THE GERMAN STORY

- Rainwater harvesting (RWH) started in the 80ies as green pioneer technology via self builders

- Development into main stream due to green movements (basic systems with no consideration for aestethics)

- With increasing numbers more resistance from water companies (ecomincally and regarding health aspects)

- Improvement of technology to address water company concerns

- Forming of association and DIN standard development- Water companies still try to get RWH eliminated


THE DUTCH STORY

- Rainwater harvesting (RWH) started mid 90ies- Uptake by large market players and water companies- Large market players destroy market through price fight

and badly developped products giving the technology a bad name

- Water company sets up dual pipe work project

using river water and leads to group of people

falling sick due to installation mistakes- No standard developped or association created - Market recovering slowly


THE AUSTRIAN STORY

- Rainwater harvesting (RWH) started mid 90ies- Uptake due to green development via self build market

although water is almost free- Vienna reluctant to support RWH due to excessive water

supply from the mountains- Flooding the reason for support- All Austrian states support RWH

in one way or the other


THE BELGIUM STORY

- Rainwater harvesting (RWH) started mid 90ies- Very simple RWH (filter, tank and pump and ball valve)- At first no interest from authorities until

numbers grew larger - Market under pressure due to simple

technology not acceptable- Mains water back-up was upgraded- Technology accepted as flood prevention measure led to

mandatory usage in the Dutch speaking part- Today‘s leading market in population to system ratio


THE FRENCH STORY- Rainwater harvesting (RWH) started end 90ies- No acceptance from authorities especially due to negative lobbying by

water companies (4)- Nevertheless private installations in strive for independance; French

RWH association formed - Governmental change introduced tax relief for individuals for green

technologies- Application to include RWH was accepted in 2008; first technical guide

line for domestic systems

(commercial RHW still not allowed)- Authorities start accepting commercial RWHS- French standard developped 2011


THE ENGLISH STORY- Rainwater harvesting (RWH) started mid 90ies- In the beginning uptake by small part of the construction market

(self builder or green developer)- Government starts supporting technology by integrating it into

own developments and pushing green agenda- Government undertakes MTP- RWH included in CFSH and BREEAM- Traditional building industry opposes uptake- Carbon footprint used to eliminate RWH

(house builder federation) from CFSH - New product developments and system integration to counter

development
