ARAB TIMES, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2015 2 LOCAL Kuwait pledges over $6 mn to specialized UN agencies Donations to refugees in Irbil extolled NEW YORK, Nov 10, (KUNA): The State of Kuwait on Monday announced a total of $6,419,000 in voluntary contributions to specialized agencies and funds of the United Nations for 2016. The contributions stem from the country’s sense of responsi- bility for realizing the post- 2015 Development Agenda, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the UN Mansour Al-Otaibi said in a speech to the UN conference on donations for developmental activities. The post-2015 Development Agenda requires enhancement of the funding mechanisms and capi- talizing on the role of innovative private mechanisms, he stated. Kuwait’s new contributions are: $two million for the UNRWA, $one million for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), $for the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), $570,000 for the UN Development Program (UNDP), $500,000 for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), $500,000 for the UN-Habitat, $200,000 for the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), $200,000 for the UN Environment Program (UNEP), $50,000 for the UN Women organ- ization, $20,000 for the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), $10,000 for the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture (UNVFT), $10,000 for the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), and $5,000 for the UN International Drug Control Program (UNDCP). In addition, the State of Kuwait offers annual contributions to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) amounting to $2 million and $250,000 for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, KUNA photo Kuwait’s permanent representative to UN Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi gives speech in front of UN conference to announce donations for developmental activities. Ambassador Al-Otaibi noted. He affirmed Kuwait’s commit- ment to continue contributing to the UN-led humanitarian and developmental activities, and responding to the emergencies around the globe. In response to the appeal issued by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in last August Kuwait offered $15 million for the agency to help the Palestinian students resume their study, he recalled. Ambassador Al-Otaibi called on international donors to meet their obligations towards the develop- ing countries through setting aside 0.7 percent of their respective GDP for the development aid. Meanwhile, Representative of the High Commissioner of the United Nations for Refugees (UNHCR) in Iraq Bruno Guido praised in Irbil on Tuesday Kuwait’s generous donations for the refugees which helped improve lives of many. Guido said in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that Kuwait’s $20 million donation was allocated for the Commission and was used to provide non-food items to the Kurdistan region, indi- cating that more donations will be given to them. He also appreciated Kuwait’s efforts in hosting the three donor conferences for Syrian refugees, adding that the UN title that was granted to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was well-deserved. Guido pointed out that there is an acute shortage of resources and budget, causing an imbalance in the distribution of aid. Recently, priori- ty was given to the most pressing cases especially with the onset of winter and the increasing rains “that can be a disaster for them.” For his part, Consul of Kuwait to Irbil, Dr. Omar Al-Kandari told (KUNA) that he met yesterday evening (late on Monday) with UNHCR’s top offi- cial in Iraq and the Kurdistan region to discuss the refugees and dis- placed people in and outside the camps and to exchange information to figure out how to direct aid. Al-Kandari added that they had also discussed the best ways to deliver aid properly, especially fol- lowing Kuwait’s recent gracious initiative directed by His Highness the Amir to donate $200 million, noting that it would be provided for displaced people in Iraq under the supervision and coordination with the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS). Winner of the “Oil Gas Woman of the Year” Award, Hosnia Hashim, Vice President of Operations at the Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Co. (KUFPEC), said to KUNA: “It is an honor to receive this prestigious award, and I believe that such recognition rein- forces the message to all women that there is room for them to achieve success in the oil and gas industry.” She added: “The support of my colleagues in the oil and gas community played a valuable role in my career growth, and I now want to pass this on to aspiring women professionals. Female role models are very important, and the “Oil and Gas Woman of the Year” Award demonstrates to the younger generation of women the many excit- ing opportunities that await them in the energy sector.” She praised highly the support Kuwaiti women receive from the government in all sectors including the oil and gas sector.
