Introducing CA arcserve UDP

CA arcserve UDP is based on a next

generation unified architecture for both

virtual and physical environments. Its

unmatched breadth, ease of use, and

Assured Recovery capabilities set it

apart from other data protection

solutions. This unified solution offers

innovative features such as:

CA arcserve UDP allows users to easily scale their hybrid business continuity topologies, locally or

over long distances with multiple sites, including service and cloud providers . At the heart of the

architecture is the Recovery Point Server (RPS). Among the key features of RPS are a true global

source-side deduplication engine, proven built-in replication, data “jumpStart” / data Seeding,

multi-tenant storage, compression and AES encryption.

Also, the era of storage software vendors

providing a long list of components and à la carte

solutions has ended. Storage protection

customers are now seeking single solutions that

solve a broad range of inter-related problems, not

a broad range of solutions that solve isolated

problems.

Hence, rather than providing a CA arcserve family

of products, CA arcserve is providing Unified Data

Protection. Stand-alone CA arcserve Backup® and

CA arcserve Replication and High Availability® will

continue to be offered as they are today. They will

be updated to continue to provide best-in-class

capabilities for tape and replication. Those

changes will also appear within the CA arcserve

Unified Data Protection solution.

Summary Overview

What is Recovery Point Server (RPS)?The Recovery Point Server (RPS) is a new architectural component in our

portfolio, it is a backup repository for disk images and offers a unique set of

technologies that provide the fundamental building blocks of the CA arcserve

UDP solution. Among the key features of RPS are:

• True Source Side Global Deduplication

• Proven Built-in Replication of Disk Images

• RPS Jumpstart or “Offline” Synchronization

• Multi-Tenant StorageThe Recovery Point Server (RPS) is included in all editions of CA arcserve UDP.

What is the Tape/Archive Module (sometimes referred to as “BasicTape”)?This element provides tape capabilities to CA arcserve UDP, including the ability

to perform a tape backup of Recovery Point Server deduplication datastores. In

addition, it allows users to easily restore and “re-hydrate” deduplicated backups

directly from tape and perform one step file level restore.

The CA arcserve UDP Standard & Advanced Editions only include Basic Tape

(limited license of CA arcserve Backup r16.5) which only allows archival of CA

arcserve UDP recovery points to tape. Additional CA arcserve Backup Options

must be separate purchased.

The CA arcserve UDP Premium & Premium Plus Editions include Advanced

Tape (full capabilities of CA arcserve Backup r16.5).

What are the other major components of CA arcserve UDP?Apart from the Recovery Point Server (RPS), there are the following main

components:

• UDP Console: This architectural element provides administrators with a

single, web-based management console that enables the entire CA arcserve

UDP environment to be managed quickly and easily. The unified

management console makes use of wizards, which greatly simplifies

deployment, day-to-day management and reporting functions.

• UDP Windows Agent: Used for image-based backups of Windows Server.

• UDP Linux Agent: Linux machines protected using the image-based

protection capabilities of CA arcserve UDP are known as UDP Linux Agents.

• UDP Linux Backup Server: A Backup Server or management component

required for protection of Linux nodes using the UDP Linux Agent.

• Host-Based/Agentless Backup Proxy: The Host-Based/Agentless Backup

Proxy is an architectural element based upon technology that enables a

singlepass backup of all Windows and non-Windows VMs, without the need

to install software agents on each VM. It can optionally be located on the

RPS itself.

What is “Premium Tape”?“Premium Tape” provides the full range of file-based protection and tape

capabilities available with traditional CA arcserve Backup® r16.5. “Premium

Tape” also includes all features associated with CA arcserve Backup Options.

“Basic Tape” only allows the additional CA arcserve Backup Options (such as

the Tape Library Option which is required in order to backup to a Tape Library

with more than a single drive) to be purchased as add-ons.

What is the difference between RPS Replication (included in alleditions) and what’s included with “Premium HA”?RPS Replication only enables replication of image-based backups.

WAN Optimized Continuous Copy & High Availability Capabilities traditionally

available with CA arcserve Replication & High Availability r16.5 is included with

“Premium HA” (included in Premium Plus Edition) and provides asynchronous

application aware real-time replication, as well as high availability for critical

servers. Premium HA is built to target zero data loss / downtime requirements.

CA arcserve Unified Data Protection Standard

Edition provides imaging functionality for

Windows and Linux servers, whether virtual or

physical by creating block-based images of

their volumes. Those image-based recovery

points are able to be stored locally or on a

centralized Recovery Point Server where

source-based Deduplication is offered. There is

the option to have a remote Recovery Point

Server (RPS) that can be located in a cloud

location or in a remote network operations

center where multiple downstream RPS

devices can replicate their data to a single

upstream RPS. A centralized management

console consolidates all of the above

functionality into plans organizing multiple

tasks and schedules.

CA arcserve UDP v5 provides fast image-based backup to disk that simplifies protecting and

recovering business data on both physical and virtual Windows and Linux servers. It can

speed backup and recovery while reducing storage requirements and costs.

Managed Capacity Program (MCP) or per-TB pricing is designed for large companies with complex IT

environments and highly demanding requirements with over 1TB of protected storage capacity. MCP is

licensed per “protected Terabyte” and allows unlimited access to the selected product technologies to

protect up to the license capacity purchased with a minimum purchase quantity of one terabyte.

MCP can be purchased using the same 4 options described on Page 7.

How to measure ‘protected data’?

Protected data (or “source data”) is the data which is actively protected in a licensed environment

(terabyte or socket)

Usually located at the production servers or backup repository

An ASBU Backup Server at the remote site needs an extra license unless it’s only migrating UDP

Recovery Points or other data from source site to Tape. If additional data needs to be protected on the

remote site, that would require additional licenses.
