If YOUR CHILD is If YOUR CHILD is FALLING BEHIND in SCHOOL FALLING BEHIND in SCHOOL MASTER-MIND = SUCCESS! What is Master-Mind? Master-Mind is a pro- gram developed by Rabbi Eliyahu Shain in 2005, to ad- dress the growing problem of children failing in yeshiva and abandoning the Torah Way of Life. These children often lack confidence and basic skills such as reading and math, and certain- ly, the ability to navigate the Talmud and other complex works. An Example: Yanky does great in the lower grades, mastering the Alef-Beis, Chu- mash, and Mishnayos, and performing well all around. Surprisingly, as he moves on to the higher grades and approach- es high-school, there is a change. He begins falling behind in class and act- ing up. His teachers want him to be left back or suspended. Yanky’s parents, of course, are shocked that their son, who always did so well in school, is now on the verge of being kicked out. What’s Missing? Yanky has an excellent memory, but his comprehension skills are weak. When he was learning Alef-Beis and Chumash, he didn’t really understand that a certain letter was an Alef, or that Vayomer means “And He said,” but rath- er remembered what the teacher said, and matched image and sound up like a memory game. When his class started learning Gemorah, memory was no lon- ger enough. Yanky had to understand the logic of the various cases, the rea- soning behind the arguments, and the explanations of the Meforshim. He had to comprehend, and comprehension skills were what Yanky was lacking. The Usual Approaches Many parents today spend thousands of dollars over many years, on tutors, therapists and medications, and still their child leaves high school with neither skills for living nor passion for learning! The problem is that the usual solutions only address the symp- toms, while ignoring the root causes. A teacher may say, “Rivky is hav- ing trouble with math...get her a tutor.” A Rebbe may suggest, “Moishie can’t sit still in class--put him on medication!” A tutor is fine if the child needs a bit of extra individual attention, but if the child has a bigger problem, such as an inability to focus, the tutor is probably incapable of addressing the problem. cqa MASTER-MIND is in the Heart of Crown Heights, at 390 Kingston Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11225 (next to Rabbi Shain’s Shul) Call Rabbi Shain at: (718) 705-7164 or (917) 969-6854 Visit our Website at www.master-mind.org e-mail: [email protected] Power Chumash! MASTER-MIND = SUCCESS!

What is Master-Mind?

Master-Mind is a pro-gram developed by Rabbi Eliyahu Shain in 2005, to ad-dress the growing problem of children failing in yeshiva and abandoning the Torah Way of Life. These children often lack confidence and basic skills such as reading and math, and certain-ly, the ability to navigate the Talmud and other complex works.

An Example: Yanky does great in the lower grades, mastering the Alef-Beis, Chu-mash, and Mishnayos, and performing well all around. Surprisingly, as he moves on to the higher grades and approach-es high-school, there is a change. He begins falling behind in class and act-ing up. His teachers want him to be left back or suspended. Yanky’s parents, of course, are shocked that their son, who always did so well in school, is now on the verge of being kicked out.

What’s Missing? Yanky has an excellent memory, but his comprehension skills are weak. When he was learning Alef-Beis and Chumash, he didn’t really understand that a certain letter was an Alef, or that Vayomer means “And He said,” but rath-er remembered what the teacher said, and matched image and sound up like a memory game. When his class started learning Gemorah, memory was no lon-ger enough. Yanky had to understand the logic of the various cases, the rea-

soning behind the arguments, and the explanations of the Meforshim. He had to comprehend, and comprehension skills were what Yanky was lacking.

The Usual Approaches

Many parents today spend thousands of dollars over many years, on tutors, therapists and medications, and still their child leaves high school with neither skills for living nor passion for learning! The problem is that the usual solutions only address the symp-toms, while ignoring the root causes. A teacher may say, “Rivky is hav-ing trouble with math...get her a tutor.” A Rebbe may suggest, “Moishie can’t sit still in class--put him on medication!” A tutor is fine if the child needs a bit of extra individual attention, but if the child has a bigger problem, such as an inability to focus, the tutor is probably incapable of addressing the problem.

In fact, over reliance on tutors can do the child a disservice, because in adult life s/he has to be able to learn in group situations, where tu-tors are not available! As for medication--- it’s cer-tainly necessary for people with se-vere disorders (e.g. schizophrenia, bi-polar, etc.) but when it comes to a child who has trouble concen-trating in class, medication is a very extreme way of dealing with the problem. Such approaches can break both your heart and your bank account.

How Is MASTER-MIND

Different? It works—quickly, pleas-antly, and permanently! The child’s skills are cognitively developed; s/he will not have to depend on his/her memory. We administer a com-prehensive evaluation aimed at discovering the root problems asso-ciated with the child’s lack of prog-ress. He or she may need a simple change in diet. Perhaps the child never developed good information-gathering & organizing skills. He or she may have trouble focusing their eyes, despite scoring 20/20 on an eye chart. Hebrew reading can be more burdensome for the eyes than English, because of its use of nekudos, instead of vowel letters, making the text “busier”! Once we determine what the problems are, we set about correcting them. We can address a wide range of issues, including ADHD, Dyslexia, Read-

ing, Penmanship, Grammar, Com-prehension, Math, Thinking Skills, and More.

How Long Does the Program Take?

What Does it Cost? The evaluation lasts from 2 to 4 hours and costs $350. The du-ration & cost of the actual program depends on the particular child in question, but most children require not more than 3-6 weeks to bring them up-to or beyond their grade level. They are then able to excel in school and in life, with Jewish pride and confidence!

The Time is Now! The skills we teach can be learned at any age, if there is a desire to improve. Nevertheless, it cannot be stressed enough that the ages 10 to 18 years are of critical importance! As a child struggles in school, the anger and frustration build up like steam in a pressure cooker. By the time the child reaches young adulthood, s/he is so cynical and alienated, and has been exposed to so many unclean influences, that it is almost impossible to change his/her attitudes. As a wise parent, do not de-lay in giving your child the learning skills that Master-Mind develops!

MASTER-MIND = SUCCESS!

Some Testimonials

“WOW! I never believed I would be able to figure these things out by myself.”

Y.S. age 15, Los Angeles, CAafter 3 weeks in Master-Mind

“Doctors and special-ed professionals warned me that my 7-year old would never be able to read even when he is 20. MASTER-MIND was like a MIRACLE. MY SON CAN NOW READ!”

A Happy Mother, Brooklyn, NY

“Our 12 year old daughter was borderline autistic. She was not able to keep up with the pace of her class. In fact, we were afraid to let her cross a one-way street alone. Master-Mind helped her tremendously. Not only can she cross the street by herself, she also has a good understanding of the material being taught in class.”
