Here I Am

“Here I am.” These three words represent a common response of

people as they hear the call of God. In the Bible, such notable characters as

Abraham, Isaiah and Ananias all answered the voice of God by speaking

these three words. As I join you in ministry at Archdale United Methodist

Church, I would like to follow their example and speak these same words.

First of all, I would like to say to the Lord, “Here I am.” For I am here

as a result of God’s call on my life and, like you, I am here ultimately to

serve Him. As your pastor, you will frequently hear me state that God has a

call upon each one of our lives. You will also hear me say that the greatest

joy that we can know in life is in growing as followers of Jesus Christ and

serving Him in our world. That joy begins as we say to God, “Here I am.”

But just as I say, “Here I am” to God, I would also like to say those

three words to each one of you at Archdale. I am here to serve you and to

encourage you in living for Jesus Christ. Lou Ann, Emily and I look forward

to meeting each and every member of the Archdale family. We look forward

to joining with you as we worship, serve, learn, grow and fellowship

together.

As we begin this chapter in the life and ministry of Archdale UMC, it

is a joy to say, “Here I am.” Yet the most important thing is not that I am

here or that you are here. The most important thing is that Christ is here. He

lives in our hearts by faith and reveals himself to us through every part of

life. And he desires to do a wonderful work through us as we serve Him

together.

I look forward to all that the Lord Jesus Christ has in store for us.

Open Hearts...Open Minds…Open Doors

The people of the United Methodist Church.

Have you seen these commercials on television? I always feel proud of my denomination when I see them. How does OUR church live up to this motto? I think of opening our doors to the people in the Interfaith Hospitality program. I think of opening our hearts when we give food for COAT. I think of the Confirmands and their work to get 280 mosquito nets for malaria relief in Africa. Our hearts and doors are open, but what about our minds?

Last month I wrote that the worst thing about being a Methodist is losing a pastor that you love; how-ever, if we truly believe that all things work for good for those that love the Lord, we will keep an open mind as we greet our new pastor. Stuart Noell and his family arrived here on June 30th. He is excited and eager to be our pastor. A lot of thought and prayer went into the decision to send him to our church. He is, to quote Dana, “just what we need”. Together with Stuart we can keep the enthusiasm and excitement going on our corner of Hwy. 311 and Petty Street.

Emily Noell will start kindergarten in August. She will miss her friends in Hickory, so it will be a chance for all our 4, 5, and 6 year olds to open their hearts and doors to her. She would love to go swimming or to the movies! I am sure that some of the church members will take food to the parson-age the first week in July, thus showing our open hearts. Everyone that is in town will probably turn out for Stuart’s first Sunday, July 5th. The Methodist Men are opening our doors for a hot dog and hamburger luncheon after church that Sunday, so everyone can get to meet the Noell Family. Our hearts and doors will be open, but I am asking you to have your mind open to the change as well. We adults can be pretty resistant to change, and for our church to continue to thrive, we must have open minds.

Pray for our church, and for Stuart, Lou Ann, and Emily. Pray for Dana, Pat, Aaron, and Ashley. Pray for all of the United Methodist pastors that are moving on June 30th. It is a hard thing to move to a new community, church, school, and house. We can help that move by keeping our hearts, doors, and minds open to having a new preacher.

Is it better to get a new pastor when our church is healthy and strong, or to get a new pastor that has to heal our church? Having lived through both scenarios, I will opt for the first one. AUMC is growing right now, and if we keep open minds, that will not change. Stuart is very excited about bringing new members into the church. One of his church members in Hickory has family members in High Point. She called to tell them that her wonderful preacher was moving to AUMC, and they needed to come hear him. One family has already visited twice, and they like our church. We are ready for exciting things to happen at AUMC!

Open hearts. Open minds. Open doors. We ARE the people of the United Methodist Church, and on June 30th, we will be able to prove that our hearts, minds, and doors are open. I am counting on you! The world is watching. Keep the faith. -Cheryl

On May 17th, Tyler Jackson (son of Donn & Rachel Jackson) along with 11,999 other US Marines were deployed to Afghanistan. There are very few resources for computers, phones, etc. Snail mail is going to be the only way to communicate except on rare occasions. Because of this, mail day

will definitely be a bright spot in a dust-clouded, very barren environment. We ask that you, pray for them daily and please write these guys a note or a card. Below you will find names and addresses for Tyler and a few of his friends. If you have a moment, a card, note or even a care package would be a blessing to them.

I learned quite a bit from my Service Officer school training. I now know how to find and fill out the correct forms for veterans to apply for benefits, their families, widows (or widowers), etc. The NC SO will assist me when I run into a problem. I was fortunate enough to make some new friends with

I hope I’m the first to wish you a Merry Christmas!I hope I’m the first to wish you a Merry Christmas!I hope I’m the first to wish you a Merry Christmas!I hope I’m the first to wish you a Merry Christmas!

Yes, I know we’re very early in the season...and no, I’m not trying to rush the seasons! BUT, there is something I would like for us to do that will help us get ready for the

busy Christmas Season before the busy Christmas Season gets here!

So, here’s what I would like for us to do: put together a collection of Christmas thoughts, (e.g., original poems, songs, prayers, stories...perhaps even some special memories) that would be appropriate to

share with other members of our church family.

What we will have when we are finished is a little booklet with a selection or reading for each day of Advent, written by and for the people of AUMC. AND, WE’LL BE SO PROUD OF OURSELVES!

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A WRITER TO DO THIS. YOU ONLY NEED TO LOVE. I PROMISE

THAT THE CHRIST OF CHRISTMAS...THE CHRIST OF THE CROSS… THE CHRIST OF RESUR-RECTION LIFE...WILL PROVIDE ALL THAT YOU NEED..ALL THAT YOU’LL EVER NEED.

Christmas In July!!

Hard to believe that it’s time to think about Christmas, but in order to collect, organize and ship our shoe boxes, we must begin early to ensure that the children we send them to receive them at Christmas time. Starting in July, we will begin to collect and put together Christmas Shoe Boxes for the Children in Armenia. The collection date for the completed boxes is October.

What you will need to make and donate a box:

 A plastic (6/quart) box with a lid.

A note of greeting and encouragement.

Enclose $5 for the transportation cost of each box. (Make checks to: WNCC Treasurer and mark for AGAPE-Xmas Boxes).

Choose the age level and sex of the child the box will be prepared for (i.e., 5 year old boy).

Each Sunday School Class will receive a list of items to purchase for the boxes.
