kids, we want to make sport more affordable and continue our target of reducing childhood obesity rates by five per cent over 10 years.”

The rebate is not means tested so every family has access to this initiative. Parents will be able to register for the voucher online from January 31 2018 or through their local Service NSW Centre.

Guidelines are available to view at:

www.sport.nsw.gov.au/activekids.
