We hope that you will enjoy getting acquainted with our uni-versity of applied sciences and hear some of our students’ own stories about their educations, how they are combining work with studies and about their plans for the future.

If you are curious about joining us at Arcada you should also make sure to stop by our web pages at arcada.fi for equal parts information and inspiration. There you will not only find more detailed information about our degree program-mes and the application and admission process, but also about student life as an adult and how studying towards a master’s degree is both a rewarding process for you and a good investment for your employer.

Welcome to the University of Applied Life!

WHAT IS A MASTER’S DEGREE FROM A UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES?A master’s degree from a university of applied sciences is intended for practitioners in working life, who wish to deepen and broaden their professional skills. It is also an ideal preparation for those aiming to take on managerial roles. To be eligible to apply you need a bachelor’s degree as well as a minimum of three years of relevant work experience. In the labour market a master’s degree from a UAS qualifies you for the same position as the equivalent degree from a university, and also qualifies you for further studies towards a licentiate degree or a PhD.

STUDY WHILE WORKINGThe studies are part-time, which allows you to study along-side full-time employment. The extent of the degree pro-grammes is either 60 or 90 credits (ECTS), which means that they can be completed in 1,5–2,5 or 2–4 years. The education is web-based but it also includes lectures, work-shops and seminars. Scheduled tuition takes place mainly after 4 p.m. on weekdays and between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturdays. The courses are taught entirely in English.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A NEW CHALLENGE?Are you ready to take on new tasks

and to shoulder bigger responsibili-

ties at your work place? Have you

spent a few years in working life and

are looking forward to new excit-

ing opportunities and a competi-

tive edge in the labour market? If

so, a master’s degree from Arcada

might be exactly the stepping-

stone that you are looking for. We

offer you all the tools needed for

finding your own path and tak-

ing the next step in your career.

“It’s easy to stay motivated when you’re studying something that translates directly to your work and gives you tools to take on the challenges you’re facing,” Media Management student Jose Sánchez says. With graduation just around the corner he is now turning the page to the next chapter of his career.

”IT’S TIME TO PUT WHAT I’VE LEARNT TO THE TEST”

Handling new technologies, building brands rather than selling products, making the transition from traditional media to the web – during his years in the business Jose Sánchez has found that the only constant in media is that nothing ever stays the same.

Much has happened since Jose arrived from Spain to Finland more than eight years ago. At the helm of his own company Kinetic Pixel he’s produced videos for companies such as FOX TV, Omegawave and Anna Ruohonen Paris, to name just a few. Now, just as he is about to wrap up his studies in Media Management at Arcada, he finds himself as the brand-new head of video at the marketing agency

Zeeland in Helsinki. “The studies are meant to prepare you to be a manager in media, and that’s exactly what I’ve become at one of the big-gest marketing companies in the country. I’m really looking forward to this challenge and also to get to put everything I’ve learnt during my master’s studies to the test.”

A STEPPING STONEApplying to Arcada was a decision Jose made a few years ago. Life as an entrepreneur was rewarding, but the time had come for new challenges and master’s studies felt like the perfect stepping stone. “Finland is an international country, but still I’m con-vinced that professional life is easier here if you have a Finnish degree. Looking at my options there were two main reasons why Arcada was the most attractive one. First off, the courses cover such a wide range of topics. I was confident in the content production side of things, but I’ve no education when it comes to business. To be honest I’ve always hated economics, but it was actually really interes-ting to dig deeper into that bit and I’ve learnt a lot. On the other hand, there were those of my classmates who come from business backgrounds who instead appreciated wide-ning their horizons with media production studies.” Another thing Jose has appreciated is the programme’s focus on leadership. “I did manage rather big teams of people when I was running my own company, but I never had any official train-ing. Considering my new position I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out what my leadership style will be.” The second reason Jose chose Arcada was reading about the degree programme’s close ties to working life. “Finding out that there has been guest lecturers from companies like Active Ark made me feel really confident about the education. Now we’ve had visits from a former director of YLE and experts from various marketing agen-cies. One lecture I especially remember was in media law by a Rovio employee. It’s inspiring when people talk and you just want to soak up every single word they say!”

INDEPENDENT STUDIES Jose points out that you have to be disciplined and plan well to get the most of the studies while working at the same time. Having worked as an entrepreneur managing his own company there was never such a thing as idle hands. “For me it has been a perfect fit meeting up about twice a month at Arcada and that the rest of the studies have taken place on-line. Just be prepared to study hard and, most of all, independently. Always remember that when you’re studying at a master’s level you are doing it for you own sake and for your own future.”

Are you looking for tools to manage the rapidly changing media industry? Do you find yourself in the media industry struggling to see the bigger picture? New technology and changing consumer behaviour offer unlimited opportunities for those able to respond to the creative and managerial challenges. A media manager today does not nec-essarily have an educational background in media or culture. We believe that a successful media man-ager needs to have a multidisciplinary understand-ing of media, based on economics, technology and culture.

The Master’s Degree Programme in Media Man-agement at Arcada presents you with real-life cases and projects useful to a manager in any media-related company. On Arcada’s modern premises you can apply your knowledge hands-on.

Strategies and innovations in media are intimately linked to research and development. An important part of the curriculum is to plan and conduct your own development project in the form of a master’s thesis. During this process you will learn to identify problems, ask relevant questions and report and communicate your findings in a way that meets the academic standards and is relevant to the indus-try. The aim of the thesis project is to advance the operations or management methods of a creative company or content industrial actors in general. In other words, your master’s education can be seen as a wise investment for your employer, if you are currently in the business.

“The Nordic angle was the main reason I applied to the programme,” second-year International Business Management student Charlotta Jakobsson says. “The competences you gain through your studies open many doors and for me they will hopefully lay the groundwork for taking on new responsibilities at my work place.”

”NEW PERSPECTIVES ON MANY ASPECTS OF BUSINESS”

“Studying as an adult is quite a different experience,” Charlotta Jakobsson says. “Everything you read and hear is filtered through your own experiences, which makes for really interesting discussions.”

Charlotta Jakobsson has barely had time to settle at her new job. Her business cards now tell you that she is a project co-ordinator with the Prysmian Group in Kirkkonummi. “My studies have given me new perspectives on many aspects of business and there is no doubt that a master’s degree is an advantage in the labour market. Many of my

classmates study to become qualified to apply for manager positions at new firms. I, on the other hand, am happy with where I’ve now landed and my focus is first and foremost on developing my professional skills. That said, it would be interesting to work in another Nordic country someday.”

EXTERNAL EXPERTISEA key point for Arcada’s degree programme in International Business Management is that our neighbouring Nordic markets offer great opportunities for any Finnish company aiming at expanding its business, and that understanding the differences between our business cultures gives a signifi-cant competitive advantage. “The lectures are held both by experts from Arcada and guest lecturers such as business executives from various companies. Their input, and the following discussions, gives you so much more than just reading books ever could.” If Charlotta was to choose one highlight of her studies so far, it would be her role as project manager for the study and benchmarking tour that took her and her group to Oslo, Gothenburg and Copenhagen in late autumn 2013. Three intense days were spent visiting with companies and organi-sations, and the response from the students was so positive that similar trips are planned to become a permanent fixture in the degree programme. “We organised the trip ourselves and contacted com-panies that we felt would bring something interesting to the table. It was hard work but an extremely rewarding experience. I’m still amazed at how open they all were when talking about both their recipes for success and their failu-res. The contrast felt huge when you’re used to dealing with rather tight-lipped Finns! It was also a great opportunity to get to know the group better. We come from many different countries and professional backgrounds, and we learn a lot from each other.”

STUDYING AS AN ADULTAt first Charlotta was hesitant if she would find the time to combine work and family with studies. In the end it was her husband that convinced her to give it a go. She now spends about two evenings and one Saturday per month at Arcada while the rest of the studies are handled on-line. ”Sure, you have to be good at time-management and be prepared that the studies are quite hard. But I have to say I really enjoy studying as an adult, and I would recommend it to anyone. More life and work experience means that you question the material and your teachers much more than when you were younger. You don’t accept anything as an absolute truth anymore, but rather see it as an opening for an interesting discussion. That is the whole point, of course. And that’s how you really learn.”

Arcada is the only University of Applied Sciences in Finland with a master’s degree programme in English which focuses on the Nordic business environment. If you or your employer view the Nordic market as an interesting opportunity for personal or business growth, then this degree is what you are looking for. The Nordic business environment is a natural context for Finnish companies to either start or to develop their international business activities. Knowledge of cultural similarities and differences is an important aspect of managing businesses in this region.

The degree programme is also intended for business-oriented individuals who seek to acquire deeper knowledge of marketing, digital marketing, supply chain management and leadership. Employers of an applicant can also benefit from the degree programme by being engaged in the master’s thesis project, which can be tailor- made to suit the employer´s needs.

After graduating from this master’s degree pro-gramme you will be able to establish and lead business activities in any Nordic country. The strong emphasis on combining practical skills with theoretical knowl-edge gives you all the tools required for advancing your existing career or embarking on a new one.

Studies are part-time and last for 2-3 years. In other words, you can study while working. The programme also offers you the possibility to conduct part of your studies at a Nordic partner university in Sweden, Nor-way, Denmark or Iceland.

Did you know that the European Union has set a goal for 2050 in which CO2 emissions relating to real estate energy consumption will be cut by 90 percent? This ambitious energy and climate target means that we now face a monumental task of finding new and sustainable solutions for future development and refurbishment of buildings. Traditional deep renovations are, however, far too expensive and thus new approaches are needed.

This is why Arcada, in co-operation with leading partner institutions in Europe and the rest of the world, is preparing to launch a new master’s degree programme in Real Estate Energy. The programme is aimed at professionals in the field of energy, construction or HVAC engineering looking to gain competence and knowledge to tackle these new challenges. The foundation of the degree programme is sustainable refurbishment, both in terms of financial and environmental issues. The comprehensive curriculum covers topics such as: The future directions of energy and climate, with focus on energy resources, energy politics on a global level, climate change, renewable energy technologies and electric grid issues; Energy diagnosis of real estate and renova-tions, with focus on both energy efficiency and comfort; Sustainable development of real estate to meet the en-ergy and climate target of 2050; and financial, project and change management of real estate renovations.

BLENDED LEARNINGScheduled tuition takes place at Arcada typically between 2 and 5 days a month (mainly in the evenings and on week-

Any candidate with at least three years of relevant work expe-rience and a suitable bachelor’s degree in energy, HVAC or building construction engineering can apply.

More information will be presented at arcada.fi

The Master’s Degree Programme in Real Estate Energy focuses on high precision solutions. As a student you will, for example, benefit from and learn to utilize the results of Arcada’s applied research, such as the ground-breaking U-value meter which measures a building’s energy leakage.
