The yachting world once again gravitates to Dubai as the city celebrates its 21st international boat show.

Rising up to the occasion, Arabian Yachts has come up with a special pre-boat show cover-age that includes a special feature about Nour Al Sayyed, architect and head of Design and Pro-duction at the UAE-based Al Marakeb Boat Manufacturing Co., who by far is among the very few women directly involved in the construction of a sea vessel, a feat traditional held by men.

We also have Arif Oomer, director at IMG Boats, a Dubai-based manufacturer of day and fishing boats founded in 2008, who tells us how the Dubai International Boat Show has, over the years, helped local entrepreneurs develop their own boat-building companies. Noteworthy is that DIBS will, for the first time, be having its Made in the UAE pavilion.

Erwin Bamps, Gulf Craft chief operating officer tells us how today’s market has been re-placed by newcomers who are more mature, while Ferretti Group shares its assessment of the global yachting industry.

Come mingle with nature at Fraser Island in the Destination section, and learn for yourself why the aboriginal natives call this place ‘K’gari’ or paradise.

In all, this edition should be as exciting as DIBS itself. Read on.

Abu Dhabi will host the third 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race stopover in December next year.

Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), which brought the “Everest of Sail-ing” to the Arabian Gulf for the first time in 2012 and is behind its return, has also confirmed its Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team will join the 2014/15 campaign. The outfit will again be skip-pered by Britain’s double Olympic medalist, Ian Walker, who led the Arabian entry to a number of Leg and In-Port wins on its maiden title tilt in

the last edition.“Our involvement with the Volvo Ocean Race

captured the imagination of our people, who have strong maritime heritage links,” said His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman, TCA Abu Dhabi. “The legacy of the last race is an increase in the breadth of sailing and watersport facilities available, which is some-thing we will build on over this second outing.

“In 2012 over 120,000 visitors joined in the stopover celebrations at our dedicated water-

front race village – and we will be looking to build on our reputation of delivering a stand-out stopover experience that is talked about long after the fleet has left.”

Abu Dhabi made waves on the global sailing scene with its hosting of the world’s premier offshore sailing race in January 2012. The event galvanised the emirate’s watersports industry with a wealth of sailing centres, yacht charter companies and state-of-the-art marina facilities coming online over the last 12 months, with more expected.

TCA Abu Dhabi believes the return of the “Everest of Sailing” and its Emirati development programme, which saw Abu Dhabi Ocean Rac-ing’s UAE national crew member Adil Khalid become the first Arab to competitively circum-navigate the world, will re-energise the emirate’s credentials as a world-class watersports destina-tion.

“This second campaign will further galvanise the emirate’s grass-roots sailing development and again give us a global platform on which to pro-mote our deep-rooted maritime heritage,” added Sheikh Sultan.

Abu Dhabi’s 2014 stopover will once again be focused on the purpose built Destination Village – the size of eight football pitches - on the city’s stunning Corniche breakwater.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing then enjoyed notable successes as the first Arabian challenger in the Volvo Ocean Race, with success in the UK’s test-ing Rolex Fastnet race, three In-Port Race victo-ries, including one in front of 23,000 race fans in the UAE capital, as well as a memorable win in the high-profile, ‘blue-riband’ transatlantic Leg 7 between Miami, USA and Lisbon, Portugal.

“Abu Dhabi staged a truly original and mas-sively appealing stopover during the last edition, with its own unique feel, and its return to the campaign will strengthen the legacy of the race in the city and the country,” said Volvo Ocean Race CEO Knut Frostad.

“I’m sure Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing will be among the challengers for overall honours this time. This announcement marks the beginning of another chapter for sailing in the United Arab Emirates.”

Abu Dhabi will welcome the Volvo Ocean Race fleet on Leg 2 from Recife, Brazil, after it departs from its starting port of Alicante, Spain. Leg 2 is expected to take a month to sail.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing is the third team an-nounced for the 12th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, following the SCA All-Women’s Team and a Recife-backed outfit.

Further host city announcements are due over the coming weeks, with the final route, including sailing distances and expected dates, to be un-veiled by late-February.

Nord Stream Race 2013 to cover 800 nautical miles non-stop

The Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg, Russia (SPBYC), and the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV) has announced that the next edition of the Nord Stream Race will be held in Septem-ber 2013, where over 800 nautical miles will be covered in a non-stop race through the Baltic Sea from Flensburg, Germany to Saint Petersburg, Russia. The race will be open to the Gazprom Swan 60 Class and Yachts under ORC handicap.

The race will start in the Flensburg Fjord, leav-ing Bornholm to port and will follow the route of the Nord Stream Pipeline to the North-East of the Baltic Sea, crossing the waters of Germany, Poland, Denmark, Lithunia, Latvia, Estonia, Swe-den, Finland and finally Russia and will bring par-

ticipants together from all over Europe.A match race in the Sail Racing Arena of Flens-

burger Förde for the Gazprom Swan 60 Class will be held prior to the race. The first Nord Stream Race start for the ORC Division B will be on Sept. 15, 2013. The second start will follow on the next day with the Gazprom Swan 60 Class.

Ulrich Lissek, Director of Communication Nord Stream said, “After last year’s success the Nord Stream Race is established as an annual exciting race through the Baltic Sea. 2013 has a new racing format lined up and it is our aim to encourage all nations to get involved in this pres-tigious race along the Nord Stream pipeline.”

“Racing 800 nautical miles non-stop in the

northern hemisphere in September is encourag-ing and challenging. The finish in Saint Petersburg after approximately four to six sailing days will be breath-taking for the sailors.” said Alan Green, NRV Race Officer, prior to the release of the Notice of Race.

The trophy for the Gazprom Swan 60 Class, donated by the Yacht Club of Saint Petersburg, will be the prize for the Swan 60 division. An additional trophy for the ORC fleet will be de-signed via an art competition between artists from Germany and Russia, to be announced in March.

The Nord Stream Race’s inaugural edition was in October 2012.

The world’s marine industry players have arrived in Dubai for the 21st edition of this Middle East gateway city’s interna-tional boat show, bringing with them the

latest in their product line and confident that the Gulf, which is teeming with high net worth individuals, would once again deliver on its promise of multi-million dollar deals.

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates—with its seemingly bottomless oil and gas reserves—are among the world’s top 10 countries having the highest density of ultra-wealthy households, according to Boston Consulting Group, a US-based global manage-ment strategy firm serving as adviser to many businesses and governments.

Moreover, 55 percent of the world’s top 20 yachts currently have Gulf owners, according to

official sources. This at hand, 11 super yacht builders have

joined this year’s Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS)—AMELS, Benetti, CRN, Fincantieri, Hees-en, Lürssen, Mondo Marine, Oceanco, Palmer Johnson, Sanlorenzo and Trinity. Mondo Marine and Palmer Johnson are first-timers.

DIBS also attracts wealthy buyers from Asia, particularly India, China and Turkey, which have seen a boom in the number of USD millionaires and extremely wealthy individuals. According to a 2012 GCC and regional boating market report by marine industry consultancy Mike Derrett Marine, the strong business and social connec-tions between India, the Gulf States and Europe have resulted in many Indians being exposed to the growing boating lifestyles in these markets with these individuals eager to purchase luxury boats.

Trixee Loh, Senior Vice President of Dubai World Trade Centre, organiser of Dubai Interna-tional Boat Show, said DIBS is “synonymous with luxury yachting, and is the perfect opportunity for superyacht builders to market their high-end products to a burgeoning audience.

“The lure of seeing these multi-million dollar superyachts at close range appeals to a range of leisure boating enthusiasts, whether they are a high-end prospective buyer or a first-time visi-tor.”

She said DIBS will this year have a “Super Yacht Experience pavilion” which she stressed, “supports the growing demand for superyachts

in this lucrative market from regional buyers.”

PlatformThe show has over 563 international compa-

nies and brands participating, exhibitors from more than 49 countries and debut appearances from Malta, Armenia and Malaysia. The United States, Turkey and Italy have increased their presence with Turkey having the biggest con-firmed exhibition space.

“The annual DIBS is among the world’s very best platforms for Turkish companies like ours to sell to Gulf buyers of luxury leisure marine products and services. As Turkey has expanded its exhibition space by more than eight times this year, Vicem Yachts has also increased its presence significantly, in line with our belief that there is demonstrated demand for su-peryachts of our calibre in the Middle East,” Sebahattin Hafizoglu, Founder and Chairman of Vicem Yachts, said.

The United States and Italy have increased their total exhibition space by 110-percent and 47-percent respectively. A new Florida pavilion signifies a greater demand for American-made products and leisure crafts, with a 200-percent increase in products overall from the United States. Enterprise Florida, the official economic development organisation for the state of Florida, returns to the show after a three-year hiatus.

Manny Mencia, Senior Vice President of In-

ternational Trade Development for Enterprise Florida, said the Middle East “remains a region of great significance to the State of Florida and the exporters in Florida as evidenced by our an-nual partnership in the Dubai International Boat Show.

“Florida’s marine industry remains one of the pivotal economic drivers in the state and our presence at the show underscores the confi-dence our businesses have for the region.”

He said many Florida exporters have availed of the export programmes that the state gov-ernment has offered “and we are confident that

these initiatives will lead to fruitful and mutual-ly-beneficial partnerships in the region.”

OpportunitiesFor his part, Dr Ferdinando Fiore, Italian

Trade Commissioner for the UAE, said the Gulf country’s pleasure boating industry “offers vast opportunities for Italian manufacturers of lux-ury yachts, leisure boats and marine equipment, driven by an increasingly affluent population and an extensive shoreline.”

The boat show, he said, “has always been a huge success for Italian exhibitors,” adding that

the “high level of visitors and the presence of numerous trade operators have proved, over the last few years, of the validity of the event.”

For his part, Jimmy Rivers, Vice President of Trinity Yachts, said DIBS “provides an ideal plat-form to tap into the Middle East luxury boating market and build relationships with potential buyers.”

“We anticipate a strong response from poten-tial buyers in the region this year,” he said.

Trinity Yachts have gained recognition as one of the world’s elite builders of custom su-peryachts of high quality craftsmanship, state-of-the-art construction and engineering tech-niques acquired from many years of experience in the industry.

Marcel Onkenhout, Chief Executive Officer of Oceanco—one of the world’s finest luxury large yacht builders with the distinction of having built the largest yachts in Holland and having several 80 to 110m projects under construction—said DIBS’ “exclusive location, select set-up and high profile visitors afford us the opportunity to promote our yachts and reach local and world-wide potential buyers.”

ShowcaseMeantime, renowned superyacht manufac-

turer, Lürssen, which is among the makers of some of the world’s largest yachts including the 155 metre-long ‘Al Said’, owned by Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman, is present at DIBS “to showcase our latest models, and inform visitors about the recent developments and innovations in shipbuilding,” said Michael Breman, Sales Di-rector, Lürssen.

“The event allows us to meet the demand for our luxury superyachts within the Middle East region,” she added.

DIBS will be held at the Dubai International Marine Club – Mina Seyahi from March 5-9, 2012 and will be open to trade visitors and the general public from 3pm – 9.30pm daily. The event has attracted more than 26,000 visitors, 5,000 VIPs and high net worth individuals.

Page 19: Arabian Yachts March 2013

17Local boatbuilding industry’s growth attributed to DIBS

The UAE’s boat building industry has grown through the years because of the annual Dubai Interna-tional Boat Show.

This according to a local boat manufac-turer who told Arabian Yachts the interna-

tional exposure that UAE gets as a result of DIBS has made it possible for the local marine industry to flourish.

“DIBS has a heritage that is unsurpassable and is by far the quintessential boat show for the Middle East,” said Arif Oomer, director, IMG Boats, a Dubai-based manufacturer of day and fishing boats founded in 2008.

“The show has also made it possible to give the local boating industry global exposure, in turn ensuring success,” Oomer added, noting that this is evident from the large range of products local boat makers have that can compete on a global level.

ExposureThe exposure this year has been increased as

DIBS organizers announced that for the first time in its 21-year history, the show will feature a dedicated Made in the UAE Pavilion to host the country’s top up-and-coming boat builders.

Companies participating in the pavilion include Julfar Craft, Legacy Yachts and Ocean Boats. The display area has been introduced to demonstrate the growing extent of the Emirates’ nautical manufacturing ability, which is demonstrated by the UAE’s 40 percent growth in boat sales in 2012 over the figures for 2011, according to a 2012 GCC and regional boating market report by ma-rine industry consultancy Mike Derrett Marine.

The Made in the UAE Pavilion is sponsored by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry,

which aims to promote the growth of the coun-try’s small to medium enterprises in the boat-building industry, facilitate their break through into international markets and replicate the suc-cess of larger manufacturers in the UAE.

Over the years, larger UAE-based manufac-turers have seen great success internationally, such as Al Hallami Group, Integrity Yachts and Emirates Boats. Gulf Craft, having celebrated its 30 year anniversary in 2012, is one of the most internationally recognised pioneers of UAE luxury yachts and fiberglass boats and a member of an elite circle of superyacht builders worldwide. Gulf Craft has a presence in major international boat-ing markets through its Majesty Yachts, Oryx and Silvercraft brands, and has an annual production capacity of around 500 craft.

Cautious Meantime, Oomer said local boat manufactur-

ers have a market in the region. “However,” he said, “buyers are now more cautious of what they are dealing with.

“The relationship now extends to getting in-depth knowledge about the company and the technical aspects of the boats.”

Oomer said local boat manufacturers need to look at developing bigger boats because the market currently is in the larger boat sizes, and, at the same time, try to upgrade their current product range with advanced features.

“This,” he said, “would help differentiate their products from the competition.”

IMG boats are manufactured in a 7442 sq. m. modern factory in Al –Quoz, Dubai

The company has taken tournament fishing and family enjoyment to new heights with the introduction of its IMG 330, IMG360XF/XS, IM-G400XF/XS and IMG40 Cabin boat models and is constantly looking to enhance its pace-setting product line.

“Our fishing boats reflect the UAE’s proud sea-faring tradition,” Oomer said.

The company was founded by Ilyas & Mustafa Galadari. DIBS turns 21 this year.

EXCLUSIVE

Today’s market for boats has been replaced with new-comers who are “will-ing to absorb why buying one could be an alternative way to spend money,” said Erwin Bamps, chief operating officer of Gulf Craft, a UAE-

based yacht builder.Bamps told Arabian Yachts the years of

global recession and the uncertainty that went with it have passed, spawning conse-quently boat buyers with a “different atti-tude.”

“The industry was going through a little bit of a down period three or four years ago. Now that uncertainty passed away and people are coming to the market with a dif-ferent attitude, ‘Okay I have the money. I still have a job. My kids are okay. My house is safe. Everything is fine but should I be buying a boat? Convince me,’” Bamps said.

Bamps said Gulf Craft has “never sold as

many super yachts within the last four years.”“We have a very large clientele of boat buy-

ers in the last few years who have never had a boat before. So it’s not like maybe the boat buyers are those who have a lot a cash and they know boats for a long time.

“No it’s been strangely not. We see a lot of new buyers who have never had a boat before

We see a lot of people coming to boating now more mature, more educated, willing to absorb why this could be an alternative way to spend money,” Bamps said.

Bamps said big yachts, which cost approxi-mately US$6 million according to him, are “very high in demand,” as well as the smaller fishing boats and family cruisers.

“Super yachts are doing very well,” he said.

dubai Marina Yacht Club having high demand, GM says

This year will be the “best year yet” for Dubai Marina Yacht Club as it will see the comple-tion of both Mall Marina and West Bay Marina, the development of the rally program, the incorporation and introduction of a members’ concierge service and the addition of a new members area within the club, according to Jonathan Hind, general manager.

“We are looking to fully open Mall Marina by the end of March and west bay Marina should be fully on line by September,” Hind tells Ara-bian Yachts.

“The marina is doing great. We are experi-encing great occupancy, receiving some great feedback, developing more berths, completing dredging projects, developing the rally program, looking forward to the Dubai International Boat Show and generally enjoying things,” He added.

Hind said DMYC is “experiencing a high de-mand for berthing and with the two new areas

within the facility due to come on line, this is a great sign.”

DMYC, which has 550 berths all occupied as of presstime, is notably one of the most estab-lished marinas in the Middle East. It has four different marinas along the famous Dubai Ma-rina Canal—from the vibrant East Marina with its surrounding restaurants and towering build-ings to the quietness of West Bay Marina which is away form the busyness of the East end.

Furthermore, Mall Marina and Club House Marina offer a comfortable balance of con-venience and atmosphere. All marinas offer parking with buggy services, ice, berthing as-sistance, 24-hour security, membership to the Yacht Club and access to DMYC’s rally program which incorporates both water- and land-based rallies.

Hind said DMYC “has a very international clientele with owners from all over the world.”Jonathan Hind

Q & A

‘In the Middle East area, super yachts have always been successful: Lebanon, for instance, is at the moment one of the most interesting regions for Ferretti Group.’

— Stefano Campanelli, EMEA Sales Director Ferretti yachts

ARABIAN YACHTS: What is your assessment of the boating industry—globally and in the Middle East?

Stefano Campanelli: The yachting industry is recovering from a difficult economical period. These economic difficulties have continued in certain European markets, particularly in southern Europe, while in the Middle East area we are see-ing signs of a recovery, also thanks to our well established Ferretti Group dealer, Sea Pros.

Globally, Asia Pacific is one of the regions with the highest rate of growth for the luxury industry, as well as an attractive market for the “Made in Italy” brand and an area with great expectations. Attending for many years the main events in the Asia Pacific area, Pershing and Ferretti Group have been highly appreciated from professionals and Asian customers, winning for example the “New Arrival Award” at Hurun Best of the Best thanks to the Pershing 92’ slim profile and sporty perfor-mance.

In North America, the first international market for the nautical sector, Pershing and the whole Group continue to consolidate their presence through Ferretti Group of America, attending of course the nautical key events of this area, such as the Miami Boat Show and the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.

Coming to the South American market, Ferretti Group has been present in Brazil for over 20 years, obtaining a position of leadership, further consoli-dated in June 2011 with the opening of a facility in Sao Paulo, dedicated to the Brazilian market. The Group’s presence, through Ferretti Group America, then spreads throughout other Latin American countries, in particular Venezuela, Do-minican Republic, Colombia, Panama and Mexico.

AY: What is the trend—is it towards super yachts or mid-sized ones?

SC: It is difficult to draw a general trend be-cause the market depends on the area and on the clients’ tastes. In general during the years of economic difficulties since 2008, there has been a trend to larger yachts because this segment has been less affected by the economic recession. We are hopeful of more positive trends in smaller yachts as the European and US markets begin to recover.

In the Middle East area, super yachts have

always been successful: Lebanon, for instance, is at the moment one of the most interesting regions for Ferretti Group. In Lebanon we sold the brand new CRN 129 80-metre Chopi Chopi, officially launched last January. But also the mid-size yachts market is getting better, thanks to the work of the dealer Sea Pros, that recently sold in Lebanon the first Itama 45’ and the first Dolphin 74’ Cruiser, Mochi Craft’s flagship. Moreover, in the next months we’ll deliver the third unit of the brand new Ferretti 870, launched in Cannes 2012, and one Riva Duchessa 92’.

AY: There have been efforts in the Gulf to invest in the boating industry as it can be gleaned from ongoing marina projects and boat shows happening elsewhere around the region. Do you think the Middle East still has a long way to go in developing itself as a boat-ing destination and, as well coming up with its own world-class yachts? Why so?

SC: One key to the development of the yacht-ing industry in this region is the availability of infrastructure (marinas, etc.) and services that

support the yachting industry. As new infrastruc-ture projects come on stream, we expect to see a corresponding increase in yacht sales and the development of the Middle East as a yachting destination. The existence of world class logistics (Emirates, Etihad, Gulf Air) and accommodation are a sound base for this development.

AY: How long has Pershing been in the re-gion? In UAE? How has the market’s response been so far?

SC: Pershing has been present for more than 10 years in the UAE market. In 1998 Pershing joined the Ferretti Group and therefore it benefited from the dealer network of the Group, Sea Pros, which operates in this area from over 10 years.

AY: Why will there be no Pershings in this

year’s Dubai International Boat Show?SC: Ferretti Group will be present during the

show, but with no boats on display this year, through Sea Pros, its dealer in this Area, mainly because the most recently sold yachts are in other countries of this area.

Nour Al Sayyed, architect and head of Design and Production at the UAE-based Al Marakeb Boat Manufacturing Co., is by far among the very few women directly involved in the con-struction of a sea vessel, a feat traditional held by men.

She says of her job: “The journey of watching a concept develop from a sketch to a finished and functional build is very exciting, especially when the final product is a boat. At Al Marakeb, I get to be part of the journey of helping a client realise what they want, and bringing it to life. Better yet, I get to test it out at sea!”

Ms. Al Sayyed’s first introduction to Al Mar-akeb came as she was graduating from the school of Architecture at the American Univer-sity in Sharjah. Her fascination with structures, shapes and design impelled her to pursue higher education in Industrial Design from Florence Design Academy in Italy, returning to join Al Marakeb in 2008.

In this Arabian Yachts interview, Ms. Al Sayyed explains why she chose to be and as well offers some insights on the marine industry.

ARABIAN YACHTS: Not to typecast but boat

making has always been referred to as a man’s job. Why the interest in it?

Nour Al Sayyed: In recent decades, women have penetrated several industries that were predominantly a “man’s job”. Times have changed and women are well-respected peers in the work environment regardless of the field. Having said that, being a woman did pose certain challenges when working in a factory in this part of the world, but all works out with the right attitude. I was mostly drawn to boat design and building because it’s not your regular ‘9 to 5’. I find it all very exciting and interesting.

AY: How many boats have you designed? NAS: I have a few, maybe four to five, custom

projects that I had designed entirely before we decided to standardise our basic models. Along with my team, we have designed our three main models: Spartan 25, Dino 31, and Triton 35, and continue to design our new releases: Habbar 25 and Scylla 35. Of course, my design work extends to all the different personalisation requests that come with each boat order too; so to answer your question, my design skills are more or less involved in every boat Al Marakeb produces.

AY: Where do you draw inspiration when con-ceptualising a design?

NAS: I like to think of design as art with a purpose. While it’s important to maintain an aesthetic appeal to the final product, the design is also inspired by the functional vision of that product. To design a boat space you consider the fisherman, the water-sports enthusiast, speed fanatics, luxury seekers and the family who sim-ply wants to spend a day out at sea. That’s where the idea is born.

AY: Who were your influences in boat design-ing?

NAS: Having grown up in the GCC, and boat-ing being a favourite pastime to many around here – including my own father, it was easy to be enraptured by the activity itself. Essentially, I was invited to the idea of boat design by my friend, and founder of Al Marakeb, (Mr. Basel Shuhai-ber) as we were graduating from Architecture at the American University in Sharjah, and he had started designing his first boat.

AY: What do you think is the future of boat designs? Where is it headed?

NAS: Look how far we’ve come already. From a floating log to massive cruise ships, boats have come a long way since they first appeared in ancient civilizations. Throughout the ages they have served for transport of people and building materials, trade route vessels, warships and so on. Materials and technologies in boat building have also evolved over the centuries and will continue to do so. With the various tools available and developing technologies, the everlasting need for boats and the competitive spirit to do bet-ter, there is always potential for advancement in boat design.

The final look of the new 50-footer has been achieved by combining extreme pre-cision and creativity. A labour of love that has involved Marco Casali, the yacht de-

signer for Itama range, with AYT (Advanced Yacht Technology) and the Centro Stile del Gruppo Ferretti. Like the other boats in the new Itama line, the overall aim has been to develop certain aspects, while maintaining the immaculate har-mony that distinguishes all the craft in the Itama fleet.

The result is a modern 50-footer with a dis-tinctively sporting character, fitting perfectly between the Forty and the FiftyFive, and offering an original and ideal combination of a day-cruis-er and an open yacht. It can host up to 12 people and reach speeds of up to 34 knots thanks to its twin MAN 800 mhp engines.

The craft’s exterior also confirms the develop-ments that have been made in all the shipyard’s latest projects, including a higher bow and a lower stern that is smoothly, yet dynamically

curved with all the tension of a bow about to shoot an arrow.

A sleek, clean-cut design and carefully bal-anced deck space have been brought together in the Fifty with a new technological concept, in fact the new Fifty has been constructed using a lamination system for the infusion of the glass fibre components, which guarantees an improved weight-performance ratio.

Ideal balance What makes this craft particularly special,

however, is its capacity to offer an ideal balance between sporty sea performance and ultimate comfort. To achieve this, a classic Itama design has been restyled with specially designed solu-tions that guarantee ultimate cruising comfort and an even more luxurious onboard lifestyle.

Following this same approach the internal layout has also been completely redesigned with the VIP cabin returned to its classic Itama posi-tion in the stern. This sets the craft apart from

the other models in the shipyard’s new fleet by presenting owners with original space optimiza-tion solutions and distinctively refined fittings. These range from the particularly high ceilings in all three cabins to a layout that combines design logic and inventiveness, thanks to a painstak-ingly researched floor plan that marries ideally with the requirements of the craft’s shaft drive system.

AdvancedThe effect of expansion and the sense of free-

dom, already tried and tested on the FiftyFive, has been further developed in the Fifty. In addi-tion to the new and spacious dimensions of its stern area, the craft also boasts a roomy cockpit and a large aft deck that guarantees a very special, no-filter relationship with the sea in the classic tradition of the open yacht.

The spacious stern sundeck, specifically de-signed to exploit daytime livability to the full, leads onto the cockpit that features a typical Itama layout with a classic control panel and a

horseshoe-shaped sofa to the fore of the sun-deck. It is noticeable that the size of Itama Fifty cockpit is only slightly smaller if compared to bigger open yachts. The sofa is a particularly spe-cial as it can be transformed into a comfortable, forward-facing co-pilot’s seat.

The bimini fabric top with its electro-hydraulic, power-assisted drive mechanism allows the cock-pit to be completely covered or opened in just a few minutes, so the exteriors can be adapted to any climate quickly and easily.

The extendable gangplank for disembarking from the craft is anchored to the aft deck and doubles as a crane for towing and launching the craft’s tender or a jetski.

Stylish Similarly, while maintaining the style of previ-

ous Itama models, the Fifty’s interiors also offer an excitingly innovative choice of materials and furnishings.

The internal layout consists of three cabins all with ensuite bathrooms and a dinette and galley.

25 A R A B I A N

Page 28: Arabian Yachts March 2013

26

The Master and guest cabins are located in the bows and the VIP cabin in the stern.

On going below-decks you find the dinette in an extremely practical location on your left, with the galley neatly located on the right. The galley, which is subtly separated from the dinette by its wooden floor and the TV cabinet, is equipped with all the appliances needed to guarantee total comfort, including a fridge, oven and dishwasher.

Moving on from the living area towards the bows you come to the Master Cabin and Guest Cabin, which is fitted with twin beds. Both cabins have their own bathroom and separate shower cubicle. The VIP cabin is located in its classic po-sition in the stern and includes a direct stairway to the cockpit. In this way, larger space and more livability have been guaranteed, no mentioning privacy and comfort, sensibly enhanced. In fact, the owner’s guests can count on a more secluded area, deeply living the sea with no filters, the

feeling indissolubly tied to Itama.

SplendidThe splendid materials selected for the in-

teriors also emphasize the refined attention to detail and contemporary trends that contribute to making the Fifty an icon of modern “lifestyle” design. A special mention deserves the white painted oak, a wood, able to give to Itama Fifty the style easily recognizable on the architectures and the colors of Mediterranean islands. Wood has also been used for most of the furnishings, including the floors in the bathrooms and gal-ley, whereas in the cabins a selection of precious leather fittings, including the bed head and sur-round marry perfectly with the choice of carpets.

From the previews that have so far been re-leased, it is clear that this yacht succeeds in unit-ing exuberance and luxury, a powerful spirit and improved liveability in every detail.

Equipped with a twin 16v 2000 M93 1790kW MTU engine able to reach a maximum speed of 27 knots—at half load—and a cruising speed of 24 knots,

and with all the amenities of a modern and so-phisticated lifestyle, it’s no wonder why Ferretti Custom Line 97’, with its 29.7 metres and a smart and aggressive layout, has become a choice pick of the international jet set.

For one, the boat’s master cabin in the bow on the main deck has large windows on both sides and a chaise lounge, which allows for watching the sea while lying comfortably.

Also, the lower deck was designed such that it is able to provide up to four double cabins. Moreover, the Ferretti Custom Line 97’, has in-novative, wide open-view windows while the flybridge has a closable hardtop offering areas of sunshine and shade. The aft’s teak cover converts into a platform to facilitate access to the sea.

Inside, the internal fittings are all modern, and feature light, bright woods. The finishings come from the broad range of customisation choices available for the owner, side by side with the shipyard team’s architects.

Collaborations with the best Italian brands made it possible to dress up the boat with the most selected furnishing complements, such as the new Dedon weatherproof dining table and

chairs in the cockpit, which were hand-woven using a special fibre.

The range of fittings on board include a 32-inch plasma TV connected to the Radiomarine Audio-Video Media Server system, a multi-media platform which can support all the audio-visual supplies. In the master cabin and salon, an iPod docking station enhances the technological en-tertainment offer

The 97’ is likewise equipped with latest-gen-eration Naviop instrument, including innovative control systems that allow consumption, services and alarms to be monitored quickly and simply with touch screen commands. This solution pro-vides the crew with even more convenient access to onboard systems.

Cockpit The spacious cockpit, with a large table and

double bench for up to 10 people, has access to the salon, where there is a coffee table and dining area that can accommodate up to eight people. Continuing towards the bow one finds a large contemporary-style galley fitted with quartzite top and professional appliances.

Access to the crew cabins is amidships to avoid disturbing the owner and the guests, and is also convenient for reaching the galley, as well as the side doors for going outside or to the pilot

house. The bridge on the Ferretti Custom Line 97’ is

separated from the fly bridge by sliding glass doors. The fly bridge, for its part, has plenty of sunbathing space, which can be protected by the hard top, with a central opening to let in light or create convenient shaded areas.

Here a table with a wide bench and grill area provide another dining space and the opportu-nity to enjoy life in the open air at sea. The door at the stern provides access to a large garage, which has space for a 4.5 metre tender and a jet-ski that can be stored using the small davit on the fly bridge.

EnginesFour Mitsubishi ARG (Anti-Rolling Gyro) sta-

bilisers are fitted in the engine room as standard on Ferretti Custom Line maxi yachts. This system, installed exclusively for the European market on many of the group’s yachts, is able to reduce rolling by 50 percent.

Rolling is mainly responsible for discomfort when anchored offshore or in a port.

All the structural modifications of the Ferretti Custom Line 97’ comply with MCA Short Range specifications, the safety regulations issued by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency specifically for 24 to 38-metre maxi yachts to raise safety

standards and allow their use as charter yachts. From a technical point of view, compliance

with Short Range specifications involves making a number of construction adaptations that en-sure the yacht complies to high safety standards.

Ferretti Custom Line 97’ is a result of the close working relationship between Studio Zuccon International Project, the AYT - Advanced Yacht Technology, the Ferretti Group’s naval research and design centre, and the team of architects and designers at the Ferretti Group’s Centro Stile. It features a number of design solutions aiming to increase the space available to the owner and his guests.

This sporty glamour-inspired yacht integrates the flybridge concept with

the sporty lines of an open coupé to satisfy the demands of owners who, while not wishing to sacrifice the lines of a sporty yacht, prefer the convenience of a closed, air-conditioned upper salon.

The extended, aggressive line of SportRiva 56’ gives her a strongly dynamic appearance which, together with a number of highly innovative

solutions, makes this yacht an example of mod-ern design.

Her style, luxury, the valuable materials used and painstaking care taken over detail balance out the “futuristic” attributes. The resulting yacht, like all the shipyard’s models, still exudes the taste of Riva’s many years of tradition.

DeckThe deck features a large, external living area

complete with folding, teak table and two com-fortable sofas able to seat up to eight people,

whilst a central stairway provides easy access to the flybridge, featuring a second drive position and large sundeck.

Inside, is a relaxing ambiance resulting from the combination of the warm colours of the elm, bronze lacquering and leather inserts, and choice of matching fabrics and leathers.

Moreover, the different areas, unexpectedly large for a yacht of this size, have been stud-ied to guarantee more comfort and liveability. The salon, set at the height of the bridge deck, features a comfortable, full soft grain leather

creating a comfortable environment separated from the cockpit by a central crystal door which can open up completely to form a single, spa-cious, outdoor day area.

The master cabin, with en-suite bathroom, is set on the lower bridge at bow, whilst the two, twin-bedded guest cabins are set amidships. The left-hand cabin, providing direct access to the second bathroom which also acts as a day-head, features an extremely clever solution.

One of the two beds, which runs on tracks, can be set next to the other to form a double

bed. Moreover, both guest cabins feature a large window and double portholes, guaranteeing maximum lighting and providing the interiors with natural ventilation.

A second access to the lower bridge, separate to that of the cabins, leads to the galley, set at stern and linked by access to the crew cabin. It features an en-suite bathroom with shower and a cupboard which can be converted into a washer-dryer.

Dibba, Oman — A superb performance by Team AISM throughout the 15 days and 760 nautical miles of EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour has seen the Dubai-based crew sail to vic-tory in convincing fashion in the third edition of the region’s only long distance offshore race ahead of BAE Systems, which came in second, and EFG Bank (Monaco), third.

Nine world-class crews including a host of

elite sailors from the Middle East completed the unique sailing challenge and showcased endurance race around the coastline of four countries, covering seven legs between Bahrain and Muscat.

The culmination of three year’s development of offshore racing in the region, this season delivered on its promise of being the most com-petitive and successful yet involving some of the world’s and the region’s most accomplished sailors all competing in the ideal sailing condi-tions of the Arabian Gulf.

Brisk downwind conditions took the full fleet of nine Farr 30s home to The Wave, Muscat on the final leg, Feb. 25, 2013 providing the perfect conclusion to this year’s EFG Bank Sailing Ara-bia – The Tour.

The fleet leaving Mussanah Marina at dawn the morning of the leg was up to its full

strength with the return of Adil Khaled and his Team Abu Dhabi, following their grounding and helicopter rescue on leg two.

A fitting end to the event was that honours on the leg should go to French America’s Cup helmsman Bertrand Pacé and the crew of AISM who have constantly dominated EFG Bank Sail-ing Arabia The Tour 2013. Over the last two and a half weeks, they have won five of the seven offshore legs and set the tone for the in-ports when they claimed three out of three races in Doha. AISM won 2013 EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour by 10.25 points.

“We enjoyed this year’s event a lot,” said Pacé. “We have a good crew - everyone was very focused on winning this race. It is much easier when the guys are working like that because we have good speed, good navigation and tactics. This tour was much easier than the previous

years because there was less night sailing and more downwind. Conditions were similar to the Mediterranean this year with the thermal ef-fect. But still it is two weeks of racing, so it is still hard.”

The pressure was fully on Cédric Pouligny and the crew of BAE Systems, going into this final leg just 0.5 points ahead of a hungry Sidney Gavignet and EFG Bank (Monaco) and with Pacé always one to aggressively defend his overall lead. In fact Pacé’s dirty work was done for him by Gavignet who attempted to luff BAE Systems off the course. However he never quite suc-ceeded. In the end BAE Systems nosed ahead and although the two boats finished the leg in lowly seventh and eighth positions respectively, this was enough for them to take second and third places overall.

“We had more to lose than to gain, so basi-cally it was a bit of a match race,” said Pouligny.

“We had a very good start and were first at the upwind mark and then Bertrand Pace managed to pass us, but he was not really important. Sidney gained on us and was trying to make us go higher until we got separated from the fleet. We were in a difficult position, but we managed to have good speed and stay low.”

The EFG Bank (Monaco) skipper had a few regrets about how the leg had panned out: “We had a good race, but we should have gone and got them before the start line,” said Gavignet. “But it was a nice race, a nice fight with every-one.”

After knocking on the door of the podium throughout EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour, Mohsin al Busaidi and his Renaissance team finally came good on this leg taking third place behind Messe Frankfurt.

Attending the final prize giving at The Wave, Muscat was event sponsor George Catsiapis,

Managing Director of EFG Bank (Monaco), who has been following the event closely: “It was a stressful race with boats going aground - Abu Dhabi was the first victim and in a way they were the winners of the race because they showed the morale to come back and finish off the race. But it is the mixture of top interna-tional skippers and GCC sailors that is fantastic.”

David Graham, CEO of Oman Sail, organiser of the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour commented of this year’s event: “It has been amazing. The level of competition has gone up as has the overall standard of the event. I’m particularly pleased with the girl’s boat and that they have four Omani sailors on board and have shown moments of brilliance. We have had some really interesting conversations in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar, so I’m looking forwards to seeing who will be on the start line next year. And the media-side has gone amaz-ingly well.”

Graham believes that SATT next year will reach critical mass with more Gulf countries entered, 12-15 fully funded boats and a title sponsor.

“I am also particularly pleased that an Omani vision for the region, designed and managed this event, and we were able to get a presti-gious international bank to put their confident in them and this race. By every possible measure this year’s EFG Bank Sailing Arabia – The Tour has been an outstanding success and significant strides have been made towards our vision of encouraging the growth of sailing across the region and reigniting the rich maritime heri-tage of the Gulf. Today we congratulate all the teams. Tomorrow we start working towards next year. That is the legacy of this truly unique spectacle” concluded Graham.

Starlets of the show, regardless of where in the GCC they visited, have been Dee Caffari’s all-female crew on Al-Thuraya Bank Muscat.

Caffari, the first woman to have sailed single-handed around the world non-stop in both directions, said today’s leg was a fine conclusion to SATT, even though they just missed the po-dium: “We had great wind and good conditions and really close racing. It was intense and a re-ally good way to finish a great event. This was our chance to get on the podium and we missed it by just two gybes. On the finish line all the girls all burst into tears - I was quite emotional for them, but it shows just how much they wanted it – we wouldn’t have got that reaction two weeks ago.”

‘Significant’ investment poured to convert the facility into an all-day entertainment centre

YAS MARiNA comes of age

“All marine destinations have their own unique atmosphere and spirit, and the UAE is no dif-ferent,” says Cedric Le Rest, Yas Marina general manager, and this apparently is why the facility is currently undergoing refurbishment to convert it into a more exciting place before yearend in anticipation of increased occupancy.

Le Rest said Yas Marina had an unprecedented growth in 2012. “We’re seeing healthy growth in line with the growth of overall berths available. In terms of trends unique to the UAE, we have seen an increased in the number first-time boat owners as well as individuals who have an inter-est in boating, securing a berth before purchasing

the boat,” he told Arabian Yachts.

DIBSPart of the reason for the growth, Le Rest said,

is the annual Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS), the 21st edition of which is being held March 5 – 9 at Dubai International Marine Club – Mina Seyahi

“Our presence at DIBS yields many benefits for Yas Marina and has no doubt contributed to not only our growth in members and visitors, but also our profile internationally,” Le Rest said.

Le Rest declined to divulge the amount being spent on the Yas Marina project, saying only that the investment in the expansion is “significant.”

“It will benefit not only our members and visit-ing boat owners but also visitors to, and residents of Abu Dhabi, irrespective if they own a boat or not,” Le Rest said.

He said work started in the fourth quarter of 2011 and is due for completion in the third quar-ter of this year.

Vibrant transformationLe Rest added that when completed, the ma-

rina will be transformed into a vibrant dining and entertainment precinct with 10 food and bever-age outlets offering fantastic panoramic views of the marina from extended terraces, a children’s play area, interactive musical fountains, a ‘pedes-trianised’ promenade and a state-of-the-art new ‘captainiere’ with facilities for members.

“The project has been designed with something

for everyone from morning through till late night, offering affordable experiences both afloat and ashore,” Le Rest said.

Development of Yas Marina came on the heels of steady growth in the operations of the facil-ity, which last year saw a 150-percent increase in berth occupancy. Le Rest attributed this to the rise in the number of local boat owners as well as those coming to Abu Dhabi as the capital city’s international profile continues to grow.

“2012 was a fantastic year for Yas Marina as we welcomed more members than ever before. In line with the rise of local boat ownership in the UAE, most new members are either UAE residents, or those with strong UAE ties,” Le Rest said, add-ing that the marina has also seen an increase in members from the GCC region as well as other international destinations.

Slow? Some quarters claim marinas in the UAE have

been slow to pick up on berth occupancy, saying these facilities do not have the “holiday spirit” that other marina destinations have, which is why the refurbishment project.

Le Rest countered stressing, “I have over 22 years international marine industry experience, 14 of which have been here in the UAE. Based on my experience, I can say that all marine des-tinations have their own unique atmosphere and spirit and the UAE is no different.”

He noted that Abu Dhabi has an “outstanding calendar of sporting, cultural and community events that showcase and highlight a special spirit, unique to the UAE.

“During the F1 weekend in November as an example, the mood and atmosphere at the marina is electric and every year we receive an over-whelming amount of positive feedback from both visitors and members.

“Also, living in a multi-cultural society such as the UAE, we benefit from many different celebra-tions here as our members and visitors celebrate their own specific holidays.”

Yas Marina is operated and managed by Camp-er and Nicholsons Marinas. It opened in 2009 and has 175 berths which can accommodate boats from eight metres up to 150 metres. Annual berth rates start at AED 16,455.

Learn for yourself why the aboriginal natives call this place ‘K’gari’ or paradise.

Inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1992, Fraser Island, located along the south-ern coast of Queensland, Australia, is the world’s largest sand island at 1840 square

kilometres, and is where “one can never be as closer to nature,” as it has been oft-said.

The island has rainforests, eucalyptus wood-land, mangrove forests, wallum and peat swamps, sand dunes and coastal heaths. The sand formation developed and has been ac-cumulating for approximately 750,000 years on volcanic bedrock.

The earliest known name of the island is ‘K’gari’ (pronounced ‘Gurri’) in the Butchulla people’s language, which means paradise

According to Aboriginal legend, when hu-

mans were created and needed a place to live, the mighty god Beiral sent his messenger Yend-ingie with the goddess K’gari down from heaven to create the land and mountains, rivers and sea. K’gari fell in love with the earth’s beauty and did not want to leave it. So Yendingie changed her into a heavenly island.

The name Fraser Island comes from Eliza Fraser, a ship captain’s wife, and her story of survival from a shipwreck on the island. Eliza and her husband, Capt. Captain James Fraser, along with 18 crew, set sail from Sydney to Singapore on board the Stirling Castle in 1836. The voyage however prove ill-fated as the ship caught hole on coral while travelling through the Great Barrier Reef north of the island.

Make a long story short, the group managed to land on the island’s shore on lifeboats, but all eventually died except Eliza who lived among the local peoples and was rescued six weeks later by a convict, John Graham, who, owing to his ability to speak the Aboriginal language, was sent from the settlement at Moreton by the authorities there who had heard about Eliza’ plight, and negotiated her return.

Within six months, Eliza had married another sea captain. She moved to England and became a sideshow attraction in Hyde Park telling ever more lurid tales about her experiences with white slavery, cannibalism, torture and murder.

Activities include a four wheel drive next to the coloured sand cliffs of The Cathedrals or airplane ride on Seventy-Five Mile Beach, a bushwalk through rainforest growing from the sand and heathlands full of wild flowers, swim-

ming in mirrored lakes ringed with gold. One can also visit Lake McKenzie, picnic

next to turtles at Lake Allom, spot whales from Indian Head, discover the historic Maheno shipwreck in Happy Valley and see kangaroos, wallabies and possums on a bushwalk into the interior.

Explorer James Cook sailed by the island in May 1770. For a short period the island was known as Great Sandy Island. Today Fraser Island is a popular tourism destination with a resident population of 360 as of 2006.

The island can be reached by ferry from River Heads, which is south of Hervey Bay, to Kingfisher Bay and Wanggoolba Creek or Inskip Point to north of Rainbow Beach to Hook Point, or by chartered flight through Maroochydore Airport.

There are many campgrounds on Fraser Island

43 A R A B I A N

Page 46: Arabian Yachts March 2013

44with varying amenities and access. The main camping areas are: Dundubara Campground, Waddy Point campground, Central Station Tent Sites, Waddy Beach (tent only campsites), Corn-wells Break (large group site), One Tree Rocks camp zone (Eurong-One Tree Rocks), however there are others. Permits are required for camp-ing and also for vehicle access.

There are also various possibilities for over-night hiking on the island. A very beautiful and well cared-for trek is the 90 km long Fraser Island Great Walk. A shorter hike would be for example to start in Kingfisher Bay (ferry drop off) and head to Lake McKenzie, stay there for one night, and then hike back.

Towering satinay and brushbox trees are among the forest giants, some over a thousand years old, and so large they form distinct bands visible from scenic flights over the island. The variety of vegetation on Fraser is exceptional, ranging from mangroves to 200 year old kauri forests, and wallum heathlands that fill with wildflowers in the early Spring.

There are over 230 species of birds on the island—one of the largest and most varied in Australia. These include dotterels, pied oyster catchers, pelicans, terns and gulls often seen on the shoreline while overhead are magnificent birds of prey like the brahminy kites, white-breasted sea eagles, ospreys and peregrine fal-cons. In the heathlands are kingfishers, jabirus and brolgas, and one of Australia’s rarest birds the ground parrot.

There are also 25 species of mammal on Fraser Island. Isolation has ensured that Fraser’s dingoes are the purest breed in eastern Aus-tralia and consequently no domestic dogs are permitted on the island.

Other native mammals include wallabies, pos-sums, flying foxes and echidnas. The Dugong feed on seagrass beds, while sea turtles breed on some island beaches. Each year they make their migration to Fraser’s rocky headlands and protected coastline.

There are many campgrounds on Fraser Island with varying amenities and access. There are also various possibilities for overnight hiking. Moreover, the island is home to over 230 species of birds.

The OMEGA Constellation SednaSedna gold is the name OMEGA has given to a new alloy that stunningly blends three elements: gold, copper and palladium. It is an 18K rose gold, meaning that it has a minimum gold content of 75 percent. Sedna’s unique rose colour is a result, in part, of just the right proportion of copper: Its palladium content helps to ensure that the reddish hue of Sedna gold will be particularly long lasting. It takes its name from a trans-Neptunian object which astronomers called Sedna – the same name as an Inuit goddess who is said to live at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean. The surface of the orbiting object has been described as one of the reddest in our Solar System. The OMEGA Constellation Sedna is the first watch to be crafted in 18K Sedna gold. This lim-ited edition wristwatch seamlessly blends the time-less aesthetic appeal of a legendary watch family with the world premiere of an innovative material. 18K Sedna gold, a patented alloy blending gold, copper and palladium, has been created to ensure that the unique rose gold lustre of the watch case will be especially long-lasting. The indexes and hands are also made of 18K Sedna gold, as is the clasp on its strap.

A watch imbued with authentic class and dynamic energy. The Admiral’s Cup from Corum requires no introduction, having become a reference in its field with its signature 12-sided bezel. For over 50 years, this iconic model has been consistently delighting nautical enthusiasts with a penchant for fine mechanisms. Loyal to the tradition of excel-lence and originality characterizing this collection, Corum presents the Admiral’s Cup Seafender 47 Tourbillon GMT which, while preserving the inherent sporting spirit of this line built for ex-tremes, is making a noteworthy entrance into the world of the most accomplished horological complications.

eberhard & Co. Chrono 4 Geant Full Injection limitedThe Chrono 4 Géant collection is being en-hanced with a new super-cool total black edition: Chrono 4 Géant Full Injection. The timepiece that perfectly combines technique and aesthetical elegance is produced in a limited series of 500 pieces. The complexity of the construction process, which makes this chronograph even more pre-cious, allows in fact for only a limited produc-

tion. The 46 mm case of Chrono 4 Géant Full Injection is particularly remarkable for the use of a special treatment consisting in an advanced low temperature carbon diffusion. This allows the carbon to penetrate the steel surface for 30 μm (micrometers), thus producing a structural hardening. With the steel’s hardness increase, the watch-case wear-resistance and fatigue-limit are improved.

The Swiss Maison Eberhard & Co., who is celebrating this year its 125th anniversary, is proud to present the latest evolution of Chrono 4.With a 40 cm diameter aluminium case and an electronic movement, the new Chrono 4 Wall Clock represents a journey in Eber-hard & Co. time. Four counters in line and five time zones with five independ-ent movements, to see the time of world’s major capitals at a glance: London, New York, Moscow and Tokyo. Also available in other time zones “combinations”, the wall clock is proposed with a white dial featur-ing raised indexes; the hour, minute and second hands in the centre advance constantly and the adjustment of the movement is regulated independently.

Excalibur Skeleton Double Flying Tourbillon by Roger DubuisAn atmosphere of chivalry, in which duels are synonymous with courage, and where a certain nobility of combat ex-ists, inspired by a bygone age: welcome to the world of the Warrior! A world that brings to mind the symbolism of the Round Table, of the quest for the Holy Grail, the fight of good against evil and the defence of the realm. Here, as a characteristic of the era, men have the power to choose their destiny. It is from this world of choreographed mastery and power that Roger Dubuis reveals the Excalibur Collection. Just like the orders of chivalry, the world of the Warrior is symbolised by the coat of arms. With its perfect gestures, sharpened swords and dazzling armour,

the image of the world of the Warrior recalls a universe of nobility, strength, splendour and discipline. Like the watch-es from the Excalibur Collection, the knight carries inside him the aestheti-cism of combat, the beauty of the brave soldier, and the precision of the quest for excellence. If the valiant wish their arms to win glory and victory, they must never lose sight of what makes them so daring and unflinching: their courage. The world of the Warrior gives great importance to the value of courage. Roger Dubuis is the only watch manu-facturer to produce 100% of its move-ments in accordance with the criteria of the “Poinçon de Genève”.

49Featuring 360° visibility, as if suspended weightless at the center of the case by a sapphire mainplate and bridges, Manufacture Corum Caliber CO100 is the true star of the new Golden Bridge Tourbillon Pano-ramique. This finely open worked translucent move-ment is equipped with a cantilevered or “flying” tourbillon: freed from an upper bridge, it appears to be levitating above the movement. The story goes that the farmer-watchmakers, who annually left their fields for the workbench when winter came, drew inspiration from the delicate perfection of snowflakes in creating toothed wheels and gears. With the Golden Bridge Tourbillon Pano-ramique, reality has never so closely mirrored leg-end. The delicately open worked parts of the new baguette-type movement from the Manufacture look as if they are governed exclusively by a will to put on a spectacular show. Floating in a revisited tonneau-shaped case and enhanced by a flying tour-billon that further accentuates the weightless effect, this hand wound Caliber CO100 only fully reveals its secrets upon close inspection: the mainplate and bridges are in sapphire, forming a transparent hand-polished framework providing 360° vision, like a panoramic snow-covered landscape.Water-resistant to 30 meters, the new Golden Bridge Tourbillon Panoramique is interpreted in three variations naturally issued in limited editions: ten with an 18K red gold case; five with a baguette-set 18K red gold case; and five with an 18K red gold case set with round diamonds. Each version is delivered with two hand-sewn crocodile leather straps – one black, the other brown – secured by an 18K red gold triple folding clasp engraved with the Corum logo.
